1:38 pm
been cancelled. that is a major event, it brings people in from all over europe, so it is the first really big event, perhaps, we can sta ke really big event, perhaps, we can stake has been cancelled because of the virus. the number of cases in this country in the uk stands at 53 at the moment, but england's chief medical officer is warning that we are likely, still, to see an epidemic, but that is the number as it stands, 53. scotland's first minister, nicola sturgeon, says that scotla nd minister, nicola sturgeon, says that scotland is still in the containment face of the honours. two people of we re face of the honours. two people of were found to have the virus overnight. the two cases confirmed overnight. the two cases confirmed overnight bring the total to three, in the grampian area and in ayrshire. one has returned from travelling in italy, the other has had travelling in italy, the other has ha d co nta ct travelling in italy, the other has had contact with another confirmed positive case, though i must stress
1:39 pm
thatis positive case, though i must stress that is not the first case confirmed in scotland, so i'm not able to give more information, confidentiality continues to be important, but all appropriate steps have been taken, and both patients are being cared for, and we are very much in the containment phase, and ike would assure everyone that it is being followed up and tested when necessary , followed up and tested when necessary, and all the appropriate advice is being given. there is no change to the information. obviously, there is a balance to be struck. when patients have any illness, patients have a right to confidentiality, but when there is a significant outbreak, the assurance to the public as that all steps are being taken, to the public as that all steps are being ta ken, because to the public as that all steps are being taken, because the focus is very much on containing the spread of the virus, so if we can stop it spreading from individual to
1:40 pm
individual, then we have come at the very least, delayed the time at which this will take hold of the community, and hopefully stop that happening. again, iwould community, and hopefully stop that happening. again, i would stress to the public that every single one of us can the public that every single one of us can play a part. i know people reading, what they are reading the media and what they are hearing, if you look at the nhs website, that is a good resource. if you don't have symptoms, you are simply looking for advice, the helpline rather than the 111 number is the one to call. if eve ryo ne 111 number is the one to call. if everyone follows the public advice on what is their hands properly. nicola sturgeon talking about the health advice. let's have a reminder about the best way to protect yourself from coronavirus. public health england reminding people that they should be washing their hands they should be washing their hands the 20 seconds in order to guard against the virus. these have been
1:41 pm
examining the advice. a lot of people are worrying about coronavirus. we see a lot of people with masks. i wonder if i really need to go out. most of us expected if we catch coronavirus, it will be mild. for some of us, it could be serious. these are mostly people with underlying conditions like asthma or heart disease. this is what the nhs says you should do, evenif what the nhs says you should do, even if you are not likely to be affected by coronavirus... even if you are not likely to be affected by coronavirus. .. you may pass it someone else. wash your hands more. the more you wash your hands, the less likely to spread the disease. and properly wash your hands. that takes about 20 seconds,
1:42 pm
to get the really clean, focusing on all parts of your hand, notjust your palm. backs of hands, around your palm. backs of hands, around your nails, in between the fingers. use soap and water. when you are done, turn the tap off using a tissue and put it in the bin. antibacterial gels to work, but soap and water is best. avoid touching your eyes and nose and mouth. that is the way the virus can get into your body. you can touch your face, but only if you have washed your hands before. experts think coronavirus is spread by droplets that come out of your nose and mouth, so when you sneeze or cough, catch them as disposable tissues, then bennett and wash your hands. disposable tissues are better than handkerchiefs that you carry around with you all the time. if you don't have a tissue, sneeze or cough into the crook of your elbow. that way, the crook of your elbow. that way, the germs are away from your hands, and you are less likely to pass them on, unless you greet people using
1:43 pm
your elbow. the less you touch things like surfaces, handrails, lift buttons, the less likely you are to catch the virus, or, indeed, spread it on. if people are unwell, don't get too close to them. the closer you get, the more likely you are to catch something. apart from that, you should go about your life as normal. you should go to work, go to school and see your friends. u nless to school and see your friends. unless you have been told to by your doctor or the nhs iii coronavirus service. when it to travelling, check with the foreign office before you you plan to go. it is important to say that there is no evidence you can catch coronavirus of letters, parcels of food, and these things won't work when it comes to treating coronavirus. uv light, antibiotics, garlic and saline solution. as for masks, they are very important when you masks, they are very important when you come masks, they are very important when you come in close contact with patients, but there is very little evidence that they will be helpful
1:44 pm
