this is bbc news i'm shaun ley. the headlines at apm: more than 100 people evacuated from china because of coronavirus — are released from isolation in milton keynes. the virus has spread to 21 countries — six people have now died in south korea. in italy, where more than 100 cases have been confirmed, this year's venice carnival has been cut short. tyson fury produces the best performance of his boxing career against deontay wilder — to become the new wbc heavyweight world champion. when i came here they said i can't punch. deontay wilder said himself i've got two pillow fists. but, you know, not bad for an old, fat guy who can't punch, hey? bernie sanders cements his status as the democratic front—runner to take on donald trump in november's us presidential election.

in the six nations — tries from ford and daly give england control against ireland at twickenham — they lead 17—0. and coming up in half an hour... click looks at the technology making valuable resources out of thin air. good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. more than 100 people who were evacuated from china two weeks ago due to the coronavirus outbreak are being released from isolation at a conference centre in milton keynes. the group, who were brought back to britain earlier this month on a repatriation flight from wuhan, have been in quarantine since they arrived back. meanwhile, italy has announced what it's described as "urgent" and "extraordinary" measures
4:02 pm
to tackle the biggest coronavirus outbreak in europe, with more than 100 people taken ill there. the european union said there was ‘no need to panic‘ after 11 towns in the north of the country were placed under strict quarantine, with nobody allowed in or out. and the virus is continuing to spread rapidly in asia and the middle east. jenny kumah reports. frustration mounts as these people, many in masks, queue up to buy food in the region of lombardy. the supermarket is just outside a town which is on lockdown as part of emergency measures to stop the spread of coronavirus. this policeman tells them that the supermarket wants to open but the managers want to avoid chaos in the shop. they are waiting for instructions to ensure the safety of customers and staff. italy has seen more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any other country in europe. two people, both in their 70s, have died. the government has responded by bringing in quarantine measures. around 50,000 people in lombardy and veneto have been
4:03 pm
asked to stay at home. translation: italians must not surrender to feelings of panic or counter—productive alarmism. they should trust health authorities first and then the political and administrative authorities. the world health authority is worried by the rise of cases in other parts of the world outside of china. south korea is on its highest level of alert. here in the uk, around 150 patients who were evacuated from china two weeks ago are being allowed to leave this training centre in milton keynes after finishing their quarantine. how long have you been inside? two weeks. how was it? very good, the staff and everything, everything excellent. the nhs staff done a brilliantjob. number two, wuhan was quarantined and since we have been here, we have been treated brilliantly. nine cases of the virus have been confirmed in the uk so far.
4:04 pm
if a global pandemic were to be declared, it's likely things would move to a different stage here, with the nhs creating extra beds for the sickest and most vulnerable. jenny kumar, bbc news. 0ur correspondent katharine da costa sent this update from milton keynes. the quarantine was lifted here about 7am this morning and guests were free to go. by midday all 118 people had left this conference centre. manyjust wanted to get home. some did stop and told us they had been well looked after. they said the first two days had been the hardest when they were confined to their rooms, but they were treated to some creature comforts, mobile phones, tablets and fitness equipment. and their spirits had been boosted by donations from the public including flowers and even toys for the children. now today, those we spoke to thanked the staff, the doctors and nurses who'd looked after them. i thank the people for all
4:05 pm
what they have done for us, and they tried their best and we are very satisfied. well, everyone here had been tested for coronavirus three times and each time the test results came back negative. so they pose no risk to the public. this afternoon the nhs released a statement thanking them for their compliance and it noted that in the coming weeks more of us may need to spend more time at home to reduce the spread of this virus. and it said, those here in milton keynes had set the best example of how to remain calm and patient in what must have been a very difficult situation. italy has cancelled the last two days of the venice carnival because of an outbreak of coronavirus. 0ur corresondent in rome, mark lowen, explained the measures being taken to try and contain any further spread of the virus.
