and i also keeping us all say. and i also commend the hospitals and the ambulance service as well for the work that they have done as well. i note that the enquiries will be very thorough, and i appreciate the reasons why thorough, and i appreciate the reasons why more thorough, and i appreciate the reasons why more data cannot be given at the moment. i am sure the chief superintendent will be passing out detail to the media as it becomes available, and as a becomes appropriate within the context of the enquiries. police will be taking tough action and we will be reviewing this with birmingham city council, as well, as to any further measures that may need to be taken in the city centre. we are well used on our friday and saturday night to activity, but i think what is different is the randomness of this particular event, but also a number of other events happening as well, the amount of
11:31 am
violence that was happening, is a chilly very, very disturbing. i have been saying for some time in the context of covid—i9, that a lot of pent—up feelings that people have and not being able to get out, combine that with people who are now unsure about their future, their jobs, it was almost inevitable that we would see a growth in violence. i'm not saying that this is directly related to that, but nevertheless we are seeing now a group of violence amongst younger people, particularly younger males, we are saying that growing across the region. my fear is that if we don't address that and some of the underlying problems with some of the underlying problems with some urgency, then we could see that grow. notwithstanding that, birmingham isa grow. notwithstanding that, birmingham is a good place, a good place to be, as safe city and it is reg retta ble place to be, as safe city and it is regrettable that we have this awful
11:32 am
incident happened last night. i'm sure that will deter people from coming into the city centre either to work, shop orjust to enjoy themselves as they usually do. again, thank you chief superintendent, for your staff, your officers on what you have done, but again, iecho officers on what you have done, but again, i echo what the chief superintendent said, i urge people to come forward if they have information or if they see something, or if they see something oi’ something, or if they see something or somebody who is suspicious in the coming days, then to immediately report that to the police. thank you. are there any questions?
11:33 am
so, just to recap on what has been said so far by the police, that one person has died in that series of stabbings in birmingham city centre, at four locations in the city centre. five people have minor injuries and having been discharged from hospital. the police were saying there is one suspect that largely they are trying to locate, appealing for anyone in the area at the time for information, or for any video footage that they may have filmed. all the four crime scenes have been cordoned off and evidence has been gathered at the scene. the message to people in birmingham is
11:34 am
do not be afraid to go into the city centre, it is safe. they have put a lot more police into the city centre, both armed and unarmed. they are not saying birmingham is in —— is an unsafe place to be. let's listening now to the ambulance service, as well. last night, at approximately round about midnight, we had a large number of ambulance resources sent to birmingham city centre in relation to a number of stabbing incidents which continued up stabbing incidents which continued up to and including 2am. we've received multiple calls over various locations over and a half. the initial call was round about 12:1i0am. we were able to sent 14 ambulances, ii paramedic officers,
11:35 am
including myself. we also is sent to hazardous area response team, for critical care teams with doctors and critical care teams with doctors and critical care teams with doctors and critical care paramedics. a team of stjohn‘s almonds critical care paramedics. a team of st john's almonds volunteers critical care paramedics. a team of stjohn‘s almonds volunteers who we re stjohn‘s almonds volunteers who were working around the city centre also provided treatment for patients. ambulance staff treated seven patients, five were taken to the new queen elizabeth hospital in birmingham. three had suffered critical injuries and sadly one man had lost his life. our thoughts are with those families and friends who are affected with those families and friends who a re affected by with those families and friends who are affected by this incident, which is completely and utterly tragic. two further patients were transported to heartlands hospital and an outpatient with minor
11:36 am
injuries was not transported with the ambulance assets. the trust went into major incident stand by, then we deployed further ambulances to the scene. senior officers were also sent to your headquarters at millennium point, including a chief executive, and we were able to coordinate the trust response along with our partners to ensure that we got maximum response to a very traumatic incident. as i have already said, our thoughts across the whole of the west midlands and my personal thoughts are with anyone who has been affected by this incident and i would like to pay tribute to everybody that attempted last night, including our ambulance staff, that did a really good, professionaljob in very, very extreme circumstances. we do train ha rd extreme circumstances. we do train hard for these incidents, we do this ona hard for these incidents, we do this on a regular basis, and we are
11:37 am
pleased with the way we conducted the response to last night. thank you. i will take any questions. as this incident unfolded last night, presumably the crews were met with an ever more horrifying series of calls. are you able to give us an idea of what the crews have reported back to you, what they have seen, some details? unfortunately, on our streets across the whole west country, stabbing incidents are not a rare occurrence. we did have a number of stabbings that occurred over a very tight timeframe last night. the one thing that was difficult about the incident was around for the five locations. with
11:38 am
those five locations and the way it progressed through, we continually updated our cruise on the radios to make sure we were sending out safe messages. monitored forfurther incidents across the whole of the city centre to make sure we were to keep them safe, which is one of our primary concerns. also, we were able to debrief the crews afterwards to make sure they were completely supported. it is a big thing for us to do and it is something that we do ona to do and it is something that we do on a regular basis, to make sure they are completely supported. we have specialist assets there that could deal with any mass casualties that could occur. they have specialist equipment to be able to treat people within those areas that we needed to go in to treat those patients. you said five locations, the police said four. two locations
11:39 am
we re the police said four. two locations were quite close. you could say that one of the incidence was very close so you could count that as one. fine, yes. we were there quite quickly. by all accou nts we were there quite quickly. by all a ccou nts we we were there quite quickly. by all accounts we were there within minutes. we have lost the link to that news conference, but it was pretty much winding up. let's sum up what we have been hearing from the police, the ambulance and the crime commissioner, that police say there was a series of stabbings in birmingham city centre last night, just after midnight. four different locations. a series of random stabbings. they are looking for one
