hello, this is sport today, from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: we are alive at the australian open on day 2 of the championships, where we have already seen and upset. the number 12 seed, konta, we have already seen and upset. the number12 seed, konta, is we have already seen and upset. the number 12 seed, konta, is out. the toronto raptors proved too good for the hawks in atlanta as they make it four successive wins. and spar move off the bottom of serie a with a shock to — one win over atlanta. hello there and welcome to the programme, where we start with tennis, because the second day of the year's first grand slam, the australian open, is well under way in melbourne. monday's rain has
1:46 am
cleared but they are playing catch up cleared but they are playing catch up after the suspension of matches on monday. let's head across to our reporterjohn watson. they have been a few matches already in the morning session. someone who is divisive when it comes to opinion about where they stand in the game is maria sharapova, and she heads out for a wildcard next. what is the view as to how she is going to go this year? yes, i think that even maria sharapova herself will say that she has not got particular high expectations when you look at some of the difficulty she has had, certainly last year with a long—standing shoulder problem. but whenever she takes to the court she is box office. she pulls the crowds and we can expect that later on. she will be out on rod laver arena shortly. that shoulder problem has caused her a really difficult year, and she will be hoping she can get some sort of momentum going, as a former champion here, and try and put in some impressive performances. worth noting that she hasn't won a match at a grand slam since she reached the last 16 here last year, so that goes to show how tough it
1:47 am
has been for maria sharapova. not a particularly tough morning's work, for karolina pliskova, who came through comfortably against kristina mladenovic. a talented grand slam champion, and certainly deserves one, her talent deserves it. she lost last year to naomi osaka, and she will be hoping she can produce an impressive run, perhaps beyond the semifinals which she reached last year. someone who is already out, konta knocked out already. i am a pretty straight talking person, and if someone is not playing well, then fair enough. are there mitigating circumstances, do you think, forjohanna konta going out? possibly. she has as well been struggling with injuries. we know that. this is only her second tournament back since she competed at the us open last year. she has
1:48 am
had a knee problem which affected her in the latter stages of last year. so perhaps having that nastiness as well, and obviously that content with. but she lost against the really tricky opponent today, ons jabeur of tunisia. worth pointing out that konta obviously has been struggling with that knee injury, but she didn't look as though she was troubled by it on court. a tricky opponent played some difficult shots, mixes it up, and konta was put under a lot of pressure early on. and that has certainly cost her, and she will be bitterly disappointed as she carries huge british hopes at this australian open. she was a previous semifinalist here before. a big upset, the 12th seed out this morning. and rafael nadal always gets everyone in there and they get right behind him no matter who he is playing, but 19 grand slam titles, he has played in five australian open finals but he has only won one of them. why would that be?” open finals but he has only won one of them. why would that be? i think the calibre of the opponent he has come up against, quite frankly. as we know, he is the world number one, but on these hard courts out here in
1:49 am
australia, it seems that novak djokovic just australia, it seems that novak djokovicjust reigned australia, it seems that novak djokovic just reigned supreme australia, it seems that novak djokovicjust reigned supreme as he chases what would be a record extending eighth australian open title this year. let's not right rafa nadal off. he has that one solitary australian open title to his name, obviously would have preferred it to be a lot more. he has made fourfinals here preferred it to be a lot more. he has made four finals here since losing to know that djokovic on two of those occasions. it seems that when he comes up against djokovic on these hard courts, as we saw here last year, he comes undone. amazing to think that we're still talking about the big three once again, fetter, djokovic, natal, the top three seeds this year's tournament, and they come in as top 315 years after they first played together at after they first played together at a grand slam —— federer. this incredible run that they had, and arguably the talent between themselves, has spurred them on. he is an adult surprised to come in as the top three —— is nadal surprised? let's have a listen.

i was able to keep going, because of my style of game, as a lot of people have said, in my career, it should bea have said, in my career, it should be a little bit shorter. but here we are. i be a little bit shorter. but here we are. lam be a little bit shorter. but here we are. i am happy for that, be a little bit shorter. but here we are. lam happy forthat, even for me it isa are. lam happy forthat, even for me it is a big surprise to be where lam me it is a big surprise to be where iamat me it is a big surprise to be where lam at my me it is a big surprise to be where i am at my age. always good to see rafael nadal on the tennis court. speaking of the tennis court, you have seen a lot of tennis court, you have seen a lot of tennis all over the world. when the weather affects things, how difficult is it for tournament organisers to make sure they get as many games out there as possible? well, it can be, certainly, if you don't have the luxury of covered courts, which obviously at the
1:51 am
australian open you have got three of the show courts or covered by a roof. so you don't tend to get a backlog of matches that you would do, say, at wimbledon, which we know has only really had one roof over centre court. and obviously here five matches played on those show courts every day. so you don't quite get the backlog. obviously yesterday was an unusual day, it is fair to say. i don't think we expected to see rain quite like that. 96 matches will have to be played to a conclusion today as a result of that hangover from the weather yesterday. but it won't cause huge problems, and speaking to the tournament organisers here today, they were saying they are not expecting rain quite as badly as we saw yesterday. possibly a few showers, but they will clear through those matches, they are confident in that, and there shouldn't be any major delays to the schedule as we had deeper into this first week. i will leave you now with those lovely eucalyptus trees in the background, i am not jealous at all. there are 1a games in the nba on monday, including the toronto raptors. as the league shows its appreciation for martin luther king its appreciation for martin luther kinng. day, its appreciation for martin luther king jr. day, tres young its appreciation for martin luther kinng. day, tres young celebrated his own game with 42 points and 15 assists for atla nta, his own game with 42 points and 15 assists for atlanta, but the hawks

