6:33 pm
a warm welcome to the programme. if liverpool are running away with the premier league — manchester city have taken a big step to being best of the rest. they hammered aston villa this afternoon to move up to second — still 14 points behind the league leaders but still providing plenty of entertainment nonetheless. joe lynskey reports. there are a brave faces at villa park, but at the foot of the premier league, things get bleak quickly. to climb up the table, aston villa have turned to new signings. this week, they brought in danny drinkwater on loan. a man who four years ago won

the title with leicester, and knows what riyad marius can do. the former team—mates are now at opposite ends of the league. and mahrez at city is the one who is played on. drinkwater has played just one league match in two years. you could see his demise in city's second goal. here, losing the ball inside the box, mahrez, 2-0. he the ball inside the box, mahrez, 2—0. he wasn't the only aston villa player responsible. sergio aguero had the space for shooting practice. just 28 minutes in, the optimism had run out. by half—time, the champions had made another. kevin to breiner‘s perfect cross finished off for four. still, city farm records to go for. sergio aguero‘s second of the match may premier league history. he is now the all—time top scorer from overseas. before the end, there was more. at 670, sergio aguero had a hat—trick for the 12th time, one more than alan shearer‘s record. at stoppage time, the home side won and

scored a penalty, but they are now inside the bottom three. as city run out of landmarks, aston villa ran out of landmarks, aston villa ran out of landmarks, aston villa ran out of hope. villa's fight against relegation wasn't helped by watford today who leapfrogged both them and bournemouth with a crushing 3—0 win on the south coast. it lifts them out of the drop zone for the first time all season but for bournemouth — they're heading in the wrong way. patrick gearey watched this one glance at the league table and you will see bournemouth started this one point above watford. look closer and you will find them facing in opposite directions. lately, bournemouth have been sinking. they were met by watford's fast rising tide. the hornets swarmed before abdoulaye doucoure provided the sting. watford picked up ten points from five games before this, a renaissance built around two men, the new manager, nigel pearson, and the old reliable captain, troy deeney. here, a finish that was an extension of his personality, a bullish certainty that is essential in relegation fights. contrast that to what bournemouth are offering. games like these can decide seasons, but they seem
6:36 pm
to shrink from their task. those are not faces of confident men, eddie howe knew a ninth league defeat in ii was coming. his team were powerless as watford queued up to deliver the final punch. as roberto parreira made it three, they knew they were out of the bottom three and bournemouth wonder how much further they will fall. not a great day for defences in the wsl either. bristol city shipped six at chelsea whilst arsenal hammered four past brighton to extend their lead at the top of the table to three points. it was a match that had a real sense of deja vu about it too — arsenal and brighton met twice in 2019, both times, arsenal won 4—0. for brighton to change things in 2020, they would have to cope with arsenal's stars. about three minutes in, danielle van de donk showed how hard that can be. poor defending from brighton left jill roord unmarked and wide open, she was not going to miss.
6:37 pm
it took more than 45 minutes for brighton to finally get their first chance on goal. not one emily simkins will want to watch back. arsenal continued their onslaught in the second half, withjordan nobbs adding a third. brighton would have settled for that scoreline, but arsenal were not finished. the fourth goal finally came with ten minutes to spare. beth mead added her name to the scoresheet and completed another 4—0 victory for the champions. let's have quick look at some of the days other sports stories. cardiff and swansea played out a goalless draw in the south wales derby in the championship. both teams hit the woodwork in the match as swansea miss the chance to climb into the playoff places. ding junhui is out of the masters snooker. the newly crowned uk champion was surprisingly beaten 6—3 byjoe perry in the first round in london. perry rattled off the final three frames in a 6—3 win. mark selby faces ali carter in half an hour. and after knocking out the new england patriots last week

the tennesse titans continued where they left off by surprising the baltimore ravens in the nfl play offs last night — running back derrick henry became quarter back throwing a touchdown pass for corey davis in the titans‘ 28—12 win. tonight, kansas city play houston and green bay host seattle. serena williams has used her first title win in three years to send a message of support to the victims of the australian bushfires. she won the auckland international and will donate her prize money to the relief effort. it's a significant win for williams — her first in three years as katie gornall reports. the great champions are those who endure when they are tested. in two decades of dominance, serena williams has seen it all. two and a half years ago, she nearly died giving birth to her daughter, alexis. understandably, the road back to the top has been long and uncertain. williams has walked out into five finals since becoming a parent and lost them all.
6:39 pm
early on, she seemed to be heading down that same path as her compatriot, jessica pegula, raced into a 3—1 lead but then as we have seen time and again over the years, williams gathered herself, hitting back with her customary power and precision. after wrapping up the first set 6—3 in auckland, williams broke early in the second and stayed out in front. eventually, she closed out the set and the match for a victory which clearly meant so much. and with the australian open around the corner, williams is hungry for more. i'm feeling pretty good. i'm feeling fit, like i have had some good matches and long rallies, short rallies, power players, elements. this is exactly what i needed going into melbourne. a record—equalling 24th grand slam title is now in her sights and yet again, serena williams has proved that age and motherhood is no obstacle to success. katie gornall, bbc news. the men's year has started with the new team competition —

