the nation and the world on the ballot count in the us election. in georgia, we already know there will be a recount. the final tally in georgia at this point has huge implications for the entire country. joe biden is expected to address the nation tonight, his supporters hope it'll be a victory speech, but with the count as it stands, he might just rally the troops. looking at the numbers, it could be pennsylvania that tips the balance. the democratic mayor of the state's biggest city says president trump should admit defeat. i think what the president needs to do is frankly put his big boy pants on. he needs to acknowledge the fact that he lost, and he needs to congratulate the winner. the gap between donald trump and joe biden may be growing — but the race in the remaining

battleground states is still incredibly close. battleground states reeta chakrabarti takes a look at the electoral map and where the presidency will be decided. this is the state of play at the moment. this is the electoral map, and you can see the states in grey are the ones that are still to be decided, and there are some very close races going on. it's so close in georgia that they're going for a recount. arizona is also extremely close. pennsylvania in the east, which we have all been focused on all day, well, there we have seenjoe biden edge his way past donald trump. and the democrats are now confident that they will take pennsylvania. what happens if they do? well, let me turn pennsylvania blue using the blue pen, and you can see that takesjoe biden passed the winning line, and he will then have won the election. but what's interesting... i will take pennsylvania away from him. joe biden has other routes to the white house too. let's assume that he succeeds in keeping nevada —
10:32 pm
hillary clinton won that in 2016 — and that he manages to flip arizona as well. that gets into 270 as well. so there are different routes forjoe biden to the white house. i will return the map to the state of play to show you that for donald trump, it's more difficult. he's got to win pennsylvania. and then also three of the four other major swing states in order to stay in the white house. a much more uphill task. there's one more screen that i want to show you, a set of figures that are very eye—catching. this is the national popular vote. now, this isn't how the election is decided, but these are very interesting figures nonetheless. look at that, joe biden has won 7a million votes. that's over 11 million more than hillary clinton got in 2016. and donald trump has outperformed himself. he's got over 8 million votes more than he got last time around. so figures like that do not suggest — as some
10:33 pm
commentators have been saying — that this has been a complete repudiation of the trump project, because he has outperformed himself from four years ago. we expect to hear from joe biden in the next few hours also important to say that it's been a historically high turnout as well. we expect to hear from joe biden in the next few hours from his hq in delaware. our correspondent barbara plett usher is there. so we are not really expecting a victory speech, of course, because we still don't have the answer to the big question of who has won the us presidency. that's right. democrats here, the biden campaign have been waiting all day to see if this is going to be decision day. they are, as you reported, very confident that they are on the path to victory, especially with the results coming out of pennsylvania, the question is when enough votes will be counted for them. the question is when enough votes will
10:34 pm
be counted to actually be able to declare that victory. so early on, we we re declare that victory. so early on, we were told that they were expecting to have mr biden addressed the nation during primetime hours. a lot of activity preparing the stage just behind me where he came out on election night. so we are now not quite sure what to expect because, as you were saying, it does seem as ifa as you were saying, it does seem as if a victory speech will probably not be on order tonight. what else would you say, and where would he say at? it's a little bit in flux at the moment, but we do know that for the moment, but we do know that for the democratic campaign, the issue is not so much if he will declare himself president or he will be declared president but when, and that has not been determined just now as we speak. talk us through, barbara, the mood there. we have been hearing the house speaker, nancy pelosi, describing joe biden as president—elect, a little bit jumping the gun i guess. yes, i
10:35 pm
mean, they are ecstatic, especially when they saw the figures turned this morning. their strategy had been to get as many male in votes as possible, postal votes, and they knew that that meant that the counting would probably first favour mrtrump who had counting would probably first favour mr trump who had in person advantage and that this sort of blueshift would happen later and afterwards, after election day is that counting went on, but they kept briefing about that some kept telling us they have their eyes on the figures. he knew that this would happen. now that it does seem to be happening, know that mr biden has been overtaking the president and not just one state, but several battleground states, they are really excited that their full strategy has been vindicated. also, especially in pennsylvania, because the main core of their strategy was to take back those rust belt states that president trump slipped in 2016,
10:36 pm
that's what helped them to win then. and mr biden had been focusing most of his campaigning there, especially in pennsylvania, he did it 19 times, and it looks now as a fat has been worth the effort. so, they are sitting on pins and needles waiting for when that announcement will come. they will have to make decisions if it does come. they will have to make decisions about how to proceed, because they are not expecting that trump would be prepared to concede, he has made that quite obvious, how they would proceed with the transition period if mr biden is named by the news organisations as president—elect. this is all uncharted territory, how to ta ke this is all uncharted territory, how to take office, begin to take office under these circumstances, but those questions are still hanging back at the moment. they are waiting for the final results that will give them enough electoral votes to put them over the top. they will celebrate and get then to work as quickly as possible if it is called in their favour. barbara, as always, thanks
10:37 pm
so much. as barbara was saying, we are expecting something, but it's unlikely to be a victory speech. we are expecting something, so at the moment, when we hearfrom that are expecting something, so at the moment, when we hear from that camp, we will go there. let's take you live to outside the white house of the moment. this is the scene there. it speaks for itself, a few things to mention of interest, the overall turnout at the moment is being projected to be the highest in 120 yea rs. projected to be the highest in 120 years. 66.9%, that the projected turnout. 0f years. 66.9%, that the projected turnout. of course, we don't have until the counting is finished the final turnout, but whatever happens, of course, we are waiting, patience is the key word in this election, but whatever happens, this has galvanised people and people are out voting, 66.9% projected turnout, the highest and 120 years. so, yeah, we watch and wait, bothjoe biden and
10:38 pm
