6:32 pm
on this centurion morning, what they found was frustration, the england squad ravaged by sickness, south africa unsympathetic, extending their lead further and further. archer eventually found a way through but it felt more like a blip. quintin de kock getting to grips with the best to grips with the best bowling england has to offer. ben stokes and stuart broad with a frank exchange of views soon seemed to put it behind them. stokes replaced broad and he immediately did this. the exhaustion of the effort was obvious. archer's fifth wicket of the innings greeted with only muted celebration. south africa's final flourish taking their lead to 375, time to rest and recover. there was a huge task ahead. it could have be tougher still had
6:33 pm
rory burns not been dropped before he really got going. when he did, he took england to 121 with a loss of only one wicket. he'll be back tomorrow and so, of course, will they. perhaps now with just a little more hope. so this is the state of play then with two days remaining. england need another 255 to win — what would be england's highest successful chase. rory burns is unbeaten on 77, alongside first innings top scorerjoe denly on 10. play resume at 8 in the morning. a day of mixed emotions for england. our cricket correspondent jonathan agnew is in south africa — and admits england do have the slightest chance of victory. it's been an extraordinary day. halfway through, we thought we had no chance of winning the match at all, they looked beaten and exhausted, they dragged themselves off the field with uncertainty about who was ill and it's come to the stage win at the end of the day they
6:34 pm
have given themselves a glimmer of hope. you have to be honest and say, it's still highly unlikely they will score all of these runs to win. if you lose one wicket, you might lose two or three, but we must also not forget that they have lost their last five test matches and that can sometimes be very hard to come back and counter and if you are not entirely convinced yourself, if you see the runs being added slowly to the scoreboard and coming down, you have not taken many wickets, then you never know, i think that could be something that counts in england's favour tomorrow. after pep guardiola said the title race was over after manchester city lost to wolves last night, saturday's premier league action has been mainly about those in the bottom half of the table. it could be a bit of a bleak midwinter for bournemouth. just one win in nine now. today's 2—nil defeat at brighton leaves them still preciouslyjust above the relegation zone. michael redford has more.
6:35 pm
christmas may have come and gone but there was still plenty of festive cheer at the amex stadium ahead of the fixtures in 2019 and is a new year draws closer, so does a sense of optimism. nearly 18 months after signing for brighton, he finally had his first goal which tookjust three minutes to arrive although bournemouth were nearly level moments later. after a frantic start, chances became limited, the second goal now crucial. brighton thought they had it thanks to dan burn before technology intervened. var deemed it offside. brighton continued to push. they came close twice. the second goal did arrive and in some style, a moment of magic. brighton's first win against bournemouth in 11 attempts, they head into 2020 in a confident mood. bournemouth, however,
6:36 pm
are in need of a fresh start. really good performance, controlled most of the game i thought, had a good idea of what we were trying to do and were are of the threats but i thought the players were fantastic. tough day. we know how good brighton and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb. we did recover ended well for remainderof climb. we did recover ended well for remainder of the first half. the most disappointing moment was the second half when we were looking to try and get back into the match but we didn't have the composure on the ball to do that. nigel pearson praised his side's intensity and unity as watford beat aston villa 3—0 at vicarage road. after leading them from the foot of the premier league, pearson remains unbeaten as watford boss. troy deeney scored twice — including a penalty. they're still second bottom but now just three points from safety. the important thing for us all is to
6:37 pm
get our performance right. i think we played with good intensity again. we started with a really positive intent and showed incredible unity out there on the pitch, also on the bench, and i think that is something that we have to make sure remains very, very high on our agenda. another new manager is working wonders. carlo ancelotti and everton have won back to back games with a 2—1win at newcastle united. dominic calvert lewin scored both goals to make it eight for the season and lift ancelotti's men into the top half of the table. we are judged for the result. the first 20 minutes of the game were really good. we scored two goals. the second part of the first half was really difficult. we have to improve. we need to have more control.
6:38 pm
in the second part of the first half, we suffered a lot. we came back in the game in the second half, newcastle drew the game but, in the end, i think we deserved to win. we didn't deserve to get beat. we we re we didn't deserve to get beat. we were sluggish at the start but after that we gave as good as we got. we had as good a chance as everton but we we re had as good a chance as everton but we were caught on a sucker punch. we we re left bare we were caught on a sucker punch. we were left bare at the back trying to win the match. southampton came from behind to earn a point at home to crystal palace. danny ings capitalised on martin kelly's loose backpass to cancel out james tomkins‘ 50th minute header. two 5:30 kick—offs in the premier league. bottom side norwich went ahead against spurs thanks to mario vranic. currently 1—1. demari grey had a first half penalty saved for leicester at west ham. kalechi ihaenacho put them ahead

before pablo fornals equalised. 1-1. burnley against manchester united is underway at 7:45. no fixtures in the scottish premiership today but a full programme tomorrow. the final round of games before the winter break. and what a way to round out 2019. the old firm derby, celtic and rangers. first versus second. a win for celtic would be a 12th league victory in a row and take them eight points clear. i'm really delighted. no matter who we play, no matter what the context has been, conditions, it's been a heavy month. they played absolutely brilliantly at times and they are the spotlight all the time. everyone is looking for a chink in the armour but in the main, they have won the games really well which is a big plus for the players.
6:40 pm

a super over against city rivals thunder, he then bowled that decisive over too and restricted alex hales and the thunder to win by a single run. northampton are back on top of the premiership — for a day at least. it was an entertaining clash against gloucester at franklins gardens this afternoon where even a hattrick from louis rees zammit wasn't quite enough to stop the saints who won by 33 points to 26. lydia campbell watched this one. it was time to see if saints could finish the decade on a high. but gloucester were hoping for something similar and they took an early lead. the saints have a 100% record at home this season and they eventually got their opening try. mikey heywood driving over. the second half started

6:44 pm
who beat the former bdo world champion steve beaton by four sets to two. he'll play the defending champion michael van gerwen next. now you know we have april fools day in the uk. well, did you know that today is the spanish equivalent? well we didn't, so we got rather curious when real sociedad tweeted that former wonderkid martin 0deegard was joining manchester city. the alarm bells should have been ringing by the fact the norwegian international is actually on loan from real madrid so couldn't technically join from sociedad anyway. it was the final sentence of the announcement that gave it away — "we are forced to take this difficult decision in order to avoid possible media storm for the next six months. what a relief!" that's all from sportsday. totte n ha m tottenham have equalised. we'll have more for you at 7:30. now on bbc news, colin paterson meets the cast of gavin and stacey on set, as they reunite for the first time in ten years,
