6:30 pm
hello, this is bbc news. i'm lukwesa burak. the headlines: psychiatrists call for social media companies to hand over data so they can research what the online world does to children's mental health. calls for a public and anti cuts to the permission service following the inquest into the death of connor marshall who was killed by an offender who was on privation. iran's supreme leader, ayatollah ali khamenei, has appealed for unity, following anti—government protests last week, over the accidental shooting down of a passenger plane.
6:31 pm
it comes as the canadian prime minister, justin trudeau, says iran must pay compensation for the shooting down of the ukrainian plane. in a moment it will be time for sportsday, but first a look at what else is coming up this evening on bbc news. we'll be bringing you more on how glasgow plans to become ‘carbon neutral‘ in ten years time — amid new warnings over global warming. after emily thornberry launched her campaign to become labour leader today, we'll bring you the latest from rebecca long—bailey's launch event this evening. and at 10:40 and 11:30 this evening our guests joining me for tonight's papers are david bond, nicola bartlett. that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news, it's time for sportsday.
6:32 pm
hello, i'm olly foster, gere‘s what's coming up on sportsday this evening. the saracens salary cap scandal, is there battle against relegation now futile 7 englands cricketer‘s are on top in south africa we hear from johanna konta on why she will play at the australian open but won't be playing for great britain in the fed cup. also coming up in the programme: can the roses get their revenge? every match against new zealand coming up this weekend. conor mcgregor is back after 15 months away from the octagon.
6:33 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. evening, last year, after an eight—month investigation, premiership rugby found that saracens had broken the salary cap regulations over three seasons, a period in which they twice became premiership and european champions. they were fined £5 million and docked 35 points in november. the chairman and owner nigel wray accepted the punishment, eventually, and insisted that they were complying strictly with the regulations this season, but he stood down a few weeks ago and there is pressure on the club to prove that they haven't broken the cap again. it's understood that they will be relegated. we thought we had that hammer blow last november but here we go again. they are in a dark place this evening, and they? absolutely, unprecedented times of this, the saracens and endless rugby. we understand that earlier this week,
6:34 pm
the other premiership clubs held something of a crisis meeting and made very clear to the premiership league administrative individuals that they felt something had to be done because what has emerged is, although saracens, when they were hit with that production and fine earlier this season, gave assurances that they would cut their cloth accordingly and try to balance the books, that simply has proved to be on them. other clubs have not wanted their players, players are reluctant to ta ke their players, players are reluctant to take wage cuts or go out on loan. that is emerged in the last couple of weeks so as a result of this meeting, a decision appears to have been made that saracens had to be punished even more gravely. last night that news emerged. a crisis meeting was called with all the saracens squad summoned to their training base short time away from here. they were then told that it
6:35 pm
was inevitable that, barring a miracle, they would be automatically relegated because of the fact they we re relegated because of the fact they were unable to comply with the salary cap regulations for a fourth consecutive season salary cap regulations for a fourth consecutive season stop the news was broken to them, they are trying to prepare the squad for a really important european on sunday against racing 92 here and so we watch them train earlier on. all of their big international stars were here. the murder was relaxed, there was no obvious sign of any tension or sense of crisis. we briefly got a word with a few as they left the training but they simply refused to comment and said they had been asked not to say anything. it was clear by then that they had been told that the previously unthinkable happened to them and that at some stage this season, they will be automatically relegated and full down to the
6:36 pm
second—tier championship. the man who has been trying desperately to off—load some of his stars in order to comply with regulations is the interim chief executive. as you can see, we cut up at him as he left the stadium, having held meetings with the league. he was in no mood to chat as you can see. in fact, he places his hand on the cameraman‘s camera and made no comment. no message to the fans, many of whom will be worried about what happens next season and of course, the players to face an uncertain future going forward. it is pretty much curtains that they will be relegated. laura scott is here with me, who broke this story eight months ago. november, without
6:37 pm
that was the ultimate sanction, they got their comeuppance in their fight against relegation, it seems to have been handled incredibly badly when charlotte was on the cards to months ago that they would not be able to get their house in order because of these high—paid stars. get their house in order because of these high—paid starsli get their house in order because of these high-paid stars. i think that isa these high-paid stars. i think that is a massive source of anger among the clubs, that this was in response to thejudgment, the clubs, that this was in response to the judgment, there was no contrition from saracens. in fact they said there was no cause for concern, they were complying with the cap and there was no need to off—load players. instantly, when thatjudgment off—load players. instantly, when that judgment came out, off—load players. instantly, when thatjudgment came out, of course there are questions asked, what does that mean for the season? they have added elliot daly said there is a frustration about the way it has been handled from november to january. there was little activity going on and then injanuary, nigel wray stepped down. they should in this process whereby they tried of the last two weeks to see if they could comply and it looks like it
