11:00 pm
this is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. president donald trump is to be moved to hospital for treatment after being diagnosed with coronavirus. a helicopter is standing by at the white house. president trump has already been treated with an antibody cocktail and vitamins. his doctors earlier said he was fatigued but in good spirits. his rival in next month's election, joe biden, is on the campaign trail, where he reminded americans that they all have their part to play in getting the virus under control. so be patriotic. it's not about being a tough guy, it's about doing your part. wearing a mask is not only going to protect you, but it also protects those around you.
11:01 pm
hello and welcome if you're watching in the uk or around the world. do stay with us for the latest news and analysis from here and across the globe. the white house says president trump will spend a few days in hospital after contracting the coronavirus as a precautionary measure. this is the scene live at the helicopter, marine one, ready to ta ke helicopter, marine one, ready to take president trump to walter reed military hospital in washington. earlier, the president's doctor released a statement saying mr trump was fatigued but in good spirits. he has been receiving an experimental antibody cocktail to treat his covid—19 infection. the doctor's statement also said the president would continue to work. i'm joined now by katty kay in washington.
11:02 pm
the situation moving fast and this development that the president needs a good hospital seems to have taken ever by surprise. yes, it did. it is 1am when the present was diagnosed or it was announced he was agnes with the coronavirus. during the course of the day, the method we have had an statement on the record from the white house is that he had mild symptoms, he was fatigued, and i was pretty much it, and so then suddenly, the news broke about half an hourago suddenly, the news broke about half an hour ago that president trump was would be fun by that helicopter you can see there on your screens up to walter reed medical hospital. it is just outside washington, dc, in bethesda, maryland, and he will stay there, we understand, for a few days. it's being described as a move being taken out of an abundance of caution. the white house says he will be moved into an executive suite, that he will be able to work, that there is not could be any
11:03 pm
tra nsfer of that there is not could be any transfer of power, president trump is good to be in charge of the country. i have to say, that is not the news we had been expecting, given with the white house had told us given with the white house had told us about his condition during the day, that he was basically fine, with mild symptoms and only fatigue. let's go to the white house and are north america editorjohn semple is there. ——jon —— jon sopel is there. this news coming isa —— jon sopel is there. this news coming is a bit of a shock given the white house had said during the course of the day that the president only had mild symptoms and was just what was being called fatigued. why are they moving him now?|j what was being called fatigued. why are they moving him now? i suspect it is the speed of it that a lot of people are going to find absolutely dizzying. the diagnosis came at 1am this morning, a medical bulletin saying he had mild symptoms. that came from mark meadows, the chief of staff to the president. we had a bit more of a medical bulletin saying
11:04 pm
that there had been an antibody cocktail infused into the president and that that had gone well without incident, and you are thinking, they are doing various bits of treatments now, this is all quite normal, and then suddenly we got word that, actually, he may be on his way to walter reed hospital. you can probably hear the whirring noise in the background to where i'm standing i'iow. the background to where i'm standing now. that is marine one on the south lawn, waiting to ferry the president a short distance north to the army medical centre, the military medical centre, and the white house has its owi'i centre, and the white house has its own medical centre, the white house has doctors and nurses working around the clock, they have a very well—equipped surgery here. why is it that they feel they cannot do whatever is necessary here and that he needs to go to walter reed? i think that is one of the questions that people are going to a light on and say maybe there's more to this than meets the eye and maybe there
11:05 pm
is something else to this. but as you also said, which i think is really important, they are not invoking article 25, section three of the constitution, which hands over power on a of the constitution, which hands over power on a temporary basis to the vice president. donald trump or means in charge, is the message that the white house are very keen to put out this evening —— donald trump are means in charge. jon sopel there at the white house for us. let's go to bethesda, maryland. barbara plett usher is there. that is were the helicopters going to land, barbara. what are you hearing about what conditions he is going to be held in while he's up there, kept in ball he's up there? this is a hospital which has facilities for a president, actually for it is the flagship army centre
11:06 pm
or medical centre, or has been until recently, and presidents have been treated here before, the white house making the point there is an executive suite here were he can stay in he can work. they are presenting it, saying that he is not seriously ill, but out of an abundance of caution, or to be clearly careful, thereby bring him here and have them undergo tests, but they say he will continue to work, that they have been working from the white house this afternoon, taking calls at soda thing, so that is how they are presenting —— taking calls and that sort of thing. that is why they're taking this sudden decision to move him from the white house to the walter reed hospital because what they had been saying earlier as he would convalesce at the white house and now he will be taking a detour from that. barbara plett usher there outside the walter
