time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. the headlines this evening.... liverpool leave it late but extend their lead at the top of the premier league to 25 points with a 1—0 win over norwich and i'll reflect on a turbulant21i hours for manchester city. banned from europe for two seasons. but what happens next? also coming up in the programme... the race to the premier league takes another twist as cash earns forest a priceless point at west brom muir makes her mark in glasgow but misses out on a world record at the indoor grand prix. and we'll round up the day's rugby union news including leicester's third win of the season as the tigers try to claw their way back up the table.
7:34 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. 25 points. that is the lead that liverpool now have at the top of the premier league table...and it is still february — storm dennis means we can't forget it's still winter. liverpool were playing the team at the bottom of the table, nowrich, the gap between them, 55 points, is the biggest between top and bottom that the premire league has ever seen at this stage. the score was a narrow i—0 but there's an enormous chasm between liverpool and the rest of the premier league. craig templeton reports. this is what it looks like when you just had a mid—season holiday, this is what it looks like when you're 22 months clear —— 22 points clear.
7:35 pm
there are 55 points clear of norwich, but apart from flashes of brilliance from firmino, that was ha rd to brilliance from firmino, that was hard to tell. it was norwich that the best chance of first half. liverpool started to push after the break, but the keeper was in the way not once, but twice, not bad with the national manager watching on. that pressure brought opportunities to counter. so many times this season to counter. so many times this season liverpool have found a way and so often sadio mane has been the reason why. another crucial goal. a touch of holiday rust, but the results and the smiles remain. burnley‘s hopes of qualifying for european football look brighter this evening after they beat southampton 2—1 at st mary's. the result lifts the clarets up to 10th — five points off that fifth europa league spot. rhia chohan reports. . ..
7:36 pm
separated only by goal difference, both teams at st mary's were eyeing up a top half spot in the table. it got off to a bizarre start, barely a couple of minutes and ashley westwood sunk this towards the near post. wherever danny ings thought it was going, over the line was not it. he'd have to hold his hands up for this one, regardless of the conditions. southampton's star player did make amends with his 15th goal of the season. the saints seem to be doing a betterjob of mastering the weather in the first half, but it was all in vain. burnley substitute delivering the biggest blow, ending his goal drought of over 500 days. a moment of magic from the czech, giving those who brave the elements all the way to the south coast something to celebrate. there were moments that could have kept them in it. but the second half got away.
7:37 pm
we tried to stick to the game plan and make the equaliser, it was ok but in the end not good enough. the second half, because not aggressive enough and we didn't find the right solutions for being under pressure. really tough game, we had to dig in again like we do. we forced a result today. from big moments when we needed them. it is very difficult winning premier league games away from home. we have done enough today in the fashion of tactical understanding and defensive understanding to take all three points. so a move to tenth place in the table for burnley and a boost to their hopes of playing in european competition again. manchester city have made the front and the back pages on saturday without even kicking a ball. it's all about the fallout from their two year european football ban for breaking financial fair play rules. ben has more details on it. karthi — this is one of the biggest football stories in europe —
7:38 pm
for a while. if you haven't been following — let's bring you right up to speed with how they came to be banned from the champions league for the next two seasons.... in november 2018, a german newspaper published leaked documents alleging city had broken financial rules — and uefa began an investigation. last may, city were referred to uefa's financial watchdog for investigation. in november, city failed in a bid to halt the investigation.and yesterday, as we know, city were banned from european club competition for the next two seasons, and fined 25—million pounds. as soon as the verdict from uefa was announced — city issued a swift and strong response. they said they were disappointed but not surprised with the decision and said the investigator had already decided the result of the case before it was even investigated. the subsequent flawed and consistently leaked uefa process he oversaw has meant
7:39 pm
that there was little doubt in the result that he would deliver. they called the process predjudicial and will seek an impartialjudgment as quickly as possible and will look to appeal to the court of arbitration for sport. city have broken financial rules. but what exactly have they done wrong? well, it all relates to sponsorship — mainly to do with the etihad stadium — with close links between the company and city's owners in the middle east. have they been totally honest or have they inflated the value of sponsorship deals to get around the rules? kieran maguire is a price of football expert. if you take a look at manchester city's commercial income, where i think the accusations have been made, that's increased from £65 million in 2011 to £218 million by by 2017, uefa are claiming that the the deal struck by manchester city
7:40 pm
were artificial amounts and therefore it gave them a financial advantage. so what does this all mean on the pitch? in the future — can they keep hold of their best players now they're not in europe? de bruyne, aguero, ederson — and what about their rising young stars like phil foden? question marks aplenty about manager pep guardiola even before this verdict came out. what motivation do they now have? the premier league's out of reach — even if they win the champions league for the first time — it won't matter... it wouldn't make me want to run for the exit, it would make me very frustrated —— it would make me want to run for the exit. it would make me disappointed with the outcome of the decision. but i think you look at some of those young players at manchester city, i think they will be determined to try and win this competition. with manchester city. very fascinating to see if they can win the champions league this season. is this shaking up the order of english and european football?
7:41 pm
and what about their future recruitment? you hear of players not wanting to join manchester united or arsenal because they're not playing champions league football. would city now be the same? has the brand been tarnished? the biggest problem, manchester city have is the bad name. once you become a bad name in football, a lot of players don't want to join that bad name. they want a healthy club, a club who's trying to do things the right way and that's something that manchester city will have to deal with. and more questions still — consider their premier league status. just like saracens broke financial rules in rugby‘s premiership — could city be found guility of breaking premier league as well as uefa rules? they work off pretty similar principles so question marks are now being raised as to the validity of city's recent title win. so is the premier league likely to swing the axe in city's direction too? here's simon stone... there is an argument for saying of the premier league don't do that,
7:42 pm
they are not acting properly in terms of the governance of the game. there is an other argument to say that they should wait to see what happens with the uefa investigation, to see whether cas reach a different verdict, because the chances are if the premier league brought their own investigation and the uefa one was thrown out by cas or change by cas, that might happen to the premier league as well. these are very interesting discussions that have got to happen within the premier league, and it is certainly a subject that premier league chairmen have been discussing privately over the last few weeks. and just lastly — let's talk money. £25million fine is not to be sniffed at — but a club of city's size should be able to deal with it. the big cost is not playing in the champions league last season — liverpool won around £100 million for winning the champions league. our sports editor dan roan tells us that city earned around £86 million when factoring gate receipts and sponsorship bonuses — and they only made
7:43 pm
the quarterfinals. so, in total — city could lose up to 300 million pounds if taking into account potential club world cup runs and wider global pr too. incomprehensible sums of money really. we started talking about the premier league and how much of a gap is there, it is a complete opposite in there, it is a complete opposite in the championship. west bromwich albion missed their chance to extend their lead in the championship this afternoon. they were held to a 2—2 draw by fellow promotion rivals nottingham forest. michael redford reports. if you are going to light up the championship, you have to cope with tough conditions. west brom have been the best that the season and are closing in on a return to the premier league after two seasons away. forest have been away for two decades, but have been flying high this campaign, thanks largely to their
7:44 pm
defensive resolve. that was nowhere to be seen as january loan signing callum robinson scored his first goalfor west brom. the home side do normally concede, they did so eight minutes later, kyle ba rtley unable to defend this cross. west brom learned from the error. forest didn't. west brom back in front and seemingly on their way to a vital three points, until a minute into stoppage time, cash did this. a stunning strike and a priceless point rescued. or was it? in the final seconds, west brom thought they'd got a winner, only for the flag to be for offside. points eventually shared, the race for the premier league is farfrom over. second placed leeds beat bristol city 1—0 as they aim for automatic promotion to the pmerie legaue. bottom of the table barnsley shocked third placed fulham with a 3—0 win. both barnsley goals came from former
7:45 pm
fulham player cauley woodrow. it was a 1—1 draw between birmgiham and promotion hopefuls, brentford. while millwall beat promotion—chasing preston north end 1—nil. relegation threatened wigan drew 2—2 with cardiff city. storm dennis was making its force felt in the match between southampton and burnley and the bad weather has caused a couple of postponements in the scottish premierhsip — motherwell — st mirren off due to a waterlogged pitch. and rangers against livingston has been moved to tomorrow. elsewhere bottom place hearts produced a two—goal comeback against 10—man hamilton to salvage 2—2 draw. hearts are still a point behind second from bottom hamilton. in the days‘s other match ross county scored a late equaliser at home to stjohnstone. so rangers and celtic are both due to play tomorrow. celtic currently 10 points ahead of rangers but they have played a game more. now many british athletes have been stepping up their winter preparations this weekend at the glasgow grand prix. this event saw two of scotland's big middle distance medal hopes

