time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday, with karthi gna nasegaram and gavin ramjaun. the headlines this evening. back with a bang. jose mourinho makes an instant impact at spurs. it is not about me, it is about the players and it is about the club. liverpool survive another var scare — but continue their formidable season with another win. and the pressure piles on unai emery — after a poor arsenal display against southampton. also coming up in the programme. british hopes rest with kyle edmund and dan evans, as britain take on spain in the davis cup semi—finals. and england toil in new zealand, they struggle with the ball as the kiwis turn the screw in the first test.
7:33 pm
lots to come on sportsday tonight — we'll be keeping an eye on great britain at the davis cup in madrid, and it's been a really busy day but we start with the premier league, and jose mourinho‘s first game in charge of tottenham. just a couple of weeks ago he was sitting in a television studio watching liverpool beat manchester city, today he was in the dugout at the london stadium watching his new side beat west ham, joe wilson reports. mourinho is world—famous, and much love that spurs, so what is he got?
7:34 pm
give it 35 minutes. roberto, west ham's goalkeeper was just a witness. just what tottenham needed, and mourinho had it. tottenham battling for the ball, tearing forwards, mourinho picked lucas for this game and there he was. energy, teamwork, when harry kane headed in the third, that was the game. but spurs tired and conceded two late goals as west ham revived themselves, too late to change the fate of the match but enough to show the spurs manager his challengers. so would he smile? just about. remember, he is humble. challengers. so would he smile? just about. remember, he is humblem challengers. so would he smile? just about. remember, he is humble. it is not about me, it is about the players and the club. very important, too long without a victory. i will hate if somebody

says that mourinho made an impact, i did not make an impact, ijust helped them a little bit to win this match. get the people mourinho really needs to win over or his players so from what we saw, so far so players so from what we saw, so far so good. mourinho off to the best possible start at spurs and there's been drama across all the other games in the premier league today. rhia chohan has reaction from that tottenham game, and the rest of the matches for us. rhia. well, we started the day with these headlines. jose mourinho's reported bid to "fire up dele alli" and we saw the impact that the new spurs boss could potentially have on players like dele, who really stepped up in that number ten role — helping set up the first two goals. and interestingly, he's the same age that frank lampard was when mourinho arrived at chelsea... and we saw how he flourished.
7:36 pm
liverpool maintained their eight—point lead at the top of the premier league with a victory over crystal palace. but it wasn't without some var controversy. palace defenderjames tomkins had a goal ruled out in the first half afterjordan ayew was adjudged to have fouled deyan lovren. sadio mane put liverpool in the lead after the break, with this tenth goal of the season. and it looked as if wilfred zaha had rescued a point for palace when he equalised, but roberto firminho clinched a late winner. liverpool's victory means they've now gone 30 games unbeaten in the premier league. so, the pressure remains on manchester city, who played chelsea at the etihad tonight.

will try to continue our work and we have to find a solution together and i think we have to stay strong. we know that we have to carry on and yeah, that's it. and we can add marco silva to the list of managers under scrutiny as everton lost to norwich city. norwich moved off the bottom of the premier league and ended a run of seven games without a win at goodison park. the 2—0 defeat sees everton drop to 15th place. marco silva has lost all four of his premier league home games against sides starting the day bottom of the table elsewhere in the premier league today. jamie vardy‘s scoring run continued as leicester got their fifth consecutive premier league win away at brighton — they stay in second for the time being. wolves moved ahead of arsenal into fifth with a 2—1 win over bournemouth. and burnley are just behind wolves now in sixth thanks to a 3—0 win

real madrid can go level with them later, when they take on real sociedad. and don't forget there's live football on the bbc tonight. we've got the final of the copa libatadores on bbc two. brazilian side flamengo face holders river plate from argentina. it's effectively the champions league final for south america, on the bbc sport website, and app — we have a selection of the best goals scored by both in this year's tournament. it's been complicated build up to the final — as adam wild reports. reaching the final can patients, just ask the brazilian side in 1981 it was their last victory. 10,000 strong party making the team wait just a little longer. those opponents, not quite such scenes, this is them leaving buenos ares the reigning champions in the fence they did turn out had seen it all before.

but as both sides remarkable journey nears its end, the final destination has not always been quite so clear. for the second year in a row, the final has travelled. last years clashes between fans of river plate and juniors meant the second leg of the final was played in madrid. this year, political unrest in chile has forced the final itself to make the journey to peru. but now here it is, south america's biggest club game breaking away from tradition and this year, a single one—off match will decide the destination of the trophy. personally, i prefera single final. you will make it is fairer, whoever is the best strategy it is more exciting if it becomes a big event, fans enjoy the moment more. looking for the first victory in the generation with the plate far

the test became this, it could've been different, they made just 31 when this happened. yes, look again. that was ben stokes dropping the catch. sadly, it seemed even more significant as the day wore on. because even though they had success, henry nichols for a1, that represented 50% of the wickets england took all day. watling settled down into a rhythm a patient scoring which england tried in vain to disrupt and with him, the big man. the grand home, the partnership amassed over 100 runs. there was not a tactic england employed that brought them any joy. it took some scintillating fielding to get rid of this catch from a man playing in his first match. don's catch deserves a second look, he will have runs to make an england's second inning. because his performance took them into the
