just to i” w. tonight. thank you. just to bring you news coming through in the last few moments. it is very much about coronavirus. we're just hearing that the foreign secretary dominic rab is now self isolating. we are being told that dominic rab was told today that someone who he had been in recent close contact, . .. that someone who he had been in recent close contact,... had tested positive. he has taken immediate steps to self—isolate and he is going to work remotely during this time. the foreign secretary self isolating and working from home. that news just threw in the last few moments. more now on the us presidential election. joe biden, the democratic challenger, is edging ever closer to the white house. the bbc, in line with several
6:46 pm
other news organisations, is now projecting thatjoe biden is the winner in wisconsin. that means, joe biden is currently projected to have 253 electoral college votes, and donald trump, 214. the magic number is 270 to win the white house. let's go to washington now and to my colleague laura trevelyan. hi, laura. yes, 253 votes. that is how many joe hi, laura. yes, 253 votes. that is how manyjoe biden has in the electoral college. the great state as pennsylvania, known as the keystone state has 20 bouts in the electoral college, joe biden is narrowing the gap there. president trump is slightly ahead there. let us trump is slightly ahead there. let us go to philadelphia in

pennsylvania. michelle, we havejust heard from pennsylvania secretary of state that there could be a result later today. she had started to indicate that they were ahead of where they thought they would be la st where they thought they would be last night. remember, before election day, she said the goal was to try and get the majority of votes counted by friday. the fact that things are moving faster than the expected raised the question of whether or not that timeline would change and she has, as you pointed out, confirmed that. there was questions of whether some of the legal challenges taking place i'd also add to a calculation because a short while ago voting to my right stopped briefly as a result of a trump victory in one legal case involving observers and ballot counting. that case is ongoing and the philadelphia board of elections has appealed to in sylvania supreme court, one of the many legal challenges. for now, counting has
6:48 pm
resumed and we are hoping that we might find out which way the keystone state has gone. there are 20 electoral votes and we hope it will be this evening. michelle, president trump won pennsylvania in 2016 incredibly narrowly. it is part of the blue wall thatjoe biden is trying to reassemble. he has got michigan, he has got wisconsin, tell us michigan, he has got wisconsin, tell us about how many votes are still to be counted and where the two candidates started this moment and where the votes that are being counted are to be coming from. yes. as they currently stand at about 91% of estimated votes have been counted. what we saw is that trump's support in pennsylvania is largely in rural areas. there are 67 counties here. and the in—person votes which were counted faster, tended to favour president trump.
6:49 pm
there was this talk whether or not we might see somebody calling a red mirage, an early lead by trump but because the trump or postal votes which tend to favour democrats take longer to count, whether or not we would later see what they were calling a blue shift. that seems to be some of the trend. if you look at some of the results we have had in the last 24 hours, some of the suburbs around philadelphia were joe biden his support, chester county, montgomery county has been able to build on the support that hillary clinton had years ago. you are starting to see that blue shift. will it be enough because there are still over 100,000 postal votes to be counted in philadelphia? will these numbers add up to be enough to hand joe biden pennsylvania and, therefore, the key to the white house? 0r therefore, the key to the white house? or will it go to donald trump and certainly boost his chances of

winning another four years? we can see they're behind you, michelle, a lot of trump supporters waving flags. thank you. in the keystone state of pennsylvania. he ballot are being counted in nevada out west. republicans have filed a lawsuit against the state that allegedly the 10,000 foes have come from people no longer living there. president trump's campaign officials have held a news conference in las vegas in nevada and the director of intelligence as it is it is illegal to vote if somebody is not in the state of nevada for 30 days. ballots are not automatically legal votes until they are checked. we are not being allowed to check. the machine recklessly through ballots into the

male and now we cannot check. we cannot check whether they are non—residents, which we have evidence, publicly available evidence, publicly available evidence, that you all in the media that you should also be looking at. it is publicly available information nonresidents have voted, there is a 30 day residency requirement in the state of nevada. if you haven't been in the state for 30 days, it is illegal to vote. let us speak to brian lanza, he is the former communications director for the trump transition team. thank you for finding time for the bbc. with this flurry of lawsuits, is the president is laying the groundwork to challenge the legality of the whole election should he lose? thank you very much for having me. you cannot do that. our system is that each