couldn't contain the canadian side, and with possession given away, the ra ptors and with possession given away, the ra pto rs we nt and with possession given away, the raptors went on to win their fourth game ina raptors went on to win their fourth game in a row. in italy's serie, atla nta game in a row. in italy's serie, atlanta were dealt a blow. this clever little flick putting them in control of the game. after the break, the visitors striking back. the equaliser came from former —— a former atlanta player. to cricket now, and england have taken a 2—1 series lead after an innings—and—53—run victory over south africa in the third test. a last—wicket stand of 99 in port elizabeth delayed the inevitable for the hosts, with a joe root over conceding 28 runs that equalled the record for the most expensive over in test history. the england captain failed to get his first five—wicket haul in the longerformat, but his side will win the series if they avoid defeat in the fourth test in johannesburg, which begins on friday.

i think there was a lot of good stuff that came from that first game. we were dealt a very difficult hand going into it and during it, with a lot of illness and injury. it has bound us quite tight as a group. i really believe that, in the way we played in cape town filled the group with confidence, gave a lot of belief that we are more than capable of winning out here, and we backed it up comprehensively here in port elizabeth. so going tojoe berg, we will be full of confidence. we will be absolutely ready to turn it on again and make sure that we adapt to that surface, because it will be very different to hear —— jo—burg. confidence is a big thing in our batting line—up. we need to get confidence back in time in the middle and runs on the board. and there is no doubt in my mind that it will come eventually. it isjust that at the same time that quite a few of us that are in the same boat. and we don't have one or two guys standing up saying i am going to
1:54 am
score 100, i am going to score 150, or even 200. then guys who are a little bit out of form, a little bit low on confidence, conflict under the radar a little bit, and then almost when they play at the turn, they can start jumping almost when they play at the turn, they can startjumping back almost when they play at the turn, they can start jumping back on. almost when they play at the turn, they can startjumping back on. at they can startjumping back on. at the moment there's quite a few of us that are underperforming, and that's a fact. staying with cricket, and in harare, sri lanka will resume on day three of the first test against zimbabwe on 42/1, still trailing the home side by 316 runs. zimbabwe were dismissed for 358 just after the tea break, after craig ervine top—scored with 85. lasith embuldeniya the pick of the sri lankan bowlers, with figures of 5/114. sri lanka lost the wicket of oshada fernando for 21 before bad light stopped play. in the nhl, colorado avalanche made it three wins in a row as they eased past the detroit red wings. despite falling behind early, the avalanche we re falling behind early, the avalanche were helped to a 3—1 lead, while the red wings have considered 25 goals

in the past five games. when nathan mackinnon collected his second late on, it signalled another defeat for the side from detroit. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. but, from me and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello. monday brought some beautiful winter sunshine to large swathes of the uk. unfortunately, the prospects for the rest of this week are distinctly dull for one reason or another, be it a lot of low cloud lurking about, orfor this morning, some pretty stubborn fog. the high pressure that's keeping things dry is going to be staying
1:56 am
with us, but it's just going to reorientate itself a little through the next few days, eventually shifting away south—westwards and pulling in more moisture from the atlantic. that's what's going to help to thicken our cloud. for this morning, the densest of fog likely to be an issue, i think, across the southern counties of england and into south wales. a lot of our major motorways, of course, in this area. please do bear in mind when you take to the roads that the fog could be patchy, so you could be in it one minute, out of it the next, then back in, and that is particularly dangerous. and tuesday, as promised, a pretty grey affair. best of any breaks probably to the lee of higher ground, east of the pennines, sheltered spots to the east of scotland. further west, some rain actually for argyll and bute. topsy—turvy temperatures, actually, our mildest weather to the north of the uk, with that atlantic feed to the north of the high. to the south, just six or seven, colder if you get stuck by the fog that lingers. overnight tuesday into wednesday,
1:57 am
plenty of cloud across the uk, plenty of moisture, generally very murky, and because of all that cloud around, our temperatures will be held up. so frost limited possibly to a few pockets across southernmost counties of england for first thing on wednesday. and you can see the high here, as promised, sitting a little bit further south—westwards. and i've put the colour on behind me here to show you the air mass, to show you the atlantic air tipping over the top of the high and spilling its way south into england and wales for wednesday. things on the ground not looking too different, unfortunately. how many ways can you say cloudy and grey? best of any breaks in the east. but the temperatures do just nudge up a little, about 10—12 degrees typically across the uk, certainly the biggest increase to the south. and for the rest of the week, same old, same old. the high still with us, always slightly milder to the north, a little cooler to the south. some signs of more rainfall perhaps across scotland for a time, as a front works its way in. but, by the end of the week, the high really does start to break down, and then friday into saturday,