11:40 am
person who they haven't yet apprehended, but do stabbings have left one person dead, to critically ill. five others have suffered minor injuries and some of them have been discharged from hospital. the police are saying that there is no suggestion this was terror —related, no suggestion it was a hate crime, although one of the areas was near a 93v although one of the areas was near a gay area in the city of birmingham and no suggestion that it was gang related. they are pursuing one suspect, a man, and they are appealing for any information from people who were in the area at the time or he may have taken any video footage to get in touch with them. we can speak now to the labour mp for birmingham ladywood — the constituency in which the incident took place —
11:41 am
shabana mahmood. was this one individual going on a rampage in the city centre?m was this one individual going on a rampage in the city centre? it does science like that after what the police have insane, but we can't yet speculate as to motive behind these attacks, but they are clearly linked and it is only one suspect that the police are looking for, so it does sound as if somebody has gone on a stabbing spree across the city, moving from north, constitution hill area, to south, hurst street. it is deeply worrying for everybody in the city, particularly those who live and work in the parts of the city that are affected. at first and foremost, my thoughts and those of everybody else, are with the man who died, his family, and all of those who have been injured. our hearts
11:42 am
and minds around them. superintendent steve graham was saying that people will be concerned that this man has not been apprehended yet. he was saying that birmingham city centre is not u nsafe, birmingham city centre is not unsafe, do not be afraid, he said, because we are putting in increased presence of police officers, both armed and unarmed. do you welcome that? yes, i do. you wake up to this sort of news somebody from birmingham, it is terrible news to look up to, devastating for all those who have been affected, and knowing that the suspect is still at large is obviously a real concern. it is of concern to me as a constituency member of parliament, and everybody else in the city, as well. i would reiterate what the police have said. they have drafted an additional police officers. there are officers both armed and unarmed
11:43 am
across the city centre and i am confident that the policing presence and the fact that the investigation is moving at pace, means that we very much hope the suspect is courts before long, but in the meantime, i would urge all people from birmingham who want to go to the city centre to be vigilant. if you see anything, you must call the police. if you have heard anything, you must call the police. otherwise, go about your business a safely and with as much vigilant as well. shabana mahmood, thank you. we will get back into the press conference from birmingham. let's hear more what the police and ambulance service have been saying. as soon as we have the sort of details, then we will be circulating that, sharing it more broadly. thank you very much,
11:44 am
everyone , more broadly. thank you very much, everyone, for attending. we will put out updates as and when we have them. thank you. that is the end of that news conference. shabana mahmood, mp for birmingham ladywood, we we re mahmood, mp for birmingham ladywood, we were hearing from the police and crime commissioner there he was talking about the impact of lockdown psychologically on people in birmingham, especially younger males, he said. is there any possible link between the effects of lockdown and these horrific events in the city centre last night? well, as david and chief superintendent stephen graham said we can't speculate as to the motive of this particular attack, but certainly the police, the local authority, myself and others in the city have been discussing over the last few weeks are concerns about the effects of
11:45 am
the lockdown and the pandemic on the city and its young people in particular. we have been concerned this might lead to an increase in violent crime, people with pent—up frustrations coming into a territory where organised crime can recruit. we have been discussing this and trying to get ahead of it. we don't know if that is the reason why this attack is taken place, it would be inappropriate at this stage to speculate on the motives of that, but it is true to say that all of the relevant authorities in the city have been concerned. we are the younger city in europe in my constituency is the home of most of the city young people, so it is something that is very much on our radar. it has been on our my radar all summer. we haven't had a major incident like this before, although we have had other incidents, they
11:46 am
haven't spilled over into the most serious category just yet, haven't spilled over into the most serious categoryjust yet, but it is something that is of concern, of course. the police were asking people who were in the city centre, and it sounds like there were a lot of people out having a good time on saturday nights in the city centre, appealing for anyone who may have seen of these horrific events to get in touch. would you reinforce that appeal to the general public in birmingham? yes, i absolutely would. last night by all reports, from people i have spoken to on the ground, last night was probably the busiest night we have had in the city centre since the lockdown, so lots of people right eating and enjoying themselves, as is absolutely right. lots of people will have been out with their phones, taking pictures for their own social media, so i would ask
11:47 am
them to trawl through their own pictures that it took last night we re pictures that it took last night were any videos that they took when they were out and please share that with the police to produce anything. if you do have any information of any description, whether pictures or videos on your phone, please get in touch with the police because it is important that they have every bit of information as we try to get the suspect, he is currently at large. shabana mahmood, thank you for being with us on this very sad day for the city of birmingham. our correspondent phil mackie is in birmingham. pieced together for us what the police are saying happened last night, if you could. the headlines are that the person died last night over a stab wound. two more people are still critically ill in hospital
11:48 am
and five other people were injured with less serious injuries. this appears to have happened as a random attack by a single male suspect, he is still at large. it began just to the north of the city centre at constitution hill at around 12:30am. over the next hour and a half, two hours, that single suspect has travelled through the city centre and add four or five different locations stabbed other people. as i say, that man is still at large. there is a heavy uniformed police presence in the city today. that is merely for reassurance, but they are obviously still trying to get this particular suspect into custody as soon as possible. they have asked people coming into the city centre to still be alert. we also heard from the west midlands ambulance, who talked about what was happening from their point of view. lots of staff out, paramedics, said john sabin inside helping them as well.
