after winning stage 3. the irishman battling up the final climb ahead of race leader primoz roglitch and the inoes grenadiers richard carapaz. britain's cameron norrie was beaten by world number 19 milos raonic in the second round of the european open in antwerp. a second set tie—break handed raonic the win. brandon lowe hit two home runs as the tampa bay rays beat the los angeles dodgers 6—4 to win game two of baseball's world series. it's now 1—all going into game three which is in the early hours of saturday morning. now, it's been a chaotic week for wasps as they build up to rugby union's premiership final against exeter on saturday. the wasps squad has been hit by a spate of positive covid tests, and, at one point this week, it was unclear whether they'd even be able to play for the title, with bristol bears set to take their place. wasps are free to play, but they have several players missing due to positive tests, four of whom would have been vital to their matchday squad. chrisjones is our rugby union correspondent and joins me now. chris, we've heard from wasps today.
6:46 pm
what have they made of the past few days? it has been a tough one to follow, hasn't it? what a whirlwind week and what a range of emotions these wasps players and staff and fans would have gone through family concern they would have felt last week and over the weekend when they had those series of positive tests to the relief, elation and ultimately excitement they would have had over the past 2a hours also. they have been one of the best teams in the country, especially since they restarted rugby. they reserved this shot against the exeter chiefs. he had coach, lee blackett, he spoke for the first time since this all unravelled earlier today. this is how it went for him in the early hours of wednesday morning when he found out that they had got the all clear. the staff were up at two o'clock. most of us never went back to sleep. you think you would get positive news and be able to go back to sleep, but the excitement, the

realisation of what has just happened. and then we came in yesterday and the main thing for us was, you see the emotion, the finals are a big thing formation anyway, and for us it was an emotional week. we needed to lower our emotions yesterday. everybody was excited to be back but we needed to control ourselves because we need to save that emotion for the weekend. ourselves because we need to save that emotion for the weekendm ourselves because we need to save that emotion for the weekend. it is going to be a tough task for them after everything they have been through this week. do they still have a chance of beating exeter, who would be on a high? they would be underdogs anyway, wasps, given that exeter are the best team in england and, as we find out last week, the best tea m and, as we find out last week, the best team in europe as well. 11 of their squad were unavailable, either through testing positive for being a close contact of someone who has tested positive. of those 11, four of them would have been involved in the 23. some key players will be missing when the sides are announced
6:48 pm
tomorrow, but lee blackett said they have still got 33 players to play from. because of the congested fixture list, a lot of young players have been getting experience and the wasps squad is arguably deeper and has had more quality, so in lee blackett is absolutely confident they can win in the game. they will give it a go and they can win in the game. they will give ita go and in they can win in the game. they will give it a go and in a wasps style, they will not die wondering. because of that elation and excitement they have felt, maybe a little liberation will go through the wasps squad on saturday. they start as underdogs but they won't leave anything out there. over the past couple of hours, a developing story about the england barbarians game on friday. it has been thrown into doubt, chris? the game is on sunday, with the teams being set to play tomorrow, with england naming their sides. but it is hard to see how that could go ahead because, as many, i understand, 12 of the barbarians players have been axed from the squad after breaching
6:49 pm
covid—19 protocols. they signed up toa covid—19 protocols. they signed up to a strict covid—19 code of conduct not to leave their hotels apart from training, basically, that as many as 12 of them went out to a restaurant last night. that meant they were at risk of infection, according to barbarians. we understand many were involved in the party and won't be playing, sunday. now they are desperately trying to find something new players who have to also be covid—19 three and have to have gone through the testing particles as well maybe players from the scotland 01’ well maybe players from the scotland or wales camp will get an sos. they are desperately trying to raise their squad to feel the fixture. just when wasps and exeter gets the go—ahead, this game looks like it is not going to happen. it doesn't rain, but it pours, doesn't it?
6:50 pm
england against barbarians on sunday, not on friday, thank you for putting me right. coronavirus is also impacting the super league — catalans were supposed to be playing hull fc tonight, but that match is off after five dragons players and two backroom staff tested positive. it's their third game to be postponed since the restart — and monday's game against warrington could be added to that list. the season will be decided on a win percentage rather than overall points due to postponments and it's something that dragons player sam tomkins knows could work against his team. we are desperate to play the 15 games, i think we have paid the least of everyone with 12 games so far. our percentage is good and we're far. our percentage is good and we' re pretty far. our percentage is good and we're pretty high up the table in terms of percentage, but with more this week, it means that we are now pushing it. we need to make sure we get those 15 games to qualify, even to be involved in the top four. i

