hello, this is sport today live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: day three of the australian open championships where we have seen the rainy and champion of the women's singles, naomi osaka, booka rainy and champion of the women's singles, naomi osaka, book a place in the next round. arsenal get a late equaliser at chelsea to stay in the top half of the premier league. and sergio aguero does it again as he comes on as a sub to score the winner at sheffield united this. hello and welcome to the programme where we're heading straight today three of the australian open, will currently well under way in melbourne.

naomi osaka, has she gone through to the third round 7 naomi osaka, has she gone through to the third round? she breezed through and it is easy here as well on day three. and that causes a few issues for some players on court at the moment. no issues for a naomi osaka because she is comfortable this year. remember she won the title last year and found it because to replicate that performance she is so much more relaxed and comfortable this year and it was so easy for her as she came through in straight set. we have two reigning grand slam champions out on court at the moment, patrick vetiver is an action as well, —— petra kvitova. and then we will be seeing the world number one and big hope for australia at this home grand slam, ash barty. she

will be second at rod lever. talk about not feeling the pressure but she is very aware of the pressure and expectation that she shoulders at the tournament this year when you consider the bushfires in the smoke in the way that has dominated the conversation and we have seen aces for relief in the various fundraising effort‘s from the players. she is only too aware of how significant it would be if she could go on and reach the final. we will be seeing her on rod laver arena. the women's draw always seems to be so much more open. if we look at the men, roger federer won in 2004 and since then the big three, fedorov, rafael nadal and novak djokovic have won every year except 2005 and 2014. do you see any other difference this year beside one of those big three winning? be honest.
1:48 am
if you're going look at players, i guess maybe tsitsipas, he had a great run last year. medvedev is the big—name people are looking out for when you consider he pushed rafael nadal close in the us open. i think they will be the players you look towards. but when novak djokovic arrived here in australia he seems to play his best tennis and it will be hard to look be on those three once again this year. at 38, roger federer, perhaps, people were wondering if he was suffering because of the lack of tennis. i did not play much in the atp. novak djokovic as well, he has been brilliant and won the atp cup with serbia playing some brilliant tennis. it could be a record extending eighth australian open

title this year. let's hear from roger federer on how he is shaping up roger federer on how he is shaping up this year. for me, the first three rounds are key to get going and get used to the pressure, stay calm and to save break point or whatever it may be. the unknown, that can be scary at times. be careful, round by round, that sort of mentality. everyone is playing well at the moment so it is important to stay on top of things. unbelievable, isn't it, top seeds at the tournament 15 years after they played their first grand slam. and if anyone is going to arrest that dominance well, look at those names. wuhan, medvedev or tsitsipas.

dominance well, look at those names. wuhan, medvedev ortsitsipas. . —— thiem, tsitsipas or medvedev. now to the premier league where hector bellerin‘s late goal gave 10 man arsenal a 2—2 draw against chelsea. less than half an hour in, former blue david luiz was handed a straight red card on his return to stamford bridge for bringing down tammy abraham, and after chelsea looked to have it won when they went 2—1 up — the spaniard saw his deflected shot hand the gunners a point. i'm very proud, the manager was happy with how we responded because coming back into a draw from twice in the same game is very difficult and it is a credit to the whole team. with football it is a fine line and to get the results, to get to where you want to be, if you don't score enough calls and you don't score enough calls and you don't win enough games. —— enough goals. sergio aguero's seventh goal in four games was enough for pep guardiola's manchester city to beat sheffield united.

