11:30 pm
this is bbc world news. the headlines... more than 50,000 people have now died in the us from coronavirus. meanwhile president trump has backtracked on a suggestion yesterday that disinfectant, could be used to tackle the virus. the uk government website for key workers to apply for coronavirus tests has reopened for bookings, after it was closed due to "significant demand". the governement aims to meet a target of 100,000 daily tests by the end
11:31 pm
of april. world leaders and the who have launched a global initiative to accelerate work on drugs to treat coronavirus. the head of the who says the biggest health effort in history is needed to rid world of covid 19. president trump has signed a bill that injects another 500 billion us dollars into the coronavirus economic relief package. it brings the total federal spending for the coronavirus crisis to $2.7 trillion. welcome to the papers — with me are claire cohen, the women's editorfor the daily telegraph and benedicte paviot, the uk correspondent for
11:32 pm
france 24. we will bring them both and in a moment but first a quick look at some of the front page as we will be looking at. in the uk, the financial times weekend edition looks at how china dealt with the coronavirus and how pressure on testing in the uk overwhelms a government website the daily mail says that britons could be allowed to socialise with up to ten of their closest family and friends in order to ease the lockdown. the independent asks whether different approaches to easing the lockdown may lead to a fracturing of the united kingdom. the daily telegraph suggests businesses are being secretly advised on plans to get britons back to work and to restart the economy. and the sun says that premier league football could be back within weeks, with plans to televise all games and play matches behind closed doors. the guardian leads with the revelation that borisj0hnson‘s chief political adviser,
11:33 pm
dominc cummings, is on the scientific group advising the govenrment on the pandemic, despite having no science background... and the express says that the home secretary will make a plea to those flouting social—dstancing rules after alarm at the number of people breaking lockdown measures. let's start now. that first page of the daily telegraph and talk here and of business is being told that it is back to work. scientists telling ministers the lifting of the lockdown could get under way by the middle of may but i am assuming if it does happen it will be an extremely slow process. you would think so wouldn't you? this comes ahead of boris johnson think so wouldn't you? this comes ahead of borisjohnson returning to work on monday and trying to take back control of the narrative i think. this comes after a week when we have been told that things like
11:34 pm
car usage and visits to shops have gone up and there is a sense that it is the government taking the public along with it but the other way around. it is clear we do need some sort of place to return to work however so that might be. to boost the economy and learned to live alongside the pandemic i guess instead of hiding from it. but the language used in these briefings have been very vague you would not be surprised to hear. the story says that ministers spoke to business owners but what does that really mean? and they say that firms might have been over interpreting the social distancing measures but is it no wonder when we have been bombarded with stay home or work from home where you will die or kill other people. and there is no clear plan to get back to work stop id field there have been next message
11:35 pm
is here? yes, even today that some shops were closed even though they did not need to, according to matt hancock. whether it is one person 50 or thousands, they need to have clarity, you need to plan. you cannotjust say clarity, you need to plan. you cannot just say you are opening tomorrow. and i think it is absolutely crucial, of course the main message is stay at home, stay safe and social distancing but it is vital. it is notjust a sanitary crisis as we all know now, it is an economic one and in order to prepare for the after or in between or certainly less of a lockdown, there needs to be absolute clarity and thatis needs to be absolute clarity and that is sometimes lacking. it could be because borisjohnson obviously for health reasons needed to stay away. it will
11:36 pm
be interesting to see. dominic cummings is back from last week and it will be interesting to see what difference if boris johnson comes back on monday, how different that will be not just when he comes back on monday, how different that will be notjust when he reads briefings but from the core message and the preparations as nicola sturgeon, the first minister and the first minister of wells have been doing. it is notjust policing like you have said but lockdown by consent. let's talk about this story, home testing kits running out and 120 seconds. part of coming out of lockdown is going to include increased testing. the government has set a target of 100,000 tests by the end of the month and this website by key workers and their families were meant to go some way to get the government towards that amount of tasks but it ran into a few problems, and said? it is not off great to start. i am sure they
11:37 pm
