the salvation army in clapton was given just a few days' notice that melania trump was coming. the children of baden powell primary school nearby were only told this morning who they were about to meet. a church hall in east london is perhaps an unusual setting for a visit from an american first lady. but this is safe territory for melania trump. a christian organisation and a global charity, the salvation army was seen as a good fit for today's event. melania made christmas decorations and chatted to the kids and their teachers. the talk was of christmas in america, the journey to london and the trump family — along with the odd revelation. she's never had a mince pie, an english mince pie. she's never had a mince pie? i was like, "you need to try it, then!" did she try one? she hasn't tried it yet but she's going to try it tonight. if you think about it, you're not really going to get

a chance to see her again, so you have to kind of keep remembering. the visit of the first lady may have been a little unexpected for the salvation army, but will be a boost for their christmas present appeal. the salvation army has a lot of work in america, and i think mrs trump has seen our work there. but also the salvation army's home is the uk, and she really wanted to come and meet children. the visit ended, of course, with a year five class photo — today with a special extra guest squeezed in — as this american first lady got a taste of christmas in the uk. daniela relph, bbc news, clapton, in east london. that's it. newsnight is getting under way on bbc two, on bbc one it is time for the news where you are.

tributes to bob willis — the former england captain and fast bowler — who has died. he was 70. his greatest moment probably came in the third test of the 1981 ashes at headingley. botham's ashes — but it was willis' eight wickets that helped england win that game. he played 90 tests for his country — captaining them on 18 occasions, taking 325 wickets at on average ofjust over 25 — and that puts him fourth on the all time leading test wickets takers for england behind james anderson, stuart broad and sir ian botham. david gower replaced willis as captain, and told us how his stamina and skill made him one of the best fast bowlers in the business. anyone who has ever bowled fast will tell you that it comes with a lot of pain. it might be a simple turnover problem, it can be knees, hips, backs. all the great fast bowlers at some stage or other have taken time

off because of injury, and it's all a question of character and determination as to how you come back from it. yes, and bob's frame, if you looked at bob in the flesh, he was not a man who necessarily sort of screamed out at you i am going to be one of the quickest bowlers in the world. on his day, he certainly was, and he had passion to go with it, so you had everything, all the right ingredients, apart from really the natural body. i can look at one or two other more natural athletes, without being kind to dear old bob, and they would be more suited to the job, but he came m, more suited to the job, but he came in, he steamed in, whether it was headingley in 81. he made his debut backin headingley in 81. he made his debut back in 1970 so he had a good decade before that, or even earlier may be. when he made his debut in australia, this tall gangly lad strode out there, and people looked at him, thinking, are you serious? but the credit that is due to the man is that over the next decade and more he made sure people realised he could bowl a quick and do it very well indeed. he had standards that

we re well indeed. he had standards that were set 30 or a0 years ago. now some of the things in the game don't change, some of the basic techniques don't change, there is a lot of new stuff we have all watched evolve over the last ten or 20 years, ipl, t20, all these things have come in. he would accept all that, but he would expect high standards. he didn't like people who didn't put the effort in. for someone like him, who had to work really seriously ha rd to who had to work really seriously hard to get something out of the game, if ever he saw anyone who was slacking, taking life easy, not putting 100% income he would be down on him like a tonne of bricks. so he set high standards. again, little bits of clips we will no doubt see over the next 2a hours will show him in vibrant form. he pulled no punches. that was very much his shtick on tv for sky and they loved him for it, because he gave them full on strong, vibrant opinions and thatis full on strong, vibrant opinions and that is what that part of the game was about.
