9:01 pm
hello and welcome to world news today. south korea's prime minister has warned that the coronavirus outbreak there is entering a grave new phase after a surge in the number of cases. in a televised address, prime ministerjung say gyoon asked south koreans to avoid large gatherings, including religious events. the number of coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in a day with 229 people confirmed in the last 2a hours. that means there are a total of 433 cases in south korea — the highest number of infections in a country outside of china. many of the new cases are linked to a hospital in chung doh and a church in nearby daygoo. the our correspondent laura bicker has more from the capital, seoul. the area of concern is around the city of daegu.
9:02 pm
it is south korea's fourth largest city, a city of 2.5 million people. and the two areas of concern in there involve a hospital and a church. within the hospital, where there are 300 elderly and vulnerable patients, a third of them now have the coronavirus. two people there have died and nine staff have the coronavirus. outside of that, there is a church, the shincheonji church, it is a fringe religious movement, but it has a half a million members throughout south korea. 9000 of whom are in this area. they have all been told to stay at home. told to go into quarantine and they are being interviewed to see if they have any symptoms. a thousand of them say that they have coronavirus symptoms. now it doesn't necessarily mean that they have the virus, they need to have tested positive for the virus, but it is concerning for health authorities. now it appears that the members of this church were all at the hospital for a funeral
9:03 pm
a few weeks before. and that seems to be the connection. but right now the race is on to find out how many people they have been in contact with within the last few weeks, as they battle to try and prevent the spread of this virus. iran and italy are also taking steps to contain outbreaks of the coronavirus. iran says it will close schools and universities in the cities of qom and arak after the health ministry reported a sixth death from covid—i9 and a total of nearly thirty confirmed infections. pilgrimages to qom the centre of the outbreak have been suspended. in italy, a second person has died from the disease, and 50—thousand people in the northern region of lombardy have been told to stay at home. trains are not stopping at towns in the affected area as officials try to limit the further spread of the virus. turning back to asia and the largest cluster of coronavirus cases outside china has been on board the diamond princess cruise ship, docked in yokohama injapan.
9:04 pm
more than 620 people on board tested positive for the virus, but passengers from around the world have gradually been leaving after a two—week quarantine — many of them repatriated on specialflights. among them were thirty british and two irish holidaymakers — who arrived in the uk on saturday morning, and have now been taken to hospital near liverpool wirral where they will spend the next fourteen days in quarantine. our correspondent, fiona trott has the story of their journey from japan. finally back in britain. they've waited a long time for this and their patientence has been tested. after more than two weeks of quarantine on board the diamond princess, this 12 hour repatriation flight was delayed and then they started a four hour coach journey to the north west of england. this will be their new home for the next two weeks. a nursing accommodation block at arrowe park hospital. they will have clinical supplies and a few
9:05 pm
home comforts. staff here have already looked after travellers from china and know what to expect. the group of people is slightly different. 0bviously they have come from a cruise ship rather than from their own homes over in china. but we are working exactly the same as we did before with their health care professionals, public health england, to make sure that they are safe and well managed and comfortable while they are with us. the passengers left the diamond princess on friday night. it was carrying 78 britons. some have already been evacuated to hong kong. it is understood that the others include crew members who are thought to be staying on board. at least four are still in japan. they contracted the virus on the ship. two of them are sally and david abel who also have pneumonia. at first they were relieved at the hospital care they received. today their family are anxious and angry.