11:07 pm
reed medical facility. plett usher there outside the walter reed medicalfacility. let's talk now to anthony zurcher. i have just been texting with a former white house official, asking whether they knew anything about why the president was being moved, and what i heard back is that there is a concern they cannot treat him well enough at home, butjust to reiterate whatjon was saying, there are medicalfacilities in the reiterate whatjon was saying, there are medical facilities in the white house and it is a very short helicopter ride from the white house to walter reed medical facilities, so you would think that they could make that move later if the president's condition deteriorated. you would think so. when we last spoke, we talked about a trust deficit this white house has with the press and the public with statements in the past that proved do not necessarily be all the way troop, but you have to remember last november, the president took a surprise trip to that very hospital
11:08 pm
where barber is, walter reed. staff at the hospital had not been given advance notice any white house explained at the time as being part ofa explained at the time as being part of a routine physical, and advanced checkup for his physical, that it wasn't accrued to any kind of standard particles were these things are announced far in advance —— standard particles. it does raise concerns the white house is not being worth coming out the president's condition. do you think, anthony, we will hear anything from a white house official on camera? would you expect them to make some kind of clarification or to questions from the press? all i can speak for past administrations, ortheir —— where there has been the job of the press shop to keep the media and public as informed as possible, to keep rumours from spreading, particularly in the age of social
11:09 pm
media where it is easy for conspiracy theories or ideas about what is actually happening out of the public's view from spreading like wildfire, so you have an instance now where the white house press office probably would want to do some thing like that in a traditional administration, do some thing like that in a traditionaladministration, but do some thing like that in a traditional administration, but this administration does not necessarily operate the way most past administration have.|j operate the way most past administration have. i amjust want to read a tweet that has come from eric trump, the son of the president. eric trump just tweeting out, he is a real lawyer, he will fight this with the same conviction he fights for america every day. i ask you to pray for his recovery — — every day. i ask you to pray for his recovery —— he is a real lawyer. that tweet coming from eric trump about his father, talking about him being as a warrior and as somebody who is having to fight through this. what, if any, who is having to fight through this. what, ifany, impact who is having to fight through this. what, if any, impact does all of this, we are in the middle of an
11:10 pm
intense political season, it isjust one month until the election. i have already seen news that the biden campaign is going to put on any negative attack ads about the president, only positive ads. negative attack ads about the president, only positive adsm negative attack ads about the president, only positive ads. it is a delicate situation forjoe biden and a democrat because they don't wa nt and a democrat because they don't want to engage in an extended i told you so kind of scenario, because you have to remember to hundred thousand americans have died of covid—19 since this hit the us earlier this year. they all have family and loved ones and friends who may not appreciate hearing donald trump's tricks talk about how he did not prepare himself for, protect himself or exposure to the virus, so it is a delicate situation. joe bidenjust tweeted this cannot be a partisan moment, it must be an american moment, it must be an american moment, we have to come together as a nation for stubs setting the tone,
11:11 pm
i think, for a a nation for stubs setting the tone, ithink, for a party. a nation for stubs setting the tone, ithink, fora party. for a nation for stubs setting the tone, ithink, for a party. for donald trump's campaign, this disruption is whole campaign. he had this fear is space of its swing state rallies, virginia, minnesota, wisconsin, florida, north carolina. he had hit these states repeatedly. he cannot do anything of that now in this key moment in the campaign when he is trying to change the dynamic and erase the deficit in poles thatjoe biden currently has a. anthony zurcher there, joining us, our north america reporter. anthony, thank you very much forjoining us. if you're joining us, this is special ricky news coverage from the bbc of the president's diagnosis of being positive with covid—i9 and the news we got from the white house within the past hour that he will be transferred to a hospital. the white house is saying this is out of an abundance of caution. he will be
11:12 pm
there for a few days, where he could be monitored. we have been told by the white house that his fatigues, that he has mild symptoms of the coronavirus, would none the less they've made the decision this evening, 6:15pm here in washington, to move to the walter reed hospital. that is all we have for the moment from washington, samantha. back to you, but clearly this news moving very fast out of the united states this evening. absolutelu. katty, we will back with you. it's well known that the older you are and the heavier you are, the higher the risk of having serious complicatons, with covid—i9. our medical editor fergus walsh looks at the risk to president trump's health. donald trump has several factors which raise his risk profile for coronavirus — his age, weight, and being a man. at 7a, he's often insisted how healthy he is, despite a love of burgers and hot dogs.
