of years on a whole population, that would have an enormous impact, economically and health wise. the link between cold water and dementia is a very promising line of research, but don't expect results soon. there is, the scientists say, lots more work to be done before it yields a potential treatment. justin rowlatt, bbc news, london. time for a look at the weather here's stav da naos. . thanks, very much. it was chilly last week but we had some dry weather. there as been a bit of dry weather. there as been a bit of dry weather round today for england and wales, hazy sunshine but it wasn't dry everywhere. scotland and northern ireland has been wet, we have the risk of local flooding in plails. this week remains unsettled because we have an active jet stream, wetter windier, but what you will notice is it will be milder as we head on into tuesday and wednesday. the pressure charts indicate lots of weather fronts to the front. the wind will be picking

last year. tha nkfully thankfully i don't actually remember the crash itself. it doesn't hunt me at all. i've got a bit of a break there. also coming up in the programme: her dreams coming true — we catch up with jockey hollie doyle following her record—breaking performance at ascot. hello and welcome to sportsday. hello there and welcome to sportsday. we start with what could be heartbreak for wasps. their place in rugby union's premiership final hangs in the balance today. it comes as three more players tested positive for coronavirus, meaning they might have to forfeit their place in the big match at twickenham against newly—crowned european champions exeter this weekend. 0ur rugby union correspondent

chrisjones has more on this. chris, nice to see you. these latest results show there was a bit of a spread of coronavirus in the squad. what are the chances they will get the all clear to play this weekend? it isa the all clear to play this weekend? it is a very good question. we are me to find out more in around about 48 hours or so, gavin. there is another round of testing tomorrow, with results from that round coming in on wednesday, and it's only on wednesday when we will get a firm decision from both wasps and the authorities, the rfu. they will make authorities, the rfu. they will make a call. four tested positive last week, three this week. —— three test positive from staff members. it is not the level as from sale search. we have to wait and see, but certainly bristol have been put on red alert, and their chance of a place in wasps in the
6:36 pm
final are now a lot greater than they were a couple of days ago. and just finally, chris, what is the fallout? there was a fair bit of controversy about the fact that bristol, well beaten by wasps in the semifinal, would be the ones to come into wasps place if wasps cannot fill the fixture, but permission broadly say that it was the next case, that in this case bristol was tapped to fill the void that could fulfil the fixture. we wait and see. bristol a few days ago celebrated winning the european challenge cup. they were awaiting a holiday. now they're in training, they have put their ears down and there is a very chance they are going be thrown into action at the weekend, but as i said earlier, more news expected on wednesday.
6:37 pm
we shall see. chris, that you very much indeed now. —— thank you very much indeed. time to reflect on a busy and somewhat controversial weekend in the premier league now. we were treated to one of the most explosive merseyside derbies in years. everton twice came from behind to secure a draw with champions liverpool. but a huge blow for the champions, as well as a late goal for them being disallowed, the loss of their crucial defender virgil van dijk. it's after he collided with everton goalkeeperjordan pickford. austin halewood is in the studio for us with more on the news that will no doubt leave liverpool fans unhappy. absolutely, gavin. yeah, it's been the incident that's dominated sporting conversations all weekend, hasn't it? after that incident betweenjordan pickford and virgil van dijk. but we learnt this afternoon that jordan pickford won't receive any retrospective action for that challenge on van dijk — a challenge that we now know will keep him out for at least six months. now, the fa decided not to take any action because they say the incident was seen at the time by the referee, michael oliver, and the var.
6:38 pm
so that's only going to add to the frustrations of liverpool fans, who were disappointed enough at the time because there wasn't even a foul given against pickford. now, that was because van dijk was offside in the build—up to the challenge. well, the former premier league referee mark halsey told me earlier that the blame has to lie with var team. you've got the referee, which i can understand not seeing the incident, because i've been in the same situation, where i have not seen an incident because of players blocking my view. but you would expect one of the team to pick that incident up. and it's no doubt in my men it is a clear red card offence. the per merely have come state var —— the premier league have commenta say the var saw the offside, nothing else.
6:39 pm
a clear red card, according to mark halsey there. but if liverpool fans are looking for at least a small bit of comfort, van dijk posted a statement on social media saying he "believes that everything happens for a reason" and that he'll "return better, fitter and stronger than every before. " "i'll be back" is how he signed it off, gav. i'm sure he will be and i'm sure liverpool fans will be monitoring his progress as he gets better from that injury. so to make matters worse, jordan henderson had a late goal ruled out. the technology again proving a problem for liverpool. yeah, it really rubbed salt into the wound for the team and, of course, for liverpool fans. they were denied that late winner, that would've taken them top of the league, by var. and it was all because a tiny fraction of sadio mane's body was ahead of the offside line. and the former chelsea midfielder cesc fabregas
6:40 pm
wasn't impressed on twitter — he said "the game's gone mad!" — and former england midfielder jermainejenas called both of the decisions shocking. he said... well, like many football fans around the country, referee mark halsey is of the view that some common sense should be used in a situation like that. we are in the entertainment business, and we do not want to see goals rule out of that calibre. you cannot tell in the replay he is offside, in the first replay, it is a goal. because we all know if a player is half a yard offside, the var picked it up straightaway. when you're looking at incident like this, three, four, five, six times, for me, it's not offside, a goal should be given, and i still find it ha rd should be given, and i still find it hard to believe that is given as offside tub because i still do not
6:41 pm
know which part of the body was offside. mark halsey‘s certainly not the only one with that view as well. var once again dominating the weekend's football, gav. i'm surea i'm sure a talking point for the weeks to come. austin, thank you very much indeed. let's see if we're in for any more drama this evening, with two more premier league games happening. we're into the second half of west brom and burnley — burnley the only side without a point so far this season. it is still goalless at the hawthorns there. later on, leeds can build on their impressive start to the season when they take on wolves. they could go third with a win. not winning either the euros, the world cup or both would be a failure. that's according to england's director of women's football, baroness sue campbell. she was speaking at the unveiling of the fa's plan for the next four years. campbell said that there were high expectations of the incoming england manager sarina wiegman, who's currently in charge of the netherlands. 0ur ambition is doing

