to the rest of the field. but the weekend at augusta really is perfectly poised. we went into this round with the world's three best players all level at the top of the leaderboard — that's never happened before at any major... but dustinjohnson really is on fire right now. he is on m under par. he made a brilliant eagle at the second hole with an iron from 220 yards to just 3 feet — and then he's gone on to make birdies straightaway at the third and fourth and another one at the the 7th. what a brilliant putt that was. he is the man to beat. so who can catch him? well, world number twojohn rahm is one of the favourites. he's a consistent performer at majors. you can see his best finishes here.
7:46 pm
fourth at the masters and the us pga, third at the us open and 11th at the open. but all of those finishes, he was never really in contention to win it — this one, he's been right up there from the start. he was 10 under. but he had a nightmare on the par 5 8th with a double bogey 7. so a bit to do for rahm but there's still a way to go gav. i tell you something, rory mcilroy has made the leaderboard after a bit ofa has made the leaderboard after a bit of a slow start from the first round? of a slow start from the first round 7 absolutely. he looked dead and buried after the first round at augusta. just to remind you, his opening round was his worst ever at the masters, but he had a great second round to bring him to 3 under and he's having a great third round so far.
7:47 pm
five birdies already with a brilliant chip in from a bunker on the 12th hole brought him to 8 under, but he's just gone into the water on 15. but he managed to save par there. he just can't afford many mistakes like that. well, here's a quick look at the latest leaderboard. and there's lots of good scoring out there today. dustinjohnson is the man to beat at the moment. he is on m under par, mexican abraham ancer is level with justin thomas, another american, on 11 under, and we can see the selected others, to make one dropping to eight under level with rory mcilroy, the same as tiger woods just at the bottom there on
7:48 pm
four under par. still lots to be decided, a long way to go in this one. well, you can listen to live coverage of the third round on 5 live sports extra and there are highlights on bbc 2 at 10.40 tonight, gav. i look forward to it. often, thank you very much indeed. it is all set up you very much indeed. it is all set up extremely well there. right, onto the rugby union now. england are top of their autumn nations cup pool, with a comfortable 40—0 win over georgia. they were the heavy favourites at twickenham — and had their hooker to thank, who made history with his try scoring exploits this afternoon. scotland continued their fine form too, coming from behind to beat italy 28—17. ben croucher reports. rugby at twickenham in 2020 looks a bit different. england are playing in blue, for starters. the kits and players may change — the form has stayed constant, with jack willis on debut opening his international account for the six nations champions. it's a competition georgia harbour hopes ofjoining, but three more first—half tries demonstrated the gulf between them. they knew what was coming, too.
7:49 pm
it did not mean they could do anything about it. jamie george had already scored two tries like this when he became the first english hooker to score a hat—trick. the close—range tactic worked for dan robson, too. georgia's first visit to twickenham was a pointless one. there has been a change in the air in scottish sport of late. their male footballers are on a roll. and their rugby counterparts are on the best run this century. it was a tepid start in tuscany, though, as italy found some florence flair to lead at half—time. scotland needed something a bit different to turn in their favour. zander fagerson, a former chorister and mountain biker turned prop forward found his path through the italian try line similarly unique. scotland ecstatic, italy just static. and even when they weren't, there was no stopping scott cummings the try line, a tried and trusted method when george turner bundled over to complete a record—equalling fifth straight win. ben croucher, bbc news.

well, it was a good day for england women's side too — they got the better of france in the first of two matches, winning 33—10 in grenoble. it was another convincing display from the six nations grand slam champions. their injured captain sarah hunter joined me in the studio — and told me they're in great shape, building towards a big year in 2021. the first half was a real battle for france, for us, 10—10 at half—time, really proud of the way the girls came out and exerted themselves onto the french and got two early tries, and from then on it was difficult for france to get back into the game, and we just for france to get back into the game, and wejust kept building and building, and that's what you need when you go away to france. and after such a stunning six nations campaign, where does this leave
7:51 pm
england now looking ahead to the next test and also the world cup next test and also the world cup next year? we have got france at home next week, so i've got no doubt they will be wanting to look at themselves and they will probably come out in a very different way, and probably give us another test back home, they will not want to lose two on the bounce, so that will be important to us and take us into oui’ be important to us and take us into our six nations next year, which is a key tournament for us building towards the world cup at the back end of next year, so probably in a good place, like always, there are things for us to work on within our game, buti things for us to work on within our game, but i think for us, the important thing is that winning mentality, and over the last year we have continued to do that, so we just need to build on that at the same time as building on our performance. formula one now. lance stroll took advantage of the wet and wild conditions on the track in turkey to become the first canadian in 23 years to make pole today. he pipped red bull's max verstappen, but championship leader lewis hamilton is still in prime position to claim a record—equalling 7th world title this weekend. nick parrott has more.
7:52 pm
it was an early indicator of the chaos to come. while the authorities at istanbul park were able to deal with the dog, there was nothing they could do about the weather. the turkish grand prix has never been held later than august. by november, it's an altogether different challenge. conditions were so tricky, the open session of qualifying was suspended for three quarters of an hour. and almost as soon as it got going again, it was held up for anotherfive minutes. everyone appeared to be riding their luck at times, and it was lance stroll‘s numbers that came up. the 22—year—old racing point driver claiming the first poll of his career, just ahead of red bull's max verstappen. ijust nailed pretty much every corner, and pieced it together very nicely, and it is a great way to bounce back after a few rough weeks. it has been a rough ride for me, so it feels good. it's the first time this year a mercedes

