this is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. the race for the white house is coming down to the final tally of ballots in some key battleground states. georgia, arizona, nevada and pennsylvania are among those still to declare. joe biden insists that every vote will be given the respect it deserves. each ballot must be counted. we have no doubt that when the count is finished, senator harris and i will be declared the winners. president trump is due to speak in about half an hour — his campaign has launched legal bids to stop the count in several states.
11:01 pm
good evening. a day after one of the most divisive elections in american history, there's no outright result, but president trump's democratic challengerjoe biden is edging ever closer to victory. there are still some tight races in a handful of key states. americans have been closely watching the number of electoral college votes each candidate has received. joe biden has received 253 votes, donald trump has 214. the candidate who reaches 270 will be the winner. but so far its been a bruising battle. our north america editor jon sopel reports. as america waits, so impatience grows and protests are cropping up in all the states where counting is still going on. god bless america! god bless trump!
11:02 pm
there are mainly trump supporters, but last night what they were chanting depended on where they were. stop the count! this is detroit, michigan, where donald trump had a narrowing lead, and his fans are shouting, "stop the count". stop the count! but go west to arizona, where donald trump is trailing, and what's the cry? "count those votes". the charge from trump surrogates is that the democrats are trying to steal the election. we are filing this federal lawsuit to protect legal voters. it is unacceptable in this country to have illegal votes counted. you guysjust made the claim. after this news conference, rick grenell, donald trump's former director of national intelligence, was chased by a reporter to explain what the fraud is. where is the evidence of the fraud? you haven't presented any evidence.
11:03 pm
as things stand, we're waiting for counting to finish in arizona, nevada, wherejoe biden holds narrow leads — and in the north—east and georgia in the south, where the president is just about ahead. in georgia, we had this update on the pressures facing the counting staff. fast is great, and we appreciate fast. we more appreciate accuracy. accuracy is going to be the bedrock upon which people will believe the outcome of this election, be that the winning side or the losing side. donald trump hasn't spoken publicly since he made this statement on election night, but his campaign have launched multiple lawsuits since then, demanding a recount in wisconsin, calling for counting to be stopped in other states, alleging fraud in nevada. and he's tweeted this.
11:04 pm
the tweet has been flagged by twitter for being misleading. the democrats are watching all of this warily, and have an army of lawyers ready to go into battle if that's what this election comes down to. we have no doubt that when the count is finished, senator harris and i will be declared the winners. so i ask everyone to stay calm, all the people to stay calm. the process is working. the count is being completed and we'll know very soon. neither side is giving an inch. neither side is giving up. there's defiance from the trump camp, determination from biden. who's going to prevail? watch this space. jon sopel, bbc news, washington. joe biden speaking in the last few hours. our correspondent barbara plett usher is in delaware the joe biden‘s hq.
11:05 pm
the culligan for common patients, everything running smoothly for biden‘s team. everything running smoothly for biden's team. yes, that's right, he gave us statements, basically a call for faith gave us statements, basically a call forfaith and gave us statements, basically a call for faith and of patients. gave us statements, basically a call forfaith and of patients. he didn't make a declaration of victory, but he tried to reassure supporters that the vote counting process was working. he said it needed to play its course, but then he again repeated that he was confident once all the votes had been counted, that he would be the winner. what he has been doing today is trying to show that he's getting on with work. he had a briefing about the coronavirus, he had a briefing about the economy, i think trying to send the economy, i think trying to send the message that once and if he is able to take over the reins, that he would get very serious about getting down to work as quickly as possible, but before that happens, if it's going to happen, they need to have those votes. so here tonight, eve ryo ne those votes. so here tonight, everyone on the campaign is watching anxiously as the vote counts
11:06 pm
continue to take out. there are a number of states still outstanding, as you are hearing from john there. most recently, press conference from pennsylvania, saying that the overwhelming majority of votes had been counted there, but because the race was very types, they still didn't know who had one, a couple hundred thousand to go. that's ongoing. arizona, ongoing, georgia, nevada, those places, people are watching. if one of those states, two of those states break forjoe biden in the next couple of hours, i think we can expect some kind of victory announcements from the stage behind me. there was a little bit of activity there earlier, and hasn't been since election night, so perhaps just getting into been since election night, so perhapsjust getting into ready position it case that happens. but they are very confident here that they are very confident here that they will be able to make some kind of announcement like that over the course of the next 2a hours. barbara, are you hearing anything from the biden team about the different lawsuits, the legal actions being taken by the trump
