11:31 pm
hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are the author and broadcaster, john kampfner and the deputy political editor of the daily express, sam lister. lovely of the daily express, sam lister. to have you here to lovely to have you here both with us to go through the papers. let's start with some of the front pages that we have already. of the front pages that we have already. the i leads on the so—called ‘super saturday‘ as lockdown eases in england. the paper says that pubs and restaurants may not be as busy as expected, with only a small percentage of people surveyed by the papers saying they will enjoy the new freedoms. the express features borisjohnson‘s advice to the public to be sensible on saturday, and warning that businesses could close again if the virus spreads rapidly. meanwhile the ft focuses
11:32 pm
on the chancellor's economic statement next week, in which he is expected to avoid offering big tax cuts in order to safeguard the economy after coronavirus. the ft looking ahead to the chancellor is an announcement next week. an announcement next week. the telegraph looks at the charging ofjeffrey epstein‘s ex—girlfriend ghislane maxwell and a new york prosecutor's appeal to prince andrew to help with their investigation. the mirror reports on that story as well, adding that the prosecutor said they "would welcome" any help from the prince and that their doors "remain open. " and the guardian has that story on its front page too. and another front page story in the times looks at plans for ‘air bridges‘, which the paper says will open up the opportunity to travel to a0 countries for british tourists. so let‘s begin... a quick look at some of the front pages. we are going to start off with the daily telegraph because a lot of as we saw there in those
11:33 pm
front pages, a lot of these papers focusing on the story. a confident of jeffrey focusing on the story. a confident ofjeffrey epstein focusing on the story. a confident of jeffrey epstein appearing focusing on the story. a confident ofjeffrey epstein appearing in court after being arrested by the fbi. sam, she is an accused to make of exploiting girls some as young as 14 she‘s denied all knowledge. of exploiting girls some as young as 14 she's denied all knowledge. it's just such a terrible story of abuse, of wealth and power. she is accused of wealth and power. she is accused of obviously, helping to find young girls forjeffrey epstein. it dominates the front page as you say and it‘s quite a black cloud hanging over the royal family. the and it‘s quite a black cloud hanging over the royalfamily. the duke of york, he has stepped back from royal duties. this isn‘t going away. from his point of view, the briefings coming out tonight saying he is bewildered by the claims from us prosecutors that he won‘t give witness statements in this case. they‘ve said that he has made
11:34 pm
numerous attempts to give a statement and it‘s just a fold by why the us prosecutors are making the statements. it just why the us prosecutors are making the statements. itjust isn‘t going away. it certainly isn't. that picture that we saw on the daily telegraph appearing on so many of these newspapers it‘s important to stress that this is prince andrew, this is a photo from 2001. the indictment against maxwell covers a period from 1990 for 21997. as sam was saying john the spotlight on prince andrew not comfortable there. prosecutors are in incredibly tenacious particularly when they have formally indicted someone. we saw that from the harvey weinstein case that they would really dig up as much as they could. i suppose
11:35 pm
what is so bewildering about the latest terms with regard to prince andrew is someone's got to be right and someone's got to be wrong on this. either he is cooperating fully, and i mean fully, with the fbi, telling them everything he knows through his lawyers. perhaps even allow him to go over any questions or the very least have the prosecutors to come over here, over to britain and to talk to him properly without fear or without favor. either he's doing that and they are sort of playing politics, trying to i don't know what it is, humiliate him or whatever, or he isn't doing it. and he is trying somehow to bamboozle people into saying he's cooperating when he isn't. this isjust not going to go away. and particularly, now they
11:36 pm
will be formally questioning ghislaine maxwell. might they be looking to come to some sort of arrangement with her? who knows. what the next steps are. they both, must be said always ghislaine maxwell and prince andrew deny any improper actions such as this. but asi improper actions such as this. but as i say, prosecutors have really got their bit between the teeth now and they are not going to let up. and they are going to want several daysin and they are going to want several days in court with several people, i would imagine. just to echo what you say, buckingham palace strenuously denied any impropriety by prince andrew. that definitely the front pages focusing on that story. let‘s move on to the scotsman focusing on scott‘s face, the big cover—up as lockdown as eased further. sam, this is in terms of whether you should, you shouldn‘t cover up but it will
11:37 pm
be mandatory for scotland, first shoppers from next friday. yes, this is the very real outcome of devolution and health crisis. it‘ll be on one side of the border and not go to be on one side of the border and not gotoa be on one side of the border and not go to a few miles and not wear a face mask in a few miles you will have to wear one. that is the point of devolution you make your own decisions based on your own needs. i think it‘s quite interesting because there‘s lots of mixed messages from there‘s lots of mixed messages from the experts on this. that there was a lot of among the experts in england about whether they are rather effective or not. 0bviously, we now have to wear them on public transport but the idea was that actually in shops it‘s not really that necessary because people are moving around all the time. you‘re not stuck in an enclosed space with people a long period of time. i
11:38 pm
