match at euro 2020. john opening match at euro 2020. john watson in bucharest, thank you. if you want more on that draw, as well as what is on the bbc sport pages, we have our sport programme coming up we have our sport programme coming up in around five minutes. the annual christmas tree lighting ceremony in bethlehem's manger square has taken place. the tree is outside the church of the nativity — where christians believe jesus was born. the tree lighting coincides with the beginning of advent and the four week run up to christmas. and staying in bethlehem, a tiny wooden relic, believed by christians to be from jesus s manger, has been returned to the town after more than a thousand years in rome. it was briefly put on display injerusalem yesterday before continuing its journey to the holy land on the orders of pope francis. now it's time for a look at the weather with alina jenkins. temperatures in places have struggled to get above freezing, particularly where the fog has been

slow to clear. the fog will reform this evening and overnight, particularly across east wales, the midlands and northern england. cloud and rain in the south—west will begin to slide south, taking gusty winds with it. a breeze blowing gci’oss winds with it. a breeze blowing across the southern half of the uk, so across the southern half of the uk, so the fog not quite so extensive, the frost not as sharp. elsewhere, clear skies, a few showers clipping northern and eastern scotland, ten two on eastern coast, and in parts of northern ireland. it is a dry and cold night for many, lowest temperatures across northern england, northern ireland and into scotland. tomorrow, high pressure building from the west, low—pressure sliding south. quite a breeze, will continue to feed showers in. for many, a dry and bright day with good spells of sunshine, the fog not lingering quite so long. still a cold day.

