11:30 pm
hello. this is bbc news with me, lukwesa burak. we'll be taking a look at tomorrow morning's papers in a moment. first, the headlines — travellers returning to the uk from spain after midnight tonight will have to self—isolate for two weeks as the country is removed from the travel corridors exemption list. a spike in coronavirus cases in spain has prompted new measures there amid fears of a more widespread "second wave". health experts have said the case for action on obesity has "never been stronger"
11:31 pm
because of the coronavirus pandemic. gyms and swimming pools reopen in england, but there's a warning up to a third may stay shut because of financial troubles. british grime musician wiley is dropped by his management following a stream of anti—semitic comments on his social media accounts. music. and peter green, influential blues guitarist and co—founder of the band fleetwood mac, has died aged 73. hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow.
11:32 pm
with me are the political editor at the sunday mirror and sunday people, nigel nelson, and the political commentatorjo phillips. tomorrow's front pages, starting with. .. great starting with. .. to great starting with... to have you back. we will chat great to have you back. we will chat ina great to have you back. we will chat in a moment. the sunday times continues with its royal biography serialisation, and according to the book, prince harry left the uk after prince william behaved like "a snob" as he urged his brother not to "rush" into his relationship with meghan markle. the mail on sunday has the duke and duchess of cambridge refuting claims in the new biography that they actively spurned meghan markle. the sunday telegraph features a new portrait of the queen and says tens of thousands of british tourists in spain have had their holidays thrown into disarray with the new quarantine restrictions. the sunday mirror calls it "costa del quarantine" as holiday—makers learn they will need to self—isolate for
11:33 pm
1a days upon arrival back in the uk. and the sunday express says the new rules mean many people preparing to fly to spain may now have to cancel their trips. those are the front pages. so, let's begin. we are going to start with the sunday telegraph, and nigel if you could kick us all. tourists must quarantine upon return from spain. you watched the story developed this evening. a bit of a question as to how that news reached us. what did you make of equipment it was most peculiar. we had rumour starting in the afternoon that this was what was going to happen. i heard for the department for transport at 6pm and they could not confirm anything. by 7pm they said an announcement was on
11:34 pm
the web but they could not even tell me the web but they could not even tell m e exa ctly the web but they could not even tell me exactly what time that the new rules would start. so we thought it might be iipm rules would start. so we thought it might be 11pm and it turned out to be midnight. so the whole thing has been beset by huge chaos and confusion, and they were staying for the1.5 confusion, and they were staying for the 1.5 million brits who were on holiday in spain at the moment is they were given less than five hours notice before being told that when they come home they would have to go into lockdown again.” they come home they would have to go into lockdown again. i think nigel said it all. it's chaos for people oi'i said it all. it's chaos for people on holiday in spain and chaos of people who are planning to go to spain probably tomorrow. chaos of people coming back. and it's really bad news for the travel industry but it beggars belief the government has not been watching the growing increase in coronavirus cases in
11:35 pm
spain and the localised lock downs in that country. they have had 1000 more infections in the last two days alone. and they have had these localised lockdowns in catalonia and other parts of the country so you sort of think maybe we should have been thinking about this and not rush to quite so quickly into going back and getting everybody on flights and they will have to turn her back those flights. let's turn to the daily mirror. same story and the point that obviously a lot of countries now who rely particularly on british tourists. that tradition is there and they are worried that if they say there localised cases spike up as well. i think that is right absolutely. in spain, the 50% of spain's gdp comes from tourism —— 1596. of spain's gdp comes from tourism —— 15%. and it employs nearly 3 million jobs. on the basis of that other countries in a similar position will indeed be hugely worried. equally
11:36 pm
you can see a lot of people cancelling their holidays because of the moment itjust seems to be a really risky time to be trying to go abroad to get a bit of sun. because once you are there, go for a two week holiday, you may end up having a month off work because you get quarantine on the way back. and now we have just seen that when these quarantines happen, they have been incredibly quickly so there is no way you can put plans in place or something like this. it was interesting because we spoke to a lady this evening who was saying that when she returned home she does not have a car so if you will have to get on the bus. so if you are thinking they are trying to encourage people to self—isolate, you are still out in society really and you are not being tested. exactly. and it is this sort of lack ofjoined up thinking throughout that hasjust become more and more apparent as every day goes by. i
11:37 pm
mean what happens if your flight is delayed and you redo to land at 11pm this evening but actually now you are not going to arrive back until after midnight? does that mean you have to nag you with the quarantine for 14 days or would you have been all right? what happens if you have gone from france into spain and were driving? orspain gone from france into spain and were driving? or spain into france coming back across the channel or some thing like that. itjust is not clear to people and i think it will probably be making people think let'sjust forget probably be making people think let's just forget any chance of going away this year. we will stay home and have the weather is good because the other thing of course is you get out there and i mean i imagine the holiday companies and the airlines will be quite quick to bring people back but if you were out somewhere for a couple of weeks and this instant lockdown came in, there is no guarantee that there are going to be plans to get you back. and then the problem of insurance and refunds and all of that stuff
11:38 pm
