and chris fawkes has all the details. jane, we are talking about extreme heat building across the uk, temperatures reaching 33.5 celsius in london, temperatures continuing to rise. it looks like being one of the hottest august days we have seen in overa the hottest august days we have seen in over a decade, these are some recent august temperatures but the final temperature, much depends on this lump of cloud working across the channel at the moment. if that comes into london it. temperatures from rising much further and 36 degrees could be the highest temperature but if that cloud stays awake long enough i would not be surprised if we saw temperatures even higher than 36 but either way it will be very hot and humid this afternoon across england and wales. northern ireland and scotland cloudier and fresher, temperatures into the low 20s with rain around as well. this weather front pushing through the afternoon and into the first part of the night. further

south, after such a hot day, these aren't the minimum temperatures but the temperatures you might see going to bed at 11pm, look at that! 28 degrees in london, pretty difficult to get to sleep. we have something cold tropical nights on the way, this is for temperatures don't fall below 20 degrees across the uk, they used to be really rare, between 196! and 1990 they were eight of these but over the next few nights alone there are several candidates for these and that really is down climate heating and double warming, thatis climate heating and double warming, that is one of the things we are seeing here in the uk so it is happening. as far as the weather goes this weekend, in the uk, we are going to give a similar weather pattern, staying hot and humid in england and wales, very warm nights, warm sunshine for scotland and northern ireland but we have fresher airso it northern ireland but we have fresher air so it never gets that humid. saturday, lots of dry weather on the cards again, warm spells of sunshine for scotland and northern ireland, sunnier days all round, image is

pleasant, low 20s quite widely, further south it's hot and humid again, temperatures surging well into the mid 30s in terms of celsius through the afternoon. you might start to see some showers breaking out on sunday, one or two storms dotted around, i date many of us will have drier weather with spells of one sunshine, humid and hot in the south—east, temperatures again into the 30s, further north more co mforta ble into the 30s, further north more comfortable with fresher conditions. all eyes on the thermometer as we head through this afternoon, certainly extreme heat continuing to build. chris, thank you. a reminder of our top story... a record number of migrants are stopped trying to cross the english channel in one day. that's all from the bbc news at one — so it's goodbye from me — and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are. they are still up on their kind of low point injune, but it doesn't seem low point injune, but it doesn't seem they have risen any further. good afternoon.

it'sjust after 1.30pm, and here's your latest sports news. england have plenty to do on day three of the first test, they trail west indies by 167 runs at lunch with five wickets remaining. henry moeran joins us from old trafford. a lot hinges on the performance now ofjos butler who is at the crease. yes, his overnight partner, 0llie pope, the party for 62. that was the only wicket fell and the morning sessions. i think england will be satisfied with their performance. jos butler has been outstanding, he isa jos butler has been outstanding, he is a player who can crash the ball to the boundaries. this inning has been about hanging around, making sure he is there. a difficult performance behind the stumps but he has batted brilliantly. england need is partnership to keep going just so they can perhaps rain and a few of those runs and ensure the first
1:35 pm
innings deficit is not as big as it could be. england just innings deficit is not as big as it could be. englandjust clinging on. we know the ultimate ambition is for england to become the number one test side in world cricket. they beat the west indies. have pakistan prove they are a step up and england are perhaps not quite where they wa nt to are perhaps not quite where they want to be? i think is a difficult one tojudge. in want to be? i think is a difficult one to judge. in the summer, in such awkward positions, with england coming into this position was just playing three test matches. they have a little bit of that fatigue, whereas pakistan are completely fresh, they have had a warm up time here in england, perhaps more than they would normally have because of they would normally have because of the quarantine measures. they are fresh and ready to go. so how we judge england compared to pakistan is perhaps difficult at this stage. what we do know is that after the first test match ended two games and follow this one. england in first test matches and series are frankly
1:36 pm
appalling, let's not forget, they have lost a ludicrous amount in the last few years, including that first game against the west indies. it is not encouraging for england at the start of things, but let's see where we are in a couple of tests time. how is life in the bio bubble? all the fine. we have an takeaway being organised for us tonight. there is a ping—pong table in one of the executive suites. no doubt the competition will be highly competitive among the players tonight. it is a strange world, but anybody here would say that we are so anybody here would say that we are so fortunate to be watching test cricket. lots of fun clearly been hard, not just by cricket. lots of fun clearly been hard, notjust by your sales but the players as well. manchester city will hope to reach the last eight of the champions league tonight. they lead real madrid 2—1 going into the second—leg

