in with their parents, it looks like they could be living in a house—share for a lot longer than they would have expected. ben hunte, bbc news, manchester. as we've heard, people in england can now take unlimited amounts of exercise as part of the easing of the lockdown. that includes playing a round of golf or a game of tennis. of course they'll have to follow social distancing guidelines. katie gornall has more. you won't have heard this for a while. across england, the sounds of a sporting summer are gradually returning. this morning, this county durham tennis club welcomed its members for the first time in a long time. it's a big family. it is difficult being at home, and there's only so much that you can do. i hadn't been, like, playing in, like, ages. it's been really, really good. these are the first tentative steps that some recreational sports are taking to reopen across england, but it's far from business as usual. clubs have had to adapt and put restrictions in place,
6:31 pm
like closing clubhouses, in order to keep people safe. we tried to anticipate most of situations that might arise, and it's all gone out in instructions to all members as to what conditions they have to adhere to in order to be able to come back and play their tennis. after weeks of lockdown, fishing clubs can also reopen. and outdoor basketball courts can now be used, a welcome sight for the butler family in teesside. it is way better than just doing workouts at home like i have been doing to keep fit. it's great to be back on the court. it's really important to note that with the exception of outdoor swimming pools, these new guidelines relate to every single sport outdoors as long as the guidelines are closely followed. the updated guidance allows you to play with one other person from outside your household as long as you socially distance, which means at this golf course in altrincham, sport is bring families back together. i've missed my friends, i've missed social contact, i've missed talking to my brother. and i'm really looking
6:32 pm
forward to playing golf. i've been a member of this club for a long time, over 50 years, and to get together again and get out on the golf course is fantastic. in these strange times, sport is giving many a chance to recover a bit of normality. time to get back into the swing of things. no pressure. katie gornall, bbc news. is it sporting weather? time for a look at the weather here's darren bett. it will turn unusually cold again tonight, today the cloud has been bubbling up but it is thin cloud, so through this evening it will tend to melt away and the skies are will tend to melt away and the skies a re clear will tend to melt away and the skies are clear overnight and the winds will drop so temperatures fall away quickly. the exception is across northern scotland where we have more cloud and eventually some showery rain pushing in as well. but away from here we have a bit more blue on the charts, particularly in rural areas, those temperatures are likely to be just below freezing. many areas tomorrow will start cold but it will be bright and sunny, the
6:33 pm
cloud and showers in scotland will move southwards, eventually arriving into northern ireland. england and way is likely to stay dry, again the cloud bubbling up and spreading out a bit but still some sunshine at times. a chilly wind may pick up again across southern parts of england but temperatures may reach 16 degrees. on the whole those numbers a degree or two higher than today. the cloudier air pushes southwards overnight and into friday, so sunshine will be rather more limited. we are likely to find a few showers, mainly for northern and western scotland. probably the best sunshine across southern parts of england and where is after a chilly start. temperatures here could get as high as 17 or 18 degrees. as we head into the weekend, we are starting to tap into some warmer air that's coming in from the atlantic. there is a wind direction change to more of a south—westerly. so still some very cold are not far away from the north of scotla nd cold are not far away from the north of scotland and where those two air masses clash you get these two weather fronts developing bringing in an increasing chance of rain but we still have high pressure across
6:34 pm
southern parts of the uk. it will be warmer across the uk day and night, higher temperatures in the south where it is likely to be dry with some sunshine. northern areas, some patchy rain is likely particularly on sunday. george. that's all from the bbc news at six. on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are. goodbye.
