10:45 pm
bringing us tomorrow. with me are torcuil crichton, westminster editor at the daily record, and sam lister, deputy political editor of the daily express. thanks for coming in, lovely to see you. many of tomorrow's front pages are already in. the guardian reports on the release of uncensored documents, which, according tojeremy corbyn, prove that the nhs is on the table in trade talks with the us, despite denials from the conservatives. the paper also features an image of the australian broadcaster clive james, who has died at the age of 80. the times writes that borisjohnson is on course for a comfortable majority in the general election, suggested by the latest poll for the paper by yougov. the poll was based on 100,000 interviews carried out over seven days. by contrast, the telegraph leads on a warning from dominic cummings, boris johnson's most senior adviser, who says "the election is too close to call" — and that the conservatives and labour are much closer than polls indicate.
10:46 pm
the paper also features a picture ofjeremy corbyn, who has decided not to take part in two televison debates. let us start with the guardian. the story we've been running all day on the nhs, which we know is a key question for many voters stop yes, and jeremy corbyn is trying to capitalise on fears on the future of the nhs. but this guardian story also talks about a51 pages of uncensored documents. all these trade talks and how the nhs is up for sale, jeremy corbin says we have evidence now thatjohnson has put the nhs on the table with trade talks with the us. if you look through this dossier, it is actually just a handful of mentions of health issues that bear no relation to any nhs for sale stories. butjeremy corbin has been underfire today
10:47 pm
nhs for sale stories. butjeremy corbin has been under fire today for anti—semitism, and he's distracting from that with this. do you think this worry about the nhs being safe with the conservatives is one that is coming through? not for sale, not for sale, that's what happens at all the jeremy corbyn rallies. here we are, a fortnight out from a humdrum election so far, and this is the moment we all thought would set a light for us. it turned out to be a damp squib, because it doesn't quite prove it, but it puts the ballpark of the nhs and who do you trust with the nhs. labour say they found these papers that show post brexit trade talks with the us would open up the nhs like a can of tuna and allow the us pharma companies to get in there. corbin had a good line, saying that to form have been ripping off the us for years, what makes you think they won't rip off britain after brexit?
10:48 pm
he got off to a good start there, people trust labour with the nhs, but do they trust jeremy corbyn to be prime minister? that brings us onto the times. this poll carried out by you guv that many people in the political world have been waiting for. johnson has a big majority, but we need to be incredible careful with all polls because we know that polls have not got it wrong in the past, but this uses got it wrong in the past, but this uses a very specific prediction mechanism that has worked last time. we've all been burned by the polls, s0 we've all been burned by the polls, so we are we've all been burned by the polls, so we are all slightly unsure when we report on these things. but this one, and 2017, it was the first time they'd used this type of modelling, and it looks at seat by seat projections rather than just doing an overall projection. and actually, i think it was the only poll at that time to predict that we would have a
10:49 pm
hung parliament after the election. so everyone is looking very closely at this, and it predicts a 68 seat majority for boris johnson, which at this, and it predicts a 68 seat majority for borisjohnson, which is way more than anyone has been expecting up to this point. so labour is basically collapsing, two seats higher than 1983, the second worst post result for labour. if this came to fruition, the lib dems will have imploded if this is to be believed. the lib dems are up by that one gain, i believe. you can be as conscious as that one gain, i believe. you can be as coi'iscious as you that one gain, i believe. you can be as conscious as you want about polls, but we get really excited about it. this is the one we've all been waiting for, a massive sample under these people, every seat. and it shows the tories storming ahead, a majority of 68, just... a majority of 68, the it shows the tories storming ahead, a majority of 68, the snp in a3, up
10:50 pm
from 35, but take back a little bit and the lib dems at 13, they may as well not gone to the polls. they're coming up with less than they have i'iow. coming up with less than they have now. the methodology is fantastic, and we have all these cautionary tales about polls, but this is the poll that predicted a hung parliament a week out from the 2017 election. it wasjust parliament a week out from the 2017 election. it was just one parliament a week out from the 2017 election. it wasjust one out. we have to be very careful because it doesn't necessarily add in specifically the local factors, and we know not only here but in the us,... i'll show you the local factor. in scotland it shows the snp going from 35 up to a3. it shows the tories holding onto 11 of their 13 seats, labour... which is much more than expected. the lib demsjust staying at quattro matt, which is as expected. that —— at four.