president trump have increased have got big, increased the number of people voting. joe biden around 73 million voters around 11 million more than hillary clinton got last time around, so people galvanised people very much voting. 0f time around, so people galvanised people very much voting. of course, a number of states, we are still waiting on. and one of those is arizona. 0ur west coast correspondent is there. so where are we when it comes to happening what's happening with those 11 electoral couege happening with those 11 electoral college votes in arizona? willjoe biden flip that state? well, this is a very tight race like many of those going on at the moment. accounting is still continuing in the building behind me. at the moment, it's very tight. less than 1.4 percentage points between the two, and it's been narrowing over the last three
10:39 pm
days as counting continues. nowjoe biden is still leading but only by less tha n biden is still leading but only by less than 40,000 votes, and there are still many thousands of votes to be counted. i'm actually outside the vote counting centre where there has been a very large rally here this morning called protect the boat. at its peak, there were between 5—600 people here, very peaceful protest. at times, they knelt in prayer asking god to look over their ballots. as you can see, the cloud 110w ballots. as you can see, the cloud now is very much depleted. the organisers asked people to go home and come back later. they said it's going to be a very long night. in terms of when we find out the final results, the honest answer is we just don't know. people were hoping that it might be today, we had indications from inside that it won't be today, and maybe not tomorrow either. the vote counts continues and officials here are appealing for people to be patient and to be calm. now, a lot of chanting here throughout the course of the day. with the officials are saying is that they are doing exactly that, counting the vote. a
10:40 pm
lot of people have been coming up to us lot of people have been coming up to us and saying that their vote wasn't counted. i'm not sure if you are aware, but people claim that when they were in the polling booth making their votes, they had normal pens taken away from them and given a black sharpie which they feel isn't red by the tabulator is. now, since that has been talked about, we have heard from the secretary of state who is indeed a democrat, but also the attorney—general of arizona, a republican, both of whom have dismissed this and said that every vote here will be counted. very much the sentiment across all the states that are still waiting. every vote is crucial and must be counted. thanks so much. i know we will be back when we have more. so belong there in phoenix, arizona. right, let's have a look at what the papers are doing.
10:41 pm
hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are former conservative adviser mo hussein and susie boniface, columnist from the mirror. megan fink we all know what were going to be talking about. —— i think we all know what we're going to be talking about. biden clears a path to victory reads the front of the new york times — as the former vice president leads the us election race in a number of key states. the ‘i‘ sayjoe biden is "ready for power" and already has "one foot in the door" of the white house. moving online and politico's us website says the republican party are now pushing back against president trump's false election claims — although some have jumped to his defence. the telegraph report on the biden campaigns vow to kick "trespassers" out of the white house — as donald trump clings to power. the philippine star say the "truth shall prevail" and show a picture of president trump during a news conference that many major us networks dropped half way through. says biden holds the edge and has a picture of his supporters celebrating and the daily mail
10:42 pm
leads on what they call the bbc diana scandal — the paper says the princess —— in the guardian, biden is poised to become the 46 president of the united states after a record turnout. the gulf news says that biden holds the edge and has a picture of his supporters celebrating. the male leads on what they call the bbc diana scandal, the paper says that the princess of wales was tricked into an interview with martin bashir. so, some of the front pages that we've got already. let's begin. we will kick off, all of the front pages apart from one dominated by what's going on in the united states. susie, biden ready for power. of course, we... using that kind of wording, they are not calling it, but it's a tricky one, isn't it? when you can't, they are projecting, not calling, but a lot of people are saying that he's almost there. that's due to the vagaries of the american system. it took more than a month for all of the votes to be counted in 2016,
10:43 pm
although the electoral college was clearer a lot sooner. and also, we had because of the pandemic the democrats have been suggesting there voters should vote by mail to protect themselves, trump has said don't worry about that, you must turn up on the day, and in several states, republican state leaders have ensured that the male votes only gets counted after election day as opposed to before, so they have changed the procedures which have created this situation where this blueshift biden's votes are going to get counted later. and what you've got here as well as whether biden is ready to take power the issue is rather trump is willing to give power up. he sitting in the white house, he's arguing about things, he's facing an awful lot of criminal civil litigation when and if he leaves the white house, and the question isn't so much, "is he going to leave liz microscope because there are checks and balances in place that ensure that he does leave
10:44 pm
when he has to, it's not his house, remember. the issue is really why he is trying to hold onto that power. as he trained to all that trip because he's bargaining for leverage to try and get some kind of presidential pardon? for federal charges he made face? that doesn't, you know, negate the fact that he still owes $900 billion to deutsche bank and other things going on. is he holding onto power because he is a man who has never had to lose anything in his entire life, whether it's exams, whether it's anything in his entire life, whether it's exams, whether its money, whether it's a tax deal, whether it's a court case. she's always find a way to bargain, even multi—million pound worth of debt into being some kind of a game for him. so he's in a situation of a two—year—old who's having to realise that the world does not revolve around him, and there are other people in it with equally valid or more valid views and willpower than him, and he is having to deal with that. we are hearing today from other sources that there are those in the white
10:45 pm
house currently protecting and enabling him and not having that difficult conversation of a parent with a two—year—old thing, 0k, right, it's time that you stop this 110w right, it's time that you stop this now because this is not the way the world works. and it's a question of when and if that conversation happens and what exactly it is that trump is trying to get out of this period in which this he's trying to hold power. employed to pretend i didn't hear what you've been calling him, susie. i'm going to gloss over that. just to say, republican senator of south carolina was saying that donald trump deserves a chance to have his case heard. picking up on those points that susie was making, this idea of whether he will concede, the daily telegraph is looking at that, and it picks up on what the joe biden looking at that, and it picks up on what thejoe biden campaign was saying, that they have, that the campaign to kick trespassers, using that word, quite a loaded word, trespassers out of the white house.