6:38 pm
has all come to nothing and they will be relegated in the coming days. stay with us because this is 110w days. stay with us because this is now of the sea going to have a massive impact on that squad. let us hear from massive impact on that squad. let us hearfrom former player, massive impact on that squad. let us hear from former player, andy goode. every player will have an individual choice to make, did they stay in the championship? if they do get relegated, i have no doubt they will bounce straight back up. did they ta ke bounce straight back up. did they take a year where it is a sabbatical and then perhaps they don't play for their country but it gives them the right to come back into the pepper ship year later and ultimately, the question is, how do saracens did with that? how do these world stars that are earning a substantial amount of money, had a fit that into playing in the championship and coming back to the premiership. there's a big one, isn't it? he's mentioning the money going out, does
6:39 pm
that fit with them being in the championship? no doubt that the squad will have to be dismantled some way. i think it appears inevitable that there will be some departures. we don't know her yet but all these players, they got individual decisions to make. for the likes of eoin farrell, his boyhood club, does he stick with them as england captain in the championship? 0r them as england captain in the championship? or does he try to make a move. but will not be easy. none of the clubs have much wiggle room within their budgets to take in new players, especially the likes of eoin farrell who commands a high salary. i think we will see a new era here at saracens. these extraordinary times to just show this dramatic volcanic grace one of the dominant clubs and in this by. it's been a good day for england's cricketers in port elizabeth. they declared their first innings on 499—9 after centuries for ben stokes and ollie pope in the third test against south africa. at the close on day two,
6:40 pm
the hosts were 60 for 2. here's our sports correspondent andy swiss. if the england fans were hoping for some flag—waving fun, they were in the right place. first, ben stokes. at his blistering best. so long in fa ct, at his blistering best. so long in fact, it ended up balancing a nearby road. new bowls, please. well, not quite, as one intrepid fan finally traded. stokes did his best to lose it again. that took him 4,000 test i’u ns it again. that took him 4,000 test runs and another landmark soon beckoned. 100 it is for ben stokes. he hasjust been named the beckoned. 100 it is for ben stokes. he has just been named the worlds best player. stokes, with a superb 120. england soon had another century on, 22—year—old 0llie pope, showing a composure way beyond his yea rs. showing a composure way beyond his years. the dream is complete. after
6:41 pm
reaching his first test 100, he also started to have some fun. the england camp loved it, south africa, not so much. pope later said he could not take the smile of his face after steering england to a hefty 499. south african batsmen had to climba mountain 499. south african batsmen had to climb a mountain and semester. don best struck twice. some start for him, some for england. let's get more on this now from for england batsman jonathan trott, who was particularly impressed with 0llie pope's maiden test century the thing that struck me and impressed me hugely, he didn't feel he had to play like ben stokes, he was very, very comfortable himself. he took the attack to the south africans but also, when you lose the
6:42 pm
momentum and then jos africans but also, when you lose the momentum and thenjos buttler came in and got out as well, for a young man, the way he marshalled the rest of the innings and we saw the flamboyance at the end where he was ramping apace guys of the keeper when all the fillers were back, but also the mindset that he didn't change too much and feel like you had to do something different. he's just 22, how close to you think england are to cracking that? we have rory burns side as well, he would come in and add to the top order so hopefully, crawley can get a few runs and get confident playing international cricket. straightaway, within a couple of innings, we have a 22—year—old scoring 100. crawley
6:43 pm
looks good so straightaway these players are starting to emerge in test cricket which is very exciting. ben stokes and joe root are experienced players and will certainly enjoy having these experienced players getting england towards big figures which we got today. in the game situation, looking good for them to go ahead in the series? another youngster who has come in was called in and is taking his opportunity really well. today, there is going to be a little bit of turn. interesting to see how he goes. sometimes when the workers are turning, you're almost expected to win the game. he handled that pressure. hopefully they can turn up tomorrow and work hard. the south africa bullet will miss the final test because of his two provocative celebration on day one. a lot of
6:44 pm
