hello. as you pointed out, a dangerous storm is on its way, storm ciara. what's unusual is that the storm is going to affect virtually all parts of the uk. heat it is steaming in, bringing some heavy rain around. the amber warning is for severe gales across england and wales, but that may well be extended. damage and disruption anticipated and you can see the strength of the winds anticipated through tomorrow or virtually everywhere, in excess of 60 miles an hour but up to 80 miles an hour in some parts, very unusual indeed. we've also got the slow—moving band of rain to contained with through the night and there is an amber warning from the met office for the borders of scotland, specifically for river flooding which could happen very quickly so flash
7:31 pm
flooding also a concern. those gusts of wind could course roof tiles and branches and trees to come down so there is a real risk of injury, even damage as well to life, potentially with those sort of winds, it looks nasty indeed. large winds, tides and potential power cuts. if you have plans, all the details on the warnings are on the website. hello, this is bbc news. the headlines: 20 people are reported to have been shot dead and several others wounded in a mass shooting in north east thailand. jakraphanth thomma is a junior army officer, who killed his commanding

7:33 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday, with me katie shanahan and katherine downes. the headlines this evening.... england take the honours in edinburgh — heavy rain, high winds — a battle against the elements in the calcutta cup. grand slam hopes still aflame for fired—up ireland — a six nations win for them, over wales. while in the premier league — the evertonian revival continues under carlo ancelotti. they're up to seventh. also coming up in the programme... great britain are out of the fed cup — their comeback cut short by slovakia. and from chip—shop to champion, tonight terri harper fights for her place in british boxing history. thank you forjoining us once again. it's rugby's oldest rivalry — but the england and scotland had to battle the weather
7:34 pm
as well as each other at murrayfield today. torrential rain and high winds led to a low—scoring game. butjust one try for england was enough for the win. alex gulrajani reports: always be prepared and in edinburgh that went for the fans as well as the players. for some things though, you cannot prepare for as 0wen farrell found out. the menacing wind cost ten and england an early three points. move closer and farrell found the spot. batten down the hatches, this was becoming tough on the field and off it. kicking game was pursued too little success. still, some found a reason to smile and when adam hastings drew scotland level, maybe those home fans were finding a reason to. not for long though. last week their captain stuart hogg fumbled one a try was in
7:35 pm
sight. this week he almost gifted england one. downward pressure here, just enough. but it gave england some territory they took full advantage of. ball is down, it is trite. england scored the first try this match. look how it mattered to england. ellis genge with the try that took the game away from scotland. to come here was always going to be tough, respected them with weather like this. the most important thing was our attitude.- the end of the day we are here to win test matches and we have not managed to do that yet. we will go back to the drawing board on monday morning and be ready for a couple of weeks' time. after two years in scotla nd weeks' time. after two years in scotland the calcutta cup comes back south of the border as england's championship hopes to keep list. ——
7:36 pm
ta ke championship hopes to keep list. —— take a boost. earlier, ireland sent out a strong message — beating the reigning champions, wales by 2a points to m. its a first defeat in nine six nations game for wales — ending their hopes of back to back grand slams. with all the details here's austin halewood. what a statement of intent was for ireland and the new head coach, a resounding win over the defending champions wales here at the aviva stadium in dublin. last weekend against scotland it was all about that first victory for farrell but today was a much more clinical performance, they were much better with ball in hand going forward, much stronger defensively. last season for irish rugby it was a disappointing one, they left the world cup earlier than they would have liked. what farrell has brought into the camp, it shows it is working. as for the welsh head coach wayne pivac, it is back to the drawing board. they will not be happy with conceding four tries.
7:37 pm
michael radford watched the action. as fans waited for the storm to arrive in dublin, all eyes were on events inside the stadium with ireland and wales both aiming to become the force of this year's championship. after both teams won in the first round of fixtures, this was always going to be a tough affair. 90 minutes had passed before the first score, courtesy of jordan larmour. wales weathered the irish storm and soon responded. tomos williams with a sixth try for his country. the celebrations were cut short, a simple mistake giving possession back to ireland who took full advantage. tadhg furlong, too strong, too powerful, two tries for the home side. it was a sign of things to come. wales, unable to cope with ireland's force, josh van der flier extending their lead. it was quickly reduced thanks to hadleigh parkes, but replays showed he hadn't grounded the ball, the try was disallowed. nothing wrong with the next score from andrew conway.