9:06 pm
my dad is like saying, i can't do any more of this, son. you need to get me out of here. it is like a prison here. we have got no washing facilities, we've got one toilet to share. we have a small window in our hotel room which overlooks a brick wall which is six inches away. we've got no natural daylight coming into the room. it's awful, no treatment. these travellers are preparing themselves for yet another two weeks of quarantine. they may be back on uk soil, but they are still far from home. democrats in the us state of nevada are voting in presidential caucuses in the race to choose a candidate to take on president trump in november's electon. the left—wing senator bernie sanders is favourite to win, with some of the moderate candidates needing a good showing to keep their campaigns alive. sophie long is in las vegas. good to see you. bernie sanders is out in front. yes. he is out in
9:07 pm
front in the polls nationally and across nevada and here as well actually. you join me in north las vegas and caucusing hasjust actually. you join me in north las vegas and caucusing has just got under way. it was supposed to start a couple of hours ago but there was a couple of hours ago but there was a lot of administrative work. this is first alignment, the voters that you see, they have gathered for bernie sanders. a little bit to the right are bernie sanders. a little bit to the rightarea bernie sanders. a little bit to the right are a few people still stand by another sheet of paper which says joe biden on it. they are going through the first alignment phase. we are told thatjoe biden had nine fa u lts we are told thatjoe biden had nine faults in total and people in person here and early voting is taking place across nevada. it is quite a complicated process they are going full. joe biden is not viable. what will happen now is all those people who cast their first votes and gathered by a sheet of paper
9:08 pm
literally on the floor of this gem will go to second alignment and they will go to second alignment and they will either go for bernie sanders or another candidate. that is what is going on here at the moment. it is quite interesting to see, this caucus is being run in north las vegas by high school students and the governor was here earlier and said students are running the caucus. what people are very nervous about across nevada is that we will get a repeat of the chaos in reporting results that took place in iowa a few weeks ago. the democratic party there —— michael here say they're confident it will not happen. they are using different system, a form of google forms and they have also got early voting to combine with those results. 75,000 people across nevada took advantage of early voting and we are seeing
9:09 pm
now how those results are being combined. this will go on for a little while yet, but the picture at the moment is that bernie sanders is expected to do very well. he has a strong support base among latinos voters in nevada and a mad gap nearly a third of the voters. this is only the third state to vote, but it seems important because it is the first diverse tight and very loosely and roughly it mirrors the diversity of the us nationally. that is what is going on in a moment and i think people see people move to a different part of the hall as the caucus continues here in vegas. sophie, it is quite a quaint way of doing it, certain states run their elections in different ways obviously for this process. just remind us how we get from here for someone remind us how we get from here for someone to take on donald trump in november. it is quite, a good word to use, it is amazing when you think about the size of the us and when we get to the democratic national convention, the huge operation under
9:10 pm
way there, but this is where it sta rts way there, but this is where it starts in thousands of school gyms like this one, all across the state. we will get the results hopefully reported across nevada at some point tonight or tomorrow morning and next week there will be a primary vote in south carolina, the next day to go. what people will be looking for is not just who winds what people will be looking for is notjust who winds here but who also comes in second place. bernie sanders is
9:11 pm
expected to do very well, butjoe biden, it is crucialfor him that expected to do very well, butjoe biden, it is crucial for him that he has a strong showing here. he had a lacklustre performance in iowa and new hampshire and he will need to do well here to gain momentum to move through to south carolina. he has a strong support base there. the real test will be super tuesday and that is just over test will be super tuesday and that isjust over one test will be super tuesday and that is just over one week. 14 states will vote including states like california who have hundreds of delegates. delegates is what this process is about. they want to gather delegates from each state to ta ke to gather delegates from each state to take to the national dimension and thatis take to the national dimension and that is where we will find out who will be the person to take on donald trump in november. we will let you get back to watching the voting. sophie long in las vegas. there are new hopes of a peace deal in afghanistan with the start of seven days of what's being called a period of "reduced violence" between us—led forces and taliban fighters. it could lead to the withdrawal of foreign troops after nearly two decades of war. from kabul, our correspondent secunder kermani reports. celebrations late last night as the "reduction in violence" came into effect. for the next seven days, the taliban, afghan government and us forces have promised not to carry out major attacks. helping pave the way, it's hoped, for an eventual peace deal. afghanistan is a country that has been torn apart by conflict. tens of thousands have been killed.
9:12 pm
for more than a year, though, the united states has been trying to negotiate an exit to its longest ever war. the taliban wants to make a deal. we'll see if they want to make a deal, it's got to be a real deal. but we'll see. that has meant talking to the taliban. the two sides have drawn up a deal that would see a timetable established for the withdrawal of american troops in exchange for the taliban breaking links with groups like al-qaeda. if this week passes peacefully, they will sign an agreement next weekend. it depends how honest the taliban are. if they do what they say, we will have peace. if they don't, they are just playing with us. but even if the us—taliban agreement is signed, that won't be the end of this conflict. instead, it will signal the start of a new set of discussions, this time between the taliban and other afghan political leaders, about a broader ceasefire and about how the country should be run in the future. for many afghans, the immediate priority is peace.
