but many of you did. she's here to give them the results. you are the first sort of non—patient cohorts to show that cold water swimming raises this protective protein. which is pretty cool. professor mallucci is now trying to find a drug that stimulates the production of the protein in humans and to see if it really does help delay dementia. if you slowed the progress of dementia by even a couple of years, in a whole population, that would have an enormous impact, economically and health—wise. these cold proteins are a very promising line of research. but she warns it is still early days. sadly, there are no guarantees that this will lead to a successful dementia treatment. justin rowlatt, bbc news, london.

1:37 pm
rooney was visited by a friend who had been instructed to be tested for covid—19 and was later found to have coronavirus. a derby county spokesperson said the club was relieved rooney had tested negative but that they were disappointed that the "selfish and careless act of one individual put both wayne and his family at risk, as well as having a detrimental impact on derby county." rooney tweeted that he was angry and disappointed to be missing the next three matches for the club. cycling's vuelta a espana starts tomorrow and it will be chris froome‘s last race with his curent team ineos grenadiers. froome is aiming to win the vuelta for a third time. it'll be his first major ride since he suffered an horrific crash in a practice ride in france last year. i don't actually remember the

1:39 pm
all nonessential retail will close and pubs, bars and restaurants will be restricted to takeaway service only — and households cannot mix in any location. there'll be extra support for businesses too — up to £5,000 for every business forced to close. the first minister mark drakeford said the objective was to ‘break the chain of infection‘. we are all tired of coronavirus and the many rules and regulations with which we have to live our lives. we all want to see and into this pandemic and our lives returned to us once pandemic and our lives returned to us once again. unfortunately, we do not yet have a vaccine which will allow that to happen. and a firebreak period is our best chance of regaining control of the virus and avoiding a much longer and much more damaging national lockdown. the window we have in which to act is only a small one, and to be successful we need everybody‘s help.
1:40 pm
here in wales, this is the moment to come together. to play our part in a common endeavour. t0 come together. to play our part in a common endeavour. to do everything we can, together, to protect the nhs and to save lives. if we do this, oui’ and to save lives. if we do this, our health service will be able to ca re our health service will be able to care for people with coronavirus and everybody else. those people need emergency treatment, those people who need treatment for cancer, there is such people he needs suffering from strokes or heart disease. that will be possible provided we take this opportunity and, most importantly of all, it will save peoples lives. of course, this will not be easy. but if we act together we can succeed. scotland's first minister has said

that people "overwhelmingly" stuck to covid—19 restrictions over the weekend. nicola sturgeon thanked those in scotland who heeded rules on gathering in each other‘s homes on saturday and sunday. during her press briefing earlier the first minister said she will publish new plans for tackling the virus this week. we will publish this week details of our new strategic approach to tackling the virus. i hope to discuss the outlines of this tomorrow with other members of the scottish parliament and then we will publish a strategic framework by the end of this week before debating it in parliament next week. one of the things the framework will set out are the different tiers or levels of intervention and restrictions which may be applied future, either locally or nationally depending on how the virus is spreading. we will also indicate based on the latest advice from the national incident management team and our

clinical advisor what level should apply to different parts of the country or potentially all of the country once the current temporary restrictions potentially come to an end on the 26th of october. effectiveness of existing measures to curb covid, for example how we will work to improve compliance with facts, advice and all the other guidance, review of our testing strategy and how we will continue to support testing protect and also how we will provide support for businesses and individuals so that they can comply with all they have been asked to do either now or in the future. publication of the framework is an important step as we look ahead to the winter and prepared to manage the virus over what may well be — and i would expect to be — a very challenging period. we hope that the framework can command broad support both in parliament and across society. this is where i will end. it is worth stressing that although the

strategic framework will update our approach to tackling the virus, many of the basic elements of that approach will not change. in particular, it will continue to be vital that to slow the spread of the virus, all of us, as individuals, stick to these individual rules and guidelines on high hygiene, physical distance on, guidelines on hygiene, physical distancing, and limiting contact with other households. the headlines on bbc news... wales is to go into lockdown — announcing a "short, sharp" shock to act as a ‘firebreak‘ on covid—19. talks resume over the introduction of tougher covid measures in manchester — as the city's mayor demands more financial support. a tightening of restrictions across europe — many countries reintroducing rules