6:35 pm
hello and welcome along to sportsday with me sarah mulkerrins. today has seen the return of recreational sport for many people in england. as lockdown measures have eased — some games — with strict social distancing rules — were able to return, like tennis. after two months of hibernation — maybe the thought of some pretty cold water, wouldn't put you off open water swimming. and we know many golf clubs have had
6:36 pm
big demands in booking a tee—time. now, while there are big benefits for people's physical and mental well being — caution is still being urged in order to control the spread of the virus. sally nugent spent the morning at a golf club in manchester. so at a golf club in manchester. we have seen some n amateur so we have seen some return to amateur sports in england today. golf clubs like this one have reopened for their members, but under very very strict guidelines. i know lots of the clubs have been working hard to try to keep their members as safe as possible. this clu b members as safe as possible. this club here just outside manchester, chris is on the executive community, hi, chris. i know you have got a very strict set of rules for members to make sure that when they do come and play golf, things aren't normal, are they? things are very different. what are the rules? things are very different. so we have written down rules yet and we have told the rules, but the simple thing to observe is the practical application for this is keep your distance. so
6:37 pm
in the car park, keep your distance. the clubhouse is shocked, the bar is shot. the toilets are open. hand sanitiser everywhere. that's on the social side of things. once you get on the course, you can only play with two of you, normally, there will be three or four guys on every tea at this time of day, but it's just two balls, if you are in a buggy like those guys are, that guy is, so it's one guy in a buggy. if it's two people in a buggy, you have to be from the same family. if you are lucky enough that your ball has gonein are lucky enough that your ball has gone in the whole, when you retrieve it to me make sure you don't touch the flag, and we have designed these special discs, so your ball doesn't drop. how much you miss playing? you need to ask my wife and the family about that. i've missed it enormously. not just about that. i've missed it enormously. notjust hitting the ball, but actually just enormously. notjust hitting the ball, but actuallyjust meeting the quys ball, but actuallyjust meeting the guys and the women who we normally play with here. it's an important pa rt play with here. it's an important part of our lives. and it hasn't been an easy time for this golf club, has at? i know there have been
6:38 pm
people who have fallen ill here. well not only fallen ill. so one of the executive members was on a ventilator for ten days just down the road. three members sadly passed away of covid—19. so as we start again, our thoughts are with the family. so even though you can come back to a version of normality, there is still a sadness there, isn't there? it's tempered by sadness, and also by the fact that people are always saying "this is going to be the new normal, not playing in at four, but playing in two. " it's important to say that office complex for cubs in england, clubs and wales will reopen from next monday, but clubs in northern ireland and in scotland remain closed. sally nugent there. well in the government announcement — it was the sports of golf, tennis, angling and basketball that were named specifically — but as tim hollingsworth, the chief executive of sport england explained to me — it's actually a bit more broad in scope.
6:39 pm
it's really important to note that with the exception of outdoor swimming pools, these new guidelines relate to every single sport outdoors, as long as the guidelines are outdoors, as long as the guidelines a re closely outdoors, as long as the guidelines are closely followed. you can play them with members of your household 01’ on your own, 01’ you can them with members of your household or on your own, or you can play them with one other person who is not from your household as long as you are following the social distancing guidelines. so that will mean that for many sports, there is a possibility now of people playing them again, notjust the ones that we re them again, notjust the ones that were announced by the government over the weekend, it's for every outdoor space and every outdoor sports, sorry, as long as they follow the guidelines. most of all, as long as people say stay in relation to social distancing. —— stay safe. so what about the return of professional sport then? we know talks are ongoing around a possible resumption of the premier league. but today, the mayor of manchester — andy burham —and also the chief constable of greater manchester — ian hopkins raised concerns over the use of home and away venues. let's bring in our reporter laura scott. what did they say laura?
