good evening and welcome to tonight's programme. it's been a momentous 2a hours in the history of us sport. as some of the country's biggest stars stage a boycott in protest against the shooting of a black man in wisconsin. it started with the nba as last night's three play—off games were postponed when the milwaukee bucks refused to play. while baseball, the mls and tennis have all seen athletes take action. nesta mcgregor reports. boycotting tonight's game. an empty nba arena. no fans because of covid—19, no players on the court because of jacob blake, an unarmed black man shot by police in wisconsin on sunday. we have seen horrendous video

ofjacob blake being shot seven times in the back by a police officer in kenosha. the additional shooting of protesters, despite the overwhelming need for change, there's been no action. so our focus today cannot be basketball. in the wnba, this silent protest. then, across major league soccer, baseball and tennis, similar messages from athletes. these protests are not just about jacob blake. for many decades, sport has played a role in demanding change. four years ago, quarterback colin kaepernick took a knee during the us national anthem. he was heavily criticised and hasn't played again since. a pose that is now replicated across sport and the world in recent years. with the nba season in doubt, there are huge implications for its reputation and finances.

a global brand which generates billions of pounds each year. its owners are influential in sport and in the political make—up of the us. although athletes appear to believe it is that pressure which could act as a catalyst for their demands. it's amazing to me. why we keep loving this country and this country does not love us back. and it's just... it's really so sad. i could just be a coach. and it's so often reminded of my colour. you know? it's just really sad. we've got to do better. if the nba season is called off, all eyes then turn towards other sports. the nfl, the us open tennis. black players leading a sporting blackout.