11:07 pm
team? yes, they have dismissed them pretty much out of hand. i think the word was something like laughably ridiculous or something like that, impossible to really take seriously that they would go anywhere on merit. so they were completely dismissive about the merits of the cases filed. and it has to be said that in georgia, and in michigan, judges have dismissed cases that mr trump's lawyers filed related to voterfraud. trump's lawyers filed related to voter fraud. what he did trump's lawyers filed related to voterfraud. what he did get trump's lawyers filed related to voter fraud. what he did get was an order in pennsylvania to allow the trump observers to stand closer to election counting, but that hasn't stopped the election come to get so. we do understand though that mr trump is going to pursue this line it to say that even ifjoe biden claims victory, not to concede, but in the states where he claims victory, to continue to challenge and say, "this is voter fraud, victory, to continue to challenge and say, "this is voterfraud, the election is being stolen." and to continue to apply the courts with lawsuits, even if they are done on thin evidence, as we have seen
11:08 pm
before. that evidence was not stated as one of those press conferences. mrtrump is set as one of those press conferences. mr trump is set to speak very shortly for the first time since election night. so we will wait to see what he has to say. we certainly will. we will bring that lie. barbara, as always, thank you very much. welcome as barbara was mentioning, so next joe biden now needs two states to win orjust pennsylvania, with its 20 electoral college votes. donald trump has a harder task — he must win pennsylvania and take three other states to remain president. mr trump held a half a million vote lead in the count but it's been whittled down to less than 80,000 in the past few minutes. let's get more from our correspondent, michelle fleury, who's outside the counting hall in philadelphia. there are 20 electoral votes in the state of pennsylvania, enough to get joe biden to the magic number of 270, or enough to significantly boost the chances of donald trump to let him have four more years in the
11:09 pm
white house. legal challenges are flying. donald trump and his team a short while ago speaking about action they are taking in federal court involving ballot watchers and how close they can stand to those who are doing the count. the secretary of state, kathy,is count. the secretary of state, kathy, is speaking... we are coming in the home stretch year, they have been working incredibly hard. hundreds of thousands of ballots have been counted so far today and we are in very good shape, but there is still some to count. so they are working incredibly hard, they're going to keep counting into the evening. you know, stay tuned. she has not yet said that there is a timeline and pointed out that they are still receiving mail in ballots from military personnel and those who live overseas. given how slim the margin between these two candidates right now, it is entirely possible that the answer to the future direction of this country could lie
11:10 pm
in the building behind me and the hopes are that tonight or in the next 48 hours, we will find out what it is. michelle fleury there in philadelphia, pennsylvania. in georgia, president trump lead overjoe biden has been whittled away as the mail—in votes are counted. with 98% of the votes counted, his lead overjoe biden is less than 10,000. earlier we go an update from the voting system implementation manager for the state, gabriel sterling on how long the process was likely to take. we anticipate having to —— the count done when the legal certification is which is ten days after the election. that is when we are done, because there are ballots that are still coming in, ballots to be cured, ballots that are provisional that are to be verified. so, we can't know how long the process will take. we hope to have clarity on the outcomes of these elections as soon as possible, however, when you have some important elections being so close done, it's a very relative
11:11 pm
turn to you term at this point. we are trying to get all the legal votes counted accurately so we can get the right results and make sure that everybody's vote is refracted properly. so it's all about the right results. larry madowo, is following the vote count in fulton county, atlanta in ga. that lead is getting whittled down a little bit, we have had some movements, larry. absolutely. the lead was about midday today, president trump had a lead of about 20,000, right now the lead is about 9400. wejust 20,000, right now the lead is about 9400. we just heard from the secretary of state's office here in georgia that they still have about 36,000 votes to count. so when that's all done, it might mean that president trump extends his lead or it might mean that his lead disappears entirely and joe biden leads the state of georgia. larry, when it comes to where these mailing votes are coming from, can you just talk us through briefly what kind of
11:12 pm
leaning those areas have? everybody is trying to read the tea leaves about that and trying to take apart the map of the state of georgia and go county by county, how they voted in 2016 can have a traditionally vote. and the general thinking, every a nalyst vote. and the general thinking, every analyst appears to coalesce around the thought that the outstanding ballots appeared to come from predominantly democratic heavy areas and counties that are more racially diverse that have voted traditionally in the past for democratic candidates and that is a good sign thatjoe biden campaign is leaning on and hoping that they are proven right when the final votes are counted that they can still turn this thing around, because georgia 16 electoral college votes will really help them get closer to their 270 figure that is so important to them. but also, another one of those things of importance is that there two senate seats up for grabs here. if the democrats can take both of those seats currently held by republicans, they will have control
