11:30 pm
it comes as british airlines call for clarity — after plans are announced for a 14—day quarantine for passengers arriving to the uk. "an absolute chaotic disaster" — donald trump is described by the former us president, barack obama, of the coronavirus pandemic. russia marks the 75th anniversary of the end of world war ii — but without the planned red square parade of soldiers and veterans. but belarus holds a full victory parade with huge crowds, and no regard for social distancing. music and the pioneer of rock and roll, little richard dies aged 87.
11:31 pm
hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are benedicte paviot — uk correspondent for france 2a, and joe twyman, director of polling at the polling organisaton deltapoll. welcome to you both. tomorrow's front pages... starting with. .. the leaders of the four largest trade unions in the uk have written a letter published in tomorrow's observer — warning the prime minister that they won't recommend their members return to work until there has been a radical overhaul of workplace health and safety. in the sunday mirror — medical professionals warn that that there could be fatal flaws in the uk's track and trace app because there's too much emphasis on a cough and fever — missing other symptoms. the daily mail reports on what they call a ‘furious‘ row between the prime minister and health secretary, matt hancock, over the handling of the coronavirus crisis. while the sunday telegraph leads on the government's new stay alert slogan — with a five—tier warning system used to indicate the virus threat — to be unveiled tomorrow. and a warning against easing lockdown restrictions too soon
11:32 pm
in the sunday times — with a government adviser warning an early lifting could lead to 100,000 deaths in the uk. the express reports that the prime minister will use his address to the nation tomorrow night to ‘show resolve‘ and continue with the lockdown measures. and the sunday people has a stark warning on care homes — saying they are under financial pressure and on the ‘brink of collapse‘ so let‘s begin... let‘s start with the sunday telegraph. this new stay alert warning, the prime minister‘s new message to the nations which will hear more about our sunday evening. not as clear though as the one we have been used over the previous weeks, stay at home. absolutely. this represents an evolution of the government messaging. we started with stay at home, but that the nhs and save lives come a very clear and unambiguous message. we are now moving to stay alert, control the virus, save lives. but of course the difficulty for people at home is how
11:33 pm
you interpret stay alert. because stay at home is very much a binary measure. you either stay at home or not staying at home. the staying alert, what does that mean? how other do you have to be aware worship processes? the government is clearly hoping that this creative ambiguity will allow a more gradual move away from the type restrictions that we‘ve have seen. but the risk from a distance that i am many of the papers tonight, the risk is that if things move too fast, if the restrictions are loosing too much, and if too many people start going about their normal lives as before, then we could see a fatally high rise in the all—important r value, more people will be affected which inevitably leads to more deaths. and thatis inevitably leads to more deaths. and that is indicated very much on the sunday times. 100,000 dead if uk eases too fast. scientists warned. we are told that as much as every
11:34 pm
death would be tragic, if we can give the numbers of deaths down to 20,000, that would be a good result according to government advisers but we are now 831 thousand already. and a half thousand, which actually is the worst if not in the eu. —— 31 25,000. the worst in europe. france hasjust over 26,000. it is very worrying for of course what all come with it is the british government, french, italian, spanish, greek, governments, german, all be very mindful of is the potential of this second wave. we have seen some spikes locally in germany and what i think is interesting in this stay alert control the virus and save lives is the fact that we are now going to get people did like the analogy much about a war, but it is actually in some ways one should not
11:35 pm
overdo the analogy but it is a war against certainly a very dangerous virus. —— do not like the analogy. there will be a five tier one access and which i think is interesting because that is very much what we have done a terror threat level. but i also think it's interesting is his new body that will be created understand, the joint bio—security centre. which effectively i think is a disease version of the british intelligence agency, gchq. and that will be able importantly or his mission is amongst other things to detect local spikes and i think it will be interesting to watch a country like france, which will officially going to like them on monday, much trepidation and france as in other countries about a possible second spike, and 0b interesting to see what happens there and france is divided into reds on the green zone, red very much staying in the lockdown, green
11:36 pm
not. what will be interesting is the five tier, one green potential for easing the lockdown, red very much like the terror system, the high as you can get. at the moment i think the prime minister is going to warn us the prime minister is going to warn us on the prime minister is going to warn us on sunday in a 7pm ijust did the nation that britain is teetering on the verge of 34. so very much danger not of the danger zone for the united kingdom at all. and that is something i think that nicola sturgeon, the first minister, she has made a very clear that there is i'io has made a very clear that there is no lockdown insight at the moment. and that seems to be an appetite in the polling is that british public are in favour of the lockdown continuing for three weeks but after another three weeks, i think that would be very difficult for him it would be very difficult for him it would seem as things currently stand. let's look at the sunday times. the queen is set to leave the public stage for several months. at 94 years of age. she is in the category of people who need to keep shielding. yes. absolutely. she is
11:37 pm
well aware of the situation but of course it is notjust her. it is the duke of edinburgh as well, it was 99 yea rs duke of edinburgh as well, it was 99 years old. with many pre—existing health conditions. but the queen is a lwa ys health conditions. but the queen is always said she needs to be seen to be believed and she feels that having a public presence is very important, not just her coming having a public presence is very important, notjust her coming to the whole constitution of the monarchy generally. i think we will see more of the kind of public state m e nts see more of the kind of public statements that previously have been very rare. we will see more of those as she is not able to make the kind of public appearances that she thinks is possible and i also think she will concentrate more on playing the role of the grandmother of the nation rather than somebody who is seen to be complaining about which one of her many very large houses she has to stay in for some progress to the sunday mirror frontpage. coronavirus exclusive, makes a fatal flaw and trace and track. it