debate as to whether he actually deserved that punishment. he only got the one point which isn't a ban in itself, is because of prior history that he has got three points from the series against australia which was 22 months ago. if it had been another month, those points would have been expunged. u nfortu nate for would have been expunged. unfortunate for him but he knew he had points so i don't see any problem with the celebration. i think they had taken exception to the fact he was running of the wicked but then ran towards george bridge. if he had done it towards the slips, i don't think we would have seen that. jonathan trott, who is on the cricket social back tomorrow, you can follow that on day three from port elizabeth on the website. let's have a look at some other headlines today premier league referees have been advised to make use
6:45 pm
of the pitchside monitors to review red card decisions. the monitors are always available to the referee around var decisions but haven't been used once this season in the league. david gilbert is through to the semi finals of the masters snooker on his tournament debut. gilbert knocked in a break of 144 on the way to beating stephen maguire by six frames to two. carlos sainz has won his third dakar rally at the age of 57. the two—time world rally champion eased through the final stage in saudi arabia to win by over six minutes. honda's ricky brabec became the first american to win the motorbike classification that means there will be four british women in the first round. joanne is still nursing a knee problem even though she is going to be taking part. no andy murray who has had to put back the start of his
6:46 pm
season with a pelvic injury. the news on andy berry is not unexpected. no australian open and now we know he will not play in february. the big concern is that if this injury is related to his hip surgery, which seems entirely possible, it may not be quite such a straightforward problem to fix. he does not appear to be spending much time on the tennis court, it is a gym work and yoga which has stood him in good stead throughout his career. as forjohanna konta, she says her injury, the picture last year, is not serious. she once to be able to play the sport for as long as humanly possible. able to play the sport for as long as humanly possiblelj able to play the sport for as long as humanly possible. i am not playing for the cup this year. i had a good chat with and and i have the
6:47 pm
full support and it is setup decision to make because the fed cup as something has always been close to my heart and i have had some incredible experiences in my career and the fed cup and i am definitely looking to have some more. but for the season, because it's an olympic season as well, ijust need to take ca re of season as well, ijust need to take care of my body and make some decisions that are not always easy but hopefully will help me have the longevity that i want. still to come on sportsday: we talk bobsleigh at the winter youth 0lympics — with a 17—year—old looking to become one of the first women to ever compete in olympic monobob when it becomes an event in 2022. tomorrow night in las vegas sees the return of conor mcgregor. the former two weight ufc champion fights for the first time in 15 months. his opponent is donald the cowboy cerrone. a little earlier i spoke to mixed martial arts journalist nick peet about what his return means for the sport.
6:48 pm
it is absolutely huge. he gets bums on seats like else has ever done before so make no mistake, 2019 was the most productive year. every casino, every hotel has billboards up, all pointing to the fact that saturday night, conor mcgregor returns against cowboy. 13 months since we last seen him fight. going toa since we last seen him fight. going to a different conor mcgregor, how has he developed as a fighter, his 31 now? we don't know until the cage door closes but what if saint this week is a very different conor mcgregor in the way he speaks to the media and about his opponent. he is one of the best trash talkers in the game and yet we haven't seen that this week. we've seen a new, mature conor mcgregor, assured and
6:49 pm
courteous, but all that will change when the cage door closes and we will see what he is all about. if he is as focused as he says he is and he has been as diligent with his training back in 2013 when he won the game. if he has gone to that conor mcgregor or even better, then 2020 could be a phenomenal yearfor all conor mcgregorfans 2020 could be a phenomenal yearfor all conor mcgregor fans but also for the ufc as well. does the sport needs that or does it really need him to keep his nose clean this time if you can? of course, all sports wa nt if you can? of course, all sports want their athletes to be real models but fight sports and controversy models but fight sports and co ntrove rsy over models but fight sports and controversy over the years goes hand—in—hand whether it took about muhammad ali ormike hand—in—hand whether it took about muhammad ali or mike tyson. controversy sells and keeps the fans interested. it has been 15 months for connor, it has been disastrous.
6:50 pm
he has been more on the front pages and back pages. if he gets back to doing what he does best is weekend, conor mcgregor cannot only climb back on top but potentially add to a legacy that has already got him into conversation at the crest of all time. it is here to make a statement, he once that finish, and early finish, and then push on to 2020 and his title. everyone in the fc, regardless of status, everybody once fight with him because he is the biggest military get in the sport. the england women's cricket squad has been named ahead of their tri—series against australia and india, as well as the t20 world cup. the only change to the squad since the recent series wind over the england women's cricket squad has been named pakistan, is georgia elwiss replacing spinner kirstie gordon. 0ur reporterjo currie caught up with the team's new head coach lisa keightley, who explained the reasoning behind recalling elwiss.
