with to go along with decisions when they seem to be totally chaotic. how much longer are they going to keep us apart from our family and friends? human nature i think we'll go against the rules. just to try and get it under control, we need to kind of work together, with the government and do what they say. finally, a quick show of hands. if you are broadly optimistic about the next few months, raise your hand now. just two of our ten were upbeat. if you are broadly pessimistic about the next few months, raise your hand now. the other eight generally gloomy. pessimism has it, i'm afraid. thank you all very much indeed and good luck. that report was from our home editor mark easton. time for a look at the weather here's stav daneos. thank you and good evening. a lovely day across much of the country today, especially england and wales. lots of sunshine, breezy but very mild indeed. we have had some

glorious sunset pictures brought in by our weather watchers. the reason for the mild and breezy weather is low pressure has been sitting to the west of the uk, across ireland and bringing this warm southerly breeze but we are keeping an eye out for the next low pressure system which will arrive across england and wales over night. this area of low pressure towards the west brought some wet weather to northern ireland that much of scotland through the course of the day. a few showers in wales and west in england. overnight, the low pressure becomes confined to the north of scotland. windy and wet here. further south, a lot of cloud, some showers and then we see this heavy and persistent rain arriving in the south by the end of the night. very mild here, 10-14. 9-10 end of the night. very mild here, 10—14. 9—10 across scotland, a bit cooler in the northern isles. a different day for much of england and wales tomorrow, much cloudier and wales tomorrow, much cloudier and wetter. the rain could be heavy and wetter. the rain could be heavy and persistent for a time and could lead to disruption. could see a swathe of strong winds in the extreme south—east during the early

afternoon. quite a breezy day for all and even windy across the north and west of scotland, gusts of 40—50 miles an hour. it will remain quite damp. a bit of sunshine in southern scotla nd damp. a bit of sunshine in southern scotland and northern england. temperatures still milder for the time of year, 14—17 across the south—east. an area of low pressure moves away quickly during the course of thursday and allows a ridge of high pressure to build in, so an improving picture for thursday. a bit of dry weather into the afternoon, some sunshine. low pressure starts to put into the west as we head into friday in the winds pick again. thank you. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me and on bbc one, we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are. hello, i'm john watson. on sportsday tonight. as the champions league

returns talks emerge of a new european superleague featuring the premier league's biggest clubs. is formula one at risk of sportswashing, with saudi arabia set to stage a race next season. and back in the saddle. why froome's final race with ineos grenadiers could be an unhappy one. good evening. the creation of a new european premier league, featuring european football's biggest clubs has taken place. the 4.6 billion pound league would include liverpool and manchester united, they are two of five english teams who have been approached by those behind the tournament, with several other of europe's elite also involved. it would replace the champions league currently run by uefa, european football's governing body,

with fifa, said to be involved and backing the proposal. the bbc‘s football reporter simon stone explained what else we know of the proposal. this is, the alternative to the champions league. clearly the driver of the wafer, their major club, this isa of the wafer, their major club, this is a fifa alternative and could be a major money spinner. but the issue is, where do you get the games to fit in? because the champions league you're talking about, six group games and another match night, over 15 because the round of 16 is played forfour 15 because the round of 16 is played for four weeks not two with the fifa

competition, we are talking about 30—something match nights and there isa 30—something match nights and there is a lot of things to be done in terms of the calendar, which is another issue for uefa because they are not in charge of that. though, i think this is a part of the power battle between fifa and uefa, but clearly because these talks are taking place, there is a lot of reason why europe's major clubs want to listen to what the finance are trying to say in what fifa are wanting to say because clearly, they can use that as leverage when it comes to dealing with uefa and also the premier league in discussions about the way that would bubble up from 2020 and onward. he could have far—reaching implications the biggest sites, not for the first time we have heard discussions about a potential breakaway come along as talk about that. where the chance of this proposal getting off the

ground? it is interesting because someone was very close to the european football scene was speaking to them and they reckon 50—50. the information the bbc has basically says it might be a bit further away from that, but clearly, these negotiations are real and there is an implied threat there and i think that you u efa uefa need to take this seriously because most of the leaks, they have match nights to protect as well in the be interesting to see if negotiations with fifa take the conversation into a sphere where we may be looking at a reduction in the premier league, which is clearly what was mentioned in project big picture as well. very interesting story with a lot of negotiation still to take place. we will be interesting to see at the end of