thinkjust on a slight tangent i thinkjust on a slight tangent i think this could actually have an impact on the tourism industry for scotland‘s top we are just coming into the summer season, many people will be looking to say, to have a sta ke will be looking to say, to have a stake patient this year because of travel restrictions. scotland is in obvious choice for people in england. given that the restrictions are going to be much stricter in scotland, i think people may be relu cta nt to scotland, i think people may be reluctant to head up to scotland. if they feel that when they go out they will have to wear face mask, tougher just generally on your movements there. the question on facemasks, how effective they are, at the beginning we were sort of told, just don‘t use those medical mask. there was a lot of concern that we would be buying up the ppe that is necessary for the nhs. it seems like now more and more places are calling for a face mask. texas even ordering
11:39 pm
nearly all the states to where facemasks. i guess there is something certainly that we need to consider. face mask and face covering very hugely you can put a scarf over your face i know i'm no medical expert but they say keep on reusing the same face mask, it doesn't have any effect at all. so i think some of it is social not psychological to reassure people that you may be, that if you're on public transport sitting next to it as much for the other person as it is for yourself. the irony is the more things open up the more people are going to have to wear facemask. i was on are going to have to wear facemask. iwas ona are going to have to wear facemask. i was on a two hour plane yesterday and wearing one for two hours is quite difficult. and the real issue is not so much if you move around, if people are not so close together
11:40 pm
but it's also if you are talking loudly such as in loud bars or any the yellows like that. that is where i think the greatest danger is going to live. indeed. we will see going forward. i know that my mum made me some facemask and they are quite fetching actually so bless her. on to the times, it‘s talking aboutjob cuts. we‘ve had two very bad days so far of job cuts. we‘ve had two very bad days so far ofjob cuts over the past couple of days of a 12,000 across the uk now. 1900 morejob cuts. this is across a restaurant group which is behind cafe rouge and bella italia. becoming the latest victims of this crisis. as this particular group is dipping into administration. it's incredibly difficult. critically for these kind of mid—market dining chains. they‘ve got huge numbers of
11:41 pm
staff, big properties in key locations, rents do. and they have not been able to open. i think as well as been quite difficult to pay a lot of staff and some restaurants. because of the way the furlough system works it didn‘t take into account top ups they made from the system, the method of allocating tips out to staff. they find it quite difficult to survive. 0bviously, quite difficult to survive. obviously, the employees that were topping up weren‘t losing. i think it‘s just this really sad symptom of the position we are in. and perhaps this super saturday as we were discussing earlier, as people get out and start using late—night eating at local restaurants and helping prop them up. is that the changes to the furlough schemes, is that encouraging more companies to sadly lose these jobs as they are increasingly, as the changes happen
11:42 pm
in august they will be increasingly expected to contribute more to the scheme? well, you could be a little bit more similar to the next cynical you could say some companies have people on furloughs without necessarily topping up to the hundred percent. and then making them redundant. and they had every intention of using it to restructure their companies and to take costs out of the system. i mean, what coronavirus seems to be doing economically is not necessarily changing things from scratch but accelerating things. and the high street in britain and in other countries was already in considerable trouble with the absolute explosion in online shopping. which is kit taken over in the course of the three months of lockdown. so a lot of shops and restaurants were already threatened.
11:43 pm
this will bring that forward. and we are going to have a lot of, the fact that people will be working much more from home rather than offices, we are going to have a huge amount, notjust in the uk but in equivalent countries as well. huge amounts of energy commercial properties at a huge amount sadly, of people who used to work in those properties no longer working. in the financial times also looking ahead to the chancellors statement next week. again, this idea he will be focusing on averting job losses. but as were seeing this week alone has been really tough out there. this is exactly the point, is in a? this statement will be a statement about jobs, jobs will be at the heart of it. but by the time the measures come into effect we will have already saying tens of thousands of job losses. it‘s just an incredibly worrying time. i think from the
11:44 pm
governments point of view that they are us governments point of view that they are us paying the furlough scheme which runs to october has given companies that breathing space to make these decisions and work out what to do next. but you can‘t keep people on it forever. if it‘s propping up a job that‘s never realistically going to return, it‘s not actually helping the business long term or actually, it‘s hampering the staff member who might be able to go out and find alternative employment or get retrained or things like that. so i think they‘re trying to look at it that way. the problem is that that is little comfort if you‘re not the person whose job is is little comfort if you‘re not the person whosejob is being asked. that doesn‘t help you, it doesn‘t pay your bills. so it‘s going to be quite a tough sell. in terms of a tough sell, the ft also suggesting that the chancellor is telling tory mps not to expect big tax cuts to boost the economy. they are not like
11:45 pm
that. it's notjust a question of tax cuts some eventually are going to have to pay extraordinary borrowing. which makes the borrowing situation when david cameron said the situation is unintelligible we've got to have a stereo, and makes that seems like absolutely nothing by comparison. at the moment we can borrow and other countries can borrow because interest rates are for the moment and people are quite prepared to lend governments money. but in the end taxes are going to go up, they are not going to go down. and it will be a political question as to who will pay for it. boris johnson political question as to who will pay for it. borisjohnson is in a bind because he's got this leveling up bind because he's got this leveling up agenda for the so—called redwall, formal labour seats lend him the vote in december. and that is a very different agenda to keeping
