here's helen willetts. big contrasts in our weather today. we had a mild 15 between the showers today in the south, only 4 degrees in the north. that cold air is heading the way of the south as well. so, a distinctly chilly field tomorrow. lots of showers to come. so, that means with the cold air digging infrom so, that means with the cold air digging in from the north, as we approach with a north—westerly, it does me no showers will turn progressively to snow at lower levels as well through the night. we will find a showers easing a little in southern areas. but with a frost as well as the snow in the north overnight, it does mean that it is going to be quite icy in places, because no showers just keep coming on that brisk wind. so, concerns if you are travelling, notjust through tonight but tomorrow morning as well, that it could be quite treacherous with the ice and snow, particularly in the north, the snow blowing around in strong winds. the

warnings are on the website. the showers will get going in southern areas more quickly tomorrow. it will be the north and west once again bearing the brunt of the snow showers, just over 200 metres over the hills, hail and thunder about anywhere. sunshine in between, but a more brisk wind. as a result of a cold start and cold air, temperatures will be two or three degrees down, it will turn windy through the day, severe gales through the day, severe gales through southern scotland, northern ireland and northern england. that low pressure whisks away quite quickly, bringing strong wind into the north sea. then we have a ridge of high pressure building on friday. a quieter window of weather. it is worth pointing out that at the moment we still have over 100 flood warnings in force for scotland, england and wales. even the showers we are seeing today and tomorrow are not good news. more rain to come friday night. for the majority on friday, a drier day with lighter wind. not especially warm, but given sunshine and light wind it will feel that way in the march sunshine. strengthening now. there is more rain on the way for the weekend. not a wash—out. more strong wind, an

area of low pressure coming in off the atlantic. a reminder of our top story... the chancellor has unveiled a package to protect the economy from the impact of the coronavirus, promising the nhs would have whatever it needs. whether it is millions or billions of pounds, whatever it means and whatever it costs, we stand behind our nhs. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me , and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are.

