hello and thanks for joining us on sport today. we start with a story that's sending shockwaves through major league baseball: the sacking of both the manager and general manager of the houston astros. aj hinch and jeff luhnow have been dismissed from the posts, following an investigation which found they cheated by "stealing signs" when they won the world series in 2017. here are the details of the sanctions imposed by major league baseball. both men have been suspended by the league until the end of the 2020 season, houston have been fined the maximum penalty of $5 million. the astros have also had their next two first and second round draft picks taken away. but the team's ownerjim crane has gone even further and says hinch and luhnow are finished in houston. i have high standards for the city and the franchise and i'm going above and beyond the penalty. today, i have made the decision to dismiss

them. we need to move forward with a clea n them. we need to move forward with a clean side. in the astros will become stronger. a stronger organisation because of this today. you can be confident that we will a lwa ys you can be confident that we will always do the right thing and we will not have this happen again on my watch. let's hear now from baseball reporter gabriel baumgartner, who explains what stealing signs involves and why it's so frowned upon. it is something that is very much frowned upon in major league baseball but it typically exist as kind of a game within the game. thus, if the opposing team can decipher what the other team's signs are through the naked eye, then they risk retaliation from the opposing team, say one of the batters might get hit or they might experience

something that they don't like. but there is a stark difference between that and using high—powered cameras which is what major league baseball has concluded the astros did and created a system to do which is to steal signs on the way the naked eye could not possibly pick up. and that is the crux of the problem. the astros were now using centrefield cameras within their own stadium to pick up the signs from opposing teams, relay that to the bench and then create... whether they would bang ona then create... whether they would bang on a trashcan or they would whistle and that would signify two opposing hitters what the next pitch would be in because that can't be picked up with the naked eye, i think that is why major league baseball said this is out of bounds and asa baseball said this is out of bounds and as a result and very harsh punishment.

now to football and barcelona boss ernesto valverde has been sacked despite leading the catalan giants to back—to—back league titles. it's the first time barcelona have sacked a coach in the middle of a season since louis van gaal in 2003. they're currently top of the table in spain, and through to the last 16 of the champions league, but it wasnt enough. hugh ferris has more on valverde‘s track record at barcelona. valverde replaced luis enrique at the camp nou in may 2017. it appeared to be an immediate success. barca went unbeaten in the league until the penultimate game of the season. the title was secured and the copa del rey. another title followed the next season but doubts always have always remained about whether he provides the kind of football for which the club is famous. key losses in consecutive seasons in europe are almost remembered more than his successes. first to roma, and then at liverpool having had sizeable leads in both ties. it was thought the defeat at anfield would prove costly. but valverde hung on to hisjob for a season in which convincing

displays have been rare. so valverde is gone but barcelona have wasted no time in announcing his successor. quique setien will take over the reigns on a 2.5 year contract with the spanish champions. his appointment will be something of a surprise to many, given his modest coaching history. he is yet to win any silverware as a manager. he began his coaching career with his local club racing santander, leading them back into the top division in his first season in charge. setien's longest spell anywhere was six years at lugo, winning promotion to the second tier in 2012. hejoined las palmas in 2015 with the club in the relegation zone and they finished 11th that season. most recently, setien spent two years at real betis before being sacked last year.

winds and also heavy rain. and the rain has swept its way northwards and eastwards, eventually clearing away from the south—east early on tuesday, lots of showers packing in behind across the north and west, snow will fall over the high ground. watch out for icy patches across the north of the uk to start tuesday morning. less cold the further south that you are. we look to the south—west, the next area of low pressure, moving up to bring another spell of rain and gales as we hear through the course of tuesday. still stays quite blustery across the north of the uk, as storm brendan continues to retreat northwards. there will be some sunshine through the morning but the cloud builds and the rain starts to back into the south and the west, pushes northwards, could be windy across the eastern side of england as well on tuesday. stronger winds perhaps than what we saw on monday. 40—50 mile an hour gusts, 65 plus across some of the headlands in the south—west.

in the north it's going to remain quite chilly with these wintry showers, four or five degrees but in the south, 10—13 celsius, it will be quite mild despite the wind and the rain. that system pushes off into the north sea as we head into wednesday, then we are in a run of west, south—westerly blustery winds, with sunshine and showers. will take a time for that weather front to clear away from the south—east through wednesday morning, but eventually it will and then many of us will see some sunshine but it will be quite blustery particularly in the north and west where there will be wintry showers here. a few showers around the irish sea coast as well. you will notice the temperatures down a little bit so it will feel a bit cooler on wednesday but at least many of us will have the sunshine to compensate. it is a short lived wind of fine weather because the next frontal system will move up through the south—west to bring more wet and windy weather for thursday, so the winds could be quite strong. some of the heaviest rain in the north and the west

of the country, a bit of sunshine further east but it looks like the clouds will build up as we move through the day. and the rain will be quite heavy in the south—west, in towards wales. again, perhaps a little bit milder in the south, double—figure values here, 7—9 degrees further north. and then it's all changed. to end the week, it looks like high pressure will begin to move in as that low pressure clears away so it will settle down. one thing you will notice, it will turn colder, particularly as we head on into the weekend.