11:46 pm
traditional conservatives who like low taxes and who are maybe more entrepreneurial and wealthy. keeping them sweet. you can't do both. and i find it very hard to do either in these very difficult circumstances. just looking to the daily express, interesting because we spoke about the eye in the previous paper review which said that super saturday is coming up this weekend where england eases its lockdown. the i was talking about how people are actually quite reluctant potentially, to come out. the express focusing on borisjohnson telling people not to be reckless on super saturday. it looks like the government is gearing up for people to come out in their droves. yeah, absolutely. the prime minister warns people fling not want people to get out and enjoy themselves obviously would been locked on for more than a hundred days now. generally most people need to go out and have some fun. but he is absolutely stressing
11:47 pm
that this is notjust now a health issue but how you behave when lockdowns restrictions are eased. will actually have a direct impact on the success of the businesses that are reopening. his point is that are reopening. his point is that business owners have gone to heroic efforts to get there businesses up and running to put in all the safety measures that we need to keep us all safe. but if people behave miraculously and there‘s a spike in infections not only does not have an impact on our house but it is actually going to have a massive impact on their futures if we have to go into lots of localised shutdowns. 0r we have to go into lots of localised shutdowns. or we havejust shut we have to go into lots of localised shutdowns. or we have just shut down sections of the economy again. 0bviously, sections of the economy again. obviously, the futures of those businesses are at risk. it‘s quite a nuanced message. it‘s go in and have some fun but don‘t go mad. nuanced message. it‘s go in and have some fun but don't go mad. it's the idea of nuance messages, we need clear guidelines don‘t we? the kind
11:48 pm
that aren‘t lost on so many. however the weather is not to be as glorious as when we saw those pictures from bournemouth beach. well, the english weather is always, the fact that it was so weather is always, the fact that it was so good during lockdown was both psychologically incredibly helpful for people but make them less depressed but at the same time always in britain when you have a good week or a good month you know it's payback time. you know it's getting it terrible at some point after. and plus this is when wimbledon should be taken place. when it's always raining. it will be more problematic. i don't think, it's about vagueness, it's about being on top of the facts. as i was saying an hour ago, i'm being on top of the facts. as i was saying an hourago, i'm in being on top of the facts. as i was saying an hour ago, i'm in berlin and chancellor merkel has absolutely got it right. she's had a lot of empathy which is something she's normally quite shy normally and her
11:49 pm
public pronouncements. she tries to avoid them. but she's been absolutely been clear with people about what she knows, what you can do, what she doesn't know, what she can't do. and at every step of the way ina can't do. and at every step of the way in a methodical way she has taken people on a very, very difficult journey. taken people on a very, very difficultjourney. which includes closing borders which is completely against the whole european ideal. and doing all kinds of other sacrifices as well. and she has done that because i think people had confidence in her. and i'm afraid to say that contrast with the uk sitting where i'm sitting could not be... the credibilityjust in terms of, forget all the politics. the pure confidence right from the get—go about delaying, allowing the chilton festival, delaying things, the mess up with ppe, the mess up with the ark, with quarantine, with education every step of the way the british government has bumbled.m
11:50 pm
your opinionjohn, certainly british government has bumbled.m your opinion john, certainly is. certainly has thanks for sharing. the times, let‘s talk about opening up the times, let‘s talk about opening up borders the times is focusing on the 40 countries that will be named safe for holiday travel. we have been waiting a week for this. what will we find out? what we‘re hoping to find out the gestation that we canjump ona to find out the gestation that we canjump on a plane and fairly simple circumstances. so when you get that you don‘t have to quarantine it when you return you don‘t have to quarantine. and it‘s something the tourism industry is absolutely desperate to see because people are not going to book summer holidays if they have to stick on a fortnight at the end to quarantine when they return. so hopefully, we‘re going to get this list of so—called air bridge countries that we can link with. we‘ve been expecting it for us quite a time but i think there‘s a bit of over a of countries. and that‘s cause delays.
11:51 pm
what do we not but hopefully we will get it tomorrow. if not we‘ve been promised by the end of the week, sunday so let‘s see. promised by the end of the week, sunday so let's see. this idea of a traffic light system, is that going to be clear enough? will we understand? that's to be clear enough? will we understand ? that's what to be clear enough? will we understand? that's what operates in other countries as well. and france had in internal traffic light system and parts of the country that were going to have restrictions eased or not. the flip side, it's not us deciding which country we think are safer, auto countries don't think britney say. for example germans who travel to greece more happily but the greeks won't let in britain. because we have a lot of catching up to do. we certainly do. thank you so much. we will hear about the traffic light system hopefully as sam was saying, we‘ve been waiting for it but hopefully we will hear later on friday as to exactly what, how that will work out and which countries and partly are on the list. john, sam thank you so much. it‘s been
