6:30 pm
a pattern of life can continue. nicholas witchell, bbc news. time for a look at the weather here's nick miller. after a very wet start to the month, the middle of the month bringing something relatively dry. pleasant when the sun makes its way through the cloud, but even though high pressure is close by it's not dry everywhere. the flow of air from the north—east has brought plenty of showers across the eastern side of england and some are pushing further west, so you may catch one into the midlands and may be later parts of wales, western england and overnight into northern ireland. that said it is the western side of the uk where the clear spells are prolonged overnight and this is where we will find the lowest temperatures. in these spots a chance of a touch of frost going into tomorrow. a big change in the weather on the way
6:31 pm
tomorrow with quite a bit of cloud, occasionally some sunny spells coming through. a light shower possible just about anywhere. especially through the eastern side of england. from all of this cloud in scotland some patchy light rain is possible. a breeze is coming in from a cool direction so these temperatures are below average for the time of year. we will continue with this relatively quiet weather into the weekend. this is saturday, still a lot of cloud around and the chance of a light shower although many places will stay dry. then by sunday, again we are changing the day but not really changing the weather. sunshine hard to find, a lot of cloud around, some spots of light rain. if anything sunday looks a little bit cooler. it is into next week when the weather changes are on the way again, when low pressure is coming back. that means the wind will pick up into next week. it may turn technically milder for a time
6:32 pm
but i'm not sure we will notice that as the wind picks up, and more rain comes oui’ as the wind picks up, and more rain comes our way. october has more rain in it. thank you very much. a reminder of our top story... a furious political row has erupted as greater manchester leaders say plans to move the city to the highest covid level are not fair. the health secretary matt hancock urged them to put party politics aside. that's all from the bbc news at six so it's goodbye from me and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'mjohn watson. as the efl meet to discuss a financial bailout — calls grow for an independent regulator in football. we hear from adam peaty — on a different kind of exhaustion.
6:33 pm
adam peaty on fighting fatigue as he returns to international competition for the first time as a father. we hearfrom teenage french open champion iga swaitek on how life is non—stop when you are a grand slam winner. back i have not had time to unpack from the whole trip you like it is really crazy here in poland. also, coming up in the programme. who is your unsung sporting hero? snowboarder aimee fuller shares hers — and asks that we celebrate the volunteers who keep sport going through difficult times. hello and welcome. the 72 efl clubs met today to discuss a 50 million pound bailout which could secure the futures of clubs in leagues one and two.
6:34 pm
it comes as calls grow for an independent regulator in football to better manage the financial disparity that exists between premier clubs and those further down the pyramid. our football reporter simon stone joins us tonight. simon, we understand meetings between the efl clubs began early this morning and have continued throughout the day. any indication if the offer from the premier league will be accepted? well, we are still awaiting a statement from the football league to outline their position but my understanding is that they will not be accepting the £50 million for leaguei be accepting the £50 million for league i and the two as it is presented. basically because there is nothing in there for the championship and they do not want to
6:35 pm
be seen as splitting efl and there was unanimity were equally until there was options on the table on how to respond to the premier league which is the initial concern. so, the wording of the statement, when it eventually comes out, will be very interesting because it will be very interesting because it will be very difficult given rick perry has spent a long time basically saying that we need £250 million than saying, well, you offered us this, we do not want to come and take it away. the devil be in the details in terms of what they say, but my understanding is that they will not accept understanding is that they will not a cce pt £50 understanding is that they will not accept £50 millionjust understanding is that they will not accept £50 million just for league i in league 2 sides. is there any sense because it is not enough money. we heard from rick perry saying that they need 250 million.