11:13 pm
of the senate ifjoe biden wins and the vice president can cast a breaking type. right now, looks like both of those senate seats might eventually go into a runoff in january. larry, you are going to be back there. i know we were all really getting to grips with the map of the us. there is something else. yes, i'm sorry, once again, expecting a press conference from donald trumpjunior here. so more news from us sometime soon. no rest for larry. larry, thank you so much, yes, as and when that happens, we will try and join larry there in georgia. 0f that happens, we will try and join larry there in georgia. of course, lots going on there. stay with us on bbc news, still to come: where does america go from here? we've been finding out what people think of the election and how they can heal the country's bitter divisions the israeli prime minister, yitzhak rabin, the architect of the middle east peace process
11:14 pm
has been assassinated. a 27—year—old jewish man has been arrested and an extremistjewish organisation has claimed responsibility for the killing. at polling booths throughout the country they voted on an historic day for australia. as the results came in, it was clear, the monarchy would survive. of the american hostages, there was no sign. they are being held somewhere inside the compound. and student leaders have threatened that should the americans attempt rescue, they will all die. this mission has surpassed all expectations. voyager one is now the most distant man—made object anywhere in the universe, and itjust seems to keep on going. tonight, we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth but from the enduring power of our ideals.
11:15 pm
this is bbc news, the latest headlines... vote counting continues in the us presidential election. joe biden has appealed for calm, and says he expects that when all the votes are counted, he will have won. president trump is due to speak in a few minutes — his campaign has launched legal bids to stop the count, and will challenge what he says was voter fraud. the fight over the election is heading into the courts. donald trump is threatening to file law suits in some states that are being projected forjoe biden, and others where we have no projection. these lawsuits are trying to stop the counting of votes on the grounds of voter fraud — but so far we've seen no evidence that widespread fraud is happening. nevada is the latest to be sued. this is the co—chair of the trump campaign there. there are examples of thousands of ballots being mailed across this valley in trash cans, in apartment buildings, people getting as many as 18
11:16 pm
ballots to their homes. we knew these rules were unclean, and we were told that signatures would save us from all fraud, but to date, we have still not been able to observe these signatures. we go now to nuala mcgovern is in reno, nevada. talk us through these allegations. well, it's really quite something that you are seeing across the united states. hello to all of our reviewers and welcome to reno nevada, the biggest little city in the world come as it's called. i'm down at city plaza, you will see some people skateboarding recycling behind me, maybe dog walking is welcome it's a warm afternoon here, but it's the same thing that everybody is talking about. really, how they see this story in these allegations that you have just played depends sometimes on your political strife. democrats instead are saying there is very much no
11:17 pm
evidence, but have also bumped into people today that are concerned that in fact there might be some sort of vote rigging or fraud. in fact there might be some sort of vote rigging orfraud. i in fact there might be some sort of vote rigging or fraud. i think what we need to remember here with nevada, this is the silver state. it has six electoral college votes. we are trying to get that magic number of 270. and it very much matters. in fa ct, of 270. and it very much matters. in fact, they have a hashtag online that our viewers might like to take a look at, it's hashtag we matter. they realise that this place could potentially pave the way forjoe biden to make his way to the white house if in fact believe that he currently has sustains. that's 11400 currently has sustains. that's11400 and some change. but it may not. and here's the reason why. in nevada, if your ballot has been postmarked by election day, right, so last tuesday, it will be counted. it may ta ke tuesday, it will be counted. it may take more days for all of those ballots to come in. they don't even know how many are still actually in
11:18 pm
transition before they get counted. we are expecting at nine o'clock this morning to have some sort of count, to be able to call perhaps some sort of order. that's out the window. he said tomorrow morning, that may not happen either. in fact, some are saying november 12, in fa ct, some are saying november 12, in fact, the allegations, two cases so that have been thrown out. this one, let's what happens. i think also our reviewers should know that in reno, this is this county, it's trending blue, as is clark county, which you hear a lot about, think about las vegas. the rest of it is red. it is rural. so these two places, reno and las vegas are very important, will it actually turned blue? willjoe biden be able to pick up those electoral votes? these two places are known for casinos, but even if i we re are known for casinos, but even if i were a gambling woman, i wouldn't make a bet just yet. were a gambling woman, i wouldn't make a betjust yet. 0h, very nicely done. thank you so much.