4:06 pm
effectively around about 50,000 people have been placed under quarantine, banned from leaving or entering those regions as the government scrambles to try to contain this outbreak. as you say, italy is now the country in europe that has been worst affected. there have been more than 100 cases now centred around northern italy, the regions of lombardy, around milan and veneto. and two deaths, both of them elderly people and there have also been attempts to try and stop people from gathering those areas. so for example, football matches in serie a, the top football league have been cancelled in that area. also, universities have closed for a week and there is even talk of cancelling the venice carnival. so the italian government saying there is no reason to panic, they are putting in place these measures but the fear is, if the virus outbreak spreads beyond these regions, into the rest of italy.
4:07 pm
let me bring you some breaking news about cases here in the uk. the number of cases has ridden. four further patients in england have tested positive for corona virus. it was passed on in the diamond princess cruise ship from which some of the patients were flown home yesterday. the virus has been passed on, the patients who are affected have been transferred from arrow park hospital, so presumably they we re park hospital, so presumably they were people who travel from boscombe down a military airbase yesterday lunchtime, up to arab park, but the plan was to isolate them for two weeks. those who tested positive will remain in isolation for the full two weeks. those who tested
4:08 pm
negative, rather. those who tested positive have been transferred to specialist infection centres. four additional cases, linked to the repatriation of passengers from the diamond princess cruise ship. they we re diamond princess cruise ship. they were at arrow park on the wirral, they have been transferred to specialist care. in total, 13 people are known to have been affected currently in the uk and we will bring you any more on that as soon as we get it. that has been filed by catherine da costa, reporting from milton keynes. let's return to italy. i spoke to the journalist sabina castelfranco a little earlier, and she explained how people in venice were reacting to the news. it was a very festive atmosphere in venice until today, obviously,
4:09 pm
now people are concerned about what is going on. two people here in venice have been hospitalised and it appears there are other confirmed cases in the city. so tourists are concerned and there is a lot of people in the city at the moment, obviously, for these events which normally last for a number of weeks. you know, people just don't know what they need to be doing at this moment. i have seen a lot of people wearing period costumes, carnival costumes and, obviously, surgical masks. it is not the usual masks you see on the streets of venice this time of year. some of the measures the italian government are making, these effective quara ntining of whole towns, but it is leaving some people asking if it is too little, too late? a lot of very strict measures, but italy was one of the first countries to stop flights to and from china. it is very unclear how this kind of situation has developed. yes, you are right a number
4:10 pm
of strict measures have been taken, including closing cinemas, schools, universities and people should not go to work in those towns, that are in a situation of lockdown. there is the army there because people have been told to stay indoors and not leave the town and people should not arrive at those towns either. so a lot of very serious measures. i think more are to come, you know. there has been an emergency decree that has been passed that allows the government, basically, it allows the government to adopt special measures and this is what they are doing. let's see what happens because if it does spread to other regions, it could be very serious indeed for this country.
4:11 pm
turkey, pakistan and afghanistan have announced they are temporarily closing their borders with iran as part of efforts to stem the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. it comes as iran's supreme leader, ayatollah ali khamenei, has praised what he's called the "stunning turnout" in friday's parliamentary election despite the threat of coronavirus. for more on the situaion in iran, i'm joined now by bbc persian‘s siavash ardalan. thank you for coming in, i know you and your colleagues have been busy because of the elections. i know there has been a hot spot in the region four confirmed cases, do we know any more yet about where the infection established itself? we do know iran is right in the centre because it has the highest fatality rate outside of china, eight people have been confirmed that out of 43 cases, which is a very high fatality