6:40 pm
so come at a press conference, andy burnham said that the best way to think about a restart of football was to listen to the people who it will affect most, and he said that was the players, the managers and the officials, and that their view to be the absolute priority over other factors such as tv deal or money. then we heard from ian hopkins, who from a policing perspective said his force is fearful about crowds forming outside of stadiums, whether they are played at home and away venues 01’ are played at home and away venues or at neutral venues, and he pinpointed that manchester city against liverpool fixtures potentially very problematic. he said he saw no doubt that crowds would be attracted to that match. actually, it could use the new legislation from preventing crowds from forming. laura, when we talk about a possible resumption, we heard the news today in italy that the clubs have suggested a return date of june
6:41 pm
the clubs have suggested a return date ofjune 13, pending government approval. so date ofjune13, pending government approval. so what is the next step in the talks through the premier lea ks clu bs ? in the talks through the premier leaks clubs? so the health consultation with managers and players today, this is all part of their plans to try to get back to training next week. tomorrow, there will be more meetings with the government about the medical protocols, then on monday, there is an important shareholder meeting with all of the clubs, whether they are expected to carry out a series of votes about project restart, we are not expecting one bigger overarching vote yes or no, but the clu bs overarching vote yes or no, but the clubs need to give their approval for certain elements of the plan, so monday will be a big day. in terms of the leap sports across the board, we have also had an announcement on that today. exactly. the uk government published a step one for the return of professional sports training in england. and this is individual training or group training where social distancing can be maintained. athletes will have to be maintained. athletes will have to be screened for coronavirus and venues will have to be deep cleaned all so this is very much step one.
6:42 pm
there will be any tackling, there won't be any contact, all sharing of equipment, and some sports will be able to return sooner than others. what they made clear was that athletes would have to opt in to ta ke athletes would have to opt in to take part in this training, and that there shouldn't be unreasonably affected if they decided to opt out. so for lots of sports, this won't feel at all near normal, but it's considered an important milestone towards the resumption of competitive sport. 0k, thank you very much, laura scott, our reporter there. jos buttler has told the bbc he has anxieties about a potential return to cricket this summer but doesn't think the players will be pressured into taking part. england are hoping to stage test matches injuly in so called "bio—secure" grounds, players from both sides would need to live in prolonged isolation. jos buttler has been speaking to our correspondentjoe wilson. if cricket in england is to return, the cricketers must be happy. joss butler is a senior player, world cup
6:43 pm
winner. he was part of the most thrilling crickets moments, he is 110w thrilling crickets moments, he is now facing pandemic test matches under quarantine. a key question when we spoke, would it be safe? speaking for myself, i actually have some apprehension and some anxieties around just going into it's com pletely around just going into it's completely new situation from it's going to be something we've never experienced before, and i think i don't know the answer to this yet, but you know, in a few days, hopefully, sort of have some sort of my own guidelines as to what i'm happy with, and if i can't get the assurance of x, then i think it's not quite right for me. assurance of x, then i think it's not quite right for melj assurance of x, then i think it's not quite right for me. i suppose one of the key factors as whether you or any of the players, jos, would feel that you have the confidence in the respect of the environment to say, "actually, i thought about it too many don't take us thought about it too many don't take us right." thought about it too many don't take us right. " do thought about it too many don't take us right." do you think that's the atmosphere in your own environment that does exist? it's been made clear to us from ashley giles on the doctors that you know, safety is
6:44 pm
paramount. you want to be asked to do anything that you are not co mforta ble do anything that you are not comfortable to do. you know, you can make the decision yourself. you know, i think i have days where you feel like there is no point to sports. you know, what is the point in playing? it doesn't matter. it's all... and you have other days where you feel like it so important, it gives you direction. the akamai know exactly what you mean. just a final point, jos, i wondered when we did the zoom here whether you had that other look you've gone for the short run, so what is a reflection generally on the lockdown or cut experience? probably one of regrets, i would say. i was working hard to try and grow some long hair, but i just had a couple of days where it was stressing me out, and i got the clippers out, i've had a few days of regret, to be honest. it suits you. thanks a lot. i think we have definitely seen worse lockdown haircuts, haven't we? when formula one eventually resumes carlos sainz is poised to replace

sebastian vettel at ferrari with daniel ricciardo set to take the spaniards seat at mclaren. today should have been a day of celebration for the motor sport. it's the championships 70th birthday. there were plans to mark it, but those, like the sport, are on hold for the moment. nick parrott reports. motor racing history being made. formula got off to a glamour starts, the king and queen attended the first race at silverstone, there was even a prince from thailand taking part, and 150,000 fans were there to witness history. and they are away! much like today, one team dominated with alvaro mayo filling the podium, their race winner giuseppe went on to become world champion. we are extremely proud of being the birthplace of the modern formula championship. it's allowed an entire industry to grow up. it's absolutely i'io industry to grow up. it's absolutely no coincidence that seven out of the ten modern formula!
