now, though, it's time for the film review. hello, and welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. so, mark, what do we have this week? a bidding mix bag, we have a beautiful day in the neighborhood, which is a very strange film starring tom hanks. we have richard joel starring tom hanks. we have richard joel, directed by clint eastwood. and at the rhythm section, uneven thriller with blake lively. so, a beautiful day in the neighborhood, you have seen it? i am already injured because you said it was unusual, it's kind of interesting. it isa unusual, it's kind of interesting. it is a study which centres around a legendary figure in america, fred rogers, everybody in america knows him, he is a symbol of everything good and honest and wholesome and terrific. i have to say, before i
5:49 pm
saw the film, i knew nothing about him at all. in the film, we see him doing a kid show, kind of a cross between sesame street and a session with a psychiatrist. that is a donor was played by matthew rees, called lloyd vogel, someone who is known for taking a scalpel to their subjects, after he has written about somebody, they don't want to talk to him again. they sent him to do a profile piece on fred rogers as a serious on pcs on american hero. he goes to meet fred rogers and cannot figure it out but that he is for real or whether it a fake. here's a clip. and, action. do you know what this is? it's lloyd... lloyd. hold, please. we can't fire him, can we?
5:50 pm
hello, lloyd. oh, it's nice to meet you. are you all right? play at the plate. oh, that looks like it hurts. let's chat afterwards. we need to keep moving. maybe we could have evan been take a look at him? no, i'm good, i'm good. sorry, fred, just need to... all right, all right. it's wonderful to meet you, so glad you're here, lloyd, i'm looking forward to talking with you, i truly am. after this. everyone, this is lloyd vogel, he is a wonderful writer. that performance is so strange, the first time you make the character, i couldn't get a handle on him at all, exactly as the donor list is. then during their conversations, every time lloyd asks about fred, he kind of turns around to it about being lied. this was based by a journalist
5:51 pm
who did say that after meeting fred rogers, his worldview did change, he started to try and see the good in things. in the case of this, they had fictionalised and over dramatise the story of lloyd vogel, he is in the story of lloyd vogel, he is in the middle of abo, personal crisis. through his meeting with fred, he does come to change, in a much more dramatically than actually happen in real life. the kernel of truth is there, some deal with a negative view of the world make this figure who seems like nobody could be that nice, nobody could be that positive, and somehow couldn't discover a chink in their armour. i have to say, it is hard, no, impossible, to think ofan say, it is hard, no, impossible, to think of an actor other than tom hanks who could have pulled that character. what did you think of it? i spent a lot of time thinking, does it just crossed i spent a lot of time thinking, does itjust crossed the line of small push? i decided theyjust kept it back, they just managed
5:52 pm
push? i decided theyjust kept it back, theyjust managed it, ithink that his because we all kind of love tom hanks, you cut him so much light. also, when you first meet him, if you don't know the character, he is kind of creepy. the way that everything is, hello, boyd, how are you? i think the film is really interesting and really strange and i like the strangeness of it very much. richard joel, a fellow which cathy bates has got a best supporting actress nomination. based on a real—life story based on a security guard who spotted a suspect package at olympic park in 1996, he alerted the authorities and subsequently became the subject of the fbi‘s investigations as he was somebody who really wanted to be a law enforcement officer. somehow, he fitted the profile who shot at somebody who might have done something to draw attention to himself and stop this got out to the press, he was treated appallingly by
5:53 pm
the press. terrific performances, cathy bates as the mother who sees the media closing in on him. it is a solitary story, about what happens when somebody is thrust completely u njustly when somebody is thrust completely unjustly into the spotlight. it is a shame, therefore, that the figure of the central journalist who shame, therefore, that the figure of the centraljournalist who breaks the centraljournalist who breaks the story is itself guilty of some really crass, sexist stereotyping, which is to do with the film itself wanting to say, look how badly media art. but actually falls into some vilification of her character which is unwarranted and unfair. although clint eastwood knows how to do simple stroke dramas, he is very good at no fuss, you look at his best stuff, it is just a shame that mac as i say, a story about the misrepresentation of somebody in at the public, it is a shame that it falls into self with the
5:54 pm
representation of a journalist. and the rhythm section? blake lively loses her family and the rhythm section? blake lively loses herfamily and an air accident, she discovers it is not an accident, she discovers it is not an accident, it was an assassination. she resolves to find the killer, in order to do it, she has to find it jude law, somebody who has specialist experience, and is not pleased to see her. here is a club. who else knows you're here? i can't hear you. no... no one... no one knows but me. why did you come here then? i'm going to kill reza. oh, god...he must be terrified. help me find him. you want to kill mohammed reza? you need to hire a professional. i don't have any money. oh, well, you have a job. you're a prostitute, aren't you?
5:55 pm
so, some talent there, good talent in front of the camera, behind also, reed morano. the problem with it is that it wants to be a serious character study, on the other hand, it wants to be a james bond style action adventure, which is maybe like a rerun of look—up is on's nikki ta, a somebody shot something like atomic blind. no you never invest in at the characters, you never believing in them. despite some crunchy fight sequences, them. despite some crunchy fight sequences, a well orchestrated car chase, but at no point did i think that anyone in at the film was doing anything other than acting the role of being in on the film. it is a real indication of the film does not make sense on its own terms, you don't watch it, you look at it. you just see it pass by but you never get involved in it, i was never
5:56 pm
involved. it is a shame because there are lots of tell the people involved in it, i think the project itself is very flawed. a lot of talent in the best out and worst. your best, david copperfield, and manual unit she has done a wonderful job. dev patel at the centre of a wonderful cast. everybody is cast because they are the right person for the bill, because they bring the right skill to the role, extraordinary ensemble cast. it's funny and uplifting. it looks wonderful, i think. it looks funny and uplifting. it looks wonderful, ithink. it looks great. at times, there is a lot of uncertainty, it is a film that celebrates community the best in people, suggesting it is possible for you to come together and resolve the differences. how timely that be? dvd for anybody who wants to stay in
5:57 pm
this weekend? finally, downton abbey, i never seen the tv show, i didn't need to. you see the movie, you go, that is exactly what downton abbey is like. a friend of mine wrote a review that said, it goes down well with a cup of tea, that is downton abbey. that is perfect for dvd, isn't it? exactly, nothing to fetch up the horses at all and you get maggie smith. and interestingly, a curious one. see you next week, bye— bye. we come to the end ofjanuary, we come to the end of january, what a man's month it has been. we continue on that note into february.
5:58 pm

two cases of coronavirus are confirmed in the uk — the pair, from the same family, are being treated at a specialist centre in newcastle. it comes as over 100 people, evacuated from china, were flown back to the uk to be put into quarantine for 1h days. they were taken from a military base in oxfordshire to a hospital on the wirral, where they'll be closely monitored. if they develop symptoms, at that point, the nhs — which, as i say, is very practised at this — will be able to deal with those. we'll be live with our correspondents in newcastle and on the wirral with all the latest. and our other major story this evening: after a union of 47 years, a historic moment as tonight, at 11pm, the uk formally leaves the european union.