9:13 pm
more than 3000 civilians lost their lives here last year. now there's a chance, at least, of an end to the violence. secunder kermani, bbc news, kabul. stay with us on bbc world news, still to come:south africa celebrates the life ofjoseph shaba lala with a state funeral for the founder of the ladysmith black mam bazo singing group. prince charles has chosen his bride. the prince proposed to lady diana spencer three weeks ago. she accepted, she says, without hesitation. as revolutions go, this had its fair share of bullets. a climax in the night outside the gates of mr marcos' sanctuary. the name of that itself symbolising one of the cruellest regimes in modern asia. the world's first clone has been produced of an adult mammal. scientists in scotland have produced a sheep called dolly
9:14 pm
who is a clone of another sheep. warren beatty and faye dunaway announced to the world that the winner of best film was la la land. the only trouble was, it wasn't. the mistake was only put right in the middle of gushing speeches by the team behind the modern musical. not for 20 years have locusts been seen in such numbers in this part of africa. some of the swarms have been ten miles long. this is the last time the public will see this pope. very soon, for the sake of the credibility and authority of the next pope, benedict xvi will, in his own words, be hidden from the world for the rest of his life. this is bbc world news today. the latest headlines there's concern about the spread of the new coronavirus outside china. in south korea —— the number
9:15 pm
of cases has doubled since friday, thirty two british and irish tourists have arrived at a quarantine centre in the uk— after being evacuated from a coronavirus—hit cruise ship in japan. us officials are claiming that thousands of russian—linked social media accounts are trying to spread alarm and disinformation about the coronavirus. they say fake twitter, facebook and instagram accounts are being used to spread baseless conspiracies, including the suggestion that the cia was behind the virus. moscow has yet to respond. was behind the virus. dr bhaskar chakra vorti is dean of global business at the fletcher school of law and diplomacy at tufts university. he's been tracking the effect of digital technology on issues such as global health. thank you for being with us. why would russia do this, spread online disinformation, false information about the coronavirus? well this follows a long established tradition of the kgb spreading false news
9:16 pm
about a bio weapons programme. primarily originated by the cia. perhaps the most well—known form of fa ke perhaps the most well—known form of fake news about a bio weapons programme was back in 1983 when the kgb spread rumours that the cia had deliberately created the hiv virus to kill african—american men. deliberately created the hiv virus to kill african-american men. why would russia make up those lies? what does it gain from doing that?l large part of this is to discredit the united states and global public opinion and that has been part of a campaignfor opinion and that has been part of a campaign for decades through the cold war and it is nowjust continuing and another factor that
9:17 pm
adds to the complexity is that the kgb is also actively engaged in interfering in the 2020 american elections. so, spreading these kinds of rumours potentially helps create added tensions between the united states and china and that might have an impact on the outcome of the 2020 elections. of course nowadays everything is amplified through social media. what are those platforms, twitter, facebook etc doing about this? it is very interesting what the platforms are doing in response to the fake news thatis doing in response to the fake news that is spreading about the coronavirus. facebook in fact has diverged from the other two major accou nts diverged from the other two major accounts twitter and youtube, owned by google. facebook has taken the
9:18 pm
policy of censoring or shutting down any messages that do not meet its third party fact checking standards. twitter and youtube are letting that content ride on their platforms but they are providing a link to a who side or the centre for disease control site. this is the first time that facebook has actually shut down content that it believes is false and that is a pretty significant outcome of what is going on in terms of how platforms are responding to the explosion of information following the covid—19 outbreak. thank you very much for talking us through that. thank you. gavin has all the sport. hello and thanks forjoining us. there's a huge amount of hype and anticipation ahead of tyson fury‘s world heavyweight rematch with deontay wilder — the pair go head to head in las vegas in just a few hours' time. they weighed in overnight —
9:19 pm
and were made to stay apart after clashing at the press conference. wilder — the heaviest he's been for a fight, while fury has also weighed in heavier than the first bout between these two. that fight back in 2018 was a draw, but an explosive encounter. ade adedoyin is there for us. all the talking is down to the fighters who weighed in yesterday, the next time they see each other will be in the ring by me. we have been waiting for 15 months for this rematch and all the ingredients are there for it to be a great night. they could not split the judges that night in la and i have spoken to lots of boxing dignitaries who have come here the likes of david hayes and evander holyfield, they are struggling to pick a winner, some are going for tyson fury because of his technical ability and others are going for deontay wilder. deontay wilder is his heaviest ever. the last time he came in this heavy he was a little bit sluggish in his performance and this is an element to add into the intrigue. really fascinating and it has all the ingredients for it to be a really great night. i am sure it will be.