eased after earlier lockdowns. across the uk millions of families would normally be enjoying a half term break, or planning a trip, at around this time. our business correspondent nina warhurst has been to a holiday park in cumbria to find out how the new restrictions are affecting bookings. this is castlerigg campsite in cumbria. just feast your eyes on this view, would you? imagine opening your eyes to that! this is derwentwater, one of 16 bodies of water in the lake district. i learned this morning only one of them is officially a lake. and this is one of the places, like so many across the country, that has benefited from us not being able to go to as many foreign destinations for october half term, so bookings were up significantly but then came the tier system and then came the cancellations. let me just remind you what you can and can't do according to the guidelines depending on where you live. so, first of all, if you are in tier 1, so with the medium alert system, you can travel to other tier1 places and you can stay overnight with other households from tier1 places as long as there are six
1:45 pm
people or fewer. if you are in the higher risk area, so tier 2, travel to other 2 tier places is allowed but you have to stay with your household or your bubble if you're planning to overnight. but for tier 3, so the very high—risk areas, at the moment the liverpool city region and lancashire, you're being asked not to travel away from your area or to enter into those areas unless you live there, and not to stay overnight anywhere else unless it's through work. as for the other nations, we are waiting to see what happens with wales. at the moment they are trying to make sure that people from tier 2 and three don't visit wales. northern ireland, of course, has entered its circuit breakers are no holidays there for now. and in scotland, we are waiting to find out what they tier system will be. little wonder, with all those complexities, but fewer than half of families are now planning an october half term break. and bisit britain has said that confidence has really plummeted.
1:46 pm
——and visit britain has said that confidence has really plummeted. about one in three self catering accommodation places has reported an increase in calculations. an increase in cancellations. on average, that is costing each business £15,000. let's talk to david who runs the site, it's been in his family for three generations so obviously means a great deal to him. good morning. morning. thanks for having us. when you look at how things were in the run—up to october half term and the subsequent changes to the tier system, what a roller—coaster. it certainly is. trying to navigate over different rules and regulations that are changing has been, yeah, a challenge for ourselves and our staff. and what's been the biggest question when customers have been calling you ahead of half term? certainly wanting some guidance, wanting to know what, in terms, if they have to cancel, would they be able to transfer, would they be able to have a refund. obviously if they are from a tier 3 area, we'd happily either refund them, transfer to other date, and just urging them to follow their own guidelines and restrictions.
1:47 pm
it's quite a big responsibility foryou, though, david, isn't it? you're having to almost enforce, police those rules, at the same time make sure people have a nice time on their holidays. it's really difficult. yeah, there is quite a lot of grey areas. somebody may be on holiday already that is in the lockdown tier but with at irving caravan or motorhome you may have spent but with a touring caravan or motorhome you may have spent you may have spent a week in the north of the county of at hadrian's wall so you're not coming from your address, on from from a week earlier so very difficult, a lot of grey areas. and poses lots of questions for thousands of businesses. thank you, david. jill, you are talking to places throughout cumbria, you work for the tourist board around here. good morning. overall, how do you think the year will look when we compare it to previous years,
1:48 pm
because yeah, staycations have been up, but then we getting these knocks, aren't we, time after time? he used the word roller—coaster early and that's exactly what the year's been and so far we estimate that the value of the visit of economy here in cumbria where it's so important to communities, we've lost more than half of that already this year. looking at a business like david's, he's not been able to operate anywhere near his full capacity so even though he's been open and if you like he's been busy, he's been busy against reduced capacity. and were looking at wales, waiting for their announcement, northern ireland have already called it. would a circuit breaker for england be preferable for you and for the businesses you talk to? we're a hospitality sector and ourjob is to welcome people and people like david have worked incredibly hard to provide covid—safe and wonderful experiences in glorious open spaces so what we want to do was to be able to continue to do that. it's not for us to make that decision. if that decision were to come, we would be, obviously, adhering to that, but what we would also need to do is make sure that the amount of government support for businesses like david is there because at the minute that's not what the support is for.
1:49 pm
ok, and also they want more guidance, don't they, and what they should be saying to customers? if you have booked a holiday and it's looking like you might have to cancel because your tier has changed talk as quickly as you can do to the person that you've booked with. it could be... i think this car is coming here. it could be that you're entitled to a free refund if they have to cancel but also you might get a credit note for later in the year or next year for example but there is no, no simple solution to this at the moment i'm afraid. nina warhurst in the lake district. most of us have an image or an interpretation of what it means to be homeless. and it's probably not this...
1:50 pm
well that was nikita crump, who has over a million followers on tiktok and makes videos— which show why she became homeless in november 2019 and decided to move into her car. some of her films have been viewed tens of millions of times and although nikita is helping to draw attention to the issue of hidden homelessness, she says that the freedom of living in her car has become a lifestyle choice now too. earlier she spoke to victoria derbyshire, from her car in california. i was living paycheque to paycheque and sometimes not even be able to afford to eat,