hello, this is bbc news with shaun ley. the headlines: tributes are paid to the first victim to be named in the london bridge attack. cambridge graduate jack merritt, was running a prisoner rehabilitiation conference — to which his attacker had been invited. the prime minister says he wants longer sentences for violent offenders, and says the attack is proof serious criminals shouldn't be released from prison early. but the mayor of london sadiq khan says ministers are to blame for reducing sentences for serious offenders. and in other news, millions of commuters will have to pay an average of 2.7 percent more for rail tickets in the new year.
6:33 pm
and england will face croatia in their opening game for the euro 2020, on ilijune. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello, i'm 0lly foster, here's what's coming up on sportsday: england and wales could have had it much tougher, we'll be live at the euro 2020 draw. city slip up at stjames as newcastle score a late equaliser. that sees liverpool move 11 points clear in the premier league. and england's cricketers are up against it in new zealand the kiwis are on top in the second test. also coming up in the programme.
6:34 pm
wayne's wales have a winning start against the barbarians in cardiff. and we hear the remarkable story of the olympic rowing champion fighting back after being left paralysed following a stroke. hello there, we'll have a full round up from today's premier league matches in a moment but over the last hour or so we've had the draw for next summers‘ european championship. euro 2020. wales and england were in there and they should be fairly pleased with the teams they have been drawn against, and we have a classic group of death, for more details let's head live to bucharest and speak to john watson who is there for usjohn, let's start with england,
6:35 pm
who were one of the top seeds, but they have a very familiar opponent in groud d. when you consider how they fared 3 years ago in france at the last a really tough opening match. the tough as they will probably face. it is worth pointing out that then, just five days later, they could face scotland. as know, scotland still stand a chance of qualifying through the player. 0ne still stand a chance of qualifying through the player. one of the nation still to qualify. the final group game against the czech republic. the advantage for england with one of the host cities being london, they could play all their
6:36 pm
home matches at wembley. a huge amount of support, you can imagine, which could serve england well in their bid to go into the latter stages of next summer's tournament. this year from the england stages of next summer's tournament. this yearfrom the england manager who was speaking shortly after the draw was made and he touched upon that difficult opening match. the toughest group game they will face in their opener against croatia. we know the quality of their midfield players. and they can leave great players on the bench that tells story. but as a top—level fixture and, yeah, funnily enough i had a picture before the draw. he wanted to be in london said that's investing from their point of view. home advantage, john, won't be for england. when consider how they said three years ago in france, losing to iceland last year, they seem to be in a much better place under gareth southgate and he was talking about how they go into this. especially how they did at the last world cup. as world beaters they
6:37 pm
should not have to fear anybody. yes. absolutely. they are seemingly a team transformed, arendt bay, following that embarrassment of going out of the last european championships when they lost to lowly iceland at the time. under gareth southgate he is really reconnected this england team with the england fans the england support and nobody expected that brilliant run to the semifinals at the last world cup. really underpinned by the way that he galvanised the team, brought the individuals within the tea m brought the individuals within the team together and really connected with the funds. and in light of that and a very impressive qualifying campaign, winning seven out of their eight matches in euro qualification, they will be a threat, danger for anyone for topping about the attacking threat that england have going forward. still some questions defensively. a long—time partner alongside harry maguire and defence
6:38 pm
is something that gareth southgate will want to find and lockdown before they go into the european championships but they are a team, it is there to say, 0llie, to be feared. wales, the semifinalists. that fantastic run they had in the last euros, one of the last nations out the top looks fairly tough, tougher than england's group, but it could been a lot worse. what did they think about their grip? yes, again. they will be fairly pleased. we knew that they were only going to go into group a or b and you spoke earlier about how a lot of it was predetermined with the host cities, obviously being linked to groups already put up a nearby some of the nations to play and we knew that wales were either going to go into groupa that wales were either going to go into group a or b. the only drawback of being drawn into group a which is where they have been is the logistical and tribal issue that they will face because we know that wales are going to have to play two group matches away from home in
6:39 pm
azerbaijan so they will open against switzerland on the 13th ofjune and then they will face turkey on the 17th. also in baku. theirfinal group game will be against italy in rome. italy, you have to say, with one of the host nations, they will be playing their matches at home in them so they will be favourites, potentially, to top the group if, then, wales finished as runners—up in groupa then, wales finished as runners—up in group a they would face the runners up of group e which could be anyone from russia, denmark, belgium or finland. so potentially you would say a favourable draw if wales can finish runners—up in their group and negotiate their way into the last 16 put up let's hear what ryan giggs had to say about that drawer. and they stage their old games. switzerland are a good team. i watch their progress. they were in the republic of ireland and denmark, a talented team. and, yeah, tacky and a group with france as well the dyes them so to come out of that, they
6:40 pm
have done well and of course, italy, fantastic qualifying, winning every game so, yeah, that'll be a tough game, obviously. 20 nations know which pot they're going to be in. four teams in the play—offs will in march, john. we love a group of death and this is an absolute classic. germany, france, the welsh champions, portugal, the reigning european champions, all in the same group. —— the world champions. i know. i think that is why england under gareth southgate will feel that they have been handed a favourable draw because we knew that france were lurking in part two. they were not one of the top seeds in pot one. we knew they could have been drawn potentially in england's group and portugal, after a stuttering qualification, they were loitering in pot three. so having avoided those big nations i think england will certainly be pleased but
6:41 pm
certainly germany won't be, will they? what a group this is that of germany, portugal, as you say, and france. astonishing, really. worth pointing out, though, that four of the third best placed teams will still go through to the last 16. there is a very real possibility that we could still see portugal, germany and france progressed from their group but some fascinating matches already in that so—called group of death. and i think england will be mightily relieved that they have avoided some of those big teams who are in that group, 0llie. roll on next summer. john watson, many thanks indeed. life in bucharest and the euro 2020 drawl. let's bring you right up to date with todays premier league matches liverpool have stretched their lead to 11 points at the top after they won and manchester city slipped up at newcastle. the champions led twice at stjames park but it finished 2—2. jo currie reports. when you are the defending champions

but nine points behind the premier league leaders every game becomes a must win. manchester city arriving at newcastle looking to make a or liverpool. it all started so well. a sneaky backheel and city were off the mark. apparently did not last long. just three minutes later the defender took advantage of space on the edge of the area to ensure newcastle went in to the break all square. after the restart, and the chilly conditions, the game needed warming up and the firepower was brought. a huge goal and a huge moment for manchester city. newcastle were not finished. a clever free kick and an unmarked shelby commented in a special finish to once again bring his side level as they kept their sights on finishing the game with a point that have a great response stuttering season but varsity another missed opportunity. season but varsity another missed opportunity. that city result at lunchtime must have given liverpool a boost, adam wild is here with the rest of the premier league results ,
6:43 pm
adam, liverpool did take advantage, but it wasn't straightforward. they took the opportunity but only just. it was not straightforward. it certainly wasn't. having seen manchester city get a point at lunchtime against newcastle they will be licking their lips at the prospect of extending their lead at the top of the premier league to ii points. they are up against brighton who have not won at anfield since 1983. and that fun continues but only just. liverpool 1983. and that fun continues but onlyjust. liverpool with a 2—1 victory. liverpool starting very confidently. batman bare, terrific towering header to put them in front for cups a minute or two later he went and did it again. another had us 02— zero. pretty comfortable until the second half. first, a straight red card for handling outside his box. a free kick. side