10:51 pm
midlothian has been counted twice, i don't know if that is a computer error. we have to be incredible careful. there was an incredibly interesting local fact i careful. there was an incredibly interesting localfact i picked up. caroline flint is on course to lose her seat to the tories. caroline flint represents the part of doncaster i grew up in. i never thought i would see that seat go to anybody other than labour in my entire lifetime. so this is really big stuff. it is incredibly leaf lisa: seat. although she has campaigned for the deals that we put through very strongly, she knows how strong the feeling is in doncaster. but it is not cutting through for her, and when i was there recently, people said to me that they thought she was a remainer, they didn't realise she was trying to leave. she struggled to...i was trying to leave. she struggled to... i have relatives who say that
10:52 pm
dennis skinner would lose his seat. we do know that asjohn dennis skinner would lose his seat. we do know that as john curtis dennis skinner would lose his seat. we do know that asjohn curtis said, it will be seat by seat. we should stress this is just one poll, there are many facet if you want more election, her of course, if you want more information on latest opinion poll trends, you can look at our poll tracker on the bbc website, which measures how people say they are going to vote at the next general election. overall, the polls from the last week have shown the same pattern of movement as they have throughout the campaign. in particular, the conservatives have gone up again in the bbc poll tracker, and the brexit party continues to fall. 110w now let us look at the telegraph, because they are leading on dominic cummings warning the election is too close to call. this was a really fascinating piece that dominic cummings, boris johnson's adviser, wrote today. he wrote a poisonous piece that others everyone else who wanted to remain. it is typical
10:53 pm
dominic cummings, they say the tory party only operates between complacency and panic, it only has two settings. knowing this poll will come out tonight, i reckon boris johnson is familiar that dominic cummings has issued a blog which he called the bat signal. it was warning people that regardless of what you hear in the polls, it will be very tight, and you need to persuade your friends and relatives that it must be boris and brexit, or this terrible combination of nicola sturgeon and jeremy corbyn ruining your country. but if you read the entire blog, which we did today, there is some shocking things in their accusing labour and the snp of who cheated in the last at referendum, and that they would cheat and lie, and change it so that foreign citizens could vote in the election, and be funded by people
10:54 pm
like goldman sachs. pretty nasty point in the election, i would say. do you think that is how it will be, this piece? i think the reason dominic cummings has done this is because the last thing the tories wa nted because the last thing the tories wanted was a poll showing a huge lead. it's just their idea wanted was a poll showing a huge lead. it'sjust their idea of wanted was a poll showing a huge lead. it's just their idea of a nightmare, because they do fear that voters will then not turn out. or if they are not sure between the tories and lib dems, going one way or the other secular it is the absolute nightmare scenario for them, a slew of polls predicting a big win. so they're trying to get the message out there that it is quite close. @ who has been registered and all that is incredibly uncertain. we are still two weeks to go, so stuff happens. this is when it gets tight, when we are down that alleyway now.
10:55 pm
let's look now at the telegraph, who have a photograph ofjeremy corbyn. the most unflattering photo of jeremy corbyn i've ever seen. with the health papers that he was focused on today. they're talking about him dodging the television debates after the disastrous interview last night, but it is a bit more, gated than that, isn't it? nobody emerges from an interview with andrew neil unscarred, you know? everyone gets bruised, and jeremy corbyn was on anti—semitism, nicola corbin was onjoining the eu. the telegraph decided that because of that, german corbyn is dodging the next couple of debates. but the real story today is that boris johnson is dodging the grilling with andrew neil. he hasn't confronted that yet, he's runs turkey because it's thanksgiving tomorrow. so the real story of the day is that boris johnson still has not confirmed his
10:56 pm
andrew neil bashing, it is buried in thisjeremy corbyn andrew neil bashing, it is buried in this jeremy corbyn story. both don't wa nt this jeremy corbyn story. both don't want to secularjeremy corbyn will doa want to secularjeremy corbyn will do a channel for climate change tonight. but i think borisjohnson is not doing it, we don't know whether he will do that and your neil debate. you have to think about what the advantage is for him doing it. if he decides not to do it, he will take a hit, people say he is a chicken. 0ne will take a hit, people say he is a chicken. one day a bad headlines, is that worth taking for a terrible interview that can be played over and over again on twitter? i think people in number ten — ncc hq will be making that decision at the moment, which is the worst option for them. you mentioned in number ten it, and it strikes me that dominic cummings is still in number ten. true, he's kind of out of the... 0ut
10:57 pm
ten. true, he's kind of out of the... out of the campaign. but why would borisjohnson... the... out of the campaign. but why would boris johnson... element the... out of the campaign. but why would borisjohnson... element two more weeks. talk is out. we will be backin more weeks. talk is out. we will be back in 30 minutes, hopefully at 11:30pm. and don't forget, you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. it's all there for you, seven days a week, at bbc.co.uk/papers. and if you miss the programme any evening, you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. thank you, torcuil crichton and sam lister. goodbye. good evening. we've seen some really relentless rain today, particularly across southeastern scotland and northeast of england. the outlook is for a drier weather to become more widespread across the uk, but i did
10:58 pm
do makea widespread across the uk, but i did do make a big difference to come is it will feel considerable colder. this low is still willing away at the moment, somewhat weather still into the night for england. but the re m na nts of into the night for england. but the remnants of thursday working its way across the uk. behind it, and northerly wind sets up the drier weather of ice with colder air, as well. 0vernight tonight, you can see the lows of swirling with quite a bit of rain across northern england. through thursday, gradually clearing the skies initially coming across scotland, perhaps into the midlands. the weather front still producing a pretty wet picture for whales in the south of england through the remainder of thursday. temperatures here still in the double figures, but north of that there will be some sunshine. it will feel much colder with a northerly wind, highs of five celsius in aberdeen.
10:59 pm
11:00 pm
this is bbc news. i'm geeta guru—murthy. the headlines at 11:00pm: labour says it has proof that the nhs is at risk in an american trade deal after britain leaves the eu. we've now got evidence that, under borisjohnson, the we've now got evidence that, under boris johnson, the nhs we've now got evidence that, under borisjohnson, the nhs is on the table and will be up for sale. but borisjohnson says the conservative manifesto promises the nhs will not be on the table in post—brexit trade talks. we are absolutely resolved that there will be no sale of the nhs, no privatisation. the nhs is not on the table in any way. the snp launches its election manifesto, saying it is time to put scotland's future in scotland's hands, and calls for a second independence referendum next year.