will be delighted that it was still inundated by people and 116,000 tried to book appointments but of course he cannot handle it and it was overwhelmed. even though you thought you might have prepared for it and crashed all the way to the top line. and within two minutes because it was all booked up. but there is 10 million key workers and all wanting tests, and any of home will show symptoms and also the other big question around these tests is an emergent today, no actual proof being required. and it suggests some key workers might miss out in the government says that they are taking it on good faith which suggests to me they are focused on hitting this 100,000 target and want to get people tested and asked we were so. some will wonder why these tests
11:38 pm
we re some will wonder why these tests were not made of that sooner?‘ some will wonder why these tests were not made of that sooner? a lot of people are asking that question andl of people are asking that question and i think despite the daily briefings and we are really getting daily briefings and we have had them from various ministers, some more frequently than others because they are frequently than others because they a re clearly frequently than others because they are clearly better performers than others and i think also matt hancock, but clearly there has not beenin hancock, but clearly there has not been in that capacity and what is interesting about that 100,000 target as we learn in this article it is not... we learn from chris lady earlier today, it is not based oi'i lady earlier today, it is not based on scientific advice but the government having put out that message or a matt hancock putting out that message they are racing to try to meet that 100,000 target while not spending any time explaining as i wasjust saying
11:39 pm
previously how, if not when but how some of the measures that nicola sturgeon has even if it was basically starting on the journey and explaining what we could realistically expect. it is interesting when we will come back to that and in france, they have not always got things right but they have began the journey and they already have a date and we think we know we are ten days behind france as faras know we are ten days behind france as far as the pandemic is concerned that the figures are not that different. let's remember we are close to 20,000 deaths in hospital and to about 7000 or 7500 and more in residential care. and other things, all the individual stories we are hearing, i think we all some people know who are very closely affected by this pandemic. financially, personally and
11:40 pm
friends, colleagues, it is a very new reality and we need to address that new reality. and to let you know that my producer has said in my ear that the website at the moment for capacity has been reached today but whoever wa nts to has been reached today but whoever wants to get on the website will probably want to know that. moving on to the independent, this united kingdom, will it fracture the uk. and this is basically talking about approaches to england, wales and scotla nd approaches to england, wales and scotland and in particular what that means if restrictions remain in england and how different happy approaches and? and how people think about the three nations? we were talking about one nation and we were talking about one nation and we were talking about one nation and we were talking about nicola sturgeon about
11:41 pm
the framework for taking scotland out of lockdown. but this is something obviously we have not seen in england sell at the start of this conversation about three nations, and this framework she was suggesting may these divisions with itself, this has been a conversation that has been mentioned as well and ido that has been mentioned as well and i do not think anybody really could expect that somewhere like london could come out of lockdown restrictions in the same way that rural areas would do. but there is this sense of fracturing now and arlene foster was saying this morning, she made a point of saying that she would not take northern ireland out of lockdown any sooner without the approval of number ten. but it is not beyond the realm of the imagination to think she would wa nt to the imagination to think she would want to do that sooner. so it could fracture that nation. but how will
11:42 pm
that work quickly with difficulty andi that work quickly with difficulty and i think all four nations know that. i think this increases any more of a pressure, of the testing, to wear a mask or not to wear a mask and way to get your test and i think now there is, could one nation, it is like a race it seems and i think the fracture at a time when actually countries in the world needs to be much more united is quite revealing andi much more united is quite revealing and i think in a sense, i do not wa nt to and i think in a sense, i do not want to push the analogy too much but it's a fracture anyway in the united kingdom where, may ijust say something that happened today and it isa something that happened today and it is a very regular reviewer of... are former bbc watchdog presenter who i have done reviews and
11:43 pm