gabrieljesus missed a first half penalty and it was his replacement, the argentine aguero who scored the winner inside the last 20 minutes. the results, we knew it we could see a couple of clear chances, more than that, the penalty was saved, the keeper saved two incredible interactions. but a good victory for us interactions. but a good victory for us to secure a place in the champions league this season. elsewhere, southampton have moved into the top of the half of the table for the first time this season after a 2—0 win at crystal palace, aston villa scored a late winner at home to watford meaning the hornets slip back into the bottom three. and that's because bournemouth won for the first time since the 2nd of november as they put three past brighton, while the drama continued because newcastle united somehow managed to score two stoppage time goals at everton to sneak a 2—2 draw.
1:52 am
we have to stay on the game until the last second and, honestly, i have nothing to say to my players. they did really well all the time, all the time. carlo ancelotti used to be in charge of napoli until last month but there was more joy for his old team in naples. as a lorenzo insigne goal after two minutes took them into the semi—finals of the coppa italia after they accounted for lazio. each side had a player sent off in the first half but it's gennaro gatuso's side who advance to the last four. to spain and in the copa del rey. sevilla beat levante 3—1 as they move through to the last 16. osasuna are also through despite being taken to extra time by third tier recreativo huelva while real zaragoza of the second tier were 3—1winners over top flight mallorca. either cameroon or the ivory coast will miss out on the world cup after the teams were drawn against each

other. that is the biggest of the ties were only ten group winners will progress to the final play—off round stop to leg ties will decide the five world cup representatives. it is such a tough qualification process from africa. you have a group stage and only the winners go through to a play—off round so the world cup in qatar seems a long way away and even at this group stage we can see some big names are going to miss out. cameroon and ivory coast are in the same group. this cameron has been to the world cup seven times, ivory coast has many talented players. ghana and south africa are in the same group as well. dana missed out last time and they will be desperate to get to that tournament in 2022. south africa have not been since 2010 but they area big have not been since 2010 but they are a big football nation. many have groups with many teams are qualified for the last african cup of nations, the best of example is the group containing uganda mali and kenya. it

is so competitive and even at this group stage there is no room for error. sri lanka will resume their opening innings of the first test against zimbabwe in harare on 295 for 4 when day 4 gets under way on wednesday. it's been slow going but they trail by just 63 runs with angelo mathews just eight runs short of a century with the two test series the first at home for zimbabwe since 2017 and their first of any kind for more than a year. a longtime new york yankees then came within a whisker of making the hall of famer. i wonder who did not vote for him? he became the face of baseball and was named the american league rookie of the year in 1996 as the yankees won the world series for the yankees won the world series for the first time since 1978. he then led new york to three straight titles from 1998— 2000 and he finished with 3465 hits this here

was his 3000th. he also added 260 home runs. he quite some player. for the latest on the australian open, day three happening right now, head to the website for details. from me and the team, that is all for now. we started this week on a settled note with a bit of sunshine around, thanks to high pressure. but high pressure is with us again on wednesday. a subtle change where we begin to import some slightly less cold air from the atlantic and you will see that on the air mass charts here throughout wednesday. you can see those yellow and orange colours across the uk. so today will be mainly dry but rather cloudy because we are picking up more
1:56 am
moisture off the atlantic and many of us will start cloudy and it looks like the skies will be led on through the day. best of any bright sunny spells tend to be eastern scotland here, sheltered from the south—west and the odd bright spell further south. the wind will remain light so nothing to stir up the hour. it will be milder with temperatures in double figures for most, very mild in fact across the north—east of scotland given good spells of sunshine. and as we had through wednesday evening and overnight it stays cloudy with light wind, murky as well and if you get the odd hole in the cloud it could turn chilly for most but because of the cloud cover it will be a frost free night. through thursday and friday, similar days with high pressure sticking around, light wind and it will have a grey leaden with limited spells of sunshine. temperatures between seven and 11 degrees. significant changes
1:57 am
into the weekend, high pressure varies near the continent and low pressure starts to portion of the atlantic could still be fairly cloudy across the board on saturday morning but as the breeze continues to pick up from the south—west it would be quite windy in the north—west and we will see some holes appearing in the cloud. a couple of showers around this wet front will bring outbreaks of rain to western scotland and northern ireland. that weather front spreads across the uk during saturday night and into sunday, a weak feature by the time it reaches the eastern side of the country, and no more than a band of cloud with a few showery bursts of rain. once that clears it will be brighter for many with good spells of sunshine, quite blustery and this is a cool air masses well. about to be quite cold across the north and west of scotland and northern ireland here so the showers will fall, wintry and snow across the hills, nine or 10 degrees
1:58 am
in the south—east. into the start of the following week it will turn more unsettled and a deeper area of low pressure could could bring strong wind and spells of rain.
