information that both russia and iran had obtained voter information and on iran, they have evidence that iran was sending spoofed e—mails trying to intimidate voters and undermine confidence in the election and damage president donald trump. i'm russia, they said they did not have evidence that russia was doing exactly the same thing, but they were aware that russia has obtained some voter information as they did in 2016. they were very keen and to underscore that they told them to brief the american people and that they we re american people and that they were working hard to making sure that they uncover such further activities and that americans can trust the electoral process. they have said that over and over again that this is a secret process and americans can trust at. what do you make of the timing of this? is certainly
1:03 am
interesting. i would not want to speculate that it's less than two weeks before the election and there is a lot of misinformation being thrown around and perhaps that is what they want to address. but, yes, it is difficult to make any sort of speculations of the stage. and we do not need to speculate it because we have known for a while despite repeated attempts to interfere in us elections, notjust us elections, but democratic processes in the uk with foreign actors getting involved in spreading misinformation online. that is something we have known about for a while, did you get the impression of something different happening 01’ something different happening or is in more of the same? they would not take any questions. it is very short press conference about seven minutes long. they also mentioned that iran had distributed videos in which they were warning the iran actors were warning about
1:04 am
the risks of people voting incorrectly. they said that was not true that it was not possible to vote incorrectly in that way. but they were very specific in what they found about having sent out these fa ke about having sent out these fake e—mails and this video saying that russia, they had not found in the activities of that kind. but they were aware that kind. but they were aware that voter information had been collected by russia. thank you. stand by because ijust want to bring our viewers a bit of what you are talking about there. the us director saying that both countries have also obtained voter registration information. would like to inform the public that two foreign actors, iran and russia have taken specific actions to influence public opinion relating to our elections. first, we have
1:05 am
confirmed that some voter registration information has been obtained by iran and separately by russia. this data can be used by foreign actors to attempt to communicate false information to registered vote rs information to registered voters that they hope will cause confusion, so chaos and undermine your confidence in american democracy. interesting, so, trying to undermine confidence in the election and stating again and again, it is a trustworthy pi’ocess , again, it is a trustworthy process, but also to remember, it is not just process, but also to remember, it is notjust voting on election day here, millions of us voters have already voted. absolutely, 35 million americans have voted already. but the fbi was keen to underscore that they are on this. you've got this you can trust the process. and on the

spoofed e—mail, we do not have any of them, but what kind of things were they talking about two people sending spoofed e—mails are these foreign actors, iran, sending e—mails, saying that they're trying to do what? we do not know. with this in the press conference was that there spoofed e—mails and they are designed to intimidate voters, confidence, damage president trump and video distributed by iran so people could cast false ballots from abroad. the media here will be as we speak, trying to find out exactly what they meant. but they were very specific, very measured and kept it within quite specific para meters kept it within quite specific parameters and did not take any questions at all. thank you very much. we have a different story to talk about in a moment. we will be back in

washington because meanwhile, former us president barack obama has sharply criticised his successor donald trump in his successor donald trump in his first campaign speech and the democratic parties presidential candidate and his former vice presidentjoe biden. speaking at a rally in philadelphia, broke a promise the donald trump is not shown interest in anyone but himself and he also criticised the president handling of the economy and the pandemic. and the rest of us have had to live with the consequences of improving incapable of taking thejob improving incapable of taking the job seriously. at least 220,000 americans have died. millions ofjobs are gone. our programme reputation around the world is in tatters. as you can see, she is here again. that speech from barack obama is an intervention, 13 days away from voting day and what else did he have to say? well, as you can
1:08 am
imagine, some of the blistering attacks he made on donald trump, there was more of the same in his speech but i think the key thing that he had to say is do not trust the pole. do not take for granted that we have got this in the back. there was a fox news poll that had joe biden five points ahead in an african pole with different paws from the countries and that hasjoe biden 4.9 points ahead in pennsylvania and interesting that barack pennsylvania and interesting that ba rack obama pennsylvania and interesting that barack obama said did not ta ke that barack obama said did not take that for granted, we saw what happened last time, get out and vote. he started his rally by telling people that if they were voting by mail, to make sure that they followed the instructions clearly. and to acknowledge that, look, he understands that some people may think what is the point of me voting. the government lets me voting. the government lets me down and he said actually,

they are shooting at us. they are shooting. what happened here on tuesday night has deeply unsettled nigerians. this is not the first time the army has been accused of shooting innocent protesters, but the fact it happened here in what was one of the most peaceful protest sites in end sars has ignited an already volatile situation. what started off as a protest against police brutality has widened to calls for a change in the status quo and inequality. we, the poor, we are suffering. we're congregating in the square. we are doing our protests. nobody was even out. we obeyed the law. why would try send soldiers to harm us? if they can't put this nation in order, let them step aside. let's take over and put this in order. we need the betterment of this nation. they should fix our economy. they should be accountable to us. we do not want police brutalising the innocent

citizens of nigeria any more. this is a protest that was born on social media. more than half of the country is under 24. last night's events were broadcast online, and the #endsars hashtag has galvanised support. i will say nigerian government, you guys are a shame to the world. for killing your own citizens, sending the military on the street to kill unharmful protesters because they are protesting for their rights. it's uncalled for. nigeria's been a dictatorship for almost half of its life as an independent nation. many of its citizens worry tuesday's events echo the dark days of military rule, and they're determined to make sure that doesn't happen. mayenijones, bbc news, lagos. the british government has confirmed that the post brexit