6:46 pm
no coincidence that seven out of the ten modern formula 1 teams are based in this area. cars were tested earlier this year, but coronavirus brought the sport to a standstill before the first race could be run. formula 1 silverstone and the government are trying to stage the british grand prix behind closed doors injuly, british grand prix behind closed doors in july, but british grand prix behind closed doors injuly, but that has yet to be confirmed. situations can change more quickly than a sport built on speed can react. but even if a race at silverstone cans go ahead, there is still hope for the future. one thing! is still hope for the future. one thing i would say come about 70 years of experience, it means it does we have in this business the retain knowledge of how difficult it is to put things on. we are completely realistic about how complicated, how expensive, how challenging it is to put on this sort of race. that's the knowledge that gives me complete confidence that gives me complete confidence that we will bounce back next year. the sport and its fans will be hoping the next chapter in its history can be written as soon as it is safe to do so. nick parrott, bbc

news. and before we go — baseball fans in south korea may not be allowed to watch their favourite teams at stadiums due to the pandemic but the stands were not empty in one arena. all thanks to life—sized cardboard cut—outs of portraits sent in by the fans. the korean baseball league season kicked off this month after a five—week delay due to the pandemic but all games will be played without fans in attendance. the club said more than 60 fans participated in the cut—out initiative, sending their own pictures, along with their favourite players or even their pets. best seats in the house. that's all from sportsday. we will see you again soon, bye—bye. let's take a look at the key points
6:48 pm
that came out of today's government coronavirus briefing, led by the housing and communities secretary robertjenrick. mrjenrick said that people in england can now move house again, if they follow the guidance published on the government website. it comes as another 49a coronavirus—related deaths have been recorded in the past day in the uk. that brings the total number of confirmed covid—19 deaths in the uk to 33,186. mrjenrick said social distancing measures remain critical to control the virus. he said that construction sites can apply to extend their working hours to 9pm on monday to saturday in residential areas. the government confirmed that it has once again missed its daily testing target of 100,000. 87,063 tests were carried out yesterday. the deputy chief medical officer for england, jenny harries, says the number of people in hospital with the virus is 15% lower than a week ago. after announcing the government's
6:49 pm
plans to re—open the housing market, mrjenrick outlined the conditions that would have to be for estate agents to operate safely. for most people, moving home is not a luxury. people decide to move home because their personal circumstances change. the changes that i've announced today are happening safely in order to control the virus and to protect the public. we have published very detailed guidance, informed by public health, advice to explain how this can be achieved, with all parties observing hygiene measures and social distancing guidelines. people have asked, "why would they be able to look "around a strangers home, but not to visit their parents? "or loved ones at home?" now, i understand why this may seem confusing at first glance, especially when people have been separated from their loved ones for so long. but our guidelines make clear that in the first instance,
6:50 pm
the viewings should have been virtually, when viewings ——the viewings should happen virtually, when viewings do happen in person, we've set out a clear plan to ensure the safety of everybody involved in the property itself. those considering moving in and the estate agents and letting agents. these requirements include visits being by appointment only, open house viewings should not be taking place, and speculative viewings where buyers or tenants are not serious yet are highly discouraged. all parties should follow strict social distancing guidelines, all internal doors should be opened where possible, the current occupier should vacate the property for the duration of the visit, going out for their daily exercise, going out to the shops are standing in the garden if that is possible. all involved in the process should wash their hands upon entering
6:51 pm
the property and once the viewing has taken place, all the services in the property including the door handles should be thoroughly cleaned. robertj and rick speaking earlier. we can speak to shadow housing secretary, thangam debbonaire. shejoins me now. all systems go as far as the housing market is concerned, were you surprised by that? i was can because when he heard yesterday that there was going to be a housing announcement today, what i prepared for and what i'd hope to see in this announcement was the secretary of state setting out how we are going to deal with the end of the emergency accommodation for people who were street homeless a couple months ago, how are we going to do with the end of the temporary ban on evictions, those people who are really struggling to make rent at the moment are really worried about what's going to happen when that ban is lifted. and i was surprised actually that of all the industries to pick what they have chosen to go with is something which by its very nature will require people to enter other people's homes when we are told by the government themselves that entering a home that's one of