for the summer's 0lympics competing in separate events. both laura muir and jemma reekie won their respective races, but the day belonged to what could be one of athletics‘ newest stars, as young armand duplantis set a new pole vault world record for the second week in a row. joe lynskey reports. they are two women from the same nation and with the same coach, but in five months‘ time at lauren and jay marie kate could face each other for olympic gold. muir is already scotland‘s european champion, now she setting up for the greater state. she ran easily to victory in this race, but not the world record she hoped for. the foundation for what is comp. that is me for indoors, that has me done, training tomorrow back out the wind and tomorrow. reekie is five years muir‘sjunior, tomorrow. reekie is five years muir‘s junior, but she tomorrow. reekie is five years muir‘sjunior, but she is already broken if your records. her rise

7:48 pm

story on our website... it‘s the fifth round of the women‘s fa cup this weekend. tomorrow sees five ties including second—tier lewes with a tough draw — away to the 14—time champions arsenal. lewes hope though, that such a high profile game will help highlight their campaign for equal prize money, asjuliette parkin reports. arsenal are used to lifting the trophy, having won at a record 1a times. you‘ll make in a weight is a good draw, we get to play against so many internationals and arsenal are a massive name in women‘s football, an amazing opportunity for us all. little lewis pulling arsenal two playing away, they have such a big following himself, it is a good opportunity for us to keep spreading