it, the way the european football is structured because i think it will be much change from the way it is at the moment. the group stages get under way tonight, manchester united meet later, john will be watching them more on that match to come. i have to ask about these plans for a new european premier league. but the make of it all. i did not think it is in make of it all. i did not think it isina make of it all. i did not think it is in a coincidence that this is surfaced, just a few weeks after a few weeks of few weeks big picture, that there might be the sort of change to the champions we can european football for the ball now. i know there is i'io no smoke without fire, so it looks like the champions league as we know it now, at some point will change, but it might be that what we're seeing at the moment like the big picture, is a bit of
6:38 pm
something that is put out there to see what the reaction is and if it does come to it, it won't be quite we see now but it, it won't be quite we see now but it does look as though changes on the way. how important the game is this? for manchester united, i think every game is important. maybe a little unfortunate and that the four english clubs in the champions league on paper, this is the most difficult group and it starts for united and on paper is the most difficult group. reaching the final la st difficult group. reaching the final last season. so, injuries obviously affecting manchester united, but also affecting paris st. germain. but for manchester united, it kind of patches together defences that we see tonight and clearly, that is a big challenge. chelsea's defensive frailities remain a serious concern heading

into their opening match with sevilla tonight. frank lampard admitting as much. he sadi they need to conceed fewer goals. alistair bruce ball is watching this one at stamford bridge tonight good evening. chelsea have let in nine goals in five league games despite huge investment in the transfer window. chose his toughest opponents in this group. europa league winners last season and they dealt with them in the quarterfinals in manchester united in the into the land, they are very canny european team and i think chelsea fans, you can see the potential in this team going forward and a lot of money has been spent the summer. yes, some in defence. that is not quite clicked and there has been a problem there as well. we're waiting to see whether it will be fit to start tonight and

the likes of them, chelsea are going to score a lot of goals, but you're right, it's about keeping them out of goals, but you're right, it's about keeping them out at the other end. a display of attacking talent. russian side krasnodar, rennes, the other sides in the group. it's a favourable draw isnt it. i would favour chelsea to get out of the group in battle it out for the top spot. the problem chelsea had, there is a tougher group than this, there is a tougher group than this, the lost their opening home game and put them under quite a bit of pressure. they did brilliantly to get out of the group but they ended up get out of the group but they ended up in the spot which lasted against munich. at the shows you how crucial it is to determine the group. so, i would fancy them to the top two spots and, you know, let's wait and see all plays out tonight. many thanks indeed you can hear more on bbc radio tonight. no crowds will see either united or chelsea in those opening matches in the champions league.

but fans will be allowed in to watch group games elsewhere in europe — rennes one of those for example. with news on thatjoe lynskey is with me tonight. and joe you've also got news on a return to the biggest stage for hungarian side ferencvaros. and it's a tough introduction for them too. yeah and john we start with a look at an intriguing group g — one which will eventually see barcelona's lionel messi and juventus' cristiano ronaldo face each other later in the tournament. but alongside those two european giants in this group is a famous club of yesteryear. tonight ferencvaros of hungary make their comeback in champions league with a trip to an empty camp nou to play barcelona. now, they haven't played in the group stage of this competition for 25 years, but ferencvaros used to be one of the continent's dominant clubs — they beatjuventus in the fairs cup

final of 1965, but as hungarian football declined, so eventually did this club and they were relegated from the top flight in 2006 for financial issues. they've now worked their way back and made it to the group stage through four rounds of qualifying. and they'll play their home games to come against barca and juve in the brand new national stadium in budapest. but ferencvaros' heritage goes back to hungary's football heyday, when the national team regularly beat england in the 50s and 605. but for this country and this club, it's been a long road back. they were an amazing team back in the 60s and 70s. they won the inter—cindy ferris club to the

the uefa cup and playing in groups, major supporters and about hungry, they supported the fans. and not just a moment for the club, but for the country almost compared a little bit too when hungry qualified in 2016, which is after, not quite that level but it doesn't feel that far off. and up to 22,000 of those supporters could be allowed into the puskas arena for those group games — that's 30% of the capacity which is the uefa limit. but there are separate restrictions on crowds in place across europe. no fans will be watching english teams this week — that's because spain and the uk currently doesn't allow spectators in for elite sport.

in france, paris is under curfew restriction, but in rennes to the west they can let fans in — 5,000 will watch them play krasnodar tonight. in germany, 1,000 fans can watch leipzig, but bayern munich tomorrow will be behind closed doors. in russia and the ukraine, just like hungary, they willjust abide by uefa's 30% stadium cap. and at lazio in italy a thousand fans should see jude bellingham make his champions league debut. this is the teenager who moved from birmingham city to the bundesliga this summer — his dad mark posted on twitter, marking a big night for his son with a video of one of his youth team goals just two years ago. it will be an unusual champions league debut for him, but this is a season for the competition like never

before either. a quick look at the day's other stories. injury‘s forced the manchester united forward alessia russo out of england's squad for next week's friendly against germany. she's been replaced by team mate katie zelem. you can see that game — on the 27th — live on the bbc. england have been chosen as top seeds for the women's 2021 rugby world cup, along with canada and hosts new zealand. wales have been seeded third alongside south africa and the top—ranked european qualifier. british number one dan evans ended a five match losing run with victory in the opening round of the european open. he beat italian qualifier salvatore caruso in three sets in antwerp. cameron norrie is also into round two. and sport england have made sixteen and half million pounds available to help people struggling to stay active during the pandemic as part of their ‘return to play‘ fund for grassroots
