president trump is extending a ban on flights from europe to include britain and ireland because of a spike in coronavirus infections. vice president mike pence has said the ban will come into effect at midnight on monday. now i'm bbc news, the coronavirus outbreak began in the chinese city of wuhan. which was locked down in late january. with exclusive access to two film—makers who have been capturing life under lockdown, here is our world. wuhan, central china, with a population of 11 million, it is bigger than greater london. this is where the coronavirus outbreak began, last december. injanuary, as it started spreading across china, the government took an unprecedented

the lockdown is a huge gamble to stop the spread of the virus to the rest of china by shutting off wuhan. residents do not know what it will do to infections within the city and there is no word on when it will end. two dozen people have already died. wuhan central hospital is the epicentre of the outbreak. it is under unprecedented strain.

after driving several doctors and nurses to work, lin drops in on his friend, lil lil. it is chinese new year. families often travel across the country to be together at chinese new year. the lockdown was implemented to avoid this epic movement of people and stop the spread of the virus beyond wuhan.

to solve the transport problem, the government organises buses and hotels for hospital staff, but doctors have struggled to understand the virus and protect themselves from it. many are becoming infected. cai takes his wife, li ting, to her shift in the emergency department. she is not feeling well. soon after, she calls him.

it has been over a week since the lockdown. new infections have grown by 500%. there are reports that people with the virus who have stayed at home are infecting their families and neighbours, and that some are dying in their homes but, with hospitals full, the self quarantine policy continues. li ting has now had the virus for five days. but her condition has worsened. cries.

10,000 wuhan residents have become infected in the last week. the two new mega hospitals have opened. sports stadiums and conference halls have been converted into giant mass—confinement centres. everyone suspected of having coronavirus now has to be in hospital. only a country with china's command system could react this fast. lin wenhua is helping to deliver medicine. although there is currently no cure, the government has advised that hiv drugs may help ease the symptoms.

cai desperately calls the hospitals asking for an available place but no luck. in bed, li ting speaks to him by phone in the next room. the next day, li ting is finally admitted to hospital. lin has now driven over 1000 miles around wuhan. there are thought to be up to 50,000 volunteers like him. it is a lifeline for the city. but they are exposing themselves to extreme risk.

in a bid to self isolate, residents have cut off the entrance to their district. the lockdown has slowed the spread to the rest of china. but in just one month, nearly 50,000 people have become infected in wuhan. now, the government escalates the lockdown. it orders every residential complex must close its gates. cai goes to pick up a delivery.

hello there. in the longer term the weather is set to change. a much needed area of high pressure will bring us some dry weather. but that's longer term. shorter term, early next week it'll be a cold start and then we've got some rain in the north—west that will stagger down across the uk. now we've already seen some rain for the first half of the weekend, that weather front bringing some wetter and windier weather and the main rain band on sunday on that weather front is moving towards the south—east of the uk. still some heavy rain for a time.

once that clears though we get some sunshine, there will be some sunshine, particularly in scotland and northern ireland but the shower become fewer through the day. but with change in the wind direction to more of a north—westerly so it would feel cooler, with temperatures down to around eight to 10 degrees come the afternoon. and those temperatures will continue to drop away during the evening as the showers continue to fade. we've got clearing skies, still some rain to clear away from that far south east corner, so not quite as chilly here. but with high pressure, or at least a nose of high pressure building on overnight into early monday, clear skies and light winds means monday will probably start frosty for many parts of the country but there will be some sunshine too. now the weather is likely to change in the north—west. the winds pick up, cloud increasing and mainly during the afternoon we'll start to see that rain coming into scotland and northern ireland. england and wales, probably going to be dry during the day. after a cold start there will be sunshine and temperatures are a reasonable ten to 12 degrees. now that weather front that's bringing the rain in the north west is causing a few headaches for the early part of next week, because it gets so far and then it

stops and starts to move northwards again because there is a little wave on that front too. so we may see a bit of cloud and rain down towards north england and north wales and then the main rain comes back toward scotland and northern ireland. further south and east across england and wales it may well be dry and there'll be a bit more warmth as well, because the winds are going back to a south westerly. so 15 or even 16 degrees should feel quite pleasant. those south—westerly winds come ahead of the weather front there and during the night, that weather front starts to move southwards away from scotland and northern ireland so we'll start to see it getting colder but brighter here, with some showers that could be wintry over the hills in the north of scotland. there is our main rain band. it's cloud and patchy rain coming into england and wales and ahead of it, south—westerly winds it's still going to be quite mild in the south—east where temperatures could reach 17 or even 18 degrees. but that's going to be short lived because whilst there may be much

rain on the weather front, in move southwards, introduces colder air again as we change to a north—westerly wind. and there will be some showers coming on as well, mainly to scotland and northern ireland. snow over the hills. some showers making their way into england and wales but further south it may well be dry with some sunshine. those temperatures are back down to around eight to 11 celsius on thursday. now let's look at the longer range forecast. got some city forecasts for you here. the main thing you notice, dry. second thing, not that warm and overnight as well, perhaps the risk of some frost around too. high pressure, that's going to be dominating for the outlook. now, for a while there may be a few showers coming down the north sea and they could continue in a cool wind down the south—east of england if we end up with the area of low pressure over continental europe. the main thing is high pressure is going to be around, it's going to dry things off but it won't be particularly warm.