6:52 pm
the riskier things. and we heard him saying there that all services will meet —— surfaces will need to be wiped down from an outcome if you area wiped down from an outcome if you are a tenant already worried about making rents, or already worried about whether or not you are going to lose your home and your landlord decides that you are and you are going to be evicted perhaps, and their wanting to show someone around, they are in a very vulnerable position at that point. but this is all about kick—starting the account become his dick? it's about getting stamp duty vat and getting the housing market moving and trying to get some money back in. and i think that that is a wonderful aim, and i in. and i think that that is a wonderfulaim, and i think in. and i think that that is a wonderful aim, and i think if the government wants to kick—start the economy, there are so many better ways that we could be doing this. this is focusing purely on one part of the housing market. when actually what we need to be doing is expanding massively the provision of social and truly affordable housing. the government could be doing that. it could be looking for an ambition. he said, and i agree with him from he wants people to have good quality homes, but i want everybody to have a home that is truly affordable, that zero carbon, that is the home for the future, and we have seen in
6:53 pm
this crisis that there are too many people living in overcrowded expensive accommodation. some of them are the key workers that we are plotting on a thursday night. they deserve better. so are they wrong to be doing this? i would rather that they had put their emphasis, their right came aim, correct into want to kick—start the housing market, i would rather they used this opportunity to find ways to invest in social and truly affordable housing, and expanded the provision of the housing associations and councils to make use of funds or borrow money or be able to invest in that further housing to start with those homes that were already built and get people out of emergency accommodation and into permanent accommodation and into permanent accommodation so that we can really get up to that the government set up earlier this year that ever but he should be off the streets. we have shown in the last two months as a country, that if you really want to end street homelessness, it can be donein end street homelessness, it can be done ina end street homelessness, it can be done in a matter of days. is a big focus as well, obviously, getting people back to work. anybody who can't work from home is being
6:54 pm
encouraged to go to work. building sites, there was another issue he spoke about today and this idea that you can now. . . spoke about today and this idea that you can now... building sites even in residential areas will be able to operate from monday to saturday until nine p:m.. i found that a bit worrying as well, given that people are still being told by the government, and again, rightly so, i agree with this comment to work from home if they can, and there who are furloughed and others who are self isolating, i think the idea of having a building site running in a residential area from eight in the morning until nine o'clock at night is not acceptable. now, the secretary of state said on the press conference that it would be only with neighbourhoods consent. no, that's not what's in the written statement that he issued earlier where it was very clearly a default towards a 9pm finish. we also need towards a 9pm finish. we also need to know that workers are safe on those sites. there is plenty of guidance and going through them very carefully, what i want to hear as hear as well as that the secretary of state is talking to the trade union representatives and other workers representatives so that eve ryo ne workers representatives so that everyone can feel safe as as well as that the secretary of state is talking to the trade that everyone can feel safe as well as actually and briefly, in england, the