in everyday life. if you have been coughing or have a high temperature oi’ coughing or have a high temperature orare coughing or have a high temperature or are short of breath, you may have symptoms of coronavirus, but you don't necessarily have coronavirus. if you that you may do, don't go anywhere, especially not the hospital, pharmacy or doctors. instead, phone your doctor. or use the online nhs one—on—one coronavirus service. they will be the ones you can tell you what to do next. all the latest advice, there. as you would expect, coronavirus was very much one of the topics under discussion during prime minister's questions. let's get more from our political editor norman smith. lots to talk about. yes, it was one of those rare days when i managed to accurately predict what was going to dominate pm cues, namely coronavirus
1:45 pm
and priti patel, although you wouldn't have to be mystic meg to work that one out. interesting the way borisjohnson unequivocally put his weight behind priti patel. even after the third set of allegations against her. here i have some representatives to get their thoughts. was it wise of boris johnson to so unequivocally support priti patel, given that there is an employment tribunal and an enquiry? clearly the sport was there because priti patel is doing a greatjob as home secretary, and she is carrying out manifesto pledges, and the prime ministers very pleased with that. any suggestion of any allegations will be investigated fully by the independent enquiry, and that is a
1:46 pm
separate issue, but i think it is absolutely key that we support people in these difficultjobs, and these are serious allegations. given we have now had three sets of allegations, would not have been sensible just to distance himself a bit, in case any of them are found to be true? clearly, the prime minister has absolute confidence that priti patel is doing a great job. i think that we shouldn't believe anybody until the allegations have been investigated, and it would be quite inappropriate to prejudge. kangaroo courts such as being conducted on the other side of the house does nothing, in a democratic institution. we hear from jeremy corbyn‘s office that he has received fresh allegations from other civil servants, including in the home office, about bullying. what can you tell us about that?”
1:47 pm
thinkjeremy was very right to highlight this at pmqs today, as you stated, one day after another, as she got more and more allegations, they have actually led to serious allegations of bullying or harassment, of actually belittling and bullying staff to the extent that it and bullying staff to the extent thatitis and bullying staff to the extent that it is done out in the open, that it is done out in the open, that they have been led to commit suicide, to attempt suicide, and by taking an overdose. that isjust not acceptable. i think it is also because of the immense bravery where they came to speak out, it's almost like a #metoo movement. the prime minister said there would be no bullying in parliament, so people across the country will be asking,
1:48 pm
is it one rule for hard—working people across the country and another for boris johnson and his ministers? we don't know the truth of these allegations, but is not pa rt of these allegations, but is not part of the problem the system of investigation that has been carried out by the cabinet secretary who then reverses thoughts to the prime minister, who, in the end, decides, but the prime minister is an interested party? of course, and any other situation it would be imperative that there is a separation between the investigation and the situation that is being investigated. that is basic hr practice, but that doesn't seem to be at all what is being suggested here. it is incumbent upon the prime minister to accept that there must be an independent enquiry into this, because the allegations are really serious. there is potentially a pattern of behaviour. if these allegations are proved to be correct, but we don't know if they will be proved to be correct because the enquiry that is being proposed is not fit for purpose. the really
1:49 pm
troubling recruitment practices have been going on with dominic cummings, and it doesn't give people confidence that this is a government which is doing the right thing, which is doing the right thing, which is doing the right thing, which is conducting itself appropriately and transparently, and people watching the country really deserve significantly people watching the country really deserve significa ntly better. people watching the country really deserve significantly better. the other issue is the coronavirus. are you satisfied that borisjohnson has set up enough detail about what he is going to do in his action plan? because it seems more to be a broad guide to what might follow, but there doesn't seem to be much detail. i am very satisfied. clearly it isa detail. i am very satisfied. clearly it is a moving story, none of us know, we are in the containment phase at the moment, and i would reiterate to everybody, washing hands is the way to contain this virus, and we have said that people need to go around their normal business at this moment in time. when we go to the next phase,
1:50 pm
everybody has been briefed on the house. they shouldn't be any cross—party issues on this, we all need to act responsibly for the sake of people that we represent, and it isa of people that we represent, and it is a countrywide issue, but i think we have been briefed and updated every day, and as things change, so to this change. does this meet the concerns that have been expressed by jeremy corbyn and some of the unions? we have got to work together, because we have got a global health crisis, but why has it taken labourand global health crisis, but why has it taken labour and others the highlight over the last few days that there is an inherent structural problem with statutory sick pay? why has it taken a global health crisis to highlight this? i'm sure widely
1:51 pm