7:38 pm
it was and's fourth try. bonus points secured, victory secured. even a late try byjustin tipuric could not dampen ireland's spirits. 24-14, the 24—14, the final score. i am proud, i always proud of them. i am glad we could play better today, and get over the lines. just another win, that is what matters in this competition. second half we felt we started 0k, had that try been given, it would have been better. second half started 0k, we had that try. i think the drive at the end was a little too late. defeat means wales's grand slam dreams are over, but not for ireland. maybe the winds of change are coming to dublin after all. michael redford. there really was a sense of excitement here in the stadium this afternoon as the match was going on. irish rugby fans feel like something special might be coming around the corner. as for wales, their hopes of back—to—back grand slams in the six nations are over this season. this was the first big test under
7:39 pm
head coach wayne pivac, it did not go to plan. he will have lots to ponder as the six nations take a break over the weekend before wales head back to cardiff to host france and ireland head across the water to twickenham where they take on england, and andy farrell will be plotting the downfall of his son owen. just two premier league games today as we enter the first winter break in top flight history. everton beat crystal palace 3—1 at goodison park to their resurgance under carlo ancelotti. since the italian took charge in december only liverpool have won more points in the league than everton, while palace edge closer to the relegation zone. lydia campbell reports. when carlo ancelotti took over everton, they were battling against relegation. just two months on they are targeting a european spot. they lostjust once in the league in ten games and had the lead in this one thanks to some brilliance from bernard in an otherwise poor first half. before today christian benteke had
7:40 pm
not scored since last april so you can imagine his relief when he pulled palace level. he might have to thank jordan pickford for this one later. palace‘s reprieve lasted less than eight minutes with richarlison finishing off his own run to restore the lead. they added another with just minutes remaining. dominic calvert—lewin tapping in to make the points safe. the aim for everton must surely now be europe but for palace, they face an uncomfortable winter break looking over their shoulders. honestly, i have to be happy. they run we had in these 40 days, when i arrived here. the players, the club, everyone did fantastic work, the season is not finished yet. we have a possibility to play for the europa league which is our target for the next games.
7:41 pm
positives are hard to find when you lose a game because football is about winning and losing and every time you lose, the result colours any sort of judgment. it is very, very difficult to see the game as clear as you would like because your judgment is coloured by the fact you have lost. in the late premier league game, it finished one—all between brighton and watford. watford took the lead midway through the first half, thanks to this amazing strike from abdoulaye doucoure. but brighton equalised with 15 minutes to go — adrian mariappa putting it in his own net. watford remain in the bottom three. brighton stay 15th. in the championship, nottingham forest have moved to within one point of the automatic promotion places. they beat fellow promotion rivals leeds 2—0 at the city ground — sammi ameobi putting the home side ahead. and they sealed the win late on,

of the match due to illness. and that meant that harriet dart needed to beat anna scmiedlova — she lost the first set on a tie—break and saved 2 match points in the second, but went long with a backhand — so slovakia are through to the inaugralfinals in budapest, for gb its back to a qualifier for next year's competition. disappointment for the british team. great britain's hopes of qualifying a women's basketball team for this summer's olympic games look to be over, after they lost to south korea in serbia.. victory for britain would have secured them a place in, but they lost by 82 points to 79. our olympic sports reporter, nick hope is in belgrade... great britain against south korea was dubbed a must—win even by the players themselves, and although they are not completely out of contention for a place in tokyo 2020, this defeat means a big opportunity has been missed. the british women have only ever competed at one olympics, london 2012 where they were gifted

a place as the host nation. jo was one of the current squad who competed at those games, but despite their efforts they found themselves 16 points down as the koreans took control. gb winning would have given them a ticket to the olympics and they almost completed an incredible comeback in the closing five minutes but korea took it 82—79. iam i am disappointed. we only played with urgency with five minutes left, we started to make a comeback. we started to believe we could win. we ran out of time and i think we made crucial errors in the last minute. you cannot play like that, we are playing for an olympic ticket, we are not playing at the ymca. everyone is fighting, you have to play with urgency from the start, not in the last five minutes when you realise minutes when you realise it's almost over. we left it a bit late, we started playing defence in the last quarter. a big deficit to come back from.
