elections. first, we have confirmed that some voter registration information has been obtained by iran and separately by russia. this data can be used by foreign actors to attempt to communicate force information to registered voters that they hope will cause confusion, so chaos, and undermine your confidence and american democracy. undermine your confidence john bateman is a former a nalyst of john bateman is a former analyst of policy and now a fellow at the carnegie endowment for international peace and spoke to me about this move from iran. this is a concerning new milestone for iran. iran has to some extent politically interfered in the united states before but this is by far the most blatant and aggressive attempt to directly influence the course of us elections. but there is likely to layers of intent. there is a sense in which a run may be trying to undermine faith in the us

democratic process and then they may also be seeking to sway the outcome of the election possibly seeking to embarrass donald trump by associating him further with this far—right group that iran was disguising itself as. there was disguising itself as. there was confusion here because there are different ways you can look at it. sending spoof e—mails to try to intimidate people to vote for donald trump is iran trying to get people to vote for donald trump? which clearly iran does not really like donald trump so it is not doing it for that reason, it is doing it for that reason, it is doing it for that reason, it is doing it to what? so general confusion? as you say, it is somewhat perplexing but i think what we can rely on here is that the intelligence community has announced its assessment that iran does favour a change of power in the united states due to donald trump's maximum pressure campaign on around so
3:04 am
i would say that better interpretation here is most likely an effort to embarrass trump while undermining us faith in its democratic process , faith in its democratic process, which is quite ambitious for orion and not something they have sought to do the past. i asked the same question earlier. there is not masses of research on what kind of impact this kind of stuff has but what is your gut instinct about how influential this is when it is all said and done? i agree that assessing impact is notoriously difficult. and a small e—mail campaign like this, i don't think we'll swing the selection. probably more influential will be the way that americans talk about this type of activity. do they feel threatened by foreign influence and does that further reduce the fate that many americans have in and does that further reduce the fate that many democratic discourse today? democratic have in

what you make of this fbi announcement, then? it is very interesting and it seems that this was an act of opportunism bya group this was an act of opportunism by a group or groups in iran and designed to sow mistrust and designed to sow mistrust and lack of confidence in the democratic process. there is very little to suggest that the system, the electoral system here was in any way compromised by this. it is purely an attempt to infiltrate the proud boys, this right—wing extremist group's web domains and basically seek to send out threatening messages to those who are democratic voters, registered democratic voters. a lot of this photo registration is freely available here on electoral rolls and so on. it is thought to have come from
3:06 am
electoral rolls going back to 2018 and has been targeting people in swing states including florida, pennsylvania and arizona. as to the damage done, well, very difficult to say whether any damage has actually been done by this apart from seeking to intimidate some voters. this theme is not new, of course. we were talking about potential and alleged interference in the last election, too. absolutely and people here are very much aware and on guard for any suggestion that they could be some sort of attempted interfering in the outcome of the election here given what happened four years ago when it is thought that russia played a key role amongst others in attempting to infiltrate and affect the outcome of the election here so everybody is
3:07 am
on guard but officials were at pains to point out that the system has not been compromise and remains safe and resilient as far as this kind of attack is concerned. they added they we re is concerned. they added they were prepared for the possibility of actions by those hostile to democracy but were ultimately confident that they would combat any such attempts. ifind would combat any such attempts. i find that really interesting. that reinforcing of confidence in the electoral process. you are diving we have been talking about this of these attempts sometimes by donald trump himself to delegitimise the results of this election if they don't go his way. that is right. and donald trump is taking a particularly postal ballots which he believes is a system that is rife with potential fraud even though there is little evidence to

suggest that is indeed the case. there are those who are saying that this is part of that attempt to undermine confidence in the system here with less than two weeks to go before voting day. thank you for that, david. meanwhile, we are going to stay in the us because former president barack obama has sharply criticised his successof sharply criticised his successor in his first campaign speech in support of the democratic party boss mike democratic party boss mike democratic candidate and his former vice presidentjoe biden, of course. speaking at a rally in philadelphia mr obama said mrtrump is rally in philadelphia mr obama said mr trump is not shown interest in anyone but himself and criticised the president's handling of the economy and pandemic. and the rest of us have had to live with the consequences of him proving himself incapable of taking the job seriously. at least 220,000 americans have died. millions ofjobs are

to interfere in the 2020 presidential election. barack obama has sharply criticised his successor donald trump in the former president's first campaign speech supporting joe biden. let's get more in our top story. a cybersecurity expert the general manager in new york and he talked us through what the fbi has said. this is truly a developing story. it is big news. the fbi has stated that there has now clearly been meddling in the us election with information stolen with regards us voters. this is not necessarily something new in the sense that there have been problems in the past but the fact that the fbi has come out so clearly and indicated and attributed the attack is truly a concerning piece of news. how much of an impact ifany piece of news. how much of an impact if any at all do think this can actually have an

election? well, i mean, the important thing to remember here is that now that they have the state this data could be used for multiple purposes. it could be used to potentially e—mail voters directly or refine and enhance media campaigns. it is truly a worrisome development because having that data allows them to do multiple things in terms of the attacks or manipulating peoples minds and peoples desires and peoples intention to vote. give us some concrete ways this can happen. they talked about spoof e—mails. what would that mean? we saw some sample e—mails that came out today which are targeting voters and indicating that there may be personal attacks against them, this may affect their work, there is indications that they may be blackmailed. so we need to see how this develops over the next couple of hours but the fact
3:18 am
that the attackers have personal e—mail addresses from voters is truly, truly a problem. why would these foreign countries like iran wants to interfere? well, this is a new development in the sense that we have already seen interference in national elections across the globe but considering that the heated environment and the tense situation that we are in in the united states right now clearly nation state attacks on nation interference is going to be the name of the game moving forward in any election, wherever it may be. he said that it wherever it may be. he said thatitis wherever it may be. he said that it is not new in the sense that it is not new in the sense that we have seen this pattern of attempted interference. is there any data research that reveals how influential any of these kinds of interferences in other countries' selections have actually been? not to the best of my

knowledge. in the big challenges we face is attribution. it is normally very difficult to pinpoint the origin of the attack or pinpoint from where it was launched from and therefore generally speaking the authorities and lots of the research community is very cautious around stating that it came from country a, b, c. the fa ct came from country a, b, c. the fact that the fbi has made a definitive and concrete statement today is a big insignificant piece of news. our thanks. two teenagers accused of pointing out the french teacher, samuel paty to his attacker, have been charged with complicity in his murder. samuel paty was beheaded last friday by an islamist teenager. lucy williamson sent this report. for france's secular martyr, an irish rock song. samuel paty‘s coffin was carried into the sorbonne