next, the centers for disease control have published a study comparing patients hospitalized with the flu and with covid—19. the report found coronavirus is five times deadlier than influenza and is also more likely to lead to potentially life—threatening complications. the racial and minority ethnic groups are disproportionate and being affected by coronavirus. let's talk to the doctor who was the director of the texas children's hospital centre vaccine development and he is here in houston. what do you make of these findings? the importance is that this virus is so much more than a respiratory pathogen similar to influence. when first that first virus emerged in 2003 from southern china, is primarily a respiratory infection and early am of the
1:14 am
virus came to the us, we thought this was going to be compared to the first sars virus influence, and there are some similarities, but it is so much more. this virus clearly attacks the vascular system, the heart and causes complications in the coronary arteries like heart attacks, strokes, causing neurological complications, causing pulmonary emboli going to the lungs and the bottom line is, the death rate of hospitalized patients about five times higher. some of the study looks at around four or 5000 patients with influenza and over a two—year period, the overall mortality of hospital patients was about 4%. it was over 20% with covid—19. so, it is not the flu. there is a lot of misinformation from the white house trying to be the case this is nothing more than the flu. it is far worse than that. on that exact point, it was not
1:15 am
obviously not just the on that exact point, it was not obviously notjust the us leaders, leaders in brazil and other areas have tried to claim that it other areas have tried to claim thatitis other areas have tried to claim that it is just like the flu. does this research now in that completely? i certainly hope so. completely? i certainly hope so. it should not have required the study to prevent but this greatly adds to it. another piece to it which is so upsetting is how minority are so much more susceptible to this, particularly individuals with other studies and disease control of the summer in the narrative coming out of covid—19 is that it only gets older individuals think exclusively, younger, middle—aged individuals are rather immune to severe complications, that is not the case. we now know that 30 to 35% of the deaths of hispanics
1:16 am
and african—american minorities, if they die from covid—19, 30 to minorities, if they die from covid-19, 30 to 35% minorities, if they die from covid—19, 30 to 35% of those deaths are under the age of 65 and so this virus is robbing a generation of mothers and fathers and teenagers and brothers and sisters in yet another catastrophe and a lot of this is so hidden and not readily accessible so i think these kinds of studies are importantjust these kinds of studies are important just to really strike at home. thank you very much for talking to us. thank you. still to come on bbc news. our politicians are turning to popular online games in the twitch platform to get out to vote. a historical moment that many of his victims have waited forfor many of his victims have waited for for decades. many of his victims have waited forfor decades. the many of his victims have waited for for decades. the former dictator older, slimmer, sat down obedient enough. dawn and

1:19 am
indicated and attributed the attack is truly a concerning piece of news. and how much of an impact, if any at all that this can actually have on the election? the important thing to remember here is not that they have this data, this data can be used for multiple purposes. it can be used to potentially e—mail voters directly. it can be used to refine and enhance social media campaigns. it is truly a worrisome development because having that data allows them to do multiple things with attacks or manipulating peoples minds and peoples desires and peoples intentions to vote. give some concrete ways that this can happen. talking about spoofed e—mails and what would that mean? we already saw some samples of spoofed e—mails, today which are targeting voters and indicating that there may be personal attacks against them, this may affect

their work, indications that there may be black male and —— black this is truly. and my with these foreign countries want to interfere? this is a new case in that we have very seen interference and national elections across the globe and considering that the environment and the situation in the united states right now, clearly nation state and interference will be the name of the game and any sort of election, wherever it may be. this is not new in the sense that we have seen this attempted interference, is the state or research that reveals how influential any of this
1:21 am
kind of interference is cyber in other countries elections? one of the big challenges we face in these types of situations is attribution. it is normally very difficult to pinpoint the origin of the attack or pinpoint from where it was launched from and therefore generally speaking, therefore generally speaking, the research and community is very cautious around stating clearly that the attack came from country abc. so the fact that the fbi has made a very definitive in concrete statement today is a big significant piece of news. we must leave it there but as i said, this is a developing story and we get more details will come back. thank you very much for your expertise. thank you. pope francis has made his strongest statement yet in favour of civil partnerships for same—sex couples. the pope was speaking in a new

game the screen around her is the game itself and twitch as a platform that lets people watch other people play computer games essentially, which may sound a bit strange, but it is hugely popular. one of things that spring to mind is that just does not take long and it shows how fast things move when four years ago, we remember barack obama, four years ago, we remember ba rack obama, before four years ago, we remember barack obama, before that, this huge campaign on facebook and things like that. those platforms already seemingly giving way to new ones like twitch. definitely a you mention barack obama and you mention barack obama and you mention the previous election 2016 with the breaking news about iran and russia perhaps interfering with the election of the us, you see that there isa of the us, you see that there is a lot of distrust about traditional social media when i say traditional, i am referring to facebook and twitter. twitch isa to facebook and twitter. twitch is a new route, these for the time being to reach these

voters without having any interference and especially for those who are disaffected and isolated who are younger might not turn out, who might have given up on the selection. i'm afraid we've only got 20 seconds left, but briefly, part of the problem to try to appeal to younger people is that traditionally that order people voting younger people do not. yes, that is definitely an issue in the us but as barack obama showed, reaching out to the sugar voters and being able to speak in to their interests and concerns is a very powerful thing. absolutely fascinating stuff, thank you for coming on through. thank you. that is just about it from me. we will have plenty more on the breaking news from the fbi there in the news conference that there has been attempted interference in the 2020 presidential election. stay tuned for that and you can get me online. on twitter. this is
