let's be kind, this is... thing. and let's be kind, this is... this is her sort of saying, i might have this privileged life that i still have all the same worries and call draw the same traumas as many other people who have children the morning sickness she had was unarguable. a cynic might say this is kate and william making a dash for the status expects space vacated by harry and meghan and they adjust to normal struggling to cope. they obviously thought, what do we have in common with the people over whom we will someday rain. and the answer is, noisy children. children and animals are great levellers. they don't care if you have a crown or a trs they've gone for something that does unite.
11:46 pm
that's it for the papers tonight. a big thank you to my guests this evening caroline frost, who stayed on — hope you feel better soon. and penny smith. that's all from us, and goodnight. next on bbc news it's the film review. buy a paper in the morning, please. night night. hello and a very welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. hi mark, what have you been watching? award season is out of the way.
11:47 pm
sonic the hedgehog. we also have another adaptation of emma, this time with a full stop at the end of the title. and the new film by takashi miike — first love, a valentine's offering with a difference. are you suggesting that sonic the hedgehog is not up foran award? not an oscar—winner necessarily. so, console game characters... did you ever play sonic the hedgehog? do you know what, i'm afraid i didn't. i'm not good at video games. that's fine because it means you can go |n... just not my... me neither, but it means you can go in open—minded. so, console game character, taken out of his native environment, sent to earth in order to get away from evil forces, teams up with a likeable sheriff but soon finds himself the subject of the attentions of a very evil scientist played byjim carrey, never knowingly understated. here's a clip. i'm going to give you five seconds to tell me where it is!
11:48 pm
five... ok, i don't know what you're talking about. ..four... hey, tough guy, i'm a cop, and you're threatning an officer. how can you threaten somebody who never existed ? ..three... come on, wrack your brain! you might be able to come up with some lame excuse to go on living, in two... ..one... wait, don't hurt him! screams now, weirdly enough, that reaction, when the first trailers for sonic the hedgehog came out, a bunch of people who were fans of the game said, "that's... you can't do that, thatt‘s completely wrong, it's too weirdly human, its teeth are scary, it doesn't look like the figure," and the producers of the film said, "0k, we're listening to this. we're going to go away and we're going to redesign the character. we're going to make him more like you know him, but still through cgi." the last time that happened was with cats.
11:49 pm
when the cats trailer came out everyone said it looked weird and terrible and creepy. they changed it and cats came out and it was terrible. in the case of sonic, they changed it, and you know what, it's ok. i'm not going to make any claims for it being a good or great movie. as you saw from that clip, jim carrey does what he does, which is to do everything like it's turned up to 15. it's pretty much, you know, what you'd expect in terms of a game—to—film adaptation in as much as they've taken the central character, they've put it in a new environment, they've head to create an awful lot of gizmos around him to make the plot work. but it's not awful. if you think about a genre that has produced a super mario brothers and street fighter, it's not that level of bad. it is, and i mean this in the best possible sense, bearable. laughter i love when you say things that are so going on the poster. i've seen a few clips and actually it's quite cute, and i actualy laughed a couple times. it's no more than that, but it could have been so much worse. let's remember, only a few months ago people were talking about cats as an awards contender, and sonic the hedgehog
11:50 pm
is way better than cats. which is also going on the poster — "way better than cats. " which brings us onto something a little more high—brow, which is emma. saying that because this version of emma does have a "full stop" after the title. i'm not entirely sure why. i'm curious why there's a "full stop". i don't really know. maybe it's, like, emma and that's all, or emma and this is the final version. somebody pointed out maybe it's a joke about it being a period piece because emma, period. i don't know whether that's the... this is a new version directed by autumn de wilde, who basically plays up the screwball element. she cited up bringing up baby as one of the inspirations. we have as emma anya taylor—joy, who was so brilliant in the witch and is a really, really talented actor. the thing that she brings to this is she makes emma pretty unlikable
11:51 pm
in kind of an engaging way. the point about emma is there's a reason emma has been adapted so many times, both for the big and small screen, because it's an indestructible text. it's so clever, so funny, so witty. it says so much about... she's quite an unlikable character, certainly at the beginning. and many screen adaptations and take those edges of her and make her somebody who's more loveable. i think this plays up that spikiness, but it's at the centre of something which is kind of a much more comedic confection. as you can see from some of these clips, it's very bright. it's beautifully dressed. there's a whole thing about everybody‘s collars are far too high as if all their heads have been, sort of, put on platters, and it's a beautiful—looking film. it does change the central tone of the novel. as i said, it does play up the comedy. there are some great performances. josh o'connor is nicely insufferable as mr elton. mia goth plays harriet, who, of course, emma takes under her wing and tries to educate her in the ways... tries to fix her up, and she plays her almost like a school kid. from the way she walks, she's almost, kind of, in a playground, so there's an element of caricature that's been brought to this and i don't think it's a definitive element, that's why i don't think emma. — it's not like emma and this is the last word on it.
