sport now on afternoon live, with ben croucher. we've talked about a number of incidents of racism in football, and today we're having to talk about the issue in cricket? there's been numerous incidents in football in the last few months but now we're sadly talking about racism in cricket. england bowler joffra archer says he was subjected to abuse as he walked off against new zealand in the first test match in mount manganui. the man in question has not been identified yet but it's an unsavoury end to what was already a tough few days for england. archer had batted for around an hour in trying to today at 5, a lorry driver accused over the deaths save a draw for england. of 39 migrants in essex, in a post on social has admitted conspiring to assist illegal immigration. after the close, he said... the bodies were found in a lorry container in essex last month, maurice robinson is accused of being part of a bigger new zealand cricket plot to bring people have issued a response, and they said they'll be

for the longest as he made 35 but he, ollie pope and jos buttler all departed soon after each other leaving the tail with too much to do. it's another disappointing performance on the road for england, who must win the second test in hamilton later in the week to level the series. we saw signs and if this game that they are playing with far more discipline than be sought previously, both with the bat and a ball. if you look at the transition that we had when we went from that one way disaster in the world cup in 2015, it takes time to commit to these plants, and i think it is unrealistic for people to expect england to come out and just be able to play in that manner and be used to play in that manner and be used to playing in that matter from the first test match. i think it is a question of giving them time to bed in the mentality of what they want to do. i think they were very good signs at times in this test match, but they have come up against a new zealand team who are pretty settled.

they have had a wave and a matter in which they play their cricket for quite a while now, and executed that really well in this test match. uk athletics have today confirmed that zara hyde peters will not become their new chief executive. she was due to take up the position next week but with safeguarding allegations made against her husband last week, the governing body is no longer proceeding with the appointment. elsewhere in athletics, british 400 metres runner anyika onuora has retired from athletics aged 35. she won a bronze in the 4x400metres at the rio olympics. she also won a bronze in the same event a year earlier at the world championships. great britain hockey player sam ward says he is not one to give up easily after losing the sight in his left eye. he's one of great britain and england's most profilic players in recent years. he was struck in the face by the ball during an olympic qualifying play—off win against malaysia earlier this month. he sustained a crushed retina and facial fractures.

he said, "it is a tough pill to swallow but i will do everything can to make myself available for selection for tokyo olympics." all day across various bbc outlets, we're revealing the contenders for the 2019 sports personality of the years. we already know about raheem sterling, ben stokes and dina asher smith. in the last hour, wales rugby union captain alun wyn jones has been revealed as the fourth nominee after guiding his country to the six nations grand slam and world cup semi final. two more nominees to be announced. one in the one show at seven. bad news, simon, is that another is going to be revealed on bbc radio 2 at 4:15. no competition for you in my eyes though. asi as i tried? always. yeah, ok. talk to you someday, if not later. well, we're now half way through the election campaign —

and almost all the manifestos have been published. my colleague christian fraser has been taking a look at three of them to see how they compare. so, just over two weeks, then, to election day. we almost have a full complement of manifestos, but let me remind you that on the bbc website, under the heading election 2019, you'll find this policy guide. you can select whichever nation you're in, whichever party you want to look at, and all the policies are there. we're going to look at the policies of three parties. we don't have time to go through them all, but we'll start with the conservatives. so, if they win a majority on december the 12th, they pledge to bring back the withdrawal agreement bill before christmas. so, ultimately, the uk would be leaving the eu by january 2020. now, under the terms of the withdrawal agreement, there is a plan for an extension until december 2020. the conservatives say there will be no further extensions past that date. although you'd struggle to find anyone in brussels who think a trade
3:06 pm
agreement can be done in such a short space of time. with regards to health, there is a pledge of £20.5 billion extra over the term of the parliament until 2024, and a pledge to bring 50,000 more nurses into the service, although 18,500 of those are being encouraged to remain in the nhs, or to be brought back. there is also, and this is the important one, a triple lock on taxes. no rise on income tax or on national insurance or on vat. and there is the australian—style points based system which would treat the eu and non—eu immigrants at the same. let's have a look at labour. so, there is this transformational fund. £400 million extra for schools, hospital, housing, energy and transport. there is a pledge to put £75 billion into new council homes — 100,000 a year by 2024, which is... it's quite an ambitious plan. in fact, if i told you that not since 1977 has the state built as many homes as that in one year.
3:07 pm
free full—fibre broadband for every home and business and in the uk, and of course there is a policy on the referendum — a second vote on brexit. and we heard from jeremy corbyn on friday that in that referendum he'd be remaining neutral. the liberal democrats would stop brexit, they would cancel it, revoke article 50 if they win a majority without a second vote. and the money from that would be ploughed back into public services. they call it a brexit bonus, if you will, of £50 billion. they are also planning to put an extra pence on income tax, which would be ring fenced for the nhs and social care, which would bring in 7.8 billion a year. and there's 20 billion a year for every year up to 2024 to tackle climate change. as i say, the manifestos of the other parties are there for the brexit party, the greens and plaid. wer‘e still waiting for a manifesto from the snp.
3:08 pm
but let's have a quick look before we go at the poll tracker. so, i'm putting a big bucket of salt over this. there is a big margin of error, of course, in such volatile times. but you can see that the conservatives, according to this, at the moment, are 12 points ahead of labour. as they go up, the brexit party, similarly, is going down. the same is true for labour and the liberal democrats. as the labour party put on support, inversely, the liberal democrat support is falling. just to remind you, there it is again, election 2019... have a look at the policy guide. after massive gains by pro—democracy candidates in local elections in hong kong, the territory's leader carrie lam has said she will listen, and reflect seriously on the message sent by voters. pro—democracy councillors now control 17 out of 18 district councils. it's being seen as stinging

