this will reduce the depth of the hole that we are in but it is still a fairly sizeable hole and it is a challenging time for us, no question. the ten teams, seven of which are based in the uk, can now look forward to eight european races starting in austria next month. but they will look very different. empty stands and strict protocols, temperature checks on arrival, as we were subject to earlier, regular testing and a bio secure paddock with team size and movement heavily restricted. it has been a long break without it. obviously it was needed with everything that was going on in the world. but you know, i have dearly missed it. i've been trying to keep myself occupied as much as i can. i've been driving on my simulator which isn't the real thing. but no, just buzzing to get going again. when the british grand prix gets under way here two months from now it will mark the first time in the history of this iconic circuit that it will host two world championship races in a single season. there had been major concerns the event would not take
6:31 pm
place at all but f1 has been given an assurance by the government that its teams will be exempt from a 14— day self—isolation rule for entries to the uk. other sports have been given similar encouragement. today, the ecb announced that england will play three back—to—back tests against the west indies on two bio secure grounds next month. sport's reemergence from shutdown is gathering pace and with a record equalling seventh world championship in lewis hamilton's sights, this most unusual of sporting summers could still provide many memorable moments. dan rowan, bbc news, silverstone. time for a look at the weather. here's tomasz schafernaker. thank you. make the most of the balmy weather because it is about to change with gorgeous conditions gci’oss change with gorgeous conditions across the south of the country but soon we will have to wave goodbye to the clear blue skies and all of that summertime warmth. tomorrow will be very different. the rain clouds have
6:32 pm
reached scotland already and the change is upon us and soon this much cooler current of air will follow in all the way from the arctic. this is the rain through the course of the evening and tonight, persistent across parts of eastern and central scotland, the north—east of england andi scotland, the north—east of england and i suspect by the early hours of the morning some of the rain will reach southern areas as well, but the further south you are, the more patchy the rain will be, so for most of us —— most of us, wednesday morning starts very overcast with occasional outbreaks of rain and we can see how the rain will break up a little as it heads further south and if anything across northern areas it actually turns a little bit brighter. in glasgow and belfast there will be sunshine but it will feel fresher. temperatures will be around 15 degrees in the north, may be around 16 or 17 in the south. that was wednesday and this is thursday and you see the wind blowing straight out of the north and a very noticeable chill in the air with the wind a bit stronger
6:33 pm
across southern northern and eastern areas on thursday, 12 degrees in newcastle under real chill and well below the average further south as well. by the end of thursday there will be one or two spots across the north—east of england and possibly the north—east of the uk and the welsh hills which might have seen around 20 millimetres of rain, so a good dose of rain but many of us a lot less tha n good dose of rain but many of us a lot less than that, so the current indication is that this cool and u nsettled indication is that this cool and unsettled weather will last into the weekend and possibly into next week as well. wejoin the bbc‘s news we join the bbc‘s news teams where you are.
6:34 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm jane dougall. let's go racing. formula one returns with — not one, but two silverstone grand prixs this summer. flattened the curve — the windies could be on their way to old trafford for a possible resumption of international cricket. and jurgen klopp is reaching for the stars or, perhaps another planet, as liverpool prepare to play at neutral venues. may be the alternative is not to play at all, i will play where ever you want to, if it is on mars, i do not care. —— if the alternative is
6:35 pm
to not play at all. hello and welcome to sportsday. we start with formula one because confirmation came today that racing will be underway on the 5th ofjuly in austria — and there will be an historic two races at silverstone. the revised schedule will see eight races in europe with the silverstone double—header on august the 2nd and then the 9th. its thought the re—start will provide a much needed financial boost to the industry which has been hit hard financially by the pandemic. our sports news editor dan roan is at silverstone for us. ten fi races have been cancelled this season so today's news comes a hugely significant booths and relief to the whole sport including the seven teams of course that are based here in the uk. the grand prix and
6:36 pm
silverstone as one of the defining highlights of the british sporting calendar and now we know and august on consecutive weekends for the first time this famous home circuit will host two championship race as an season season “— will host two championship race as an season season —— single—season. to have to grand prix is massive and of course the fans will desperately mess our knowledgeable, passionate crowds and the biggest and best in the world but it is better than nothing. it is much better than nothing. it is much better than nothing because we will have to races and that is historic for silverstone. we had in the past had formula i cars a couple time and this evening but not championships and not back to back. like every business we are staring down the barrel of horrific losses this year and this will reduce the depth of the hole we are in. has been given
6:37 pm
an assurance by the government that an assurance by the government that all; an assurance by the government that a 14 day self isolation quarantine rule applies to all entries to the uk. that is unusually important not just for this expired but others like cricket and football as well. silverstone had to connect to some strict conditions and there will be regular testing and strict limits on the number is back in gain entry to the number is back in gain entry to the circuit. and teams will have to travel and be housed in segregated bubbles away from other teams and members of the public as well. of course it will look very different and feel different because the british grand prix weekend is use to 350,000 fans or a sale over the course of the several days. best time there will be no fans aloud and it will be behind closed doors as with all the other races announced across europe when racing resumes.
