we have had two seasons in one day. it has been stormy and northern ireland through the day with gusts of wind close to 60 mph and a rash of wind close to 60 mph and a rash of sharp, thundery downpours. by contrast, lovely summer sunshine across eastern england and temperatures peaking in east anglia and parts of kent at 26 degrees. that is the high 70s. it looks like the gales will win the battle through tomorrow. and very windy day with sunshine and showers pretty much for everyone. because of this low pressure moving in. it will bring gusts of wind up to - 70 low pressure moving in. it will bri the usts of wind up to - 70 low pressure moving in. it will bri the coast f wind up to - 70 low pressure moving in. it will bri the coast f wi thereto i be i e if you 4 ' " if you are 4 ' " if you are spending ' " if you are spending the ' " under canvas, i know, and the night under canvas, i know, and the showers look pretty frequent as they spread northwards tomorrow morning.
6:31 pm
the shower is easing off into the afternoon but it is worth stressing tomorrow the story is about the winds. the strongest of the winds across england and wales, in excess of 50 mph inland, 60 to 65 on exposed coasts so that is going to be enough potentially to cause disruption. showers will ease a touch and actually it will be an odd one into the afternoon because despite the strength of the winds, temperatures will still reach 25 degrees. you might feel like you are ina hairdryer! degrees. you might feel like you are in a hairdryer! as we move into saturday it will be a breezy day, the wind slowly easing, and showers around. hopefully lighter winds for the second half of the weekend. louise, thank you very much. that's all from the bbc news at six so it's goodbye from me and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are.
6:32 pm
hello, i'm 0lly foster. you are watching bbc news. here's what's coming up on sportsday this evening. the first women's golf major of the year is wide open at royal troon. the fixtures are out for the premier league season, and the champions will face some other champions also coming up in the programme... the teenage track star from yorkshire who's looking to make his name on the world stage this weekend. just don't mention 0vett, cram or coe. i say i've never had any sort of i and sport, i always wanted to focus on me and what i can do and
6:33 pm
what i can do better. good evening. the last groups are still out on the course in the women's open. it's been a really challenging opening round at royal troon. it's a strong field despite a few absentees because of the pandemic but all have struggled with the really windy conditions. here's our sports correspondent katie gornall. with another door opening to women golfers, there is really only one player to get things started. this was laura davies a0 at in this championship, few players have shaped a game like her. yet this is new territory. the first time a women's major has been held here at
6:34 pm
royal troon, the conditions were far from welcoming. for many, including charlie hull, she would battle to finish the day on five over. her domestic rival georgia hall knows just what it takes to win this tournament. catching her eye on the way to an incredible round with two over. i said to my caddie, everyone watching them go into the first tee, i really miss that i miss my friends and family. but i know they are all cheering at home and i'm really grateful that we can even play a major. but it was another former champion, 50—year—old catriona matthew, leading the british charge on day one. rolling back the years to royal troon. it on day one. rolling back the years to royaltroon. it was on day one. rolling back the years to royal troon. it was a on day one. rolling back the years to royaltroon. it was a real on day one. rolling back the years to royal troon. it was a real battle over there. even coming to royal troon. it was a real battle overthere. even coming back to royal troon. it was a real battle over there. even coming back is no bargain, soi over there. even coming back is no bargain, so i have taken even par before i started. but no one had a better day than american amy 0lson.
6:35 pm
ina year better day than american amy 0lson. in a year blighted by coronavirus, this is the most significant golf tournament to be staged at britain. for now, these players have the spotlight to themselves. katie gornall, bbc news. we'll be live at royal troon later. meanwhile, the men's european tour is in wales at the moment, the welsh open at celtic manor, jordan smith, who got one european tour victory to his name is in the lead at the moment. six birdies for him. in his opening round of 66. he's five under in the clubhouse. looks a bit windy there as well. thomas bjorn is in the field there, europe's triumphant ryder cup captain from two years ago in france. and he might be excused for having a shaky opening round, because he walked all the way from wentworth golf course in surrey with the ryder cup, a 210—kilometre trek over four days to raise money for golf charities.
6:36 pm
i caught up with him to talk about the state of the sport, and his feet! 210 from first day to sunday, it was a bigger challenge than i thought it would be. but! a bigger challenge than i thought it would be. but i guess anything good, it has to be a challenge. my feet are all right. it's more of the sessions than anything. they are taking a bit of a beating. they're recovering slowly. i think all sports have struggled to get back to some kind of normality, putting fixtures back in the calendar. as we see with football at the moment, it's not the elites top level that is the worry. it's the damage that might have been done to the grassroots coming through, and golf is no different. we have to get back
6:37 pm
to some sort of normality. sport is obviously part of our lives. it's not the most essential part of our lives, but it is a certain part of oui’ lives, but it is a certain part of our life and it can be a lot of ways how we do it. don't forget this is not about 200 golfers getting back to doing their work, it's about all the people around. it's about our staff, our media, thousands of people that are defending will not depending on the european tour and that helps them —— depending on. that can hopefully lead to the system that we get people back to working and doing things differently, but getting them back to do theirjob. it's been a criticism across sport that the women's game, whatever the sport is, has been neglected. some sports have been slow to hold that side. do you think golfers got it right with the
6:38 pm
women's side of things? we are so divided in our sport, the pga tour in the european tour in the men's tour, and they are there own institutes. so it's very much up to the tours themselves to drive forward to get the game back. i think it's nice to see that the women's game is back. in the past, definitely not been put enough support in women's sports across the board. that needs to improve, not just in golf, but in all sports. thomas, we see in a couple weeks tennis, the us open. a lot of people not wanting to travel to the us. we still have the masters coming up in november. do you think that could be a very depleted field in the masters? it so difficult to tell because it so far in the future. i think it's in the beginning of
6:39 pm
november. you just have to sit back and wait before you can really make decisions at the moment about what's happening in the next two or three 01’ happening in the next two or three orfour happening in the next two or three or four weeks. happening in the next two or three orfour weeks. nobody is in control of the virus and nobody is in control of what's going to happen. i think that's the most important, we stay in control of what we can control, and that is to listen to the guidance and adhere to. thomas bjorn is a huge liverpool fan, and the fixtures were released today for the new premier league season. it kicks off on the weekend of september the 12th, with the champions taking on championship winners leeds united. there's also a london derby between newly promoted fulham and arsenal, and the other team coming up, west brom, are home to leicester. here's the other opening games. the two matches involving manchester clubs will be rearranged, giving their players a decent break because they were involved in european competitions. the matches will still be behind
6:40 pm
closed doors to begin with, but i spoke to two fans earlier about the season, lauren black from liverpool and leeds supporter heidi haigh. i suppose it was probably best to be that way, to be honest. it feels like we've never been away, but in reality i know it's been such a long time. it's good to see us back. we got nothing to lose. we've been the underdog more than often, but at the end of the day, we can go out with no pressure on us. end of the day, we can go out with no pressure on us. play fantastic football, play to our strengths and let everybody else worry about us when we enter the top regardless. before leeds, you have arsenal in the community shield obviously. after the leeds game, you have arsenal again, you've got chelsea. it's a tough old start to see exactly what shape juergen clock‘s tea m exactly what shape juergen clock‘s team is in. yeah, it's a tough