hasn't taken the top spot. lewis hamilton usually excels in the wet, but could only manage sixth, and is concerned for the race. i have no idea what car i've got underneath me tomorrow. we made some setups going into today and it has been wet, sol have no idea, if it's dry i have no idea if it will feel, if it is wet than i know it it couldn't feel as bad as it is today. but with team—mate and rival valtteri bottas ninth, hamilton is likely to win a record equalling seventh world title even if he doesn't win the race. nick parrott, bbc news. let's quickly round up some of the day's other stories — and the motogp rider's title could be decided this weekend, withjoan mir only needing a podium finish to be crowned champion. but that will be difficult with the spaniard only able to manage twelfth on the grid in qualifying for the valencia grand prix. title rival fabio ouartararo is right in front of him. franco morbidelli will start from pole. argentina beat new zealand for the first time in their history this morning.
7:54 pm
nikola sanchez became a national hero, scoring the only try and kicking all his side's points in a 25—15 victory — prompting tears ofjoy at the end. a late surge from adam peaty saw him win the men's 50m breaststroke and break his own british record for london roar on day one of the semi—finals of the international swimming league in budapest. london roar are in a good position to make the final ahead of day two. another gold medal to add to the collecion for katie archibald. she has won the womens points race at the 2020 european track championships in bulgaria. lydia hall of wales has a share of the lead at the saudi ladies international. she finished round three on 10 under par alongside denmarks‘ emily kristine pedersen. england's georgia hall is just one shot further back on 9 under. women's super league leaders manchester united came from 2—0

down to draw with rivals manchester city and maintain their unbeaten record. city took the lead early on and then doubled it thanks to this rocket from laura coombs. and there's another cracker of a goal coming here — tobin heath getting one back for united. before substitute kirsty hanson prodded home the easiest finish of the day to complete their comeback. 2—2 the final score. there was another derby this afternoon — aston villa lost to birmingham, in the first ‘second—city‘ derby of the wsl. claudia walker with the only goal there. it's finished 1—1 between everton and reading. everton miss the chance to go 2nd. and the clash between the two bottom sides just kicked off. it is currently 1—1 there. that's all from sportsday. enjoy the rest of your evening.

hello. the wind in the rain which has characterised the start of the weekend isn't finished with us again. there will be some further heavy rain at times and quite strong winds, not a wash—out everywhere, some of us have had a little sunshine occasionally today and will again tomorrow, but very clearly low pressure in charge. around that these weather fronts coming in with spells of rain or indeed just heavy showers. that continues overnight and into the morning, and most of the downpours as the night goes on will be through western parts of scotland, northern ireland, wales and western areas of england, and we could well see some further rain, coming a little bit more widespread into south—east england as we start the day tomorrow. overnight temperatures, very mild for some of

us temperatures, very mild for some of us for the time of year, just dipping down into single figures, but nowhere particularly cold, and a further area of rain sweeping east across england and wales as we start the day tomorrow, staying wetted to parts of northern ireland and south—west scotland as the afternoon goes on, and then another dose of heavy rain pushing into south—west england for a time during the afternoon. that will be accompanied by very strong and gusty winds right along the south coast here, and you could see some gusts around 60 mph, may be nearer 70 in the channel islands. and along southern and western coast, these strong and gusty winds combined with high tides bring a risk of further coastal flooding in places. that area of rain zips across south—east england to end sunday, keeping showers coming in particularly towards northern and western scotland and into north—west england, going into monday morning. will be cooler tomorrow and overnight, and into monday morning. a little ridge of high pressure tries to building on monday, and that will offer something quieterfor
7:58 pm
monday, and that will offer something quieter for many of us, but you see that weather front coming in from the west. so although we will start the day with a few sunny spells, cloud will increase from the west and we will see some more rain heading on towards northern ireland, wales, western parts of england and eventually into western scotland. but we hold onto some hazy bright of the longest on monday across eastern parts of scotland. and then beyond that for a few days, still low pressure around, so few days, still low pressure around, so there will still be further spells of rain or showers, and as that starts to pull away late in the week, the sting in the tale of next week's weather is quite a significant drop in temperatures.