6:38 pm
it will be challenging financially for the circuit and the sport as the whole bike nonetheless it has a major boost and of course it means when it comes to lewis hamilton, he will have the chance to go for it asap and crowned. —— for a seventh crown. our sports editor dan roan there on the implications around the return of formula one. well earlier i spoke to british driver for williams, george russell who's looking forward to getting back to his days job. safely of course. it has been a long break and without it obviously with everything going on in the world and i have been trying to keep myself occupied as much as i can and driving on the simulator which is not the real thing. it will keep me occupied for a couple of days or almost a weekend because of the unkind but happy to go again. what
6:39 pm
about reverse grade qualifying will that be fair to all teams?” about reverse grade qualifying will that be fair to all teams? i am against the idea and surprising for me taking the back runner and getting the opportunity to start the friend but i am here fighting for my career and being thrown into a position that we are fighting in that position, we will get drivers make us look stupid because it is like telling a dog into a bull fight. no chance and we will be at the front of this grant having faster ca rs the front of this grant having faster cars and i am fighting for my career and trying to do a good job but i will be made to look like a bit ofan but i will be made to look like a bit of an idiot. i am sure that will not be the case. international cricket could join formula one in getting underway next month. the ecb announced that england men will play three tests against the west indies injuly behind closed doors, subject to government approval. old trafford will host the second test — starting on the 16th — and then the third —
6:40 pm
starting on the 24th. the west indies squad are expected to arrive in the uk on the 9th ofjune, and will go into quarantine, while training at old trafford, before moving to the ageas bowl in hampshire for the start of the first test on the 8th ofjuly. england captain joe root says if approved — it'll be a safe and welcome return to the game. it is really nice to get that training yesterday. it was pretty straightforward actually and obviously a lot of things put in place but at that strange for people to throw it back. but rusty and a few aspects but pleased with how it felt together and very excited about playing now. everything to start with, everything seems i playing now. everything to start with, everything seemsi million miles an hour but slowly as a few hours when on it seems to come back to me. and by the end of it and felt really good. said that... it was really good. said that... it was really nice just to get out and
6:41 pm
enjoy biting again. and i think a lot of players will in some ways have found positives from having a period of time like this away from cricket and feel really fresh and energise coming back into it and certainly for me, having played almost consistently for such a long period of time and at such a high pressured cricket, and the last couple of years in particular, to get a chance to get away and i definitely feel it will take me forward into this next phase, from my knowledge and what i have been made aware of, it seems to be outstanding and that medical team have gone to make it the bubble if you like and the environment as safe as possible, it is incredible really but for the west indies to still come over here, they are obviously helping the game massively and of
6:42 pm
course safety is everything and it would not be possible if that was going to be compromised but still it must be extremely scary and i think the whole cricket world will be grateful to see some cricket again. let's take a look at some of the other sports news stories making the headlines today. after it's return yesterday, racing continued behind closed doors today. kempton become the second racecourse after newcastle to host a meet. it was the first ride back for frankie dettori, who won with galsworthy. and snooker continued behind closed doors at milton keynes. jack lisowski was among the winners, beating 0liver lines in the latest round of matches in the championship league. premiership and championship rugby union clubs have been given the go—ahead to return to non—contact training. players will be allowed to train in small, socially distant groups. meanwhile, an overhaul of the salary cap in the premiership has been unanimously approved by clubs.
6:43 pm
liverpool womens goal keeper fran kitching is to leave the club, descirbing this season as her most challenging. she posted on social media she wanted an environment testing both players and people in the right way and allowing them to thrive. liverpool were bottom of the wsl when the league was halted. kitching is the third player to leave the club in a week. while the women prospering team look likely to be relegated, liverpool men are out of this world. the premier league is due to return on the 17th ofjune with neutral venues a possibility — to stop fans from gathering outside stadiums. jurgen klopp says he'd be happy to play on mars if it meant his side could finish their matches and clinch their first league title for 30 years. this situation is a positive situation, and our fans this situation is a positive situation, and ourfans make something negative of it so i hope
6:44 pm
we have some home games to be honest, there are only four and five away games so we will see where we play but i wanted to say that, when i spoke first of all, the alternative is not to play at all, i will play where ever if it is on mars, to be honest but we have to play football games if we want and have to win them on top of that and we do not want to stop winning after two games or whatever because after the first three games, with crystal palace and manchester city, i did not see any results written in the stars there so we have to work really ha rd stars there so we have to work really hard for it and then, look, you celebrate always, where ever it is, the league first and yes a lot of people around and time for a family and stuff like this and if you want you can always find any issues in the situation. if we will
6:45 pm
be champions, what ever celebration as possible we will do, as a team, internally and with all our supporters in the moment when we are allowed to do so again and then i can promise if it happens it will be a parade as well, whenever, who ca res. you can hear the full interview withjurgen klopp on radio five live tonight from seven. well, yesterday liverpool players showed their solidarity with the black lives matter campaign, following the death of george floyd in minneapolis, taking a knee in the centre circle. a number of sportspeople have shown messages of support for floyd — and now fifa have called for "common sense" to be used with players who choose to do so. jadon sancho was booked after revealing a shirt which said "justice for george floyd" during borussia dortmund's bundesliga game on sunday. fifa regulations bar players from displaying any political or religious slogans on their kit. meanwhile, floyd mayweather has offered to cover the funeral costs for george floyd.