i am sure claire has, there is a sense of sadness that we lost somebody who wasjust a sterling sadness that we lost somebody who was just a sterling journalist and a fantastic campaigner and i could not go fantastic campaigner and i could not go through this paper review and not pay tribute to her and wish the best of her family. absolutely, yes. her son and her husband. she suffered a massive stroke i believe and passed away quite suddenly at the age of 72 so we do pass on our condolences. she was a regular contributor on the papers here on bbc news and one of our favourites and a wonderful woman and consumer rights activists. thank you very much for that. let's move on to daily express. i want to bring you and, the headline talking about priti patel warning again selfish rule breakers. it seems a little
11:44 pm
bit that this whole lockdown fatigue is starting to take over a little bit in the uk, the hot weather is not helping. do you think people who are breaking the rules right now i thinking along the lines of the numbers are diminishing and i can do what i want? i am not so sure it is ican do what i want? i am not so sure it is i can do what i want but i think people are hearing in the daily press briefings talking of the spread rate being below one which keeps being reiterated and the rhetoric about the sombrero having been squashed and people are likely thinking that we had this under control and without a plan in place or how lockdown might be eased, it is little wonder they are starting to think that might take things into their own hands and disillusion with their own hands and disillusion with the government is increasing over it. the approval rating i think has fallen six or 7%. and it will
11:45 pm
continue to drop week after week. do you agree with that, is that why people are starting to feel slightly more relaxed about things? yes, i think it is. this is testing a lot of people's willpower, their mental health and home—schooling which i am not having to do but i think is a real challenge. there is no let up, i was reading an article earlier today on how worklife balance has really gone out the window. and the parents are being parents and teachers and many things, nannies and besides it is very testing and yet we know the british public think actually, understand the need for a longer lockdown. as i said before, they need to be spoken to i think any more
11:46 pm
clear, direct way. i think that some are quite good at doing that some are quite good at doing that but it will be basically boyce johnson has a very tough job and he's going to come back to a virtual parliament, new opposition leader who did an excellent plea and cues on wednesday and a very different world and it will be interesting to see the fact that he has had this illness quite badly, how that affects his decisions on some level. also the fact that he has got his companion, his fiancee who is pregnant and who will also rely on nhs, by whom borisjohnson pregnant and who will also rely on nhs, by whom boris johnson also was sick. the election, doesn't it feel incredibly far away and i think the fa ct incredibly far away and i think the fact that the general election was ran in such a presidential weight which britain is in, he is a prime
11:47 pm
minister not the head of state, that is the queen. i think it really has been extraordinary for him not to be at the forefront of this battle, i will not call it a war but it was after all the biggest plague, pandemic and a century and a century ago they did not have 24 hour news channels, social media and the speed with which information travel which has effects on shares, airlines, shopping and all kinds of things. so, it will be really interesting andl so, it will be really interesting and i wonder what briefings boris johnson has been getting and how he will reenter the forefront of his job and in british politics at this extraordinarily breast to pressing time. cheese ten lockdown friends and family, ministers are looking at whether it's district stay—at—home advice and let small groups of
11:48 pm
households clustered together, almost like bt‘s friends and family scheme, you would name friends and family and you would get a discount on calling them, apparently government ministers are considering allowing you to social stomach socialise with these ten people. de think this is going to happen?” thought this was we are all in this together instead of picking favourites. but there is nothing that says they have to choose you back. it would not be beyond the realms of possibility. who would you pick if you could? i think phoebe would be the top of my list. what about you, your ten friends and family? two or three of my closest nearest and dearest and of course
11:49 pm
my parents, my brother and parents. certainly, can i include a dog? you can include any pet that you like.” would love to have a dog but i do not believe that kind of life —— do not believe that kind of life —— do not let that kind of life. injecting a disinfectant into your veins and carrying you of coronavirus. from donald trump, it costs a lot of alarm. disinfecting companies coming out and say do not and just ask. incredible times. isn't it extraordinary that in 2020 we are having companies tell us not to ingest disinfectants? this is beyond the realms of ridiculous and too dangerous. and we just saw donald trump ahead of this programme getting a briefing and
11:50 pm
