hello. last week's weather and flooding, i'm sure most of us would rather forget. those historic high river levels in parts of england and wales. the weather a year ago was remarkable, but for different reasons, and i'lljog your memory about that in a couple of minutes‘ time. but first of all of course we want to know if there is more rain on the way this week. and this low pressure gives for monday more rain and snow in places. once that clears, we're into a flow
9:55 pm
of colder air with plenty of wintry showers around, and then low pressure coming back to us later in the week with more rain for areas that have seen the worst of the flooding at the moment. that's how the week looks on the big scale. let's take a look at it day by day. and it's for northern ireland, northern england and scotland, there will be some very wintry weather around is monday starts. some snow falling to quite low levels in places, more especially for the hills where there will be some significant accumulations. could well start to drift as the wind picks up, still snow falling across a large part of northern scotland on through the afternoon. gusty winds, those wins will drive an area of rain southwards across the rest of england and wales, clearing to bright skies and a few showers, and a big range of temperatures across the uk from north to south. that's no clear away scotland on monday night, turning icy behind that, and then we looked at this change in wind direction to north—westerly, around low pressure in iceland driving in colder air, yes, and along with that there will be some sunshine, there will be some drier moments, but plenty of showers around too.
9:56 pm
so this is how tuesday's looking. the showers may merge to give some longer spells of wet weather moving through southern parts at times. hail, thunder possible, and yes some sleet and snow, not necessarilyjust on hills at times too. if anything, wednesday's looking a bit colder. those wintry showers more towards the north and west, but some will push south and east on a brisk wind which is adding another element to the weather. they will be a wind chill, it will feel colder than these temperatures might suggest, and the frost in places overnight. a chance for icy patches too. but then towards the end of the week, we lose the showers and start to bring back low pressure and the potential for some longer spells of wet weather once again. there's a lot of uncertainty about thursday, particularly with this next area of low pressure to the south, how developed it will be, how widespread any rain will be. so thursday it may not look like this by the time we get to it, so keep checking back for an update. there is actually more confidence about friday and this next weather system coming in, that it will be more developed and will start to bring more widely some rain back into the uk, including for areas that are flooded. some of that rain may be heavy,
9:57 pm
but still something to play for again on friday in terms of the detail, at least where the wet weather's coming in, change of wind direction will bring something a bit milder. and looking into next weekend, behind this latest weather system, we're back into a colder flow with sunshine and a few hours, but even into the following week, it look like areas of low pressure are coming oui’ way. deep into march, there are signs that high pressure may build across at least southern parts of the uk to settle things down at times. that's outside the range of this particular broadcast, but we'll keep an eye on that. in terms of this week, yes, it will be wet at times. rain more especially early and late in the week. it will be blustery, it will be turning colder with showers, and it's notjust rain. as we've established, there will be some snow in places too. it's all a far cry from what was happening a year ago, when the uk notched up its highest winter temperature on record. 21.2 celsius. i'm not saying that's a good thing. that's a freak event, and may be a sinister sign of our warming, changing climate. but a year ago, there
9:58 pm
was a spring in the air, where was this week, winter still very much in charge.