when giovani lo celso escaped a red card for a second—half tackle on cesar azpilicueta. the video assistant referee decided against punishment, although officials in stockley park later admitted a mistake had been made and the player should have been sent off. this one didn't need to go to the monitor, it needed to be decided it was a red card. it was clear, i would say that was one of my players it isa would say that was one of my players it is a tackle that seriously endangers azpilicueta. everybody who knows football can sing it straightaway and it is not good enough and i am disappointed, we had two ina enough and i am disappointed, we had two in a way, it did not affect the game today, it would have on monday. iam game today, it would have on monday. i am disappointed because i am an advocate of var and i wanted to work and get those decisions right because that is what we all want and it was so clear was a red incident. it leads to more questions for us. just above chelsea are manchester city — who have tightened their grip on second place. they beat third placed leicester 1—0 to move seven points

ta ke vegas. this is for who they want to take on in the presidential election. we will keep you up—to—date with how that was the next couple of hours. goodbye. —— democrats are voting. hello again, heavy rain and flooding seems to be a recurrent theme and we have more troublesome weather on the way. at the moment there are 100 flood warnings in place with the numbers are increasing in england and scotland in the last 2a hours and scotland in the last 2a hours and look at this, we have a 4000 mile long weather from coming and look at this, we have a 4000 mile long weatherfrom coming our way. underneath all the cloud, to areas of low pressure one for sunday and one for monday. both of these have the potential to cause further problems. first of all, the area of low pressure tonight and cloud will
9:27 pm
increase and some of the wettest weather heading across wales and the north of england. areas that had saturated ground and another to 20 or 40 millimetres of rain. first of all, tonight's area of low pressure. cloud will quickly increase, outbreaks of rain forecast to spread in. some of the wettest weather heading across wales and northern england, areas that normally done that already have completely saturated ground, another 20—40 millimetres of rain and perhaps more over the high ground and we could see further flooding issues across these areas and perhaps also in parts of the midlands. on sunday the rain pulls southwards, the sky is brightening, so it's an improving weather picture, for scotland, sunshine and showers, showers continue to be wintry, and over the high ground there will be some snow. windy but not as windy as it has been, the cool air in the north and milder conditions in the south. as we head into sunday night and into monday, the next area of low pressure is set to steam in, this one also likely to cause problems but for different reasons. it is going to be cold before that area of low pressure arrives and the rain likely to turn to snow, perhaps for a time in northern ireland and northern england before turning back to rain. but in scotland the snow may well stay with us longer and potentially push down to lower levels for a time as well as the risk of snow as we head into monday,
9:28 pm
there will be some strong winds across the northern half of the country that could also bring some transport disruption. it looks like the worst of the conditions on monday will be targeting scotland and perhaps more particularly the monday morning rush hour with some heavy snow causing problems here. there will be some more heavy rain for northern england and that could lead to further flooding issues. elsewhere, the weather does slowly improve through monday but it's going to be blustery even into the afternoon when there will be further showers flowing in on that strong and gusty wind. beyond that for the rest of the week, low pressure firmly in charge, it's often going to be very windy with rain or showers coming along, some heavy rain particularly on thursday and at times it will be cold enough for some of the rain to fall as snow.