11:13 pm
age is the biggest risk factorfor covid—i9. in the united states, eight out of ten deaths have been among the over—65s. the risk of dying for somebody aged 65 to 7a is 90 times higher than for someone in their 20s. to put that in context, a recent international study found that once infected with coronavirus, the chances of dying were around one in 100 at age 65, one in 25 at 75, and one in seven at 85. the president and first lady of the united states... the first lady, melania trump, is just 50, 2a years younger than donald trump, and physically fit, so her risk from covid should be low. the president is six foot three and weighs more than 17 stone, putting him in the obese category — another red flag. his medical team will be
11:14 pm
on constant guard for any change in his condition. 0ften patients have quite mild symptoms to start with and then it's as if they drop off a cliff and suddenly it gets worse, and that can happen really within hours. i don't think they can be sure for approximately ten days. if then he really hasn't developed any worse symptoms, he seems to be controlling the virus in his throat and his nose, then i think they will relax. i have a temperature... it was nine days after testing positive for coronavirus before boris johnson was admitted to hospital in early april. he spent three nights in intensive care and says the nhs saved his life. another leader who got covid was president bolsonaro of brazil. he had few symptoms and dismissed the virus as a measly cold. it's impossible to predict how any individual will cope with covid. many people never develop any symptoms at all.
11:15 pm
and there are treatments now which have helped improve survival rates for what can be a brutal disease. fergus walsh, bbc news. it's understood the president is receiving experimental antibody treatment. let's speak to arthur caplan, director of medical ethics at new york university grossman school of medicine. welcome to you. thanks very much for being with us. before we talk about this treatment, i want to ask you about your thoughts about the president being moved to the walter reed medical centre, because we understand that there is a very well—equipped medical unit within the white house itself, fully staffed with a team of doctors. why do you think that his medical team would have taken that decision to move them to a hospital at this stage? i think my guess is it is because his symptoms are worsening and he is in such a high risk group, as you just reported, that they want to be safe, so even other is a medical unit at the white house, it
11:16 pm
is not a hospital and if you started to show more lethargy, more fever, if they are also looking at it in a 74—year—old man, ithink if they are also looking at it in a 74—year—old man, i think that is what is going on. they are concerned. and as you said, they're giving him experience antibodies which also they would not do if they we re which also they would not do if they were not pretty worried. tell us more. it is a single dose of regeneron, we understand he had a. this is a non-approved medicine, if you will. you take immune building cells that you manufacture, this is not the same as getting the transfusion from someone who has had the disease. it is artificially manufacturing those same chemicals. hopefully you build up same chemicals. hopefully you build up the resistance in the person and they are better able to fight off they are better able to fight off the virus. but experimental, unproven, in clinical trials,
11:17 pm
the virus. but experimental, unproven, in clinicaltrials, looks promising but not yet approved by our fda. who have taken the decision to go ahead with an experimental, non—approved drug on the president of the united states? his doctors, and his doctors would've had to make and his doctors would've had to make a request to the company, regeneron, for compassionate use. they would have to decide that, yes, the president cannot be put in a clinical trial, he has got the infection, he seems to be slipping. we are going to move quickly and allow that to happen. it is his doctors making the request to. and what are they weighing up here, the potential benefits of a drug which has not been approved with what possible side effects? there is some information on this intervention, these antibodies do seem to help if you use them early, so they are thinking about that, but there can a lwa ys thinking about that, but there can always be damage to the kidneys if you have unknown consequences of any
11:18 pm
spare mental medicine, they have to wait that. what they are thinking is symptoms starting to show probably worse, high—risk person age wise, size wise, let's trade the experiments on medicine, and that indicates real concern to me. we understand that the president also has been given a cocktail of other drugs, including vitamin d, zinc. what do you understand about what else he is receiving? things like vitamins, there is not much evidence that make any difference to the course of covid in anybody. it can't hurt, they are known to be safe and i don't think they are particular helpful. there are some steroid drugs known to be helpless your lungs begin to fail, and i'm sure those are lined up. the president of the united states is not you or me. they are going to be able to get any or every agent they think might help and do so in ways that ordinary citizens might not be up to access.