the atp cup and novak djokovic led serbia to victory, beating spain in the final. djokovic didn't lose a match across the week, and in the final, saw off world number one rafa nadal in the singles before teaming up with victor troicki in the deciding doubles rubber. he described it as one of the nicest moments in his career. northampton saints‘ director of rugby chris boyd apologised for his side's performance against bennetton in the european champions cup this afternoon — even though they won. the 33—20 win was enough to setup a fascinating final weekend as a number of english clubs battle for the best runners up spots to make the last eight. james burridge was at franklin's gardens. this was a topsy—turvy game, a complacent performance, too, from northampton. even though they scored inside the opening six minutes, after that, they were mistake ridden. they had so many chances, there were knock—ons all over the park, and the line—out was a total shambles.
6:41 pm
they lost five or six opportunities inside their opponent's 22. bennetton capitalised on those mistakes, scoring an intercepting try under the posts. they went in up at half—time. a choice team talk from the head coach seemed to make the difference, because after 60 minutes, northampton pulled away and scored four tries in the second a0. they've got the five points they needed today. but their coach was not impressed. anybody who has any respect for the game of rugby, we apologise for that performance. why was it so bad? i think it was just one of those games that we didn't show enough respect to the game, to the opposition. we talked about the fact that we could probably give ourselves a chance to qualify, we needed to score five points, so the brain kicks in, every time you get the ball, you're trying to score a try. northampton travel to lyon next week and they must win that if they want to go to the quarterfinals.
6:42 pm
they will be challenged by saracens and gloucester. it will be a fascinating week for english clubs next weekend in europe. it's five out of five for leinster and they're guaranteed to top that pool after beating lyon 42—14. they ran in six tries in total which should be enough for a home quarterfinal — barring some odd results next weekend. munster‘s campaign looks all but over after they lost 39—22 to pool 4 leaders racing 92. teddy toma's try was the pick of the bunch for racing. munster are one off the bottom of the pool. it was an emotional afternoon at headlingley stadium as leeds rhinos honoured rob burrow — their former player who has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. originally planned as a testimonal forjamie jones—buchanan, the sell—out match against rhinos rivals bradford also helped raise money for burrow and his family, to help pay for all the treatment and care that he will need in the coming years. leeds were comfortably leading when a host of former players joined

the action, and their was a huge ovation when burrowjoined the game. fittingly leeds won 34—10. rob burrow, hero of headingley. over the moon, overwhelmed, humbled, all of them words put into one. absolutely amazing day, and one i will certainly remember. you can't really know what it feels like until you do it. i've been lucky enough to win some trophies, but that, today, bringing the kids out, was unreal. it was a lovely day. the fans have had my back, the plane of 16, they have had my back or throughout my career have had my back or throughout my careerand have had my back or throughout my career and they were there at the end today. i'm so grateful, it means

the world. once again, the england cricket squad has been struck by a sickness bug. captainjoe root is the latest to be stricken with a stomach upset — forcing him to miss training in port elizabeth today ahead of the third test against south africa on thursday. the start of england's tour saw them plagued by a virus and whilst most of the squad have recovered, they've also been hindered by tour ending injuries to opener rory burns and seamerjames anderson. england's leading wicket taker is likely to be replaced by either jofra archer and mark wood. their participation in the third test is dependant on them increasing their workload in the next few days. a huge blow. the best seam bowler we have ever had and he was bowling fantastically well in that last game, so it is a big loss. but i would like to see those two guys on the sidelines come in and potentially play. they are bowling fast and they are exciting guys and woody is chomping at the bit to get back on the field and he has been working hard
6:45 pm
to get to that place. we know whatjofra has been able to do in his short test career so far. two exciting guys to potentially have to come back in. from the test to t20 where we witnessed some brutal hitting in the australia big bash in melbourne. australian all—rounder marcus stoinis smashed 147 not out in the melbourne stars‘ win over sydney sixers — the highest individual score in the competition. he bludgeoned eight sixes and 13 fours in his 79 ball knock. his opening partnership of 207 was also a big bash record. cricket australia have announced some legendary players are coming out of retirement to play in a t20 charity match to raise money for bushfire relief. shane warne, and ricky ponting seen here with former women's captain alex blackwell, will captain the teams made up of other famous former aussie cricket stars. the game will take place on february the 8th, at a venue yet to be confirmed. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more in the next hour. now on bbc news — it's the travel show.