11:19 pm
now, just a couple of points there, really crucial issues. let's focus in on some of these allegations with clark county commissioner— justin jones— and elected representatives overseeing the vote count in nevada. he's also a member of the democratic party. inc. you so much forjoining me. ijust party. inc. you so much forjoining me. i just want to party. inc. you so much forjoining me. ijust want to pick up on some of the trump claims that there are legal votes from people including those who became nonresidents during the coronavirus pandemic or who are deadin the coronavirus pandemic or who are dead in nevada. can you talk us through what these claims are and whether there was any potential truth in this? look, the republicans, the trump campaign have brought several lawsuits against clark county, against the state of nevada over the last few weeks trying to stop the votes, and so far, they've been completely u nsuccessful. far, they've been completely unsuccessful. they threatened another lawsuit this morning and at the press conference, they provided no support whatsoever and i saw a
11:20 pm
request that went out from the state republican party asking for people that might be able to support these claims. so it's basically after—the—fact asking for plaintiffs of the lawsuit this morning, i can tell you from our exciting clark county, we have seen no evidence of fraud whatsoever. so with this latest lawsuit, what is your reckoning of how that will go then? i think it will go as the same as the prior lawsuits. there are no evidence and i think it will be thrown out just as evidence and i think it will be thrown outjust as the other ones have. we are confident in clark county, 90% of the outstanding votes are that we will continue to count ina are that we will continue to count in a safe and fair manner, and at the end of the day, the results will be what they are, and the secretary of state who has a republican will certify those election results of the appropriate time. certify those election results of the appropriate timelj certify those election results of the appropriate time. i dare ask, but when will we hear a result?
11:21 pm
well, i think you've got some additional results today, there was additional results today, there was additional processing of ballots and counting that went on in clark cou nty counting that went on in clark county author today and will continue on the rest of the day, and then there will be additional results that are posted tomorrow morning. we are anticipating an excess of 50,000 additional votes that will be posted tomorrow and we will continue the accounting and processing of ballots. this is not an easy process. here in southern nevada, we have people voting in person, we sent mail ballots to every single active registered voter, and try to essentially run does make different types of elections at the same time is a challenge. but i tell you, our clark cou nty challenge. but i tell you, our clark county elections workers and all the volu nteers county elections workers and all the volunteers really stepped up the plates and are working tirelessly day in, day out as they have for weeks now even under the threat of those who have brought it against them. justin jones, cook county commissioner nevada. think so much
11:22 pm
for talking us through thank you. let's turn to the midwestern state of wisconsin now — where the bbc is projecting that joe biden will win. 99 % of the votes have been counted, with mr biden in front by 20,000. president trump has already demanded a recount. the bbcs yalda hakim has been following the race from milwaukee. the bbc has now projected wisconsin forjoe biden with less than 21,000 votes. that very much mirrors what happened here in 2016 when donald trump won the state with less than 23,000 votes beating hillary clinton. now, that was projected by many us networks here yesterday, and the democrats declared victory. the trump party then contested that and said that they wanted a recount. they're in a position to ask for that now, and they will have to pay for it. now, the way that the recount works here is that if the margin is 1% or less, you can ask for that. that will now happen. the donald trump campaign has asked for that. they won't be able to do that until december the 1st,
11:23 pm
when the state certifies the actual result. now, the election commission has weighed in, it's asked for patience and for calm. it says they are very much proud of the way that the election panned out and the way that the counting is taken place. they said that everything is very transparent, that the process is very meticulous, that it's open to public scrutiny and the counting was streamed live so the public could watch that. and frankly, that it was offensive that these kinds of voter fraud allegations have been made. 0ur correspondent aleem maqbool has been speaking to people in wisconsin — one of the most fiercly contested states — to find out how the bitter battle has affected the public mood. even in quaint suburban america right now, in these fractious times, it's them and us. but there are those trying to come together. when tim had his biden sign stolen, his trump—supporting neighbor, josh, surprised him with a replacement. i knowjosh is a member of the republican party, and so, you know, for him to come and do something like that was