that people have got to deal with. as we turn to the front page of the sunday times, nigel, our own transport secretary is caught up in this. the headline is grant chaps shares of virus pain in spain. there is somejoy for the shares of virus pain in spain. there is some joy for the holiday—makers who have to quarantine for the next 14 days because he transport secretary will have to go into quarantine, too. it is all a bit ironic because he had tojoin the cabinet meeting today to make the decision, so hejoined it by phone. and of course a decision at the end of it was that once he got back he will have to go into lockdown. the other bit of good news is that michael gove, who was chairing the meeting, was due to fly off to i beat that next week so he probably won't be going there either. do you know what, one of the things that came across in this was not the fact
11:39 pm
that they would have to be a 14 day corn to because so that they would have to be a 14 day corn to because so many of us now are used to this idea of disruption but will people were voicing anger at why and how the decision was made and the regional versus countrywide aspect of this. they were coming from a place that was safe. and i think this is the problem and i think this is the problem and i think it is going to become an increasing problem as we see very localised lockdowns around the world. depending on where you have been, you might be caught up in a blanket quarantine, a blanket lockdown or it will require something that is much more invasive if you like and tracks you where you have been. so let's suppose you were going to barcelona, obviously that isa high going to barcelona, obviously that is a high risk area but if you had gone to another part of spain which is not a high risk area, but unless somebody can prove that you have not
11:40 pm
beenin somebody can prove that you have not been in contact. and again it comes back to this overarching question of this virus is moving so quickly and fiow this virus is moving so quickly and now appears certainly in spain to be infecting younger people, which is quite a new thing and of course they have been gathering in droves in nightclubs and bars in things since restrictions were lifted. but unless you have got somewhere really tracking people and seeing who they beenin tracking people and seeing who they been in contact with, you cannot control and you cannot therefore make appropriate measures to control it. we have seen what has happened in leicester, people who live outside the area trying to get to workjust inside the area and all of that and the case you just mentioned about the lady he will have to travel home on the bus when she gets back tonight. we are going to turn to the story just above that, staying on the front page of the sunday times, will you behave like a
11:41 pm
snob when harry fell in love. what do you make of this? it is quite obvious this book finding freedom is written by a couple of harry and meghan cheerleaders and although harry and meghan did not personally contribute to the book, quickly their friends contribute to the book, quickly theirfriends did. and one assumes they did so with their agreement. so this is very much harry and meghan's story, very much there side of what happened with the rift in the royal family. so at the moment, what they are saying is the latest that harry objected to the weight meghan was being referred to both by his brother prince william who called her this girl and other senior rule is mentioned to have called her harry's showgirl which is the headline, that he found everyone was behaving snob ashley towards the woman he was about to be his future
11:42 pm
wife. the message appears to be from the royal family and from prince william in particular that they were urging harry to think carefully about developing the relationship which of course he also objected to. is this damaging to either or both households, these claims and the stories in the papers?” households, these claims and the stories in the papers? i think it is like a very cheap version of a hillary mantell novel. you have kensington palace, buckingham palace and clarence house and it is damagingl and clarence house and it is damaging i think to the royal family because it cheapens it. it is cheap, vulgar, tittle tattle, and nobody comes out of it particularly well. especially harry and meghan because they come out as a couple of spoiled brats who feel slighted at the slightest thing. but the queen is
11:43 pm
minting a dignified sunless but i should imagine she is probably cursing under her breath. and i think william and kate do appear to be trying to hit back but of course it is like anything. if you start engaging with the people who are telling tales, whether they are true or not, you are just fuelling the fire is within the best thing to do would be to completely ignore it. harry and meghan have gone away and eventually interest in them will presumably wane. because we all got more interesting things to think about, one would hope. the front page of the daily mail has what she has described. allegedly kate has said that we rolled up the red carpet for her so you must think you are taking the book seriously than if you are responding in this way. are taking the book seriously than if you are responding in this waylj think you have to take the book seriously. and obviously there is a huge appetite in this country for any huge appetite in this country for a ny story huge appetite in this country for any story about the royal family
11:44 pm
because they try to keep everything so because they try to keep everything so secretive. but yes what the may also day is doing is putting the kate and william case so what they are saying if none of this is true and that they welcomed meghan with open arms and it comes across that they are actually extremely hurt by they are actually extremely hurt by the allegations and are being made in this book. which of course you can understand. i don't know which side is telling the truth and probably a bit of both but even so you will be quite hurt when you have this material emanating from friends of your own brother. let's end with the royal family with the sunday telegraph and the hand of the royal family asa telegraph and the hand of the royal family as a new portrait is unveiled of the queen. yes, and apparently it isa of the queen. yes, and apparently it is a picture which shows her in an awful lot of bling, a lot of gold chairs, gold table, goal picture frame and startling blue eyes. and a
11:45 pm
beautiful bone china cup and saucer to be empty which apparently she remarked upon to the artist it looks like it needs a refill. but let's get this in the sunday times and the animalcule you want to be a bit more strong than a cup of tea to sustain her. but it is a new portrait and it is not one that i would especially welcome on my living room but i'm sure it will have its fans. quite a living room that she is sitting in there. i mean, i love this picture. i think it is great but what i think it does do is the queen is 94 now andi it does do is the queen is 94 now and i think it absolutely captures her kind of majesty and her poise. and from that point of view, i think the artist has done i think a great job. a part of course from the empty cup and saucer without the t in it. we are going to
