' - “lawn! iv» “gig; states as he edges ahead in key battleground states. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me, and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are.
6:31 pm
you are watching bbc news. let's bring you up—to—date with the headlines this hour. joe biden has pushed ahead in the crucial state of pennsylvania and his lead keeps growing in almost all the remaining states as counting continues, three
6:32 pm
days after the elections. joe biden has also taken the lead in georgia, but the margin there is thin. state officials have announced they will be a recount. as for the candidates, joe biden calls for calm and patience as the trump campaign insists it is not over yet. now, let's cross live to nevada where we can speak to james clayton. james, loss of information coming to us james, loss of information coming to us from officials there that have been speaking within the last half hour and we understand that there is still some way to go for all the counting to finish? that's right, yet. it looks likejoe biden is about 20,000 votes ahead, he was about 10,000 votes ahead yesterday, so as these votes are being counted by dint seem to be increasing his lead. a little similarto increasing his lead. a little similar to other states, in fact. so it is going to be very, very close here. we think about 92% of the
6:33 pm
balance have been counted. it is difficult to know totally because there is a rule here that says that as long as you decided to vote by mailand as long as you decided to vote by mail and you as long as you decided to vote by mailand you did as long as you decided to vote by mail and you did it before the 3rd of november or on the 3rd of november, that will still count even if it receives, this voting station, seven days after that. so it is very difficult to know exactly how many votes that are yet to be counted but it is within the region of 7%, 8%. biden is very much a head here. just to say that the nevada independent, which is very well respected here, they have already called nevada for biden. so it does appear that this state is inching towards democrat that it state is inching towards democrat thatitis state is inching towards democrat that it is very difficult to call this even now. yeah, we also heard james from the nevada official saying that 60,000 provisional ballots were also awaiting review and an additional there remain 63,000 mail—in ballots to be counted so that really gives a sense of where we have out there. i am not sure if you are aware of what
6:34 pm
he also said regarding the fact that he also said regarding the fact that he fears some of the staff are being threatened or under a loss of stress by demonstrators there. can you elaborate on that for us? he said that yesterday as well. basically what happens is as the day develops here in clark county, which is in las vegas, more and is about to filtering in the atmosphere does change slightly so by about 6p and here this place is full of trump supporters and that can be very intimidating for workers here and remember, a small place like this, source of a warehouse in the desert, usually the voters are the ballots counted here won't be used as a kind of pressure and this is where the election could be won and lost on it is an awful lot of pressure on these ballot counters. the trump protesters know that too. i have to say, i haven't seen any threatening behaviour from constable to so far, but i could also see why the atmosphere might feel rather
6:35 pm
threatening. 0na threatening. on a lighter note, and i don't know if this is lighter for people who live there, it has also been on social media, a lot of memes have been posted about nevada bearing the brunt ofjokes been posted about nevada bearing the brunt of jokes for been posted about nevada bearing the brunt ofjokes for being so slow to come their tally. did you say is so slow to count their tally? basically, the registrar here wants to get everything right. he says he wants to make sure he got all the eyes and crosses all that he's because this is very close but you are right, all over social media people are posting all sorts of means suggesting that nevada should maybe copy sunderland pulse like example in the uk which cou nts pulse like example in the uk which counts the ballots in like 45 minutes. nevada, it has been well over two days, three days and they have got a result here. and they are not alone. they are not alone in that slow tally and i think many people have been looking at nevada and it is important because it carries six electoral college votes there and very much a sense
6:36 pm
110w votes there and very much a sense now that, as we are perhaps edging towards a result in the coming days andindeed towards a result in the coming days and indeed perhaps even in the coming weeks, that this, perhaps, could be a place where the focus is on in terms of what the make—up has been for the voters who have turned out in the favour of either donald trump or biden. did you say what the make—up is their cost, sorry? i can't quite hear you there. indeed, james. people will be poring over the date of who those people are voted on how they had voted on where and if it is in line with many predictions that were made for nevada. yeah, exactly. i mean the big issue here, something that all people will be looking at is the latina vote, the asian—american vote, the black vote. white voters are getting, i think they are sort of 70 or 80%, even back in the 70s and 80s, it has been reducing a lot more recently so there are lots of demographic shifts here and it may well be the case that a lot of voters did move out of
6:37 pm
nevada, particularly las vegas, because las vegas has been awfully hit by coronavirus. lots of unemployment here and so that will be interesting to, to see whether the votes here was down because so many people, sort of, left las vegas for employment reasons that will be some thing else to watch out for. 0k,james, thank you some thing else to watch out for. 0k, james, thank you very much at that. james clayton ever putting live from nevada. so we, of course, are keeping all our eyes on the bottom of your screen there which is of course 270, that is the magic number to of course 270, that is the magic numberto win of course 270, that is the magic number to win the office of presidency at the white house. it all mess and what is the electoral couege all mess and what is the electoral college vote that currently have joe biden on 253 and donald trump and 214. we are world so watching arizona for
6:38 pm
you. joe biden is currently ahead thereby over 43,000 votes even though it is traditionally republican state and comes about not happy in some of them are protesting. this is where we can hear from protesting. this is where we can hearfrom a protesting. this is where we can hear from a west coast correspondent. this protest in downtown phoenix has only been under way for a matter of minutes. there are already 500 600 people here. it isa are already 500 600 people here. it is a noisy protest but at the moment non—violent. just to let you know, we have at the election centre in downtown phoenix. that building is behind this is where the votes are still being counted. the latest figure we have is that there are still more than 150,000 votes to be counted in manitoba county alone, which is really the population centre of arizona. it includes phoenix and all its surrounding suburbs. the protests have increased in numbers and volume and energy over the last few days as the gap between the two candidates narrows. now, the latest figure we have is that there is just 1.4 percentage
6:39 pm
point between them. we have had pictures from members of the ultra—right, chanting count the vote, stop the steel, and they are calling for a full audit and recount of votes, not just calling for a full audit and recount of votes, notjust here in arizona but across the country. so for long there. let's ta ke let's take to live now to wilmington delaware bay headquarters wherejoe biden currently is. we were talking very much about how there is more activity where you are definitely more movement in terms security services. yes, that's right. the security services have extended a temporary flight services have extended a temporary flight restriction zone around joe biden‘s home. it has been a mile in diameter or circumference since he became a nominee, and that has been extended to three miles now. we understand that this is a precautionary measure which would be standard and we have also seen an
6:40 pm
uptick in the security service personnel who are going to be protecting him and the expectation, it is all part of the expectation here in wilmington that he will become the president elect. i think the question on everybody‘s mind is when? so we understand the campaign is planning for him to give a player 01’ is planning for him to give a player or prime—time speech. later on tonight. but, again, that may depend on when the race is called. 0f course, you know, it hasn't been culled yet so we have to say and if there but here in delaware with the biden campaign team they are pretty confident, very confidence, in fact, that when the votes are counted he will be announced as president, as they have been saying all along since the election day. yes, they have been confident since tuesday but it has been a composed confidence, hasn't it? will not hasn't swayed it all up until today.