6:46 pm
the former boxer‘s management company has confirmed he's reached out with an offer to pay for all expenses relating to the funeral. well the response from the sporting world to george floyd's death has been immense. nedum 0nuoha is an english footballer who plays as a defender for majort league soccer club, real salt lake. he spoke to radio five live earlier today it is emotional but i think it is something that has been overdue to be honest because i think the waves of energy towards this this week and there has been a lot of george floyd and so on but these issues have been around for decades and people have been trying to make noise and trying to say things and have been pushed away for too long and it got to the point where frankly, the strength as it is not just point where frankly, the strength as it is notjust black people protesting now but hopefully the change will come. with and that,
6:47 pm
there are so many nuanced things within the protest because say for example black people are scared to do what some of the white people are doing to the police were trying to make their voices heard in his protest a nd make their voices heard in his protest and it shows exactly what has been going on if you know what i mean. it is crazy to see but i will not necessarily tell them that they should not be able to do anything because they have not been heard for so long so far so let them be heard. and extensive coverage on that story both on bbc news and the bbc sports website. finally, ii—year—old british skateboarder sky brown is recovering from a fractured skull and broken wrist after falling during training in california. a dramatic video posted via her social media channels shows brown — who was hoping to become britain's youngest summer 0lympian in tokyo — falling from a ramp before being taken to hospital. she was said to be unresponsive on arrival,
6:48 pm
but should fully recover. as he can see there she is conscious and speaking. —— as you can see there. nice to see her smiling and fingers crossed for her recovery. that's all from sportsday. you can see more on our website but for now goodbye. hello and good evening, you are watching bbc news. let's take a look at the key points made during today's downing street briefing. 324 more people have died with coronavirus in the uk, according to figures from the department of health and social care. this takes the total number of deaths in the uk from the virus to 390,369. in response to the publication of a report today which confirmed that people from black,
6:49 pm
asian and minority ethnic asian and minority ethnic communities have been hit harder by coronavirus — the health secretary said ‘black lives matter‘. matt hancock said the report was particularly timely given that people across the world are angry about racial injustice following the death of george floyd. he also praised the role played by ethnic minority medical and care workers in the nhs. following criticism of the government's testing data by the uk's statistics authority, the health secretary said he was looking at ways in which the information could be ‘improved'. he insisted the data is the ‘simplest way of presenting what is a complicated picture'. and on the topic of a second wave, professorjohn newton — england's testing coordinator — said it was likely to be patchy and in local areas. mps have approved the government's motion to only allow them to vote in person — and not remotely.