think at the moment, it is frustrating for everyone at the moment with the uncertainty and how things have gone, it has been a very stop start season for us. but this time next year, we will have a much clearer idea of how things should be running, and hopefully that can mean we have a real successful tournament. are you worried, personally because the more testing, finding these positive cases, are you worried finding these positive cases, are ou worried ou're finding these positive cases, are you worried you're being exposed to the virus? i have actually tested positive for it this week. i am one of the dragons players that got a positive test on tuesday. it is a little bit worrying, but, you know, touch wood i am a young and healthy man, soi touch wood i am a young and healthy man, so i have been very lucky i have not had any symptoms so far, andi have not had any symptoms so far, and i am hoping to have another week of isolation and get myself back to playing as soon as possible. are you being advised to keep training if you have tested positive or is the advice to rest up, take it easy,
6:52 pm
don't put any strain on your lungs? the advice is just to have ten days isolation which means that you don't train, and after that there is a seven—day period return to play practical where each day you are monitored and your training increases over the seven days. as ha rd increases over the seven days. as hard as it will be, i will sit on the sofa and watch tv for ten days. good luck with his recovery. one other super league line for you, it will be held at hull's stadium on friday. it is the first time it won't be a manchester united's old trafford since 1998 due to their champions league commitments. tonight's action, castleford playing hull. castleford lead, 16—0 in the latest score with both teams in relegation trouble and in need of

throughout the evening. good evening, you're watching bbc news. as we've been hearing the chancellor rishi sunak has set out fresh support for workers in parts of england that are under tier 2 restrictions — that's the high alert level. he said thejob support scheme would pay out more than originally planned, where companies are not legally required to close. he said he would double the taxpayer subsidy for some employers. employers will now have to pay for a minimum of 20% of a worker's wages. that's down from 55%. this means the government will now fund 62% of pay for hours not worked.
6:55 pm
150,000 grants of up to £2,100 for hotels, restaurants, & b&bs will be given as part of a new scheme for businesses not obliged to close. they'll be paid monthly and be backdated. let's speak to the snp mp and economy spokesperson alison thewliss. shejoins me from her constituency in glasgow. good evening. you have put out a statement criticising the chancellor. what are you criticising him fora? chancellor. what are you criticising him for a? for a start, this is the third time he has come back to parliament in a month, which strikes me as being quite chaotic. people need to, they need to have a plan for the future, but the chancellor comes at the last minute with a package of support to amend the previous package of support that he brought forward. he would say that thatis brought forward. he would say that that is because the situation has changed, and that is what he said this afternoon, that the virus infection rates has gone up in an unexpected way. this is happen because the chancellor has failed to plan for this eventuality, and all
6:56 pm
of the opposition parties in the parliament, and indeed some on his own benches, have been calling for the self—employment support scheme and the furlough scheme to be extended to cover employees through the winter, and he has refused to do that and it will end at the end of this month leaving many people in many sectors high and dry. but he has a substantially increased the amount of money he is going to pay for workers, as you just heard. it still won't be enough for many workers. if you are a worker on the minimum wage getting two thirds of your wages and if you are not entitled for universal credit, for example, you are going to struggle to put food on the table, to pay your rent and your bills. the chancellor has announced this new scheme that will extend until next spring, so effectively the government will be paying for millions of workers wages. it will be paying the majority of their wages for the best part of a year. you don't see that as generous?”
6:57 pm
welcome all support that is coming from the government for workers, of course i do, because there are people in my constituency invite up and down the country who are dependent on this money at the moment. but the government has failed to listen, so for example there is still millions of people who have been excluded from the original support schemes who are still today not eligible for these new support schemes. the chancellor offered nothing for them. he didn't expend the £20 uplift to universal credit that had been brought in. that was welcome because it had helped to support people were working. also, legacy benefits, if you are on a disability benefit, for example, you're not going to be entitled to that additional uplift. and there are many sectors of the economy that will not go back to normal anytime soon. if you look at culture and the arts, parts of hospitality, aviation, they need a

specific plan from the government to see what support can be given.” specific plan from the government to see what support can be given. i am going tojump injust see what support can be given. i am going to jump in just for see what support can be given. i am going tojump injust for reasons of time. you are clearly calling for more support from the treasury. is it really sustainable for the treasury to keep borrowing and borrowing indefinitely? we are in a public health crisis here. the government is facing something, the likes of which we have never seen before. if they don't do this, they will push people into unemployment and the crisis will be much bigger and the crisis will be much bigger and the crisis will be much bigger and the scarring even greater. the difficulty in the scottish government is that we don't know exactly how much money is going to come in the measures that have been announced to english authorities, we can only guess what money is to come. the uk government must be absolutely clear exactly how much money is going to be coming, the scottish government needs to know this to plan for the future. thank you so much for that. timeframe look at the weather now. it was a drier

day today with some sunshine at times. we have got further spells of wet and windy weather to come over the next few days. we have got a band of rain arriving into the atlantic. head of it, we could escape up some rain into the south east of england. cloud increasing overnight, but ahead of that, temperatures down to three or 4 degrees. the rain that we start with won't last long at all. we will see patchy rain moving in across scotland. heavy rain across wales and parts of england tomorrow. that comes patchy as it pushes into eastern england in the afternoon. showers for western scotland and northern ireland. temperature tear 11 degrees. ahead of the rain in the south—east, temperatures 15 celsius. it could be warm on saturday, but it will be a windy weekend, particularly on saturday. another band of rain, followed again by sunshine and showers.