6:41 pm
well, they were pretty clear eyed, as they say here, about what to expect. they held briefings telling us expect. they held briefings telling us that, 0k, there was, mrtrump expect. they held briefings telling us that, 0k, there was, mr trump was in the lead in certain places, which they had expected, because more of his supporters voted in person on election day than mr biden‘s supporters but they were very clear that the mail—in voting, of which there has been, as we all know, an exponential amount this year, would be counted later, and that it would fade favour mr biden and so they can be presented their data as they were monitoring that and told us that all along when those male in the votes we re along when those male in the votes were counted he would pull into the lead and that is what we're seeing 110w lead and that is what we're seeing now in places like pennsylvania, which is, of course, very important to the biden campaign. if he does ta ke to the biden campaign. if he does take pennsylvania then he will be winning back those rust belt states that president trump flipped in 2016, which gave him the victory then, so this is a very key moment
6:42 pm
for the biden campaign and they are waiting to see when that will be cold but in other states, too, as you have been hearing from around the country, he has... in some places as those mail—in votes have been counted and they have throughout the week been telling is where things stood, what they believe it was going on, and have co nsta ntly believe it was going on, and have constantly projected confidence that he would ultimately be announced president. what has gone right, barbara, for the biden campaign? i'm sorry, can you repeat that please? what has gone right in terms of their strategy which brings us to their strategy which brings us to the point that we are looking at the moment for biden campaign? well, they have been reaching out in particular, as i was saying, to these three rust belt states. they have been capitalising on discontent with the way the president has handled the coronavirus, although they thought they would get more support in that regard than they did because it turned out that the... that many people rated the economy
6:43 pm
above the coronavirus he voted for president trump. demographics have been going right to the campaign as well. the suburbs, suburbs have been going for mr biden with the white vote there upset about how mr trump has behaved. they have had quite a large turnout of black voters. this has been particularly important in georgia, as we have been hearing. that has been related to domestic local politics there surrounding the realm of a comma in the governors race two years ago, they registered a lot more black voters, so these kinds of things have been favouring their campaign. kinds of things have been favouring theircampaign. i kinds of things have been favouring their campaign. i have to say that there has been some question about how they run the campaign here, the biden campaign, because mr biden has been very much out of sight, not doing the kind of public events that mrtrump did, saying doing the kind of public events that mr trump did, saying this is because of the coronavirus, but also not having people go door to door knocking, registering voters, asking them to come out and vote which is what the republicans are doing so they had been a question all along whether they were miscalculating
6:44 pm
there. again, we were told this week by the campaign they were quite confident they had done the right thing andi confident they had done the right thing and i think as they see the mail—in votes coming they will say that, you know, this vindicates their strategy. but, again, that, you know, this vindicates theirstrategy. but, again, i that, you know, this vindicates their strategy. but, again, iwould add to all of that they had been hoping for a massive wave, a kind of com plete hoping for a massive wave, a kind of complete blow out victory. we will be seen, perhaps, model of a victory that had been anticipated mid week but you also saying that mr trump had picked up quite a list of those votes. you're not seeing a clear repudiation of his presidency and so thatis repudiation of his presidency and so that is something that will make, that is something that will make, that would make, governing more difficult for mr biden, especially if they do not get the senate, especially if they don't get a sweep of congress which is very much in question at the moment. barbara, thank you. it is a was great to get your insight into this. i know you have covered a fair few elections. 0ur correspondent that live in wilmington, delaware, the headquarters, of course, ofjoe biden where he is at the moment.
6:45 pm
we have just received a statement from the white house. this is the word of donald trump. he says we will this goal pursue this process for every aspect of the loss of blood and guaranteed american peace and pull have full confidence that government. —— we will pursue this process for every aspect that we can to guarantee that american people have full confidence in their government. that is president trump they are vowing to continue his legal fight at the democratic that i rivaljoe biden is edging close enough to win enough votes to win the presidency. as we say, it is already incredibly close and number of states, rehea rd already incredibly close and number of states, reheard that there is a recount under way in georgia, that comment was, donald trump already staying incredibly defined that he is going to continue, in his words, the legal fight. more than that to come and we will get analysis were massing in washington with gary 0'donoghue who is cabot of course is