enquiry into the violence of the past five months. the hong kong government must have been hoping that after this election perhaps the protests might die down. but the stunning opposition victory seems to have given the movement and its supporters new momentum. newly elected councillors visited the university campus, where a handful of activists are still holed up after last week's battles with the police — symbolically linking the protests with their election win. china now faces an acute dilemma. what does it do about a defiant hong kong? for the moment, it can only trot out a familiar official script. translation: no matter what happens in hong kong, it is chinese territory, and special administrative region of china. any attempt to destabilise hong kong — or even to damage its prosperity and stability — will never succeed.
3:11 pm
china is blaming foreign interference for this political setback. many hong kongers would say it's been the strategy of relying on an increasingly unpopular police force to contain popular anger which has prolonged the crisis. now they must wait to see whether china is willing to change course. in a moment, the latest business news. first a look at the headlines on afternoon live. lorry driver maurice robinson appears in court over the deaths of 39 vietnamese migrants — he admits to plotting to assist illegal immigration. two cinema chains pulls the gang—themed film blue story after a brawl at a complex in birmingham at the weekend. vue cinemas claims the decision followed 25 significant incidents. celebrations for pro—democracy supporters after winning overwhelmingly in hong kong's local elections.

here's your business headlines on afternoon live: as we've been hearing, uber has been stripped of its licence to operate in london. it has 21 days to appeal but will continue to operate during this period. about 45,000 drivers work for uber in london, and if its licence is ultimately rejected all of them could lose theirjobs. luis vuitton is set to buy tiffany for £12.5 billion. lvmh is the world's largest luxury goods company and with this purchase of the us based jeweller it will have an even bigger share of the sector. lvmh's billionaire owner bernard arnault said that tiffany had an "unparalleled heritage" and fitted with its other brands, louis vuitton and bulgari. tsb is set to close 82 branches next year, reducing their network from 540 to 454. as a result, around 300 to 400 jobs could be lost. this is all part of a plan by the new chief executive, debbie crosbie, as it tries to restore its reputation following last year's huge it failure which hit

community is because my community to experience last year with their it. the ticket executive was forced to resign a the ticket executive was forced to resigna —— the ticket executive was forced to resign a —— the chief executive. the new chief executive has vowed to make things better and save £100 million by 2022. but it is certainly a challenging time for her, and we have got someone who can tell us all about that. it is francis coppola, an independent business analyst. this is quite a myth, to cut so many branches, isn't it? it is, it is quite dramatic. a lot of their branch network. that said, it is quite a big branch network, and are properly did need to just as pretty. she has got to get costs down. it is such a difficult environment for banks, with low interest rates continue forever, it is very hard for them to make any money. tsb hasn't been doing very well. since

the it mother, it has got to get it back up somehow. i those it problems haven't gone away. only last week we had another programme. surely they should be looking more closely at their it systems rather than trying to cut branches at this moment in time? she is talking about investing 120 million and it, to upgrade your digital offering, giving it much more to it much more to a platform basis. this is consistent with what other banks are doing, sol basis. this is consistent with what other banks are doing, so i would say what she is doing is pretty much what other banks are doing, cutting the branch network, moving everything online onto digital platforms and so forth. that is fine as farasa platforms and so forth. that is fine as far as a ghost, but it is keeping up as far as a ghost, but it is keeping up with the heart, not creating anything distinctive, and the problem with esb as you have got a reputational problem with their it. they have got to build resilience and trust with their it. it seems strange that a lot of the challenger banks are based on apps and using softwa re banks are based on apps and using software to get you to bank, and for

tsb to go so heavily into that and spend a lot of money on that after they had such a huge meltdown seems like a strange move. i don't think they have got a great deal of choice. they have got to keep up, because that is a direction banking is going on. if you don't keep up, they have to go on the opposite direction, like metal bankers, and thatis direction, like metal bankers, and that is not going terribly well either. it is hard to see what the future is. it isjust a very difficult time for banks, really. and your opinion, on the high street, the bank, is that model dead? is it over? i don't think the high street bank is going to disappear. i think there will always bea disappear. i think there will always be a need for a high street presence for some things, but i do think that we are going to see far fewer high street branches, and they are going to be concentrated in a bigger population sectors. i think the rural branch probably is dead. thank you very much indeed.

a quick look at the markets, and everything is looking positive. and thatis everything is looking positive. and that is all down to positive news from the us and china trade talks. an estimated one—in—five adults in the uk has a tattoo — most on parts of the body that can be covered up easily. but one salon is calling on clients to think carefully before getting a tattoo on theirface, neck or hands, as it could hamper their job prospects. john maguire has been finding out more. level tattoo studio in bristol offers an eclectic range of designs, but it has a strict policy on facial tattoos. young clients are asked for id, and even if they are 18, the staff here draw a line. do you want it so obvious you want people to see, you want to see it every time, even your face and the shoulders or something.

it's like when you go to the mirror and wash yourface in the morning, it's the first thing that you see. so, do you want to see that every single day for the rest of your life? ryan is back in the chair after eight hours of work yesterday as tattoo artist carlo completes his design. it extends onto a hand, but for ryan, the face is a no go. in my line of work, when you meet clients and that, i do think my image means a lot. so, i'm not sure if it intimidates some people or not, i'm not too sure, but most and foremost, i wouldn't have it personally. ijust don't think it would look all right on me more than anything else. so, you sort of draw the line of what's... yeah, i wouldn't. .. obviously visible. yeah, that'll be it now, so... yeah, i wouldn't do neck or face, no. from beckham to bieber, body art is more prevalent and more obvious among trendsetters and influences than ever before. but there's concern within the industry about young fans copying their idols. the british tattoo artists federation wants stricter licensing