restrictions are being used as of today, do you think, for example,. they will be able to achieve the social distancing necessary to get people back to work?|j social distancing necessary to get people back to work? i think that thatis people back to work? i think that that is tricky, and there is obviously a lot of work going on, andi obviously a lot of work going on, and i have talked to house builders and i have talked to house builders and people in the construction industry, and there are lots of things they can do and are doing. but there are certain procedures and certain pieces of equipment that can only be operated by people quite close together, and it's actually remarkably difficult to make sure that you do have access to handwashing, and obviously what we don't want to do is put a strain on the already stretched supply of ppe and put it in places where it may be is needed, but where there might be an alternative such as not doing the work in that way. thank you very much for talking to us. ella and i thank you for having me. we can speak to now richard copus who is an estate agent. he works in exeter. hejoins me now from his home in east devon. i thank you are surprised we're back in business so quickly. yes, very, actually. we were looking for it and expecting to have some news on being
6:56 pm
able to show people around homes, which is slightly more logical and easier to deal with. it's good news for us, obviously commend it's particularly good news for home buyers and sellers and the chancellor of the exchequer, i'm sure. so people, a lot of people are going to be nervous, a lot of people have been locked down and not being able to leave their homes, and suddenly this prospect of going into other people's homes for more people coming to their homes, what sort of sense are you getting from clients that you have already? well, firstly, i was really pleasantly pleased and slightly surprised this morning to see on the two main industry online magazines the vast majority of estate agents are very concerned about this. we have rules and regulations now, the instructions from the government on exactly how we should show people around properties. we are concerned for all of the people, the sellers, the buyers, the general viewers, also ourselves and our families, so we are all in the same boat together here. ppe and social distancing is going to be essential to keep that
6:57 pm
at its utmost. people always want to know about house prices, don't they? are you expecting house prices to fall considerably? well that's the really interesting one. there was, i think the guardian today said they are expecting house prices to fall about 15%. i don't think that's going to be the case. it's going to be very interesting. we got two scenarios here, we've got one that the lockdown on the property market has only actually been about 7—8 weeks, sol has only actually been about 7—8 weeks, so i think about 70 to 80% of people who were already in transaction or seriously looking to buy will carry on and to sell and buy. if we had another month and a half to two months, it would've been very different, because people then would've set, right, i'm not going to sell now, i am going to wait till next year or the year after, i'm going to sort myself out. prices, i think i'm a some places, i think i'm a london might show a noticeable drop, a noticeable drop, not talking but a major drug, possibly about 10%. there a lot more people saying
6:58 pm
they want to move out to the provinces, they suddenly discover that working from home is quite possible and quite pleasant. i think it's going to depend very much on the regions of. richard, thank you very much for talking to us this evening. thank you. now it's time for a look at the weather with darren bett. hello again. the call that we saw developing early on is continuing to fade away, so early on is continuing to fade away, so with clearing skies for the most pa rt so with clearing skies for the most part and later wins, the temperatures will drop quickly. there is macleod bringing some showers into northern scotland, keeping temperatures up here, we've got a bit more blue on the chart elsewhere, the signs that in the countryside in particular some frost by the end of the night. for many, it will be a cold, bright and sunny start, cloud amounts will increase, we will see the cloud and showers pushing down across scotland, eventually into northern ireland, more clout for england and wales, but probably dry here, some sunshine still, the cold when picking up across southern parts of england, but temperatures on the whole a little bit higher than they were
6:59 pm
today. probably getting off to a cloudier start for more of the country on friday, so not quite as cold in the morning. probably the best of the sunshine after the chilli or starch will be the southern parts of england and wales, where temperatures are likely to get up where temperatures are likely to get up to 17—18d. turning pretty cloudy elsewhere, few showers in the north.

this is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. facing a recession — official figures show the uk economy shrank in the first three months of the year, and that only covers the beginning of the lockdown. it is now, yes, very likely that the uk economy will face a significant recession this year, and we are in the middle of that as we speak. i think it would be naive to suggest that everyone will get through this. unfortunately, there will be casualties. questions from the opposition over the guidance care homes were given at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. kickstarting european tourism — the eu sets out measures to lift restrictions for the summer season. getting back to work in england — garden centres reopen. as the lockdown eases, we'll look at the dos and don'ts.