genuine refugees should claim asylum player, not risk their lives and break the law by coming to the uk. she goes on to say: she adds: this is a recent thread from priti patelin this is a recent thread from priti patel in just the last few moments. we will keep you up—to—date with all of this, because we seen that yesterday was a record daily number of the number of people trying to ci’oss of the number of people trying to cross in small boats. there was a pregnant women among the hundreds that were trying to cross. i very
1:41 pm
large number of people already this year, getting on for 4000 people, this year who have tried to cross. we will bring you any more reaction that we get. we'll take a look specifically at coronavirus. it appears that cases of covid—i9 in homes in england may be levelling off. the office for national statistics estimates that 28,300 people had the virus last week — a figure which has been steadily rising since the end ofjune. robert cuffe is the bbc‘s head of statistics — he's been taking a look at the figures. they are still up on their kind of low point injune, but it doesn't seem they have risen any further. what they are saying is they estimate roughly about 28,300 people in england in homes are infected at the moment, and that is about i in 1900 people, so still a small number of people. that is up from its low point at the end ofjune
1:42 pm
when it was about 23,000 instead of 28,000, so there has been a rise since the pubs opened, but they have not seen the evidence this week the rise is continuing. it is kind of flattening off. they estimate there is about 3700 new infections in england every day, and for the first time they have included information from wales, and they think there are about 1400 infections at the moment in wales. that's about! in every 2200, so not that different to the rate in england, but a little bit lower. it will be mandatory for hospitality venues in scotland to collect customers information from next week. scotland's first minister nicola sturgeon also said people would be told to wear face coverings in museums, places of worship and libraries from tomorrow. after aberdeen 5 football match this weekend was postponed because of an outbreak at the club, she said some players had clearly broken the rules around football bubbles by attending a bar in the city.
1:43 pm
ican i can confirm that as of now, a total of 10! cases have been confirmed as part of that cluster. that's an increase of 22 on the position reported yesterday. a total of 313 close contacts have now been identified and are being followed up. we expect those numbers though to rise further. it was also confirmed yesterday that two players from aberdeen football club are amongst those who have tested positive. in addition, a further six players have been identified as having been in close proximity with one of those individuals. they are all therefore self—isolating. it is now clear that all eight of these players visited a bar in aberdeen on saturday night. in doing so, they blatantly broke the rules that had been agreed between the sfa, the spfl and the scottish government, which, to put it mildly, is completely unacceptable.
1:44 pm
this morning, the scottish government convened a meeting with the sfa and the spfl. following those discussions, the footballing authorities have confirmed that the game scheduled in perth tomorrow between aberdeen and saintjohnstone will now not go ahead. i think that is that the right decision. we are expecting members of the public to behave in a highly precautionary manner right now. when a football club ends up with players infected with covid, let's remember this is not through bad luck but through clear breaches of the rules, we cannot take even a small risk that they then spread the infection to other parts of the country. the scottish government will also be contacting all club captains and managers to emphasise the importance of complying with the guidance. let me take the opportunity to emphasise the importance of that directly now. football has been given the go—ahead on the strict condition that clubs and players abide by the guidance that has been agreed.
1:45 pm
if they don't do that, they put at risk the return of the professional game. so i welcome aberdeen's statement that they have reminded players of their obligations. that is important. footballers are role models and they should behave accordingly. it is also important to remind the club, indeed all clubs, of the obligation that they have to ensure that their players are behaving responsibly and in line with the guidance. we now intend to make it mandatory for a range of settings, including hospitality businesses, to collect customer details. that requirement is already in guidance but it will now be placed on a statutory footing. it will help to ensure that oui’ footing. it will help to ensure that our test and protect system can function as effectively as possible. second, we intend to issue new statutory guidance relating to end oui’ statutory guidance relating to end our hospitality. we will set out more detail of this next week, but the aim is to ensure greater compliance of the key public health measures, like physical distancing, and we work with scotland and at

local environmental health team is to explain these measures, and if necessary e nfo rce to explain these measures, and if necessary enforce compliance. both these changes will take effect from next friday, and they will help to clarify exactly what is required from hospitality. iwant clarify exactly what is required from hospitality. i want to emphasise that businesses should already be doing these things. if you're not, don't wait till next week, star compliant now. premises should be collecting and keeping contact details whenever possible, people should be asked to pre—book ta bles people should be asked to pre—book tables in advance, and there should be no queueing. people should be suited only with table service. customers should not be standing together to watch football, dancing oi’ together to watch football, dancing or queueing at the bar. this should not be queueing outside either. in any circumstances where it is unavoidable, those in queues should be physically distant. we are also asking that there is no background music or volume from televisions. it is really important in terms of minimising the risk of transmitting on as wider is that people are not

having to shout to each other or lea n having to shout to each other or lean in in order to be heard. as we come further out of lockdown, the risks are high 10— more people often about, more places opened and more people gathering together. as a precautionary mother, we are expanding the range of outdoor premises where people must wear a face covering. from tomorrow, i will include libraries, museums and places of worship. you can find more detail on the scottish government website. i can also confirm today that we are updating our guidance on face advisories. based on the latest scientific evidence, we are not an event that a face visors on its own provide sufficient protection to the wearer or other. from tomorrow, if a visor is worn, it must be accompanied by another type of face covering. italy was the first european country to be badly affected by the outbreak. now, its borders are open,