7:47 pm
we have to learn, we have another chance tomorrow. we have to learn from our mistakes and come back fighting tomorrow. great britain will face the world number three side spain in the qualifying round on sunday. the spanish need to win themselves to book a place in the olympics. the british women will fight to the end, they have had to do so for yea rs end, they have had to do so for years due to the limited funding they have been given. realistically, gb‘s best chance of qualifying for the game has probably passed. it's been jump racing's ‘super saturday‘ at newbury today, featuring some of the final warm—up races ahead of next month's cheltenham festival. one of the star names on show was altior — the 3—1 on favourite, ridden by nico de boinville won the game spirit chase. he saw his 19 race winning run come to an end in at ascot in november. but certainly impressed out there today. the 2018 cheltenham gold cup winner, native river was also in the winner's circle after taking the denman chase for the third time. jonjo o'neilljunior was on board the 5—2 on winner. great britain's men and women
7:48 pm
have been back in action today in hockey's pro league. the women recorded their first win of the competition after beating new zealand 3—nil in auckland. gold medallist, shona mccallin scoring the third for the olympic champions. that's her first goal in gb colours. look what it means to her. the men meanwhile could only manage a one—all draw with new zealand, despite this late equaliser from chris griffiths. anything less than specacular will not be good enough — that's according to boxer kell brook — who's back in the ring for the first time in over a year tonight. he fights the american mark de luca in sheffield. the former world champion fights mark de luca in sheffield — and he's back with his old coach dom ingle, from whom he split in 2 years ago. so why has he gone back? rob stayton went to find out. ijust walked in like i walk in my own front door. kell brook is back,
7:49 pm
in the ring, in the spotlight and in sheffield's famous ingle gym. in 2018 he left, seemingly to never return. the former world champion said there was no fallout with trainer dominic ingle, it wasjust like was no fallout with trainer dominic ingle, it was just like old times. he spent a lot of time with me and his sons spent a lot of time with me. what do you think, the last person who left under a cloud of dust was naseem hamed, he was not allowed back in the gym. there wasn't an issue with us. we are still friends with a sense of how we worked over the years. if it doesn't work out, come back. he has been a big part of my life for years. the journey, he is probably one of my first world champions. you have to bear that in the back of your mind. there could never be a fallout. brooke says the final chapter of his career starts when he takes on the american mark de luca. if he is beaten in this one, he promised to announce his retirement in the ring. it is about yourself. i don't need to fight again, i have got enough money to retire and sail into the sunset.
7:50 pm
i don't need to get up at six in the morning and run, i don't need to but i do it because i am driven and i want to be the best and i have more to give. i have been in this position a lot of times with other fighters like naseem hamed. there comes an end, the transition from being that boxer into normal life, you need an escape route and something to do, otherwise you are not going to last long outside boxing. find other interests. i think it is finally clicking with kell brook. i think she wants to walk away from the sport with everything in tact, he his money, credibility and go on and enjoy the rest of his life. he has devoted his life to boxing for the last 24 years, it is a lot of time. it is a quarter of a century and we are here to make sure he finishes his career in the best place possible. he will enter the ring for the first time in over a year on saturday. he is hoping his strong performance could lead to another world title
7:51 pm
shot and provide the proof that his return to the ingle gym was the right call. it's also a big night ahead for the female boxer, terri harper, who will fight on kell brook's undercard. she has the chance to become the wbc super—featherweight champion. but she'll need to beat the experienced eva walstrom, in sheffield and this will only be harper's 10th pro fight. if she wins she'll go down in history as a british world champion alongside the likes of jane couch and nicola adams. tanya arnold has the story. terri harper has taken her seat at the top table of boxing just two years into her professional career. monday morning, that's when i wake up and think my life has changed, i used to have tojuggle uni and my work, i worked in a chip shop and now i am in the gym, boxing full—time. for her and her partnerjen it has meant they can plan for the future. next month they move into a new house. it has set me up financially, i can say i'm financially stable through boxing, which many people don't think it can happen forfemales but here i am,
7:52 pm
showing it can be done. to be part of what terri is doing, as a partner, isjust amazing. she is going onwards and upwards and i believe one day she will be the new katie taylor. what are you like watching her? the first fight i watched her, i did not eat all day, i did not sleep, i was a nervous wreck, shaking. when the bell rang and i saw her fight, i wasjust so relaxed. doesn't bother me now, i know what potential she has, and how good she is. she gets in that ring and does the job. saturday night is a big step up for terri, eva walstrom has held the title since 2015 whilst terri has had just nine professionalfights. people like underdog stories, normal people who have gone on and achieved against odds and terri harper has done that. if she does it on saturday,
7:53 pm
she becomes a real star. i don't know if she is ready for that, she is as quiet as a mouse. if she becomes the wbc champion, her life will change forever. i can't go into this fight with anything other than confidence. seeing how much i have improved in just the short two years and after every fight i can see improvement. i know stepping into that ring eva has not got anything i have not come across before. jen admits she will be screaming and shouting in the front row on saturday night and on sunday they will have the christmas dinner terri missed out on while she was preparing for the fight. i bet she is feeling super nervous right now. tanya arnold reporting there. if you play golf, you'll know that a few hours on the course can be a great way to relieve stress — as long as you're getting the rub of the green. now a special project at the home of golf — st andrews — is helping former soldiers to benefit from that peace and fresh air by training them up as caddies. louise cowey reports.