11:19 pm
and he is in a high risk group because of his age and weight, isn't he? that tips the equation in trying things you might be as aggressive with for a 30—year—old or, for that matter, with his wife at 50. ok, professor arthur caplan, thank you very much for your thoughts, your analysis there. keeping an eye on the helicopter there on the white house lawn, marine one, been there foran hour house lawn, marine one, been there for an hour now when we received news residential was going to move to the walter reed hospital, military hospital, outside washington, dc. 0ur reporteranthony zurcher is watching what is happening there. it looks like the helicopter could be leaving momentarily. we will not see the president boarded initially because that angle of the shot is being filmed on tape and it will take slightly longerfor it filmed on tape and it will take slightly longer for it to be uploaded, but this is a very key moment because this is the american public's first chance to see donald
11:20 pm
trump in person since he announced that he has covid—i9. he appeared via video yesterday to an event in new york, he was at a fundraiser yesterday evening in newjersey. the principal watched him get off the helicopter, enter the white house last night, once he returned to washington, dc —— the principal watched him. but as you know, a lot has happened since then. our north america editorjon sopel also standing by. the helicopter taking off right now. you can hear the sound of the rotor blades coming up, and the helicopter will soon, i am just looking up skywards, i am on the north lawn and the helicopter is on the south lawn, so and we have empty building between us, so it is ha rd empty building between us, so it is hard to see precisely but i can hear the helicopter now as it is passing overhead —— and we have the empty building.
11:21 pm
it is the engines turning, at the moment we cannot see it, but this is the moment two days ago no one at the moment two days ago no one at the white house could have foreseen, in any circumstances, that marine one would have been taking president trump to the walter reed medical ce ntre trump to the walter reed medical centre in northern washington, in maryland, to bethesda, and the helicopter has now departed. donald trump has left the white house, he is on his way to hospital out of an abundance of cautions, the white house is a saying, but an awful lot of unanswered questions as to why the situation has changed so dramatically, so quickly from mild symptoms to the need to hospital for the next few days. that is what we understand is going to happen once he arrives. he will be put in a private suite, of course, as you would expect and he will be kept there for a few days but we don't know very much about what is going to happen once he arrives, do we?
11:22 pm
there are going to be presumably adequate test undertaking and presumably test they cannot perform in the white house, where there is a fully equipped medical unit and there is another medical unit in the building across from where i am standing. they have office decided it needs the full panoply of a quick and you having a major hospital —— they have obviously decided. that is why, presumably, he has gone here. there are a lot a lot of questions i do not know the answer to and it would be aaron's speculation as to what condition he is in —— errant speculation. we are just about to receive pictures of president trump walking out of the white house, unassisted, wearing a mask as he boards the helicopter. i think we have not gotten quite yet. the optics of this are crucial for a president who at all times wants to appear strong and in control. yeah.
