thousands of people died in wuhan, and the city was locked down for 76 days. two months on, it is beginning to recover, but the scars will take a long time to heal. he sings hello again. we've had a stagnant weather pattern for much of the past week. slow—moving downpours. fewer of those around on saturday. it felt warm in the sunshine, but not as hot as it's going to be next week.
9:55 pm
and before we get to that 30 degrees celsius, we've got this strongerjet stream coming off the atlantic, which is why we've got low pressure with us through the weekend. that stays with us, but meanders further north and west next week, and it starts to weaken, which means that it will allow high pressure to build in the south. but as you can see, we start the day with some rain still in eastern areas on sunday. it gives way to sunny spells and showers. stronger winds than we've had for a good week or more. near gale—force in the north and west, blowing those showers in. frequent again in the north and west, nearer to that area of low pressure. more scattered further south. and temperatures, on the face of things, are very much as they have been in the past week, but it will feel fresher, because we've just moved that atlantic air in for now. and that stays with us across scotland and northern ireland on these weather fronts here. but high pressure, as i mentioned, starts to move into southern and eastern areas, as the jet stream weakens and moves northwards. and that will do two things —
9:56 pm
it will dry the weather out, but it will allow, with that continental air, to build the temperature. but for northern ireland and for scotland and north—western fringes of england and wales, through the course of monday, another pulse of wet weather to come. much—needed rain still for the gardens. not particularly cool, 17 or 18 degrees, but not as warm as it will be further south and east. still quite a bit of cloud around, but the sunshine lifts the temperatures into the low—20s. then through monday night into tuesday, that weather front, as you can see, is straddling the same sort of areas. it weakens, and then we'll see another pulse of rain potentially coming through. again, the timing, we'll have to be firming up on, but we'll keep temperatures at roundabout average in the north and west, but we could be pushing into the high—20s across parts of england and wales by tuesday. and as i say, that heat is coming with those south—easterly winds. it's already warming up as well across iberia. it will warm up through france and the low countries. and that heat will be pushed in the south and east of the united kingdom. so, wednesday, still with our weather front across parts of scotland and northern ireland. not for all, and it won't be a wash—out.
9:57 pm
there'll be some drier spells and hazy sunshine, it'll feel pleasant enough. but we're not going to have the heat that we'll have further south and east, when we could push up into the high—205. for many parts of england and wales, probably 30, in southern and eastern areas. wednesday, thursday's probably when the heat peaks, but this is where we become more uncertain. that low pressure near iceland will be the reason for the heat ebbing away, and it looks as if that atlantic air will slowly filter its way southwards, probably towards friday and the weekend. so thursday, another day where we've got some showers, or more cloud, across the north and the west. but for many, it's looking dry and warm still. it could just trigger the odd sharp shower, the odd thunderstorm around. but further south and east, we're maintaining that heat. as i say, it's a slow progress, this breakdown to slightly cooler air. as you can see, it could be into next weekend, but there's some uncertainty. but all the time, further north and west, we maintain
9:58 pm
temperatures about average, a little more cloud, and the chance of some rain. but that chance of rain does increase further south, as we go through next weekend, as that low pressure close to iceland pushes its way eastwards — but temporarily, potentially. but as i say, there is a question mark as to how long—lived that heat will be. we'll keep you updated.