that was as conciliatory as he ever gets. lots of talk on home testing kits and the safety a nd of talk on home testing kits and the safety and validity of those but i am afraid that does nothing to wash away when he said last night. he said tonight the world is watching us said tonight the world is watching us but they really are now because this has made international headlines all day. every expert from here to eternity coming out and calling it dangerous advice. the point being that ingesting bleach will kill coronavirus and not be able to have it any more.” will kill coronavirus and not be able to have it any more. i like what you did there, and very briefly the last story, at london marathon was due to take place on sunday but i'm not sure whether either of you are signed up for it. i did my one and only marathon and that was last year. i do not know if i will do another one. i would love to think that i am going to that this is
11:51 pm
a story that there may only be eight runners but that is not in the spirit of the london marathon. think they should just cancel the whole thing and just have next years in april? how are they meant to do it. sponsor is, a big raise. the reality is that nobody apart from god knows where we will be at that time so it is a horrendous dilemma andl time so it is a horrendous dilemma and i actually quite like the 2.6 miles and the fact that we are all in this together in that sense. there is no way of planning this.” think it is incredibly insulting, there are 40,000 runners who have been training for this for months and raising money for it and obviously it is really crashing for them that they cannot run it may not be able to run it october now. the point is this is the biggest charitable fundraising date and it rose stomach raise
11:52 pm
66 million pounds for charities at the moment and to say that people break that hard to help charities that meant a lot to them that they cannot run it leaves a bitter taste when they are asked to do this 2.6 challenge and the gardens at home and raising more money. has been a pleasure to have both of you on the programme. thank you for yourinput you on the programme. thank you for your input this evening. thank you forjoining us for the papers this hour. thanks again, sport is coming up in a couple minutes so stay with us. goodbye. hello. this is the latest for you from the bbc split to export centre. there will be no cricket until at

concept even an atmosphere of declining revenues. is certainly going to make as i guess less able to invest in the areas at the game that we wanted to. but the hundred is something that is there as something that is going to generate revenue, it is going to generate interest and excitement. and that is the kind of project we need to continue to prioritise. try to get some cricket played this year, there are unprecedented concepts, how about counties paying onto 0ctober in the middle east. there is possibility of extending the season and you would look at that and consider that. both of those countries are used to being a neutral venue. we had known them while. at that as a possibility we wa nt to while. at that as a possibility we want to see the season out, then i would say that as an option worth pursuing. when or if cricket

11:57 pm
after another predominantly dry week for most parts of the uk, the weekend promises and plenty more dry weather. but slow subtle changes and the increasing chance of catching a shower and it will begin to feel cooler across northern areas. nothing much is changing very quickly at the moment because the pressure pattern is very slack. not many white lines at all on this chart. not many isobars. that means winds are very light. nothing to push the weather along. we start off the day with a lot of cloud across eastern scotland and eastern side of england and misty conditions in place. that should tend to break up the mist and fog should lift and all of us get to see spells of sunshine. perhaps a bit more cloud than we had over the last couple of days. temperature wise, 17 to 21 degrees. a bit coolerfor some northern and eastern coasts. northern ireland also having a cooler day and as we go into the late afternoon in the evening, wales and the southwest could see a shower, and the early hours of sunday, generally more cloud rolling in across the north of scotland.
11:58 pm
those are your overnight temperatures. most places above freezing and it will be a little bit chilly across some parts of england. we go to sunday and this area of low pressure quite a weak affair, it starts to move its way in from the north, that does increase the chance of seeing some showers across northern parts of scotland, a frontal system pushing south and a band of cloud and some showers possible with that and ahead of it across the heart of england and wales we could see the odd heay shower into the afternoon but there will still be a lot of dry weather and sunshine and another warm day down towards the south but noticably cooler across the northern half of the country. and into monday you see the cold air making some inroads southwards, lower temperatures for most parts on monday, a band of cloud and frontal system sitting around parts of england and wales and the odd splash of rain but we could see slightly more significant werr weather developing down to the south later in the day, 21 degrees in
11:59 pm
london but the further north you are, a much cooler feel to the weather. and for all of us, it is going to turn cooler as we head deeper into next week. and the increasing chance of some rain and some fairly brisk winds as well. that is all from me for now.