4:12 pm
rate. people asking if a lot more people have contracted the virus that has been confirmed. they haven't said exactly how, but the health ministry has said they suspected an iranian merchant he was travelling back and forth to china may have carried this virus. there area may have carried this virus. there are a lot of chinese companies operating in iran because of the us sanctions and there are a lot of chinese workers. they have traced it back to one chinese worker. whether they are still there or they have gone back home, is not clear. this presumably has caused quite a lot of nervousness in iran, never mind in official circles, but with the public. it is a young population in iran, relatively young, so that is positive in terms of the health prospect of being able to fight it off, but they must be concerned about how quickly it has appeared.
4:13 pm
absolutely, just like in the case of italy, it seemed like overnight, the outpouring of this news about this outbreak. just until thursday, government officials were adamantly suggesting that anyone in iran had contracted the virus and then they could no longer hide when social media pictures came out. you are talking about a country which has faced a number of multiple crises over the past months, economic, social and political. they came on the brink of military confrontation with the us, nationwide street protest a nd with the us, nationwide street protest and the crippling us sanctions. but now this has com pletely sanctions. but now this has completely changed the conversation. that is one of the difficulties because the authorities are suffering from this siege mentality and they don't want to lose any semblance of normality. they don't wa nt to semblance of normality. they don't want to create a sense of panic. although they are not in control of what is happening. although it is a situation that is very hard to
4:14 pm
control? the government has created a task force and they cannot hide it any more, they have closed schools and all sports events and so on. they are doing what they can but the health ministry is measuring a lot of resistance from the religious and other political establishments. they suggest they should quarantine the whole religious city. but they don't wa nt to whole religious city. but they don't want to do that. the old—fashioned clerics are saying, go there and pray to get better. so these are some of the challenges the health ministry is facing. they sell saying if you let us do a job, maybe we can contain the virus. this is all happening with an election that took place and the government won and said coronavirus had been an attempt to suppress turnout? that may have affected the turnout. the turnout has been in president lee lo a 42%. the lowest it has ever been is 51%.
4:15 pm
the lowest it has ever been is 51%. the government's candidates were banned and disqualified from running. so we're talking about the hardliners affiliated with the revolutionary guards who have seized the parliament in a non—competitive election. they may blame it on a coronavirus, this lack of turnout. but the news of the coronavirus has com pletely but the news of the coronavirus has completely overshadowed the election is now anyway. thank you very much for coming in to us. the british boxer, tyson fury, has won the wbc world heavyweight title, overwhelming the american, deontay wilder, in devastating style. fury twice knocked his opponent to the floor, before wilder threw in the towel in the seventh round. it's a remarkable comeback for the boxer, who's suffered problems with drink, drugs and depression. as a young boxer tyson fury trained atjimmy egan's boxing academy at wythenshawe in manchester. 0ur correspondent fiona trott is there. not many clubs can say that they have trained a two—time heavyweight champion of the world.
4:16 pm
but this is where it started for tyson fury, here in wythenshawe. 1a years old, six feet four, weighing 1a stone. they took one look at him and knew that he was going to be a champion. i trained him from 14 to 20. took him to world level on the amateur side, so really, really proud. the first time he came in the gym, within a couple of minutes i'd said to my dad, jimmy, "heavyweight champion of the world." my dad said, "he's just walked through the bleedin' door." you know, ijust knew. with the talent i could see, the raw talent, you look into the future as you've developed other kids and know how they progress and better and better. ijust knew he'd be heavyweight champion of the world. well, the children here this afternoon say that tyson fury is a real inspiration for them. for their parents though, they were up watching the match and they're absolutely shattered. but they say there is still time for celebrations here in wythenshawe.

