doesn't take into account differences in testing rates. here was mike pence speaking at the coronavirus task force briefing. at this point, we have tested more than 39 million americans. among those, more than 3 million americans have tested positive and more than 1.3 million americans have recovered. sadly, more than 133,000 americans have lost their lives, and our sympathies are with all of the impacted families. while we mourn with those who mourn, because of what the american people have done, because of the extraordinary work of our health care workers around the country, we are encouraged that the average fatality rate continues to be low and steady. let's speak now to our north america correspondent david willis so, we heard from mike pence they are speaking about these figures. devastating figures for the united

states with these latest revelations. absolutely. the united states appears to be going in the opposite direction to countries in europe, and indeed to even country such as neighbouring canada. instead of flattening the curve, the united states appears to be fattening at right now, and we have heard of them as you say, more than 3 million cases here, more than 132,000 deaths. now, president trump has repeatedly touted the mortality rate which he says is the lowest in the world, but there are hospitals in texas, florida and arizona that are struggling to cope at the moment. president trump's focus all along, of course, has been about reopening the economy as quickly as possible. it's thought that his reelection chances perhaps hinge on reopening this economy as quickly as he can. he is saying he wants schools to reopen in the autumn and that has gone contrary to the advice of his

own medical experts, and indeed, the president of the largest teaching union here who is accusing president trump of being more interested in storing political points than ensuring the safety of students. mr trump for his part is saying he will find schools or withdraw schools that fail to reopen in the autumn, kasia. david comey touched upon the situation in texas, just getting new lines coming in for the rate of hospitalizations rising by 325. it's a record high of their total on tuesday. these are figures for tuesday. these are figures for tuesday. this is a record high for a tenth day in a row in texas. they are staggering figures down there in the cell. texas, arizona, florida have all seen figures off the charts over the last few days, and these are the sort of states that were the very quickest to