6:36 pm
we'll be live at anfield shortly and a must—win champions league match for the european champions. and it's champion chase day at the festival, we'll also head live to cheltenham. good evening, we usually like to think of sportsday as your nightly half hour escape from the news, but there is no escape for sport at the moment. the coronavirus outbreak is having a daily impact, cancellations, postponements, special measures put in place. we'll speak to our correspondent natalie pirks at anfield in just a moment for a game that does go ahead, liverpool against atletico madrid in the champions league, but let's speak to our reporter adam wild with an update
6:37 pm
on how football especially has been affected. adam, we had the first game called off in the uk today, a highly significant moment you feel. tonight's premier league match between manchester city and arsenal. that was due to kick off in just a few minutes' time and it is the first premier league game to be postponed because of precaution about coronavirus, the first game in united kingdom. it is a particularly convoluted and complex story, the events leading up to this. this began when arsenal played olympiakos a fortnight ago. the olympiakos owner, he subsequently tested positive for coronavirus. as a result, if you arsenal players who had result, if you arsenal players who ha d co nta ct result, if you arsenal players who had contact with him during that match were put into isolation, as we re match were put into isolation, as were some of the backroom staff who sat in the vicinity of him during that match. we are not told which players they are, arsenal have told the bbc today there are fewer than
6:38 pm
five in isolation. they have not been tested because they have not shown any symptoms. that is why the game was called off. the premier league took the decision along with the two clubs. arsenal go to brighton on saturday. as it stands that match is going ahead because the two week isolation period will be up by then. the knock—on effect is that liverpool effectively cannot win the league this weekend. there was a certain scenario had manchester city lost this evening and lost again on saturday liverpool would have won the championship on saturday and they will not now do that. there are other clubs involved in this site become so complex. arsenal, since they played olympiakos, have played west ham and portsmouth as well so they have said today they are monitoring their players, as are nottingham forest, they have tested all their players because if the man who started all this, he also owns nottingham forest. it is a hugely complicated set of circumstances. wolves
6:39 pm
involved as well because they are due to play olympiakos. they asked for the game to be postponed given all of this but uefa said no and it goes ahead behind closed doors, showed socially what they're up against wear when one man tests positive it becomes hugely complex. in sport putting it in perspective. we have heard in the last few minutes, a seventh person has died in the uk. it really puts sport in perspective. more details of that later on bbc news throughout the course of the evening. getting back to european football in their approach to try to contain this outbreak, it has really been a blanket approach from them. italy first and all their difficulties with the outbreak in spain as well? what you see is a real lack of consistency and approaches across europe. the results of the europa league earlier, we heard that getafe
6:40 pm
we re league earlier, we heard that getafe were refusing to fly out to milan. they are saying, if we get kicked out of the competition so be it, we have to put the safety of our players first, that has been diffused because the game has been postponed. roma were due to play seville and their plane didn't get the relevant permissions to land, so that game has also been postponed. others are going ahead including manchester united, but behind closed doors. in terms of the league, we already know serie a has been suspended, spain and france are playing behind closed doors. there are been calls for the spanish league to be postponed in a similar way to italy, we understand talks are ongoing as regards that situation. in france the league cup final between psg and leon has also been postponed, so it is a really complex set of circumstances moving all the time and really no consistency in approach across europe. many thanks for the update.
6:41 pm
we will stay with that situation. the world player's union fifpro say some of their members don't want to play because of worries over the coronavirus. the organisations general secretary told me about the huge difficulty for the game at the moment with different approaches from country to country in trying to contain the outbreak it isa it is a very complicated situation. we are in constant exchange so that we can relay that to our members from whatever decision being made and that adds to the uncertainty that the players are experiencing. clearly, there are several, and the government advice needs to be number one but has expressed today, football needs to start taking into account the emotions in the family responses of players and the uncertainty that comes with many of our players, having expressed that they simply don't feel in the frame
6:42 pm
of mind, that they don't feel the protection they want to perform under the circumstances so it is very difficult. do you have members coming to you saying we just don't wa nt to coming to you saying we just don't want to play? absolutely. the players are concerned about travel, exposure, obviously there are tens of thousands of people and in some countries if that is the government advice we need to respect that but for the players it is a very u nsettled for the players it is a very unsettled situation and they are concerned about playing. some of his members are in action in liverpool tonight. let's get the latest from anfield, an 8 o'clock kick—off between liverpool and atletico madrid, natalie is there. natalie, the spanish government has advised against travel there for atletico fans, they've said it would be "irresponsible". i wonder how many will have taken that advice on board. well, it is lively here already
6:43 pm
tonight. we are expecting around 3000 madrid fans, or that is how many they thought would travel. we have seen a fair few, not as busy as i would have expected, so a little while to go until kick—off. the bizarre situation is that la liga is behind closed doors so atletico madrid fans cannot go and see their tea m madrid fans cannot go and see their team play at home but they can fly across europe and watch them here at anfield. the liverpool advices for fa ns to anfield. the liverpool advices for fans to practice good hygiene, no handshakes before the match. none of the mascots will be holding hands with the players and all those kinds of things. what is interesting is that liverpool fans congregate from all over the world as well so it is not just atletico madrid, all over the world as well so it is notjust atletico madrid, they all over the world as well so it is not just atletico madrid, they are flying in from scandinavia or ireland, and we caught up with a few fa ns ireland, and we caught up with a few fans earlier on. you may be able to hear from them now. if you don't get within a certain proximity i cannot see what the problem is. i think
6:44 pm
there is a bit of overreaction to there is a bit of overreaction to the whole coronavirus. football is nothing without supporters, you cannot play games behind closed doors. i have been at that level and you do not see and hear anything and thatis you do not see and hear anything and that is rubbish. came off at dublin and they had tickets but didn't want to take the chance. liverpool's defeat in madrid almost three weeks ago was just the start of that blip, a dip in form that saw them lose three out of four. they have to overturn that one goal deficit. they do, but remember what happened the last time the spanish side came here, the barcelona when we'll go down in liverpool history. don't expect atletico madrid to be as gung ho and perhaps arrogant as barcelona we re ho and perhaps arrogant as barcelona were that night. they are streetwise and they defend very well and are good on the counterattack and have won the ford of the last five knockout ties where they have won the first leg, butjuergen klopp has
6:45 pm
not lost here in any of their champions league matches, that is 15 matches. no alisson tonight with a hip injury but andy robertson is also back and it has as birthday today so it could be another of those special nights under the enfield lights. they usually are, thanks very much indeed. hanover defender timo hubers has contracted the virus and has been quarantined at home. the rest of the playing staff at the german second—tier side have been tested. three formula one team members at haas and mcalren have shown symptoms of the virus and are self isolating ahead of sunday‘ s australian grand prix. the new look fed cup finals, scheduled for next month in budapest, have been postponed because of the coronavirus. hungary have banned public gathering of more than a hundred people. no new date has been set. england lionesses play theirfinal game at the shebelieves cup this evening.