across the country with the prime minister is not good with detail, so what we are worried about is that because we have a part—time for a minister he was absent in so many occasions and coronavirus, he decided he needed to chill out at the weekend before holding a meeting. that didn't actually happen until the following monday, and that was after immense pressure from many of us, and including those of us in the media, sol of us, and including those of us in the media, so i think he needs to grasp the gravity of the situations, and he needs to the detail himself. but he is out there now, we had a lengthy press conference from him yesterday, and i wonder if there is an issue for opposition politicians, because this is a national crisis. do you not have to rein in what might be your natural instinct to criticise and attack the government, because actually there is this is something that goes beyond party politics? i think, something that goes beyond party politics? ithink, actually, because it does go beyond party politics there is a very important role for
1:52 pm
those of us who are in opposition to be scrutinising, and to be doing everything that we can to make sure that things are done property, things are done fairly, and the people understand what this will mean for them. people understand what this will mean forthem. a people understand what this will mean for them. a really big issue that i don't think has at all then bottomed out is what will happen to people who are in receipt of benefits if they are self isolating? this is absolutely unclear from what the pro minister said. also, those who are on more precarious contracts will probably be a bit concerned, because it is not clear how this advice from borisjohnson because it is not clear how this advice from boris johnson will impact upon them, so detail is going to be important. it is vital that the shared important public health advice, and that is an important cross—party job advice, and that is an important cross—partyjob for us to do, but above and beyond that we do need to make sure that everyone is left with a very clear picture of what this means for them. thank you very much indeed. jane, it's funny, these pm keys, a pm queues discussion, we

used to spend a lot of time discussing brexit. nowadays you mention it. let's ta ke let's take a look at some other stories away from westminster and the virus and politics. the united states has carried out its first air strikes against the taliban in afghanistan since the two sides signed a peace deal on saturday. it was in response to an attack on afg ha n forces at was in response to an attack on afghan forces at a checkpoint. it came hours after president trump said he had a very good talk with a leader of the taliban. we had this up leader of the taliban. we had this up date from the capital campbell. the thing i think that is important to remember is that the agreement that was signed on saturday between the us and the taliban, officials were quite cautious they are not calling it a peace deal. it was the first phase of a deal, really, and that is, i think, because they anticipated, quite possibly, things
1:54 pm
like this happening, but there have been a number of attacks in the past few days by the taliban against afghan security forces. in response to that, as you say, in the southern province of helmand, us forces say they carried out their first air strike against the taliban in 11 days, targeting the taliban as they were assaulting a checkpoint. now, last week, in the lead up to the signing of this agreement between the us and the taliban, all sides of the conflict had agreed to a partial truce, and us and afghan officials had expected that partial truce to be extended, but, crucially, there was no mention of it, no mention of this partial truce in the agreement was signed, so it is not quite clear what this uptake and violence will mean for the peace process. us officials have said that it could present a risk to it, but there is not really any clarity, because we don't know
1:55 pm
exactly what the taliban are not meant to be doing. earlier this week, the taliban said that they were going to be carrying out attacks against afghan forces, not against international forces. all of this comes just a few hours after president donald trump spoke for potentially up to half an hour, according to the taliban, with the deputy leader of the group, and he said that he had had a good conversation with him. for afghans here, the situation is very, very unclear. no one really has a grip on what the agreement was in doha means for the situation on the ground. drivers in the uk could see a more equalfriendly drivers in the uk could see a more equal friendly petrol in garages from next year. the government is considering whether it should be the new standard petrol grade. the department for transport said it could reduce emissions from transport by 750,000 tonnes a year. but it is not compatible with some older vehicles. genesis are

1:57 pm
you can see how that rain dries out this evening and overnight many parts of england and wales become a lot drier but misty and murky in the hills, a lot of cloud and rain and we see rain in the english channel. where we have clear skies, we are likely to have a frost. maybe some icy patches and mist and fog early in the morning and sunshine on the way. for many other parts of england and wales, it will brighten up slowly. the rain continues to be heavy as it runs through the channel and heads to the south east corner of england where it remains into the afternoon. temperatures similar to delay, seven, eight degrees. we lose that area of low pressure bringing the rain through the channel and we see another week where the front arriving on friday, this is an area of showers. ahead it some s—10 fog patches. it is really showery and coming in slowly. in eastern

scotla nd coming in slowly. in eastern scotland it may be a dry day and temperatures of eight, 9 degrees. more significant changes during this weekend because winds will strengthen and we will find these weather systems coming in with an area of deeper low pressure. the winds will pick up slowly on the day on saturday, cloud amounts increasing from the west. drizzly rain across the hills, the persistent rain arriving later in the day. south to south—westerly winds will draw in milder air and temperatures reaching double figures in most parts of the country. that weather front could be heavy as it sweeps its way through. once that has gone on sunday morning, we change the wind direction. still windy on sunday, we are back into colder air and we were back into that mix of sunshine and showers.