6:50 pm
the vote was a lot different to what we usually see in the houses of parliament, this image was taken by the labour mp ben bradshaw inside portcullis house. he said on twitter there was no social distancing — and called it an ‘absolute disgrace‘. the queue stretched through portcullis house — here you can see mps queuing up to vote. and it even stretched outside — with mps queueing throughout the parliamentary estate. let‘s speak to our political correspondentjessica parker. pretty extraordinary scenes as they we re pretty extraordinary scenes as they were trying to vote there. nothing like we have really seen before so what traditionally happened as mps go through these lobbies that are on either side of the chamber to register whether they are in favour ofa register whether they are in favour of a motion or against it. but they get pretty rant and they moved to a
6:51 pm
virtual way of working due to coronavirus over recent weeks so where are they not voting but online and a lot of them were not in the chamber and dialling and for the conference for debate and there were concerns from some of the conservative backbencher is that the system was not working and they wa nted system was not working and they wanted and and to the virtual parliament as long as it could be made safe in the house of commons. the house and government and house authority seemed to have come up with that mps could go back to westminster and their staff are encouraged to come back to parliament and few people on the estate and 50 mps could be allowed in the chamber at any one time but they are being told they have to vote in person and that is why you had seen these long used across the parliamentary state as mps and filing into the chamber, going either side of the dispatch box in the clearing whether they are in favour or it against a motion and it
6:52 pm
is very time—consuming and there is a lot of criticism of the fact that the mps who are shielding or have terror responsibilities cannot come into westminster and cannot cast a vote and they say they are being this enfranchised. —— or have carer responsibilities. joe biden has attacked president trump for his handling of the protest which has now swept across the united states following the death of george floyd, the unarmed black man who died in police custody and minneapolis last week. joe biden said that america is crying out for leadership to heal a country divided by racial tensions. this afternoon, donald trump visited st. john paul ii shrine. the archbishop criticised
6:53 pm
the visit and said he finds it baffling or reprehensible that any catholic facility would allow itself to be so manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles. the other day donald trump posed outside a church with a bible. the church had been damaged by protesters. let‘s speak now to bishop gregory brewer, an episcopal bishop whose diocese is central florida. thank you so much for being with us. said donald trump visited the shrine today and how the bible yesterday, what is he trying to do?” today and how the bible yesterday, what is he trying to do? i am not sure entirely when he is trying to deal and unless what he is trying to do is claim some sort of religious legitimacy for the actions that he has taken legitimacy for the actions that he has ta ken around legitimacy for the actions that he has taken around the death of george floyd in the depths that happened
6:54 pm
afterwards. it is hard to do because the actions and my opinion has been contrary to the scriptures that he holds up or even the witness of st. john‘s church there on lafayette square, just prior to his walk across to st. john‘s, the clergy and staff and others were handing out water bottles to the protesters. the contradictions for me were absolutely baffling. you call this blasphemy which is a pretty strong word to use against the president of the united states. why do you say it is blasphemy? i did, it is not a term i use very often at all but it seems to me that part of what blasphemy is to use particularly the scripture which we believe is inspired by god and yet hold it up as if what he is saying is policies
6:55 pm
are in sync with what the bible teaches. and at least as a bishop i can say i do not see that. there is no evidence for me that for what he is doing in handling this crisis has anything to do with the teachings of the scripture and therefore to hold it up as if that somehow supports his position and to me that contradicts the very things scripture teaches. do you think he isa man scripture teaches. do you think he is a man of god? i have no way of knowing that quite honestly. there is nothing that i have heard him say that would be indicating that to be the case, i did not know his heart and as well it is very hard to impugn motive to someone‘s actions. all i can say is the actions i have seen all i can say is the actions i have seen do not reflect the teachings of the scriptures. as we see these demonstrations continue, sometimes violent and we see a protest in new york right now actually, what kind
6:56 pm
of leadership are you looking for from the president of the united states ? from the president of the united states? what do you want him to do to try to heal the united states or do you believe actually that he is simply not capable of doing that? whether he is capable of doing that or not actually remains to be seen. what i would hope from the president would be an effort to try to bring people together, to call for unity, it would be so much different for example if you had gone to st. john‘s church and called people to prayer, if he quoted the scripture that would call people to unity as opposed to just holding it up or standing there in front of the church, particularly after it had been damaged by the protesters. those would be the things that i would hope. he can certainly understand that according to the oath of office that he took, so help me god being the last phrase, date he is accountable to god for his actions and that is how i understand
6:57 pm
the oath of office to indicate. that is why i‘m so saddened and disappointed and yes i do believe his actions were blasphemous, and holding upa his actions were blasphemous, and holding up a bible that contradicts the very things that he is doing. i do not see him as acting as a force for unity and bringing the country together. said that we can heal. that is the kind of leadership in this hour that this country needs. bishop of the central florida a diocese, thank you forjoining us on bbc news and thank you for your time. now it‘s time for a look at the weather with tomasz shafernaker. the warm and sunny weather will be on hold for now and instead of the coming days, will have to get used to the cooler, cloudier and at times wetter weather conditions and across scotland that change has already taken place and through the course of tonight and
6:58 pm
into tomorrow the rain bearing clouds continues to spread through the north and further their southwards and across the northeast of england and yorkshire and probably some in the south early on wednesday morning. let‘s look at the coal tonight and temperatures in many towns and cities will be around the ten or even 15 degrees and one or two spots so here is tomorrow, and overcast day for many of us. winds coming from the north and it will feel chilly and at times particularly across england and wales it will be patchy rain meaning not everyone will get it but there isa not everyone will get it but there is a chance of one or two downpours across southern is a chance of one or two downpours across southern areas.
6:59 pm
7:00 pm
this is bbc news, with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. president trump ups the stakes and threatens to bring in the military to quell growing civil unrest following george floyd‘s death in police custody. if a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the united states military and quickly solve the problem for them. protests have now swept across more than 75 cities in the united states, despite curfews to try to stop them. an empty coronavirus test centre, as the uk government is rebuked by officials over the way it presents data on testing.
