that there had been an antibody cocktail infused into the president and that that had gone well without incident, and you are thinking, they are doing various bits of treatments now, this is all quite normal, and then suddenly we got word that, actually, he may be on his way to walter reed hospital. you can probably hear the whirring noise in the background to where i'm standing i'iow. the background to where i'm standing now. that is marine one on the south lawn, waiting to ferry the president a short distance north to the army medical centre, the military medical centre, and the white house has its owi'i centre, and the white house has its own medical centre, the white house has doctors and nurses working around the clock, they have a very well—equipped surgery here. why is it that they feel they cannot do whatever is necessary here and that he needs to go to walter reed? i think that is one of the questions that people are going to a light on and say maybe there's more to this than meets the eye and maybe there

age is the biggest risk factorfor covid—i9. in the united states, eight out of ten deaths have been among the over—65s. the risk of dying for somebody aged 65 to 7a is 90 times higher than for someone in their 20s. to put that in context, a recent international study found that once infected with coronavirus, the chances of dying were around one in 100 at age 65, one in 25 at 75, and one in seven at 85. the president and first lady of the united states... the first lady, melania trump, is just 50, 2a years younger than donald trump, and physically fit, so her risk from covid should be low. the president is six foot three and weighs more than 17 stone, putting him in the obese category — another red flag. his medical team will be

and there are treatments now which have helped improve survival rates for what can be a brutal disease. fergus walsh, bbc news. it's understood the president is receiving experimental antibody treatment. let's speak to arthur caplan, director of medical ethics at new york university grossman school of medicine. welcome to you. thanks very much for being with us. before we talk about this treatment, i want to ask you about your thoughts about the president being moved to the walter reed medical centre, because we understand that there is a very well—equipped medical unit within the white house itself, fully staffed with a team of doctors. why do you think that his medical team would have taken that decision to move them to a hospital at this stage? i think my guess is it is because his symptoms are worsening and he is in such a high risk group, as you just reported, that they want to be safe, so even other is a medical unit at the white house, it

is not a hospital and if you started to show more lethargy, more fever, if they are also looking at it in a 74—year—old man, ithink if they are also looking at it in a 74—year—old man, i think that is what is going on. they are concerned. and as you said, they're giving him experience antibodies which also they would not do if they we re which also they would not do if they were not pretty worried. tell us more. it is a single dose of regeneron, we understand he had a. this is a non-approved medicine, if you will. you take immune building cells that you manufacture, this is not the same as getting the transfusion from someone who has had the disease. it is artificially manufacturing those same chemicals. hopefully you build up same chemicals. hopefully you build up the resistance in the person and they are better able to fight off they are better able to fight off the virus. but experimental, unproven, in clinical trials,

the virus. but experimental, unproven, in clinicaltrials, looks promising but not yet approved by our fda. who have taken the decision to go ahead with an experimental, non—approved drug on the president of the united states? his doctors, and his doctors would've had to make and his doctors would've had to make a request to the company, regeneron, for compassionate use. they would have to decide that, yes, the president cannot be put in a clinical trial, he has got the infection, he seems to be slipping. we are going to move quickly and allow that to happen. it is his doctors making the request to. and what are they weighing up here, the potential benefits of a drug which has not been approved with what possible side effects? there is some information on this intervention, these antibodies do seem to help if you use them early, so they are thinking about that, but there can a lwa ys thinking about that, but there can always be damage to the kidneys if you have unknown consequences of any

spare mental medicine, they have to wait that. what they are thinking is symptoms starting to show probably worse, high—risk person age wise, size wise, let's trade the experiments on medicine, and that indicates real concern to me. we understand that the president also has been given a cocktail of other drugs, including vitamin d, zinc. what do you understand about what else he is receiving? things like vitamins, there is not much evidence that make any difference to the course of covid in anybody. it can't hurt, they are known to be safe and i don't think they are particular helpful. there are some steroid drugs known to be helpless your lungs begin to fail, and i'm sure those are lined up. the president of the united states is not you or me. they are going to be able to get any or every agent they think might help and do so in ways that ordinary citizens might not be up to access.

it is the engines turning, at the moment we cannot see it, but this is the moment two days ago no one at the moment two days ago no one at the white house could have foreseen, in any circumstances, that marine one would have been taking president trump to the walter reed medical ce ntre trump to the walter reed medical centre in northern washington, in maryland, to bethesda, and the helicopter has now departed. donald trump has left the white house, he is on his way to hospital out of an abundance of cautions, the white house is a saying, but an awful lot of unanswered questions as to why the situation has changed so dramatically, so quickly from mild symptoms to the need to hospital for the next few days. that is what we understand is going to happen once he arrives. he will be put in a private suite, of course, as you would expect and he will be kept there for a few days but we don't know very much about what is going to happen once he arrives, do we?

there are going to be presumably adequate test undertaking and presumably test they cannot perform in the white house, where there is a fully equipped medical unit and there is another medical unit in the building across from where i am standing. they have office decided it needs the full panoply of a quick and you having a major hospital —— they have obviously decided. that is why, presumably, he has gone here. there are a lot a lot of questions i do not know the answer to and it would be aaron's speculation as to what condition he is in —— errant speculation. we are just about to receive pictures of president trump walking out of the white house, unassisted, wearing a mask as he boards the helicopter. i think we have not gotten quite yet. the optics of this are crucial for a president who at all times wants to appear strong and in control. yeah.

temporarily transfer his powers to the vice president while he went under the knife. that is something president trump is not done, the white house making very clear he is still in control, and that he will be undergoing tests here over the next couple of days. it has been reported that this decision might have been taken quite quickly because mr pentz, the vice president was on a call that the president would convalesce at the white house and, on the advice of medical experts, they have brought him here to be as possible —— mr pence. brought him here to be as possible -- mr pence. as you said, the hospital has received hospitals in the past, but they will have to scribble pretty quick with only about an hour's warning. do we know what kind of preparation they have to put in place to prepare for him? they have not delivered any details of that nature, but as i said, they do have an executive switch

walked to the helicopter from the white house, but here, we don't know what the procedure will be. what we do know is that in executive suite has been prepared for him. we saw him walk onto marine one on the south lawn of the white house, a walk of about 50 yards. he looked totally fine, he walked by himself, unaided and that he waved a couple of times, he gave a thumbs up sign a couple of times. because the president has tested positive and is infected with the coronavirus, he was wearing a mask and the people who were company him, including medical personnel, ready distance. it was interesting, they entered the back of the helicopter, he entered the front of the helicopter. you do not see the president wearing a mask, but this around, he did. that walk from the door of the white house to the door of marine one was