1:51 pm
so i was skipping meals to save money and using my credit card to stay afloat, which is not sustainable, so after months of contemplating, i finally moved into my car. and tell us about your routine that you started to film and you put on tiktok and also on youtube? so, it's honestly quite as simple as it seems. i have these window coverings that i made from insulation that i keep up at night. first thing in the morning, i fold my blanket and pillow back up and organise, take these guys down and, before covid when gyms were shut down, i would head to my gym to shower and go to work. and in terms of your following now of your videos, what do you think of the reaction? i never expected what has come of me filming my lifestyle. it's been insane and
1:52 pm
overwhelming and i receive so many kind, unexpected messages from people who say that i have inspired them in some way, or that i make them feel more normal because they also live in their car, and that can feel strange and lonely at times. it's been wild. absolutely. you said that obviously some places were shut where you would go for a shower during covid. i think complete strangers also offer to help, didn't they? they did. i am very fortunate that i had several people reach out to me over the span of covid quarantine. sometimes that meant that i was commuting a few hours to travel to these places where they were located, but i was able to access their resources and use their showers throughout covid, so i'm
1:53 pm
really grateful for that. yeah. how comfortable, if that is the right word, are you about being homeless now? today, i'm much more comfortable with it. i do still, it sounds funny to even say, but i do still feel secretive about it because it's all over the internet, but in local life i am very discreet about it. that is a recent development. i have become comfortable with it in the last several months. prior to that, i was really hiding it. yes. why were you hiding it? it feels strange. i don't think people accept it and i think people think it's weird, so i wasn't telling anyone for a while. is it a positive choice now for you to live in your car? today, yes. i wouldn't necessarily have said it was negative before, but as i have grown more comfortable with it.
1:54 pm
i would say now it has developed to be positive, i'm a happier person. that is good to hear. what is the most difficult part about living in a car? the aimlessness that i can feel sometimes. it mostly happens when i am leaving work, i will start to drive away and realise that i don't know where i'm heading, i don't have a destination that i go to or a home to return to every day, so i can feel kind of lost and alienated. right. and the most positive thing about living in your car? just everything that the financial stability which has brought me, which is being able to do what i love, which is travelling, without having to put it on a credit card or anything like that. that brings me a lot ofjoy. yeah. do you think people have no idea how many individuals in reality live in their
1:55 pm
own cars around the world? i do. obviously, those people are pretty hidden, unless you are peering into every car you pass around you don't know if somebody is sleeping in there, and i have had so many people, again, reach out to me, telling me that they also live in their car, so they are definitely out there. yeah. what do you want people to take from your tiktok videos and youtube? honestly, i began sharing those things to show people other options, whether it be because they're also in financial hardship and these devices and the lifestyle would help them, or simply to travel because i have seen so many people want to travel so badly, but feel that they couldn't afford it because they had to get a hotel or something like that, so if they were up for something like this, this is a way to do it. now it's time for a look at the weather with stav. hello there. last week we saw a lot of dry weather around thanks
1:56 pm
to high pressure. it was pleasant enough to get out and about and enjoy the autumn colours. low pressure really dominating the scene, as you can see the start here, lots of isobars, lots of weather fronts too, mainly affecting the north and west of the uk that's going to bring some very wet weather for the rest of the day andindeed wet weather for the rest of the day and indeed to tonight into northern ireland and into scotland, particularly western scotland. dry but fairly cloudy further south and east through the dave and it will be a blustery day. these are the mean wind speeds, stronger than that across the irish coasts where we could see winds touching gale false. further north at stays wet, wind tending to move away from northern ireland but it stays wet for scotland, then another one starting
1:57 pm
to spread across wales and england. bit of clearance coming in again behind it by the end of the night, perhaps just one or two showers. again, and blustery night fall, but of mild one, particularly england and wales with double—figure varietal use, chilly in the final. begin to clear around lunchtime, brighter with some sunshine, one is to showers, cluster moving across the irish gate was northern ireland, into northern scotland, one or two of these could be heavy and perhaps even thundery at times. mild stated composite will be blustery and windy. we head on into wednesday with this next area of low pressure moving from biscay. we are uncertain to us to the northern and west was extent of it but it does look like it is going to bring a spell of 50 whether heavy rain across parts of england and wales especially in the south and we could see some strong winds across the south—east so you will just have winds across the south—east so you willjust have to say, stay tuned to the weather forecast for this. for the weather forecast for this. for the north we have still got a box of

rainfor the north we have still got a box of rain for northern scotland but in between sunshine and showers. again, and other fairly mild between sunshine and showers. again, and otherfairly mild day between sunshine and showers. again, and other fairly mild day across the north with temperatures reaching 17 to 18 in the south—east. transient ridge of high pressure. new area of low pressure will move into northern and western areas on friday.