11:23 pm
i've just got some details from the pool team, the president exited the white house from the diplomatic entrance at about a couple of minutes ago, just the other side there. he gave a thumbs up and a short wave, did not stop to talk, was wearing a navy suit and a blue tie, he was wearing a mask, and he walked normally on his own, without any outward sight of trouble, with mark meadows and a few other people the pool reporters did not reckon eyes and, as we heard, marine one took off a few moments ago. let's go took off a few moments ago. let's go to our correspondent barbara plett usher. a very shortjourney, barbara. he will probably be there in the next seven or eight minutes. yes, something like that, about a ten or 15 minute flight from the white house to get here. it's a fly he
11:24 pm
could have made quite quickly if there was an emergency but, clearly, there was an emergency but, clearly, the white house doesn't to do that and as jon was the white house doesn't to do that and asjon was staying there, he did walk to the helicopter, showing he is not ill enough to be carried at least and he is old enough to walk. that's what the white house has been saying, not seriously ill, he has some symptoms and theyjust want to bring him here because they want to ta ke bring him here because they want to take as much caution as possible. he is an affordable category, he is the president of the united states, he is an elderly man, and they say he will continue working here. there is an executive suite number he can work. this is a hospital that is known as the president's hospital. 0thers known as the president's hospital. others have stayed here, so they are equipped for that, and thatis so they are equipped for that, and that is what the white house has said will happen here. they have very pointedly said he has not handed over his powers to the vice president for one of the president who stayed here, ronald reagan, when he had a surgery, did write that letter in the hospital to
11:25 pm
temporarily transfer his powers to the vice president while he went under the knife. that is something president trump is not done, the white house making very clear he is still in control, and that he will be undergoing tests here over the next couple of days. it has been reported that this decision might have been taken quite quickly because mr pentz, the vice president was on a call that the president would convalesce at the white house and, on the advice of medical experts, they have brought him here to be as possible —— mr pence. brought him here to be as possible -- mr pence. as you said, the hospital has received hospitals in the past, but they will have to scribble pretty quick with only about an hour's warning. do we know what kind of preparation they have to put in place to prepare for him? they have not delivered any details of that nature, but as i said, they do have an executive switch
11:26 pm
—— suite which has been used before a presidents, so at least they will have rooms for him. since mr trump was walking, and seems that he may not need emergency medical attention, there may be some time to set things up if they are going to be doing tests as the white house has said and we are beginning to get a sense of the helicopter arriving shortly. if they are prepared to do the tests, they need to get those organised over the next day or two of the one would have thought, while he settles. that is how the white house has billed this visit, and so the hospital is reasonably preparing for something like that. 0k, barbara, for now. we will be back with you shortly as soon as the president plans there. let's go to my colleague katty kay. i can
11:27 pm
imagine there is wall—to—wall coverage of this in the united states, this similac moment with about a month to go into the election there. yeah. samantha, we're the bbc and we are covering this pulse will as well, so it is just american networks interested in what is happening to the president. everybody around the world is going to be interested, notjust because there is an election coming up but because he is the president of the united states, the biggest economy in the biggest military in the world, and his health is a matter of international importance. it's also a matter of national importance and there are growing calls here for some kind of press statement or press c0 nfe re nce some kind of press statement or press conference from the white house. you can see the live pictures of marine one, now getting towards... it is a nine minute flight towards... it is a nine minute flight so i reckon they must beating towards walter reed medical facilities in bethesda, marilyn. it looks like coming into land at
11:28 pm
walter reed. —— bethesda, maryland. there used to taking dignitaries. presidents, army veterans there, so they are getting settling. let's go straight to barbara plett usher. i imagine you can hear the helicopter landing. i can see the helicopter landing. i can see the helicopter landing. it has, excuse me, just landed right over there, you might be able to see the rotors moving, so he hasjust arrived, and you can see that people are watching and taking video across the road, a group of people videoing as he came down, interest here in seeing the president fly to the hospital, again, at this short notice after this information he has been diagnosed with covid. he will be entering the hospital shortly. i do not know if you will be walking. he
11:29 pm
walked to the helicopter from the white house, but here, we don't know what the procedure will be. what we do know is that in executive suite has been prepared for him. we saw him walk onto marine one on the south lawn of the white house, a walk of about 50 yards. he looked totally fine, he walked by himself, unaided and that he waved a couple of times, he gave a thumbs up sign a couple of times. because the president has tested positive and is infected with the coronavirus, he was wearing a mask and the people who were company him, including medical personnel, ready distance. it was interesting, they entered the back of the helicopter, he entered the front of the helicopter. you do not see the president wearing a mask, but this around, he did. that walk from the door of the white house to the door of marine one was
11:30 pm
an incredibly important walk for this president to take at this moment, by himself, unaided, looking strong, looking healthy, frankly, because if we had seen the president being wheeled out in a wheelchair or carried out in a stretcher, it would have caused a huge amount of panic around the country. jon sopel and anthony zurcher mentioned the news broke after financial markets had shut. a lot of chaos in financial markets as well. and a lot of concern about the president's health, but i think 2—seam walking by himself, unaided, was very important for the president, for the white house, indeed for the country itself. anthony zurcher also watching this video with me. what did you make of him walking on to marine one and now landing at walter reed? i have seen the donald trump and other president walk onto donald trump is travel nonstop over the
11:31 pm
la st trump is travel nonstop over the last few weeks, boarding to fly to andrews air force base and
