moments in his career. northampton saints‘ director of rugby chris boyd apologised for his side's performance against bennetton in the european champions cup this afternoon — even though they won. the 33—20 win was enough to setup a fascinating final weekend as a number of english clubs battle for the best runners up spots to make the last eight. james burridge was at franklin's gardens. this was a topsy—turvy game, a complacent performance, too, from northampton. even though they scored inside the opening six minutes, after that, they were mistake ridden. they had so many chances, there were knock—ons all over the park, and the line—out was a total shambles. they lost five or six opportunities inside their opponent's 22. bennetton capitalised on those mistakes, scoring an intercepting try under the posts. they went in up at half—time. a choice team talk from the head coach seemed to make the difference, because after 60 minutes, northampton pulled away and scored four tries in the second a0.

they've got the five points they needed today. but their coach was not impressed. anybody who has any respect for the game of rugby, we apologise for that performance. why was it so bad? i think it was just one of those games that we didn't show enough respect to the game, to the opposition. we talked about the fact that we could probably give ourselves a chance to qualify, we needed to score five points, so the brain kicks in, every time you get the ball, you're trying to score a try. northampton travel to lyon next week and they must win that if they want to go to the quarterfinals as runners up. they will be challenged for those places by saracens and gloucester. it will be a fascinating week for english clubs next weekend in europe. it's five out of five for leinster and they're guaranteed to top that pool after beating lyon 42—14. they ran in six tries in total which should be enough for a home quarterfinal —