11:49 am
they said they have trained long and ha rd they said they have trained long and hard for incidents like this and are pleased with the way they responded, but he talked about it being a very extreme circumstance last night. we heard from the west midlands police and crime commissioner, who talked about the dreadful events of last night. i have been speaking to him for the last six months, since lockdown he has been concerned that all the pent up feelings and aggression that we have seen, especially in the younger population ina big especially in the younger population in a big city like this, they may spill over into violence. we refer to that again. the key message from the police as anybody he was out last night needs to get in touch, especially if they took any pictures orfilmed any especially if they took any pictures or filmed any footage because that would help them with their investigation. there is lots of cctv footage for them to go through, but the key thing now is to track this person down, the person who has
11:50 am
killed one person and seriously injured a number of others. killed one person and seriously injured a number of othersm killed one person and seriously injured a number of others. it isn't yet clear what the motivation for these random attacks, but the police saying it wasn't a terror —related crime, not a hate crime, not gang related, but we still don't know what motivated these attacks?m related, but we still don't know what motivated these attacks? it was a busy night in birmingham. people are going out again. the particular area around hurst street is really busy. there are a lot of clubs, restau ra nts a nd bars busy. there are a lot of clubs, restaurants and bars down there. there was some violence going on, as well. they say it was not related to that, this was a single suspect. until they managed to get the suspect into custody, they will know if there was any motive for this. they have ruled out what could have
11:51 am
been suspects. it was in the gay quarter near chinatown, so that could have been a racist element. they say it was not a hate crime motive. nor are terrorism —related incident. i guess we are at the early stages of what is a major investigation. they have promised more details later on. when they have one they will be giving out a description of the suspect they are looking for. phil, thank you very much. earlier on bbc news, we heard from cara, a bar worker in the area — she described what she saw. working in a club for over two yea rs, working in a club for over two years, and the club scene, i have a lwa ys years, and the club scene, i have always seen quite a lot of fights and drunken commotions, but there was nothing quite like tonight. just the body language and demeanour of people was so much difference. tell
11:52 am
us people was so much difference. tell usa people was so much difference. tell us a bit about the area in which you work? i work in the acadian centre, which is the hotspot of clubs. it is where five main clubs are in birmingham. iwork where five main clubs are in birmingham. i work in the club directly at the start of arcadia, by the gay village, and around the area of the food bars and pubs in birmingham. have you often felt threatened or intimidated ? birmingham. have you often felt threatened or intimidated? the picture we are getting is of quite a fee braille atmosphere, if you like. a lot of hostility and aggression that built during the course of the evening. i have never actually felt threatened while working on my night out, due to the fact that security is always very high. i always have a security guard within a two metre
11:53 am
reach of me. i always keep on a headset, which means i am always in touch with the security officers. but tonight, the amount of people that were out, especially during coronavirus, was absolutely insane. the whole of arcadian was full, so you didn't actually know who was around you and at what time. because of how quickly it escalated, and the words that produced, and how fight started and ended, it was nothing like i had ever seen before. that was an eyewitness to the violence in birmingham last night. the police we re birmingham last night. the police were telling us one person has died after a series of random knife attacks in the city centre. two people are still critically ill in hospital and five others have also been injured. the police are searching for one male suspect, who

they believe was responsible for those attacks in the city centre. parts of the united states' west coast are experiencing a record heatwave. california declared a state of emergency on friday amid warnings that power cuts could be implemented to meet excessive demand. temperatures of up to 49 degrees celsius are expected throughout the labor day holiday weekend. jason stiff is chief meteorolgist for action news now and spoke to us about the record temperatures. we are still in the mid—80s fahrenheit, it is not killing off. there have been more large fires well to our site that are broken out this afternoon. at creek fire has exploded in size. it has trapped several dozen people at a camp ground and they are trying to evacuate them quickly, but we have the fires, the smoke, we have the