11:52 pm
but anya taylor—joy is terrific. it's got great use of music. it's got a really great ensemble cast. bill nighy is terrific in it. and i think it will go down very well with the cinema crowd. i mean, i laughed all the way through and i've seen lots of adaptations of emma.... obviously there's humour in austin but it's not laugh—out—loud humour. often the humour is wry and eyebrow raised, but i enjoyed it and it is slightly confectionery but i did enjoy it. did you enjoy first love? i did but i don't think it is for you, it is by takashi miike, who made audition and ichi the killer and happiness of the katakuris, which is one of the most nuts films you can imagine. this is typicalfare, a valentine's day love story which starts with a decapitated head rolling into frame and it's about a young boxer who's terminally ill and therefore he loses his fear. he then gets mixed up with a young woman who he saves because he doesn't have any fear and, then it is a plot with yakuzas, corrupt cops, boxing, as i said before. things about honour and death and bloodshed... i'm already exhausted. ..all thrown together, and at one point it even turns into a cartoon. here's a clip.
11:53 pm
the thing is, watching a takashi miike film is like being hit over the head with exploitation cinema.
11:54 pm
everything is turned up to full volume. i think he's an extraordinary filmmaker. he's 63 years old, this is 103rd film, so he is absolutely no slouch. if what you like is that violent, sensational, romantic, exploitative, all those things, it's an alternative valentine's movie. it's completely the opposite of emma. i'm not recommending it for you because i don't think you'd like it, but if you're a takashi miike fan... you'll love it. ..you know what's going to be in this. which brings us nicely to the subject of best out, because this crosses all forms of genre. parasite, clearly the best thing out in cinema and has just won the oscar for best film, the first film entirely in a foreign language to do so. you really liked it? i did, even though there's a couple of moments of... elements of blood where i had to look away, but as a story i thought it was so clever, so interesting, really well written. which genre would you say it's in? this is where i struggle. i have struggled to describe it to people.
11:55 pm
exactly. social satire, i'd say, above everything. but with a ghost story element in it, with some moments of horror in it? with some dark humour. things you recoiled from. also some family melodrama mixed in there. yes, some bits are quite funny. and it's visually very striking. it has the most extraordinary soundtrack byjung jaeil, which, you know, goes from these piano tunes to this kind of choral stuff and the sound of a musical saw. there's so much going on in it, and i've now seen it four times i think and it's coming into cinemas after it's finished this run in a black and white version. and bong joon—ho, director bong, said the black—and—white version makes the shades of grey in the story even more pronounced, so i'm going to go back and see it a fifth time. i think it's perfect. fascinating. i'm interested to see what that does to it and you're right about the score, the music is... the music is astonishing. striking. actually it's a shame it's not been picked up on more, the music is brilliant. if you haven't seen parasite,
11:56 pm
go and see it, the best thing is to go and see it without knowing the story. absolutely. do not engage in plot spoilers, i haven't said any to anyone. tightlipped. very good. onto dvd, farmageddon. i love shaun the sheep! i do think that aardman are geniuses. they are geniuses. and if you look at a movie like farmageddon, the thing that's amazing about it, like i said, i watched parasite four times, you could watch farmageddon four, five or six times and every time you would see jokes that you didn't see the first time round. it's genuinely for all the family. it made me feel young at heart and i'm the youngest i know. so i absolutely loved it. nick park is a national treasure, the whole team are remarkable. the aardman are absolutely... and they are a team, they are absolutely a team, and it's, you know, i think they're great. lovely, thank you very much. see you next time. thank you very much for watching. enjoy your cinema going. see you soon. goodbye.