11:38 pm
concentrates on too few symptoms. yes, the trace and track app has been piloted in the alibi currently. as pa rt of been piloted in the alibi currently. as part of that process, you have to go through the app to record the symptoms. bash isle of wight. he talks about the kind of symptom that affect people suffering from the virus. the latest problem that has been suggested in the mirror is that those conditions, those list of symptoms are not substantial enough. because we know that this virus affects people in lots of different ways. someone may very well have the virus come and get does not have the kind of symptoms that are mentioned in the app become so it has not requested to get the test and so the problem carries on. this is the latest in a series of questions that have been raised about this app, whether it works on all mobile phones whether or not people will download it and actually use it for it to be useful, and now whether it
11:39 pm
can be useful even when downloaded. but of course this is the reason why you have pilots. and i imagine the nss and the team will be working from the heart to make sure that by the time it is rolled out nationally, the source of questions and kinks and other issues will be ironed out. —— nhs. and kinks and other issues will be ironed out. -- nhs. the two stories i want to look at on the sunday telegraph, deleted very nicely onto the one of the sunday mail, the fact that laboratories using uk forth to bridge government to send thousands of virus tested the united states for processing, £16 million of goggles have been made kemal —— all leading to pressure matt hancock was mea leading to pressure matt hancock was me a break, he says, and a break, he says, and he blessed with the prime minister. whole course was away for several weeks because he was ill himself. indeed. it is notjust a queen who will be absent in the coming months. we had a very absent prime minister who clearly became
11:40 pm
very ill and we are told by him almost died. so these are very embarrassing revelations in the sunday telegraph. laboratories issues, this government warning, so tens of thousands of tests, we knew there were problems, there was that test capacity if not carried out, that was much prepared and vomited and promoted by the health secretary every sit on the day i think from 122,000. but the word here is britain has been secretly flying tens of thousands of coronavirus test to america and this is to lift that daily testing rate to over 100,000 a day but the prime minister only days ago said he wanted to get to 200,000, possibly even 250,000, so this is very embarrassing and enslaved people have not been having test back results within hours, which is
11:41 pm
actually invisible. that's it why people. but actually days after. this poses a health concern and aspirate the tiger eye goggles, and i'iow aspirate the tiger eye goggles, and now it turns out are not safe enough for front line and hsf. this is extremely serious. but he gets political as well. both in the mail and on sunday and the sunday telegraph there is a very clear finger being pointed at someone. a former government a labour government, that of gordon brown in 2009, that apparently is being accused of being responsible for this because that is the government under which these were actually ordered. as for matt hancock, some sources of ordered. as for matt hancock, some sources of course anonymous ordered. as for matt hancock, some sources of course anonymous say he is on borrowed time. that he had a furious blessed with the prime minister who had previously praised him on reaching that 100,000 target. so clearly all is not well without wanting to use a pine but this is a
11:42 pm
very critical time for the prime minister tomorrow night on sunday night and at 7pm reentry come and address to the nation. people are getting really need leadership and we have seen the previous paper review about unions needing a nationwide health and safety. people need to be reassured that it is safe to go back to work. even if they are encouraged to stay at home or to stagger their way, encouraged to stay at home or to staggertheirway, healthily, to work. but this will be very complex and let's look at other countries and let's look at other countries and see what the united kingdom can learn from those of the country. with regard to those test being sent to the united states, the department of health and social care had issued a statement saying that the expansion of the uk coronavirus testing is involve setting up an entirely new lighthouse lab network to process test swab. when problems arise we have contingencies in place which include creating extra temporary capacities for our lives are sending swabs are brought to
11:43 pm
partner left for completion. of course our partner labs must match our high standards. 0ne course our partner labs must match our high standards. one final thought on this pressure on matt hancock. he is the great survivor. he has ministered to find a place in cabinets under various leaders. that she has managed to find. and i think the ppe and testing are really pressing concerns. the ppe and testing are really pressing concerns. i think the more general problem of arguments with in cabinet, iam general problem of arguments with in cabinet, i am certain that they happen all the time. particularly at moments like this and particularly all times. i imagine this will simply be the latest bus up that happens within the cabinet and i imagine we have many more still to come. “ imagine we have many more still to come. -- bust up. several other are saying in a letter that has published in the observer that they will not get their members to return to work until they feel safe. ——
11:44 pm
several unions are saying. they need a workplace revolution in terms of health and safety. that is right. much—maligned term, health and safety which is become a byword for bureaucracy and jobs worth if that isa bureaucracy and jobs worth if that is a word. 0ver bureaucracy and jobs worth if that is a word. over the last decade or so. it is not very much promoted by the tuc who have made it clear that they do not want their members. —— it is now very much with that they don‘t want their members put at risk by the health situation that the pandemic present so they want measures put in place to ensure that the people are as safe to go back to work and at the right time. the question is whether they will offer their support to whatever plan the government puts forward. because if they do, that will be a big boost for the government and public opinion terms and if they do not come it is a stick which opponents of the government from all sides can beat them with. jobs worth is now a
11:45 pm
word. the receipt paper is contributing to the growing english. that should be bc papers. a lovely to see both. it is a treat to be back here with you. thank you both very much forjoining us. that is it for the papers this hour. coming up next, the film review. hello and welcome to the film review with me, mark kermode, rounding up the best new movies available for viewing in the home.
