animated series has run since then for more than 600 episodes. that is all to come. now time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm jane dougall. who decided this was a good idea? italy's anti—racism campaign in football is described as a "sickjoke". liverpool have a quarter final cup match at villa park tonight — but this is the first team training in qatar. jurgen klopp tells us why they've prioritised this game, despite the country's poor human rights record. and one down two to go — t20 victory for england women over pakistan. also coming up in the programme... a disappointing finish earlier this year, but adam gemili says it's only the beginning.

before you know it i will be retiring and look back at your career thinking i could have done differently. i want to have no regrets. so i'm trying to take every opportunity. hello and welcome to sportsday. when these images were released as part of an anti—racism campain in italian football — many outside of ths country thought it was a spoof. but this is real. serie a have approved an artist who's used pictures of painted monkeys to highlight the problem of racism in italian football. several clubs have condemed the move including ac milan who said they hadn't been consulted. britian has serious problems
6:35 pm
with racism in football too, but is this just indicative of the lack of understanding in italian football of how to address racism? the artist behind the campaign has defended his work. earlier i spoke to anti—discrimination group kick it out and they described their reaction when they discovered the campaign wasa reaction when they discovered the campaign was a genuine attempt to combat racism. when i had established it was not a joke, i was shocked. everyone thought it was just inappropriate and we think it is great when the governing body or lea k wa nts to is great when the governing body or leak wants to do more to tackle racism but that is clear that it is clearly inappropriate and counter—productive and undermines any positive intent they may have had with the campaign. we really hope that they will reconsider
6:36 pm
replacing the graphics and using something else because apes and monkeys have no place in any kind of antiracism campaign wherever your reasons wait. italy have such an horrific problem with racism in football, black friday was a recent headline in the newspaper. giving players red cards for reacting to racism, monkey chants. did you see this campaign and just feel despair that there is no sign of progress? it is disappointing that they got it so it is disappointing that they got it so catastrophically wrong. but i think that there are positives in the sense that they are trying to address something and clearly they have done it in a very misguided way but that is a certain positive to the fact that they are now looking to address it. and also it is important that we do not get complacent about the problem in this
6:37 pm
country. it is easy when things go wrong in italy or russia to look over and point and saying they are rubbish and pat ourselves on the back but we have many problems with racism and discrimination in this country so it is imperative we do not use incidents like this to think that we are not having to tackle problems in our own country. absolutely. and did you hear the explanation from the artist as to why he used to monkeys? it wasjust the idea that we are all descended from apes but i think it is misguided and someone who clearly does not have a strong understanding of equality, of inclusion and you know you would think that the senior leadership had siri a probably do not have that understanding either. you have mario balotelli, moise kean, all black players who have
6:38 pm
been racially abused and had monkey noises in italian stadiums so to do something like this will only further dehumanise black people in that country. it will only serve to fuel i think the attitude that says that we can call black people monkeys. so they may have been positive intent but it was misguided and we really think they need to reconsider this campaign and clearly any future campaigns that they run. let's take you now to quatar where liverpool are after making the choice to prioritise the club world cup over the ca rabou cup. jurgen klopp and their senior team have travelled to the middle east to play mexican side monterray tomorrow, while their under 23's are in the midlands to take on aston villa in the quarter finals of the league cup. it's sparked debate about the volume of competitions in football, not to mention qatar's stance

groups associated with liverpool football clu b groups associated with liverpool football club who have not travelled because they would not feel that they could be themselves. it is a very serious thing to talk about and i think that these answers should be given by people who know more about it and if i can be influential in foot ball it and if i can be influential in football but i think in politics other people have to be influential. whatever i could say about that would not help the situation but just create another headline. that is not how it should work. i like you asking questions but i think i'm the wrong person to answer. as other athletes. because we are here, we arrived here and we were welcomed and everything is organised like it should be. that is our situation here. organising the competition wherever it is in the world fifa did that so they are the people who organised it and have to think about
6:41 pm
these kind of things. not athletes. sojurgen klopp addressing that issue earlier today. so liverpool are on this incredible run in the premier league at the moment, that winning momentum that has seen them go so winning momentum that has seen them go so many winning momentum that has seen them go so many points clear at the top of the table. is this going to be a distraction? james milner said it would be a welcome distraction because it is another trophy for them to win butjurgen klopp was asked about just what the club them to win butjurgen klopp was asked aboutjust what the club world cup meant to him and to liverpool. if you would ask me beforehand, if i think they should be a club world cup in the middle of the season i would say no. that is my honest opinion. but we speak about these kind of fixtures constantly, we are here and it is the most important competition in the world for us at this moment. so he says that they're in itand this moment. so he says that they're in it and they're going to try to win it. they say they're proud to represent europe and european have such a great recent history in the

guardiola has said he won't stand in arteta's way. when we have any new news i will know and you will know. we will know what happened. now he is here tomorrow training with us, he trained today. and that is it. former british cyclist jess varnish has won the right to appeal against the finding of a tribunal which ruled that she wasn't an employee of british cycling. the 29—year—old was controversially dropped from the gb programme for the 2016 rio olympics. in a statement varnish said she wanted to give athletes an opportunity "to hold to account employees of governing bodies." new orleans saints quarterback drew brees has become the all—time leader in touchdown passes. he made four throws for four touchdowns in their win over the indianapolis colts last night. it took him past payton manning and gives him a career total