the world cup and ideally the euros. we think it isa and ideally the euros. we think it is a fantastic opportunity for steps you will only have been in the job for a year at that point, but if you look back, people realise she was with the netherlands less than a year when she won the euros previously, so i am confident that she will give us any opportunity to win. let's quickly round up some of the day's other stories. derby captain wayne rooney has tested negative for covid but says he's angry that he has to self—isolate and miss three games. he was visited by a friend who had been instructed to be tested for covid—i9 and later tested positive. derby say they are disappointed with the "selfish and careless act of one individual." for the third consecutive tournament, kyle edmund has been knocked out in the first round. the british number two lost to yoshihito nishioka 6-4, 6-0 in the atp indoor event in cologne. and olympic champion adam peaty helped london roar to a stunning

217—point victory in their season opening international swimming league match in budapest. peaty won the 100m breaststroke to secure maximum points for london, while world champion team—mate duncan scott took the 200m freestyle title. cycling's vuelta a espana starts tomorrow. it's chris froome's last race with current team ineos grenadiers. he's won this event twice before, when ineos were called team sky, although he says he'll be supporting team—mate richard carapaz this year. he told sally nugent he's looking forward to a first major race since suffering an horrific crash in a practice ride in france last year. it was pretty horrific. i've never been through anything like that in my career. i had a double broken leg, broken elbow, broken sternum, broken ribs, perforated lung, fractured vertebra, fractured neck.

it was nasty. and it took me a long time to get going again. and even once i got going, it's taken a lot of time to build up to this level of fitness why am able to be on the start line to attempt racing a grantor. it's been a long road back to physical fitness. how grantor. it's been a long road back to physicalfitness. how much do grantor. it's been a long road back to physical fitness. how much do you have to steel your mind to forget about what happened and get back on the bike? thankfully i don't actually are member the crash itself, so that does not hold me at all. i have got a bit of a blank there. mentally, i have been waiting for this moment, just to be back on the start line of a grantor for ages. it's been a long road back and i'm certainly really looking forward to just i'm certainly really looking forward tojust being in i'm certainly really looking forward to just being in the i'm certainly really looking forward tojust being in the race again. i'm certainly really looking forward tojust being in the race againm seems a couple disappointing races. how confident are you in the team that has got you where you are now? we do have

a good line appear, richard, a great position. it has been a difficult year for the team, so been a difficult year for the team, so it would be great if we could and ona high so it would be great if we could and on a high note here. and for me personally as well, this is my last race with team ineos, so i am looking at ending my 11 years with the team hopefully on a high note. how challenging has the last six months been for everybody in the sport, with the restrictions around coronavirus? cycling is one of those dynamics ports, you're notjust in the stadium, you cannotjust lock it down, you are out on the open roads and quite difficult to control crowds and contacts with people, so we have definitely try to implement some bubble systems as best we can and the tour de france made it, so that gives us hope that hopefully