individual state sets their own election policy. we would have had many opportunities to sort of raise conflict with that. what is happening in pennsylvania and in arizona and nevada, it raises serious questions. why are the rules changing? it is not a fair game we are playing and we are asking is a fair count of illegally casted votes. it does not seem like a high benchmark of what we are asking. but some are struggling with that. the president has tweeted to stop the count. would you not want every single vote that is cast illegally to be counted at this point?|j single vote that is cast illegally to be counted at this point? i think thatis to be counted at this point? i think that is the distinction. when he says stop the county says stop account where the rules have been changed to harm him. he wants every illegally casted bound to count. you have to be a resident in nevada as we saw earlier for 30 days and that
6:53 pm
has not been the case for some votes. they are pushing the brink of a banana republic there. you would like to send balance of dead people. there are concerns for our democracy and especially what is happening in nevada. it is a good thing for the president and director heilig is concerned. the fact is, you have joe biden with 253 votes in the electoral college, we have just heard that the state of pennsylvania, they may have a result there today. joe biden is closing there today. joe biden is closing the gap. if you were to win in pennsylvania, he would have 273 votes in the electoral college, he would be president, windy? yes, he would be president, windy? yes, he would be president, windy? yes, he would be the president—elect. if he becomes jet... would be the president—elect. if he becomesjet... at there's would be the president—elect. if he becomes jet... at there's a lot would be the president—elect. if he becomesjet... at there's a lot of ifs. we went to election night say that was going to the largest historical political blow in

american history. there was far from it. let us have a legally casted votes be counted. that is what we wa nt votes be counted. that is what we want to take place. why change the rules midstream or it seems rather unfair. there is a lot of speculation and the canfield feels confident that the campaign will go their way. they feel strong about pennsylvania and georgia. that the legally casted votes be counted and we'll see where the chips fall. brian, briefly, if the president we re brian, briefly, if the president were to lose, could he be the candidate in the next election? he would be formidable. he is going to be one of the largest getters in american history for a president. he extended beyond his 2016 base by about 5 million votes. i don't see anybody in the republican horizon challenging him seriously. he will be the nominee if it was at his beck and call. thank you so much for

joining us. so there you have it. if president trump does not win this election, he could be the candidate next time round. waiting for all the votes to be counted on bbc news. hello there. we had some big temperature contrasts across the uk on thursday. in the south, temperatures got to a ten or 11 degrees in the sunshine, but across the north it was much warmer than that with highs of 18 degrees in durham and widely across northern scotland, 15 or 16 degrees. the reason we had those big contrasts in that temperatures comes about because of, in part, where the air came from. the start of the month, this cooler air in the south was sat across canada, whereas this much milder airfurther north was sat around the bahamas and that is partly why we had those high temperatures across northern areas, the fern effect also helped boost the temperaturse and bring that warm air down to the surface. looking at the weather picture overnight, those differences in air masses lead to

quite different weather overnight. mist and fog again for england and wales with those temperatures in the countryside dropping below freezing, so frost in places. scotland and northern ireland, it stays quite cloudy and relatively mild as well. so, for friday, further contrasts around. mist and fog across england and wales will tend to lift into low cloud. that could lingerfor a time before breaking with spells of sunshine coming through. the best of the sunshine really is we have through the afternoon. for scotland, probably quite cloudy and notice a much cooler day for aberdeen, 12 degrees here compared with the 16 we had on thursday afternoon. the weekend sees the wind switch more south or south easterly direction. we do have weather fronts on the charge moving across the uk and they will be bringing rain at times. so, on the weather menu for the weekend, it does tend to become cloudier through the weekend with some spells of rain and it will eventually turn milder from the south. that milder air would be moving in across parts of england in wales as we go through saturday,
6:57 pm
so that milder air will come more cloud and temperatures of 15 or 16 degrees through the afternoon with a threat of rain throughout the south of england. a cold and frosty start for the north with some fog patches. that frosty start in glasgow and those temperatures will struggle with highs of seven celsius. for sunday, notice much more in the way of cloud widely across the uk and there will be some further outbreaks of rain, the rain heavier and more widespread as well. it will start to turn that bit milder. 11 or 12 degrees in glasgow and 15 or 16 in cardiff and london. that's your weather.

hello, i'm ros atkins, this is 0utside source. joe biden is closing the gap in the race for the white house but either candidate could still win. counting continues in the states that will decide it — georgia, arizona, nevada and pennsylvania are among those still to declare the trump campaign launches multiple lawsuits — they want a recount in wisconsin — and donald trump wants late arriving votes to be thrown out. trump supporters have been protesting outside counting centres, the biden campaign says they want every vote to be counted. i'm not here to declare that we won, but i am here to report when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners.
