hello, and welcome to sportsday. we start with russia, and a significant ban that's been handed to them by the world anti—doping agency. they're barred from all major sporting events for the next four years, so there will be no russian flag or anthem at next year's olympic games in tokyo. it'll be the same at the winter olympics in beijing in 2022, and also at the world cup in qatar later that same year. our reporter alex capstick has been in lausanne where wada's executive committee made their decision today. leading members of while the‘s executive committee have explained to us in this hotel in central notts and the reason they came to this decision to ban russia for four yea rs decision to ban russia for four years is because russia are repeat offenders. they have found to be
6:32 pm
covering our positive drug tests. as to the punishment, they think they have the balance right, that ape—like ban and the world calls for ape—like ban and the world calls for a total ban on athletes and officials, that would have been unfairon the officials, that would have been unfair on the competitors who were untainted by the doping conspiracy. so they have banned the russian flag, russian anthem, leading sports official, leading government officials from next year's olympics, and other big sporting events. what happens next is down to russia, they have 21 days in which they can lodge an appeal. then it will go to the court of arbitration, which could ta ke court of arbitration, which could take us right up until the tokyo olympics. the final decision will be with them at will go to individual governing bodies, fifa, ioc, to amend those sanctions. there was a long way to go, and this could still get very messy. i think the change of behaviour that is required from whoever it is said russia that has caused all this to happen, i am not
6:33 pm
optimistic at all that that will change. they have had three swings at the bat, struck out three times. the depleted to, deceit, deception that they exhibited is blonde appeal. —— deceit. ithink that they exhibited is blonde appeal. —— deceit. i think it is an embarrassment to the athletes and the world. at this stage, they are fighting for their rights of their clea n fighting for their rights of their clean athletes, as i called them, meanwhile they have destroyed all the detail that could either exonerate them or find the detail that could either exonerate them orfind out the detail that could either exonerate them or find out they are guilty. —— of the data. that is another layer of deception. so russia will be excluded on the biggest international stages for the next four years, including the next world cup in qatar. british athlete tom bosworth says he's glad that russian athletes with a clean record, who aren't implicated, will get the chance to compete.
6:34 pm
for all athletes, it is fantastic. athletes are selfish, they have to look out for their results and competition, but at the same time if i were sitting in their shoes, i would be... it would be difficult, because i am glad there is a blanket ban, buti because i am glad there is a blanket ban, but i am glad there is also a way that some of the athletes can still compete. what is the significance of this being widened out to other sports including football? does it make it more mainstream for people to understand that it mainstream for people to understand thatitis mainstream for people to understand that it is notjust athletics and olympics? yes, absolutely, it would be naive to think it was just one sport. this is a huge problem, because sport has lost its way, it hasn't looked out for athletes for a long time, and there is clearly a lot of corruption within sport. i think that is why russia believe they could get away with it. long, because they didn't deliver or their expectations, their dates or
6:35 pm
information that was required of them, as they are now facing this new ban, at that was a clear across all their sports, not new ban, at that was a clear across all theirsports, notjust athletics. identify think they are being used as a message to other nations and other countries because it is not just nations and other countries because it is notjust russian athletes failing tests. there is piety of other nations all around the world failing tests, and so it is incredibly tough but it is incredibly tough but it is incredibly important that this is happening because it is such a global issue. today message like this do well to stamp out doping in the future? what do you think this says? while people are getting away with it, no, because people are still willing to cut corners, still wa nted still willing to cut corners, still wanted to find an easier route to the top. a lot of nation still believe that sport is a great advertising tool for their nation, if they are winning competitions, thatis if they are winning competitions, that is all that matters. anti—doping is not equal across the globe. uk it doping put a lot of
6:36 pm
money into their testing, and that is just not the same, not equal across the board. that is something personal to me because i get tested very often. we have a lot of education, but you are preaching to the choir. most avars are well aware, and i'm not saying the uk are perfect, there is a handful of athletes i'm sure are cheating, but plenty of nations, far more common practice, they have very little if any anti—doping procedures in place. could athletes do more to raise awareness about anti—doping measures, and perhaps use social media are other forms of communication to make the public more aware of what is happening? that is only ham play, athletes have had enough. they want their governing bodies to protect them. —— thatis governing bodies to protect them. —— that is already in play. my team—mates that is already in play. my tea m — mates co nsta ntly post on that is already in play. my team—mates constantly post on social media where they are getting tested, but that is the point. we are being tested a lot. when i speak to my
6:37 pm
colleagues, from other countries, they say, i have been tested once or twice, it is incredibly frustrating, but they are speaking up as well. i feel like athletes are villa coming together. —— are really coming together. the former england goalkeeper rob green has joined us to talk about west ham against arsenal — 8 o'clock kick off in the premier league tonight. and it's a game, rob, between two sides who are bang out of form. west ham a former club of yours, of course. let's start with arsenal, their worst run since 1977 — what's going on? you are looking at the aftermath of finger leaving, problems there, identity of the club, unai emery couldn't address those issues are now you are left with freddie ljungberg picking up the poison chalice and not starting off in a great vein of form. ursula is a key player who is not performing he does
6:38 pm
not seem interested. a whole host of problems at arsenal, addison is they get a new the better. freddie ljungberg. is this something he can fix quickly? is it down to him the squad? is it down to him the squad7m is it down to him the squad? if you compare him to duncan ferguson, you will not mess with duncan ferguson, you will do exactly as he says. i played with freddie at west ham, he doesn't, he is not the type of character to just straighten out the dressing room, if there are issues within the club and their public carry on going. it is a tough one for him in his first real managerial position that he has got to address these issues. you had a brief spell with him as a player with west ham. has he got what it takes to turn things around? what kind of spirit will he engender? he had a real passion for
6:39 pm
arsenal. he came to west ham from arsenal, he loved the club and spoke about it and his hatred of manchester united, but from that he clearly has a direction that needs to get across to the players, and if he cannot do that then they are just going to float along in the same way. whether he can invoke the passion that duncan ferguson can, i don't know, but he has not got that imposing character in a dressing room. you look at the characters as you mentioned, may be he is not the type —— it is not a typo club that will drag them out of tricky situation. west ham, it looked like they turned the corner, with that victory over chelsea. llost their next game though. they just can't find any form. mark noble was recently looking at changes league football, aiming for the top four. now we're looking at the top four. now we're looking at the bottom for, so it is a real
6:40 pm
fluctuation. they spend a lot of money as well. they also lose key players. the creative forces of some of those players, wanting to leave, they had to. but you are looking at a club that sa the stature of west ham, we need to keep these players and keep them interested, but we need to be coming at the top. it is a tricky situation for the club, you look at the characters in the dressing room, mark noble, declan rice, looking at each other and to give this has to come from them. this is their club and their problem. fa don't drag them out of it, they were looking around and say, iam not it, they were looking around and say, i am not sure these lads can. it isa say, i am not sure these lads can. it is a position for the captain cook and the manager, because when you are short of confidence you just need those two or three guys to spark something, but can they get out spac tonight? if west ham don't win, the end for manuel pellegrini?
6:41 pm
looking at silva at everton, the standard seems to be that if you reach the bottom three, for a club of that stature, maybe not so much newly promoted teams, theirjob properly going to get the sack, and i think this might be one of those games where if it is a loss or a heavy loss, they may start those decisions. let's just look back at the weekend, to talk about leicester — really not short of confidence at all at the moment — they are flying. second in the league right now, after beating aston villa 4—1. that was their eighth premier league win in a row, a club record. jamie vardy‘s been such a big part of their success too. he's also right up there in terms of top scorers in europe this season — he's got 16 — that's more than lionel messi, robert lewandowski, and is just one behind lazio's ciro immobile. rob — why is he so good this year? looking back at this season they won