7:54 pm
mentally, pretty much never been the same since i came back. upset, angry, pretty much nonstop, my mind racing all the time. certain sounds will make you remember stuff you have seen, and smells give you memories you do not want to remember. john pitts is a former soldier who served with the us army in afghanistan. he is one of seven ex—servicemen from around the world undertaking a crash course in caddying in st andrews. let's put you on the driver and i want you to aim to the left of the bunkers out here. 0k. he and the rest of the men are taught under the watchful eye of david gilchrist, twice scottish caddie master of the year. these guys have been through probably the worst atrocities you can ever imagine and we are bringing them here, training them to have a new life. oh, yes. i have struggled since i got
7:55 pm
out of military tour. i have tried a few different things, they have not suited my lifestyle. this is perfect, it is outdoors, it is a nice environment, it is active. it is the second year the school has run. scottie hale took part in 2019 and now has a job. my lowest part was when i was in hospital, i didn't care about myself any more. i thought i was basically finished. the school has picked me up 100%, i couldn't even contemplate that before. just getting on with life again. since last year's school, dozens of british veterans are believed to have taken their own lives, in america, the figure is 20 a day.
7:56 pm
in a bid to reduce that terrible death toll and following on its success in scotland, america will stage its first caddy school for soldiers following the ryder cup later this year. for this newly formed band of brothers, it has already marked a new chapter and a chance to heal their wartime wounds. they get to walk around the stunning links at saint andres. i imagine it is pretty rainy and windy from what we saw at murrayfield today. reminder of our top story — in the six nations england beat scotland 13—6 in terrible wind and rain at murrayfield. and ireland beat the reigning champions, wales by 2a points to 1a in dublin. that's all from sportsday. have a lovely evening. bye for now.
7:57 pm
good evening, as we heard it was wet and windy at murrayfield and the storm has not yet arrived properly, it isa storm has not yet arrived properly, it is a powerful and dangerous storm which is bearing down upon us. here it is. what is unusual is the isobars are very tightly packed widely over the uk, sol isobars are very tightly packed widely over the uk, so i usually it is across the uk. the met office have numerous warnings in force, and bread for severe gales, england and wales but equally very windy for northern ireland and scotland. those wind strengths will cause widespread disruption, damage and a threat to life with flying debris and trees being brought down, potential power lines down as well. it is very wet across parts of scotland, northern ireland, north—western parts of england and wales to the evening and overnight. in southern scotland there is concern for river flooding as those rains give a lot of rain in
7:58 pm
as those rains give a lot of rain in a small space of time. the winds are escalating through the night, the rains are spreading to all parts. it is mild, except in the north of scotla nd is mild, except in the north of scotland where we will have snow over the mountains. that is the only consolation. sunday looks atrocious, some exceptionally windy weather on the way. gusts of wind inland 80 mph, very rarely realised across england and wales but those wind speeds are in the forecast and possible for the day ahead. later in the day we could get a squeeze through the central lowlands of scotland, argyll and bute as the rainfall continues to ease out of the way, we have lots of squally showers to come from scotland and northern ireland. very windy and a truly unpleasant day, quite cold despite it being mild because of the snow in the mountains and the screaming winds. bands of heavy rain with hail and thunder moving through england and wales, squally winds on
7:59 pm
land which could bring down trees, settle m e nt land which could bring down trees, settlement branches, power lines, tiles of the roofs which could cause damage. already we have seen transport disruption but damaging and dangerous wind. large waves because we have high spring tides. looks like a nasty storm. the winds will ease a little into the start of the new week but quite a change, much colder with some wintry showers, perhaps a low midweek but for the meantime, all we are talking about is this powerful and dangerous storm.
8:00 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines at eight o'clock: 20 people are reported to have been shot dead and several others wounded in a mass shooting in north east thailand. the gunman — identified as a soldier who killed his commanding officer before going on the rampage — is believed to be still on the loose. five british people, including a child, have tested positive for the coronavirus at a ski resort in france. gusts of 63 miles per hour already in stornoway and ba cancels dozens of flights tomorrow. there are severe weather warnings as storm ciara approaches from the atlantic. six senior conservatives write to tory mps to raise concerns about the government's decision to allow huawei to help build the uk's 5g network.