footing the ball and whilst liverpool were still rearranging themselves. very quick thinking led toa themselves. very quick thinking led to a nervy last few minutes for liverpool but they hung on to take all three points. lots of celebrations, as you would expect. lots of leap around anfield on what has been an emotional week the fans and everyone associated with the club. they have 11 points clear at the table. let's hearfrom club. they have 11 points clear at the table. let's hear from juergen klopp who was full of praise for the substitute keeper despite that free kick. he is the man of the match for me because coming in in a game like this and, yeah, making two saves in the one was tricky and even the goalie kicks of course a difficult and everyone who ever did that with com pletely and everyone who ever did that with completely cold feet, it is just not possible. he should have done that probably definitely but we were not prepared for that situation. so i am com pletely prepared for that situation. so i am completely happy. the same can be said forjose mourinho and tottenham. they were 3-0 mourinho and tottenham. they were
6:45 pm
3—0 up against bournemouth only to be back 3—2. it finished, the perfect start forjose mourinho continued. some terrific goals in that game. worth watching match of the day this evening. the first couple from delhi, a player rejuvenated, coming from long balls over the top and some excellent finishing. another very well taken goal. harry wilson, the liverpool striker came on and pulled it to fort bournemouth. a lovely free kick but it was not enough. spurs with back—to—back league wins this season. a hugely entertaining game. moreno, it seems, has got them playing especially. to play in a position where it feels happier and he feels very co mforta ble. happier and he feels very comfortable. to give him some principle, collective principles of game, very adapted to his qualities at the same time to give him also
6:46 pm
some space for his creativity, that he always has. and that's it. i think it is the manager since i have arrived in three phenomenal matches. 0ne arrived in three phenomenal matches. one of arrived in three phenomenal matches. 0ne ofjose mourinho's former clubs chelsea were in action as well this afternoon but it was not such a good afternoon but it was not such a good afternoon for one of his former protege is frank lampard. west ham had not won at chelsea for 17 years but as you can see that run is over. they beat chelsea by a single goal at the bridge. aaron cresswell with the only goal of the game, a very well one. some really emotional scenes at the final whistle. the west ham players going over to the keeper. here it is that he made his premier league debut at the age of 33. the son of west ham legend and a very proud moment for him. struggling to fight back the tears. i real day to remember. he was what he has been saying in the press conference. he said, my

dad not so much. i think they were both in tears. my dad play for the clu b both in tears. my dad play for the club for 21 years and to see me make my debut keep a clear sheet to get a win for the boys, it is so pleasing. it was remarkable day for him. there's hear from the it was remarkable day for him. there's hearfrom the manager. he never played before in the premier league but i think that he did very well. the personality to play and i think a complete team and our defenders helped him not to keep that. eight earth model where crystal palace beat burnley 2— nil. it was pallas‘s first trip outside of london since august. it was in fact, by some quirk of the schedules, palaces first trip outside of london since august. but, the northern chill didn't seem to put them off. goals from wilfried zaha,

6:52 pm
i don't know if i found that extra as such but i mean, the car was a much better position i would say in this qualifying position if you look at q3 in particularly. nice for them, good delivery so quite close to the bull's—eye, kind of thing. and then the first q3 lap was also under next one a little bit better so under next one a little bit better so that is kind of the benchmark. that is what you want to make sure you do every single qualifying session and it is not easy to get that. session and it is not easy to get that. there was great entertainment at the principality stadium in cardiff as wayne pivac‘s first game in charge of wales saw them beat the barbarians 43 —33. the baba's were being coached by the former wales boss warren gatland. austin halewood reports. a chance to look to the future and say goodbye to old friends. the new wales coach with the first chance to see us ideas and practice but some aspects don't need changing. josh adams scored seven tries in straightaway picked up where he left