the premier league a few years ago, they just played and the premier league a few years ago, theyjust played and had a system and just went with that. now it is a different system, more football involved, but they have clearly got away that they love playing and they have got guys who want to be out there and are running around. you look at someone like arsenal and you compare it to lister, a group of players who are so together and playing so well, they love playing for that manager. jonny evans has been incredible, or experienced player, people doubted whether he still had it. he has been amazing. someone like jamie vardy, retired from international football, and someone like jamie vardy, retired from internationalfootball, and the last six months has really come on again. that sort of attitude, chemistry with a dressing room, you cannot buy that. it is great to watch because they play such good football. rodgers? it is just it isjust a it is just a surprise that he has not had a chance at this is no

disrespect, he went to celtic and did so well, but you say, what would arsenal go for someone like him now? to galvanise the club, walk into a dressing room and turn it around and say, look, you are my boys, you're my team, and i want you to play this way and really get them playing some wonderful football. thanks to rob, who's part of the monday night club on 5 live sport tonight. full commentary from the london stadium from seven o'clock tonight. some more news now from the world of football. a 41—year—old man has been released on bail after being questioned by police over reports of racist behaviour during manchester city's defeat to manchester united at the etihad stadium on saturday. a 13—year—old burnley fan is also being investigated by police for making an alleged racist gesture to tottenham's son heung—min on the same day. brighton, meanwhile, say two "visiting supporters" were arrested for homophobic abuse during sunday's premier league game against wolves at amex stadium.

they say the individuals were ejected by stewards and arrested outside the stadium. england will gear up for euro 2020 with a friendly against italy at wembley in march. they had already lined up home games against denmark and romania, with a trip to austria in between. and austria will be wales's first opponents in their build—up to the euros. they'll play at home on march the 27th at a venue yet to be decided. let's turn our attentions to the champions league now — and chelsea have theirfate in their hands, when they take on lille tomorrow night. a win in theirfinal group game will see them through to the knockouts. there are third, but level on points with valencia. lampa rd there are third, but level on points with valencia. lampard knows how big thejob is for with valencia. lampard knows how big the job is for his young team at sta mford the job is for his young team at stamford bridge. i think it would be

a good achievement. i know there is expectations we should get through a group, but it was a tough group, slightly young field to our team, the fact we lost the first game. a few difficulties we have had and we have dealt with a well to get ourselves in this position. still work to be done. we have to go out to win the game. liverpool play on tuesday under the pressure is on. they have to get a draw in austria to progress to the knockouts. defeat could mean the holders fail to qualify for the next phase. what a for anthonyjoshua. now a two—time world heavyweight champion after winning belt back from andy ruiz after winning belt back from andy ruinr in saudi arabia on saturday. attention now turns to his next fight with fellow british fighter deli and white, add a couple of mandatory challenges in the mix. joshua has also given some insight into why he lost at the