6:36 pm
this offer is only 50 million. is it even enough? there is a feeling that the 50 million basically fills the gap in revenue that league i in million basically fills the gap in revenue that leaguei in league million basically fills the gap in revenue that league i in league 2 clu bs a re revenue that league i in league 2 clubs are experiencing due to no fence in the stadiums and the inability to sell merchandise. the issueis inability to sell merchandise. the issue is that they have a fundamental issue financing clubs when you consider three from the premier league going to the championship to relegation and three for the championship going to the premier league because of promotion. so they have a fundamental issue with that and they also have an issue with some championship clubs probably within the next 2a hours will receive money from the premier league in terms of transport fees, so there are issues between the premier league and the efl for how
6:37 pm
to fund the championship and as the efl is resolute in the fact that the whole league, all three divisions need to be sorted out financially, not just need to be sorted out financially, notjust or segments of it. not for the first time there are calls for an independent regulator in football. david bernstein the former fa chairman is leading it this time. and indication if that will gain widespread support? an independent regulator, a lot of people think it should have been because there's so many issues with the game regulatory that a lack of diversity in the structure of the game, who was going to give up their power to allow that independence to come on board. david brinson has a
6:38 pm
lot of figures, and he burned them in the former england manchester united player, said this is not going to be easy. will be taking and screaming into this and yes, history has repeated itself time and time again, football is not taking up the opportunities that it is had to fundamentally move forward and risking the consequences. missing them front of us. everyone agrees something has to be done but people are different but it has to be. things are seeing potentially, either unworkable or destructive for the game. my think isjustjust try to keep this thing together, keep the base strong as possible because thatis the base strong as possible because that is the glory of the english game. what is the potential
6:39 pm
timeframe here, as far as any real decisions, what can we expect to come in the coming days. there's the regulatory aspect and then there is the project, the picture that we have described, i think that may be it. a long time in the negotiations and discussions, immediately is £50 million and £250 million in terms league i, lead to in the championship, it needs sorting out because there are some dire warnings that consequences for the clubs, u nless that consequences for the clubs, unless they get some kind of finance that will allow them to upgrade, it needs the premier league and the fl to get together to get together and come up with a plan to both of them find satisfaction and we are not there at the moment. many thanks for
6:40 pm
that. staying with football, the internatioanl break is over. there is though unease over the wisdom of staging international fixtures during a rise in cornavirus infections. cristiano ronaldo the most high profile player to test positive whilst away with portugal, his not the only national team to eb affected. joe lynskey is with me tonight. joe we'll be looking at how swimming is attempting to make things work a little later. but it does raise the question. was it sensible to push on with these international matches? we will get to look at but when we when we look back on this international break it's probably pictures like this we'll remember it for rather than the match action. this was cristiano ronaldo the day before he tested positive for coronavirus with his portugal team mates — the caption read united on and off the field, butjust two days later, ronaldo was watching the team's next match on his own in isolation.
6:41 pm
like most european nations, portugal played three games this week, two in the nations league and one friendly — there were limited crowds in for all of these games in lisbon and in paris. ronaldo would miss that 3—0 win over sweden because of that positive test — both him and kylian mbappe have now picked up the virus on international duty — mbappe tested positive in september. of course when players go away with their countries they leave the strict bubble environments in place at premier league clubs — the irish team in particular have had problems this week which could now see callum robinson and john egan miss games for their clubs, while arsenal are trying to clear kieran tierney to play, despite him having a few more days left to run in isolation.
6:42 pm
no other portugal players in their squad tested positive this week. now remember it only took a handful of positive cases back in march for english football to shut down completely, but now even international friendlies are going ahead when the virus is in team camps. so what justification is there for games like this? we asked the general secretary at fifpro, who represent the players. you can never justify you can neverjustify any kind of risk to the health of players. and we are now in a situation where we would probably need more centralised decision—making than we have seen so farand decision—making than we have seen so far and how decision—making than we have seen so farand how and decision—making than we have seen so far and how and why would circumstances these games can go ahead. we all know that the federations organising these games
6:43 pm
have very substantial commercial contracts. they are aligned with these games that's one of the triggers weighed these games are being played. obviously, all parts of the games have arisen on the trunk, a legitimacy of why they should continue but in this period of time, they health priority needs to remain number one and if compared this to the situation out from where we we re this to the situation out from where we were at the pandemic, the economic pressures are increasing at it some consideration, maybe that health is not the predominant factor is was a few months ago. waiting to see if any this is all particularly delicate for rugby league and rugby union where the season's reaching its climax in the next fortnight. two salford players will miss their challenge cup final with leeds at wembley. that's desperately disappointing for dan sarginson and jack ormondroyd
6:44 pm
who'll both be in isolation for that match. it's the first time salford have played in the final in half a century. there haven't been any virus cases ahead of rugby union's saturday showpiece though — exeter and racing will contest the champions cup final in bristol, despite nine positive tests at racing two weeks ago. wasps are also trying to keep an outbreak under control — four of their players have the virus a week before they play exeter in the premiership final. and john with other problems like those at cycling's giro this is a challenging time for team sport across europe and the us, where nfl games are also being moved round because of positive cases. elsewhere today. two st mirren players returned positive tests and another member of the first team squad is self—isolating — all three will miss
6:45 pm
saturday's premiership tie with motherwell. ecuador‘s jhonatan narvaez of team ineos grenadiers won a soggy stage 12 of the giro d'italia. he braved heavy rain to take victory. joao almeida retains the overall lead. and it looks like conor mcgregor is coming out of retirement again. the former two—weight ufc champion has agreed a date to fight american dustin poirier next year. the 32—year—old announced his third retirement in four years back injune. it's just the beginning for 19 year old tennis sensation iga swiantek. fresh from winning a maiden grand slam at the french open. her rise has been sudden and something of a surpirse. but as the youngest winner at roland garros since monica seles in 1992 it's no wonder she's being spoken about as a multiple grand slam champion.
