coronavirus than in the uk. boris johnson has been defending the decision. let's be absolutely clear about what's happening in europe and among some of our european friends. i'm afraid you are starting to see in some places these signs of a second wave of the pandemic. here is david king a former scientific adviser on borisjohnson's calculations. he's absolutely right but of course it's only in europe that there is a second wave emerging. i head of europe is for example, japan, japan had this virus very much under control and they've gone into a second wave and the second wave in japan gone into a second wave and the second wave injapan is even more serious than the first wave. what is really rather surprising about all of this news is we might have been anticipating a second wave when the winter came anticipating a second wave when the wintercame and anticipating a second wave when the winter came and these are recurring well before the winter in the middle of the summer. so yes, it's a matter

of the summer. so yes, it's a matter of real concern. sir king describing the recent rise in cases as a second wave in that clip — it's a term we have been hearing a lot — but it's important to say there is actually no formal definition for what a second wave is. some experts say for one wave to have ended, the virus would have been brought under control and cases fallen substantially. and for a second wave to start you'd need a sustained rise in infections. so these could be local flare ups, rather than a second wave. dr. eric toner, a senior scientist at thejohns hopkins center for health security, doesn't think waves are a useful term in describing a pandemic. when you re underwater, it s hard to tell how many waves are passing over your head he says. well let's hearfrom spain. catalonia is out of the areas dealing with increasing infection rates. gavin lee is in barcelona. the catalan government said the situation has reached a critical point. if in the next ten days covert cases have been reduced there will be a second lockdown in this city and with it shutting down a

vital industry that attacks millions of brits each year. tourism. tourism. as ever with this pandemic — there is a tension between health concerns and economic concerns — and tourism is right at the heart of that during europe's summer. the un's world tourism 0rganisation says just between january and may covidi9 cost the tourism industry $320billion in lost revenue — and tourist number fell by over 50% compared with the same period last year. the unwto says this data ‘makes clear the importance of restarting tourism as soon as it is safe to do so". though of course disagreement on when that moment is. and even when tourists can travel — they are being monitored. germany is testing people who are returning from some areas in spain — and more broadly it's seen a rise in the infection rate in the last week. the government's lead agency on the virus is warning that people have become negligent — and is urging social distancing, even when on holiday. this is its president.

translation: the latest results show that the coronavirus is considered by the population to be a lower risk than before. and that the acceptance of measures such as distancing rules has also decreased. at this point i would like to be very clear once again, we ourselves are largely responsible for determining how the disease will develop in germany. please help yourselves, all of you. continue to respect the rules. from europe to the us — it has the highest number of recorded cases by far. but it's important to use population to place america's numbers in context. this is from a covidi9 test on the bbc news website which asks you to order six countries according to number of deaths per 100,000 people. this is the correct answer. the us is fourth, the uk is has the highest death rate by this measure.

now to big furore in the us connected to covid19 — twitter has temporarily restricted the account of donald trumer — the president's son. he posted a video which makes false claims about the drug hydroxy—chloroquine as a treatment for the virus. the video has been watched millions of times was retweeted by president trump — but has now been taken down. this is a screenshot shared by an adviser to president trump. it shows us that twitter concluded that donald trumer had violated its policy on spreading "misleading and potentially harmful" information about coronavirus. the adviser writes "big tech is the biggest threat to free expression in america". trumersaid the video was different from the narrative that everybody was running with. yes — different and also factually incorrect. hydroxychloroquine is not considered an effective treatment against coronavirus. last month — the us food and drug administration revoked its emergency use authorisation for the drug.

here's more from our disinformation reporter marianna spring. what's interesting here is that it marks firstly what its battles towards misinformation on its platform and the attempt being made by social media sites to tackle possibly harmful claims being made about coronavirus. but then also it's an escalation in this battle that is going on between twitter and the trumps. and because since twitter began labelling donald trumps tweets either is misleading, inflammatory or otherwise, trump has hyped up his attacks on twitter and it's something i think we're going to see only getting more heated in the months to come.