turkey's president recep tayyip erdogan has announced he'll meet the french, german and russian leaders early next month, as the situation in north western syria continues to deteriorate. nearly one million people have fled the fighting, as the government of president bashar al—assad attempts to recapture the opposition—held province of idlib. the save the children charity says it's the largest wave of people displaced by the conflict since it began almost nine years ago, and it's growing rapidly by the day. amjad yamin is the advocacy, media and communications director for save the children's syria response 0ffice, hejoins me now. thank you very much for speaking to us. we have spoken on bbc news to you and your colleagues. years now over various hotspots during the course of the war and the attempts that have been made. partially successful, sometimes frustrated by arms group and sometimes frustrated by syrian troops to get aid in. a

serious situation now in idlib? for nine years now, families have been displaced from one area to another. they are trying to find safety for theirfamilies. what they are trying to find safety for their families. what we are seeing now, is the biggest wave of displacement we have seen for nine yea rs displacement we have seen for nine years now. we may have to talk to you previously about this in different areas where we have seen conflict. but we have not seen, until today anything approaching this number. we are talking about the numbers increasing. three weeks ago we were seeing 10,000 people being displaced. last week we saw 50,000 being displaced. the 500 are displaced a day. 50,000 people is

catastrophic right now on the ground. i was talking in the middle of the week to the un undersecretary, who is responsible for humanitarian affairs and relief. he had been briefing the european council that day setting up these points you are making at the security council was unable to reach even an agreement to issue a statement, asking for a ceasefire and an opportunity for humanitarian help to go in. if the countries of the un cannot agree this, presumably you have very little confidence of it happening on the ground. even if turkey and syria, somehow were to agree a pause in the fighting? there isa agree a pause in the fighting? there is a way for the united nation's security council to find a way to command a ceasefire. we understand it is difficult but the people in idlib have been saying this, they cannot be forgotten. they have nobody left. we know it is difficult, but we cannot leave this
4:20 pm
to be as politicised as it has become. it is a humanitarian conversation. we should be able to bring in aid into syria. it has been overly politicised and we cannot allow this to become that. there are more than 3 million civilians who are relying on the international community but politicians are saying it is too difficult to sort out. community but politicians are saying it is too difficult to sort outlj spoke to david miliband, the former british secretary and he said he believed that while the arguments we re believed that while the arguments were going on in new york and istanbul and now we are going to have this meeting injust istanbul and now we are going to have this meeting in just over a week involving the other leaders i mentioned just now, the situation is getting worse. he said war crimes are being committed and he described it as are being committed and he described itasa are being committed and he described it as a second gaza developing. his organisation has said it, individual

countries have said it. why is it not possible to garner this view to provide basic protection. the un agreed a duty of —— to intervene several years ago? unfortunately, the united nations now seem to be the united nations now seem to be the least of the problem of the security council. this is impacting every decision being made on the ground in syria. more than half of these people are children. 1.5 million are children. this doesn't include their views or wishes on the ground. we need the security council to prioritise the humanitarian situation. rather than turn this into a political debate. thank you

for joining into a political debate. thank you forjoining us. sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, here's 0lly. tyson fury declared that the king has returned to the top. he produced a masterclass in las vegas to take the wbc world heavyweight title from deontay wilder 15 months on from their draw. the american has the option of another rematch, but the boxing world will now be clamouring for a unification fight with anthonyjoshua. our sports editor dan roan was at the fight ina defining

that catherine da costa, our correspondent in milton keynes filed this morning. she is with me. this is the news of further cases? yes, in the last half an hour we have had an update from the government from the chief medical officer who said their are four new cases of covid—19. bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the uk to 13. the virus was passed on board the diamond princess crew ship, the ship that had been injapan. passengers, more than 3700 passengers had already been in quarantine on the ship for a fortnight. their patients had been transferred from there. among the 32 uk nationals and family members who were transferred back to the uk, flown into the military base and taken to arrow park. they had tested negative, but the test
4:28 pm
results from japan have come back positive and they have identified there are these four patients and they have been taken away to nhs infection centres. so they are saying these tests were taken in japan and the results have just come through. it is not that they were tested when they got to arrow park last night. there was an apology from the japanese health minister a few hours ago, saying we messed up a bit on the diamond princess. a p pa re ntly bit on the diamond princess. apparently some other passenger was discharged a few days ago and had a negative result. went off with her husband on public transport and turned up positive. but on this case they had been tested and is just that the test only came through today? yes, what the government has told us, there had been an infectious disease risk assessment carried out before the fight so nobody was showing any symptoms of the virus before, they would not have been allowed on the flight. but they have come to the uk and those
4:29 pm
test results from japan have come back as positive and have been confirmed. as you say, there has been criticism about the handling of the cruise ship injapan. more than 600 people contracted the virus on board that ship and we know that four british nationals were among those. they have had to stay in japan be treated in hospitals there. he will know david and sally abel. they spoke quite a lot about their current situation. they were very worried and want to come back as soon as possible. going back to the information we have been updated with, since then, people have been keptin with, since then, people have been kept in isolation from each other. all the staff are wearing protective clothing so the patients are in isolation. everybody else at arrow park, they are there for 1h days? yes, they have just started their