11:24 pm
pretty outstanding. so, in the course of our conversation, i realised thatjosh is, you know, regular person first and a republican second. but the situation nationally is causing tension. i think people's wicks are just a little bit shorter than they used to be. i think people are afraid. they're afraid of what the economy looks like, they're afraid of the unknown, and so that fear becomes anger. even outside the white house on election night, we saw radical elements on the left make an appearance. in recent months, far right militia have also made their presence felt in many parts of the country. antifascist activist vaughn mays has been arrested several times for alleged violence,
11:25 pm
but now predicts trouble from the other side. i live in a state where we saw armed protesters, trump supporters, storm the capital because they did not want to follow mask mandates, and they did not want their businesses to shut down. they wanted to be able get, in theirwords, haircuts. and so if they would go to those heights and those levels for mask mandates, it's definitely concerning what they would do if their president is not reelected, especially when he's been putting it out there that if he doesn't win, it's rigged, or it's some sort of conspiracy against him, and that they should fight back. there's little doubt that the angry rhetoric and political discourse at the top has led to more animosity among some elements at least on the ground. the fear is, because this has already been a contentious election and promises to be into the days and weeks to come, that will only lead to greater divisions in american society. aleem maqbool, bbc news,

milwaukee, wisconsin. just as a donald trump is due to speak shortly. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. we had some big temperature contrasts across the uk on thursday. in the south, temperatures got to a ten or 11 degrees in the sunshine, but across the north it was much warmer than that with highs of 18 degrees in durham and widely across northern scotland, 15 or 16 degrees. the reason we had those big contrasts in that temperatures comes about because of, in part, where the air came from. the start of the month, this cooler air in the south was sat across canada, whereas this much milder airfurther north was sat around the bahamas and that is partly why we had those high temperatures across northern areas, the fern effect also helped boost the temperaturse and bring that warm air down to the surface. looking at the weather picture
11:27 pm
overnight, those differences in air masses lead to quite different weather overnight. mist and fog again for england and wales with those temperatures in the countryside dropping below freezing, so frost in places. scotland and northern ireland, it stays quite cloudy and relatively mild as well. so, for friday, further contrasts around. mist and fog across england and wales will tend to lift into low cloud. that could lingerfor a time before thinning breaking with spells of sunshine coming through. the best of the sunshine really is we have through the afternoon. for scotland, probably quite cloudy and notice a much cooler day for aberdeen, 12 degrees here compared with the 16 we had on thursday afternoon. the weekend sees the wind switch more south or south easterly direction. we do have weather fronts on the chart moving across the uk and they will be bringing rain at times. so, on the weather menu for the weekend, it does tend to become cloudier through the weekend with some spells of rain, it will eventually turn milderfrom the south. that milder air would be moving in across parts of england and wales as we go through saturday, so with that milder air will come more cloud and temperatures of 15 or 16
11:28 pm
degrees through the afternoon with the threat of rain throughout the southwest of england. a cold and frosty start for the north with some fog patches. after that frosty start in glasgow those temperatures will struggle with highs of seven celsius. for sunday, notice much more in the way of cloud widely across the uk and there will be some further outbreaks of rain, the rain heavier and probably more widespread as well. it will start to turn that bit milder. 11 degrees in glasgow and 15 or 16 in cardiff and london. that's your weather.
11:30 pm
hello, i'm katty kay in washington, the result of the us presidential election still hangs in the balance, as counting in key swing states continues and the result too close to call. we are told that the president, donald trump, is going to make a statement from the white house any moment now. we house any moment now. can show you the picture briefing we can show you the picture of the briefing room that is all the tv correspondence, cameras there. we wa nt to correspondence, cameras there. we want to bring you their live and see what the president has deciphered that we haven't heard from the president in person sense election night when he came out about 2am in the morning and said that he believed he had already won the election. he has been tweeting a lot today about votes and wanting the vote count to be stopped. the white house is also launched several lawsuits in different states to try and get the vote count either stopped or to have their monitors in there watching it. we have the bbc‘s