6:51 pm
i think, looking at what we going to play on over in australia, itjust made more sense to go with an extra seamer and obviously, georgia has played out in those conditions and she has batted well out there as well so are pretty much the change was due to the conditions that we are playing on. i have had a lot of conversations, i obviously didn't do it by myself. heather had a big part to play. ali maiden of italy as assistant coach with the team for a number of years, he had good input as well, so between a really good grip of selectors, become together to announce and select what we thought was the best team to take out to australia. netball‘s nations cup starts this weekend, the first round of matches are in nottingham before the teams move onto birmingham with the final round of matches in london including the final. let's speak live to to
6:52 pm
the england roses ellie cardwell. a busy week ahead and a tought start against the world champions it certainly is, we've been in training all week for this game. it's going to be tapped playing against the world champions but we prepared really well and we are up for sunday. you then head to birmingham to face south africa mid—week before facing jamaica at the copperbox, and then you hope you'll have done enough to have made the final how how have you come together as agroup under the new head coach jess thirlby. it's been amazing to have her come up it's been amazing to have her come up with been working with hertz in september. we have a lot of new players as well, young players coming through, so we are just putting it together now for this test series and hopefully bring out
6:53 pm
some good games and get to the final exa m some good games and get to the final exam day. reaching the semifinal, you got the bronze medal at the world cup last year, it's going to be great to take netball around the country again, isn't it? how do you think the sport is faring amongst other things in a busy year coming 7 other things in a busy year coming up? netball is growing in the country. i was in liverpool around the world cup and just to see the amount of people that were around, it was incredible to see and just being able to go into different parts of the country and it is going to be incredible to get all the fans around for that. i am just excited to have a home crowd around us and supporting us all the way. good luck, looking forward to the matches. at the next winter olympics in beijing in 2022 — women will have equality in olympic
6:54 pm
bobsleigh for the first time ? with monobob being added to the line—up there will be two events for both genders and one of those athletes hoping to be in contention is charlotte longden. the 17—year—old only started the sport last year but will compete for team gb at the youth olympics on sunday. bbc 0lympic sports reporter nick hope is in lausanne for us. bobsleigh can be spectacular but also pretty scary. i've never been more scared of anything in my life. absolutely terrified. the first time, igot absolutely terrified. the first time, i got pushed up so i had absolutely no control and that was probably scary as to think, knowing i was going down the mountain and i couldn't stop until i was at the bottom, or crashing! that was the scariest moment. as in as i finished
6:55 pm
the first run, i absolutely loved it. you have the biggest adrenaline rush. she gets her sporting kicks in all kinds of ways. from a young age, i was doing cross—country and swimming very competitively and then i moved to hockey, netball and athletics, which identify three yea rs. athletics, which identify three years. only this year have i stopped doing hockey and it is merely athletics and bobsleigh now. men's bobsleigh have been part of the programme since the very first winter games in 1924 but women had to wait until 2002 to be included. they will in beijing, 2022, equality for events for two genders. that is a huge best. i think it is fully important because from here, i can then build on and hopefully go to more future 0lympics then build on and hopefully go to more future olympics and having equality for women there, it would make it easier for me and equality for women there, it would make it easierfor me and be more enjoyable, i think. what is it like being part of team gb and having
6:56 pm
those 0lympic rings on your top? such a proud and amazing feeling, i just want to do my best so i can make great britain proud. whichever sporting pipe she takes, should be a step towards her ultimate dream of senior pics. a reminder of the top story, saracens will be relegated this season matter where they finish in the league because of continued breaches of the salary cap regulations this season. what's more on that breaking news story throughout the rest of the day on bbc news but for me, that's all, had a great weekend.
6:57 pm
it has been a day of transition, certainly a calderdale and some of the showers have yielded some snow and there's still a fee shower is to come before the end of play this evening. 0ver come before the end of play this evening. over the weekend, very different. cold nights and fine days because we have high pressure coming in. you can see showers in southern areas and they will keep going in the north into tomorrow. wintry over the north into tomorrow. wintry over the hills so they could be ice around with temperatures dropping to freezing or below. 0therwise, around with temperatures dropping to freezing or below. otherwise, it does look like a fine and dry started the day. it will be a cold one. showers eventually easing in the north but still that when perhaps a little bit more cloud coming into the south but for most of us, temperatures will be down on those of recent days but given the sunshine and later went, it will fill quite pleasant. a cold start again on sunday and monday. more on the website.
